Nintendo kills Twilight Hack with Wii Menu Update 3.3
nintendowiifanboy.com — Say goodbye to homebrew (at least for now, until they figure out how to exploit something else).

- olp1ma, on 06/17/2008, -18/+3I wondered when/if this was going to happen...
- WhereAmI, on 06/17/2008, -2/+22Of course it was going to happen. Sony isn't the only one that releases updates that also happen to take out homebrew.
- evo8ftw, on 06/17/2008, -10/+1uh...........Doesn't sony encourage homebrew?
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -0/+11No way, dude! Why would they encourage piracy of their games? Have you not heard of the PSP?
- insertAliasHere, on 06/17/2008, -0/+10Sony fought like crazy against the homebrewers on the PSP firmware. But guess who won in the end.
- evo8ftw, on 06/17/2008, -15/+1Uh whatever. Ever heard of the PS3? Sony encourages home brew on there. You can have home brew with out piracy. 9
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -1/+14No they don't. Installing Linux isn't exactly homebrew.
- evo8ftw, on 06/17/2008, -10/+1apparently none of you morons actually own a ps3 and just talk crap on the interwebs.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -1/+10Actually, I do own a PS3, 2 of them as of right now (because I bought a Gunmetal 40GB one). These are the games I own, plus MGS4 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/mywhitenois ...
You don't have to own a PS3 to know Sony DOES NOT encourage homebrew anyway, dumbass. - insertAliasHere, on 06/17/2008, -1/+10@evo8ftw
Looks like somebody hates being wrong.
Sony allows you to put Linux on the machine. That's not the same as saying: Here, write custom firmware and apps for this system, we don't care. The linux that you install isn't replacing firmware, it's running under a hypervisor, standalone from the system.
Sony isn't a homebrew friendly company. Accept the fact that you're wrong. - SteelFrog, on 06/17/2008, -2/+3Sony allows Linux to be installed to avoid having to pay a UK or Australian (I forget where exactly) tax.
- evo8ftw, on 06/17/2008, -10/+1uh...........Doesn't sony encourage homebrew?
- kravex, on 06/17/2008, -1/+15Wonder no more.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -0/+14It killed Freeloader too.
- WhereAmI, on 06/17/2008, -2/+22Of course it was going to happen. Sony isn't the only one that releases updates that also happen to take out homebrew.
- bonk2k, on 06/17/2008, -3/+133Guess I'm not going to be updating my Wii for a while.
- reekon, on 06/17/2008, -2/+57Won't be long before this update starts appearing on new games to try and force it.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -33/+55Haha! hahahaha!
What games are coming out in the near future that holds any interest? I wont be updating mine for months to come.- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -15/+317 people have dugg me down so far, can you 7 people list me some games that are coming out?
- elrac, on 06/17/2008, -5/+25I'll digg you up. The last game I bought was Mario Galaxy, and I haven't seen any others that look interesting.
- legom7, on 06/17/2008, -7/+20starwars: the force unleashed.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -24/+6"starwars: the force unleashed"
I'd rather get that on PS3. - mickhead, on 06/17/2008, -5/+25Super Smash Bros Brawl (for those in the UK)
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. (Not the wiiware one)
Samba De Amigo
Rock Band
DeBlob
Fatal Frame 4 (Project Zero 4) - ngmcs8203, on 06/17/2008, -4/+13Mario Galaxy was the last game you bought for Wii? What about Wii Kart?
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -19/+1Rock Band for Wii? Why would anyone buy that? Get it on 360 or PS3.
The only game that looks remotely fun in that list is Samba De Amigo, I already have Smash Bros. - theaceoffire, on 06/17/2008, -3/+16"starwars: the force unleashed."
It is a different game for each console, with different control systems.
The WII lets you use the wand as a lightsaber! - Zephkiel, on 06/17/2008, -4/+23Fatal Frame 4
de Blob
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers
Animal Crossing Wii
Kirby Wii
Blastworks (Technically it's already out, but I doubt anyone here has bought it)
The Conduit
Deadly Creatures
Disaster: Day of Crisis (it'll come out eventually... I hope)
Fragile
Harvest Moon Wii
Mario Super Sluggers
Sam & Max: Season One
Swords of Legendia
Wii Music (come on, the game looks fun)
Some of these games may be hit and miss, but at least three or four ought to interest you. They're all exclusives, I think. - mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -14/+4How many of those games even have release dates? Some of those aren't even confirmed.
- funk13, on 06/17/2008, -11/+2get a life
- trdrstv, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3MadWorld. & "Strong Bad 's cool game for attractive people" come immediately to mind.
- Froderick, on 06/17/2008, -4/+1Which is where things like pirated ISO's and BrickBlockers come in (apps that wipe the section of the ISO which contains the firmware update data).
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -33/+55Haha! hahahaha!
- smoger, on 06/17/2008, -4/+5my question to you... why are you even still using the Twilight Hack?
- solidus636, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3The real question is: Why not?!
- bonk2k, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4I'm not really, now that I have the homebrew channel. I'm just reluctant to seal off use of it until there's a workaround. Luckily Wiibrew.org is reporting that someone has made one and I'm just waiting to see how that turns out.
- reekon, on 06/17/2008, -2/+57Won't be long before this update starts appearing on new games to try and force it.
- bitchpleaz, on 06/17/2008, -34/+2dugg!
- DreKor, on 06/17/2008, -18/+3failed!
- bonk2k, on 06/17/2008, -1/+50Other people are saying that if you already have the homebrew channel installed this update won't affect it. So all hope is not yet lost.
- WhereAmI, on 06/17/2008, -3/+8Someone here want to try?
- SNKNGSHPS, on 06/17/2008, -0/+26I can confirm my homebrew channel still works.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/17/2008, -7/+6I've been installing VC games through Twilight Princess, I didn't even know there was a "Homebrew Channel" could you provide a link?

