- golfingeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is a good idea even if you don't consider they're donating a significant amount of their revenues to charity.
- Frungi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Actually, they’re donating to a scholarship. Half the band’s take and all the affiliate earnings, according to the site.
- shaun1018, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6Buried as spam. We already have a bitch and moan advertisement and its still on the ***** front page.
- dp9ny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8plus there's boobies on the album art!
- Simplex42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Awesome. This will really teach big music that they're doing it all wrong, and that in order to sell more music they have to:
- get people involved with buying something by viral marketing.
- promote it with concept tie-ins (promotions, donations to favourite charities, scholarship funds)
- get more marketing that convinces people buying their track it's sticking it to the man
- manipulating charts by getting a whole heap of people to go buy a track just to make it more popular.
If only they'd thought of doing this before. Oh wait... that's standard operating procedure for big music distributors. What's the point of convincing them that what they're already doing is working?
If a story came out that the RIAA had manipulated charts by getting hundreds or thousands of people to buy their CDs or iTMS music, we wouldn't hear the end of how corrupt they are. - masterofNone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3why aren't they donating it all? with the digg effect in action they could see quite a hefty sum from this. it seems the advertising and name recognition would be worth it. if the cause is a good one...
why not donate it all? - roodammy44, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It's not a good idea cos it's buying DRM'ed music.
That's never a good idea.
You don't protest the man by buying stuff in their system, you protest by not buying stuff!
Call me cynical, but this could have been made up by apple to get a whole load of people (who are not into DRM) to register for their crappy store.
- RCt2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's INDEPENDENT day!
- Codeshaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Even better...it's a decent song as well.
- dp9ny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3plus there's boobies on the album art
- WaynePhilips, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Let the games begin! I can't wait to see how this comes out. Great cause and it could make history.
- bobdejfatts, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Were all in. Let the fun begin!

206-309-0242 - VocalVelocity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This great cause, against the mainstream effects of controlled media consumption, will have a rolling stone effect. There will no doubt be a deluge of others, large and small producers, who will attempt similar ideas.
This track is awesome and the band has a great sound. Good luck. - LDPodcast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The use of this "experiment" is to show in a numerical, demonstrative way, that people are listening, consuming and acting in response to new media. We know it, but everyone else needs to know, too.
- teamk1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Coal Cracker Radio is in. it was a good idea to start and really grew into something great. Chris, Mark, and everyone else - well done!
- ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15FIGHTING THE POWER OF MAINSTREAM MEDIA!
(Now with extra DRM!)- Caluen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*giggles*
- sneakerpeet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just got the song :-)
- cnycompguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1dupe
- bendedavis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Dumb idea. I've never heard of this song. I'm all for independent music but even music that I like I won't pay a dollar a piece for DRM'd songs. I'd rather just buy the actual CD and rip it myself.
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Dumb idea. I've never heard of this song."
"I'm all for independent music..."
Umm...thats kind of the point of promoting independent music, isnt it? To get the word out about bands without the radio play and big labels behind them, and I don't know, get people to listen to artists they otherwise wouldn't have heard?
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Dumb idea. I've never heard of this song."
- spudlyo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Burried as a duplicate.
- erzz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11You dumb suckers.
One born every minute...
Buried as spam- hammerpants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You can't damn the man by giving him a dollar. It doesn't work like that.
(On another note, this is a duplicate story and it is spam...but everybody who comments about it gets dugg down. Lame.)
- hammerpants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You can't damn the man by giving him a dollar. It doesn't work like that.
- DaveLaMorte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm just glad the song is pretty good.
- dp9ny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3hope itunes can handle the DIGG EFFECT
- streamfire, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Hell I wouldn't spend the money if they were offering the entire indie collection at one low price. Yea you might be supporting a scholarship but you are also supporting communism, apple and DRM. If you were so crazed about supporting a scholarship, just donate $ directly to the scholarship, duh!
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Communism? Wouldn't that make the music free?
- h00paj00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@zenn: yeah it would be free, but you'd have to wait in a 1/2 mile long line for your music, and then all of the lyrics will be about the worker being great and running the plant or farms... officially sanctioned by the communist party oligarchy that doesn't work of course.
- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5_y9EZcLDY
to summarize : "We don't need big record labels to tell us what is good music to buy, we can do that ourselves. So instead we are going to tell you what to buy. buy this now." - chodabear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Anything that weakens the RIAA is fine with me!
- bking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The song isn't bad, and it's going to a good cause. I'm in.
- arturo227, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What? How does artificially boosting a song's score on the iTunes music store send a message to anybody?
Beelzebub: "Mr. Geffen! Mr. Geffen!"
David Geffen: "Don't interrupt me while I'm eating... It's baby - very tender. Want a leg?"
Beelzebub: "No. You know that band we dropped, Black Lab?"
David Geffen: "Yes. Oh god. I can see it written all over your face. They've hit number one on the iTMS. What fools we were! Beelzebub, from now on, I we'll produce nothing but Indie Rock. Yes, I'm aware of the irony that a giant media conglomerate will be mass producing "Indie" rock, but I don't care! I want to be prepared just in case there's another Bum Rush event!" - cybercooler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I interviewed Paul from Black Lab. Awesome guy, and you'll never beleive the crap that the major labels put these guys through. Listen to the Interview. Check it out at http://coolerpodcasts.com/index.php/podcasts/youwantarecordeal/
- h00paj00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2So, even after all the blow jobs he gave the record execs, they still wouldn't sign him!
I hope he gets enough money from this bum rush for mouthwash.
- h00paj00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2So, even after all the blow jobs he gave the record execs, they still wouldn't sign him!
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Erm.. So what's this about? From what I can make of it, it sounds like you are all being played by a bunch of guys who are out for some free publicity and who will probably sign the biggest fattest deal they can get once they generate enough attention.
Artists who are good generally don't need to be attention whores like this - they let the music do the talking for them. - Nerraux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Best marketing scam ever. I'm proud to have been a sheep. Now, I just need to figure out how to do it for The Awful Show... http://AwfulShow.com
- masterofNone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this looks like a fantastic scam.
- whalefarmerjohn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yeah, unless ALL the procedes are being donated I'm not interested
Buried as spam- h00paj00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At least it's half, and not 2% like the Gap (RED) campaign.
- Accutron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1You dumbass.
- gabopagan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am a sucker for free publicity plays like this. Jefrey Gitomer does this all the time to bump his books on Amazon. Hope it goes well for the guys. Guerrilla marketing at its finest.
- dannyprc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PunkRadioCast will be running a free commercial promoting it. They are one of the worlds largest internet punk rock station.
- mmxtreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a great initiative. I hope this will catch on today, this is a real chance to show "big media" that some of us think differently.
- TechCF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bought this just now with my coke-coins from coca-cola.no :) Great way to get a 'free' iTunes tune
- catranis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody notice the song length?
- md81544, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14:20? Am I missing something?
- mostlynews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's 4.20 mins.
Even if you don't like the song, dont' want the song or don't like Apple or DRM you can donate to student scholarship funds. As a society we don't give near enough.
- dulfun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I just discovered a band i really like. I do think it's a good cause.
1) its an indy band.
2) its the first try. if this succeeds don't you think the riaa will be a little concerned that their media channels have been circumvented?
3) if this works, other indy bands may see it as proof that you can market through the internet without the help of big media.
4) it gives apple more leverage. Who is the only company that can actually effect some change in the industry. How many other companies, if they were in apple's situation, would be calling for the end of drm? did the record shops say not to drm'd cd's? isn't MS kicking back cash to the label for zune players? who else would go out on a limb like that? hate apple if you want, but id rather them at the top than anyone else.
5) it gives indy bands a little more leverage against big media.
6) this isn't the end play, it's one step on the road to bringing down traditional channels.
Every cause starts with just a few steps. There is ALWAYS something wrong with every movement or action. If you wait for the perfect play (free, no drm, from X company) you'll never get critical mass to send a message. Many battles, one war. - mwmw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I support this as a social experiment. Maybe it has a positive effect, maybe not, but I'm glad to play and see what comes of it.
- lauridsd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Is this track available from iTunes without all the typical Apple DRM crap? If not, sorry, but no dice.
- biznickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't about being for or against DRM. I think all people purchasing the song would also like to see DRM removed. This is about spending a measly 99 cents to support a good cause. Get over the philosophical battle with whether or not Apple is good or evil, and help support the cause.
- sonicdeli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's about proving how influential podcasting is becoming; it's not always about the narrower vision of mainstream media. If enough "little" guys band together, anything is possible.
- feistynikki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everybody here rocks! It is so great that something that was once just an idea amongst the podosphere is turning into a national (perhaps international) movement. New Media is here to stay!
- whitesnow158, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0No doubt as a reaction to all the bad press he's been giving record labels, Universal/Interscope has relieved Trent Reznor of his contractual duties.