There is an update on the page.
http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/06/16/wii-me ... - homesickalien, on 06/17/2008, -3/+17Bushing is currently looking at the disassembled code with commentary available on his blog here:
http://hackmii.com/2008/06/june-16-wii-update/
Looks like trucha signed disks also no longer work.- DaveMode, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6I have way too many custom guitar hero 3 discs that would all be unplayable with this update.... so I guess I'll hold off.
- Zavius, on 06/17/2008, -4/+1I thought you could only play custom Guitar Hero 3 discs with a Chip. This doesn't seem to effect modchips
- homesickalien, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2It does affect modchips as modded systems are the only kind of systems that CAN play trucha signed discs like: Manhunt 2 with blood patch, custom guitar hero 3 songs, SSBB, Mario Kart Wii etc.
Anyhow, Bushing has now found a new workaround for the Twilight Hack patch, but not for Trucha signing...yet. - Zavius, on 06/17/2008, -3/+1A fine point..... digg me down

- AnonSpangly, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2The homebrew channel is really easy to install, provided you have Twilight Princess and an SD card.
I did it last night, specifically because Nintendo doesn't want me to. ScummVM on Wii, here we come. - MonsterChaOS, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5I wouldn't update even after you have it installed. You'll still lose the ability to run Trucha signed disks, and there are some good ones!
- Juntistik, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I have 2.2U firmware and I just tried to install the homebrew channel and I need a higher update appearently... and now I cannot update it. I don't have any recent games either.. :(

- Quick2822, on 06/17/2008, -1/+20I'm surprised it took this long.
- jordan314, on 06/17/2008, -1/+13I'm surprised they're focusing on homebrew and not on modchips. The wiikey continues to run strong. Homebrew encourages people to learn how to develop for their system, but to make real dough you still need to apply for a Nintendo license to get distribution. Homebrew encourages people to spend more time with the Wii and love them even more.
Modchips on the other hand require no development on the users' part and are strictly for ripping off Nintendo and its developers. So why does Nintendo only attack Homebrew?- duckyinc, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2because mod chips take longer to put to death
- WaRdRivR, on 06/17/2008, -0/+7yeah, mod chips require Nintendo to have the entire motherboard physically redesigned at the manufacturing level. It takes more time, effort, and money. Also VC titles have sold very well to date. Emulators will cut into their profit margins.
- jordan314, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Super Mario Galaxy had a modchip detection function that shipped with the game. The wiikey was able to update its own firmware to cloak itself from it though. Still, software checks are possible and I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't integrated this straight into their OS.

- ChokingVictims, on 06/17/2008, -0/+68From wiibrew.org:
17 June 08: Bushing has already announced a workaround after just 6-8 hours of work! Big thanks to all involved! (Note that the workaround is not yet available publicly) - johnhummel, on 06/17/2008, -8/+2What's interesting is that there is a "Homebrew Channel" out there, that you can install with the Twilight Princess hack - then you don't need it any more.
I'll be curious to see if this update also disables the Homebrew Channel, or just the Twilight Princess hack.- ChokingVictims, on 06/17/2008, -0/+14It doesn't disable the channel, only the hack.
- Froderick, on 06/17/2008, -1/+0The Twilight Hack is immensely popular since by itself it can't brick the Wii. It is so much more popular than the Homebrew Channel, that I guess Nintendo decided to tackle that first.
- smoger, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1that and the fact that the TH is the can opener for everything. No TH, no Homebrew Channel. Now they have a relatively small % of Wii owners who got in under the bay door. Everyone else is locked out(for now)

- tavisjohn, on 06/17/2008, -0/+11That will teach you to install updates the MOMENT they come out!
I tend to wait a week before installing an update. - Froderick, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6When it comes to a console/handheld that has firmware updates, you always, ALWAYS wait a while after an update has come out, so any issues that arise from upgrading to it will be announced so you can then make a judgment call.
- saisumimen, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5I'll go even further and say that any update to ANY device (ipod, handheld game console, future iphone, portable media player, etc.) should not be installed immediately.
Case in point: I bought an Archos 605 wifi media player. Out of the box, I installed the update like it recommended I should. I find out later that I can no longer install Linux on it and I can't roll back to the old version. ARRGHH!@!!

- sdphost, on 06/17/2008, -1/+17A work around has already been announced, sorry Nintendo.
- estvir, on 06/17/2008, -0/+13It also seems to stop Freeloader from working which sucks for many, especially Europeans and Australians who seem to constantly get shafted by Nintendo.
How's Smash Bros, fun? Well, we wouldn't know 'cause it hasn't been released.. but Freeloader used to work.- AdmiralJimbob, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Yep, I'm in the UK and own a Freeloader and Smash Bros. I doubt I'll be forced to update until a while after the game is released in the UK, but I'm certainly not looking forward to having to start collecting characters, trophies, stickers etc from scratch.
- Avanost, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1If you already have the Homebrew Channel and the Wad installer, you can try out Smash Bros for yourself right here in North America
- harajukukei, on 06/17/2008, -3/+2no, not fun... wii can't handle dual layer discs and that game almost did permanent damage to my wii.
- Froderick, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8That's were modchips come in. Download the ISO, use RegionFrii and BrickBlocker, and hopefully you'll be right. I don't like piracy of video games that much, but when they seem to decidedly screw us over (we get charged close to $100 for new games in Australia, even though our dollar is nearly the same as the US dollar), then I'm not too apologetic when it comes to pirating.
How long has SSBB been out in the US? And it still isn't out here yet? No good reason for that. They intentionally put region coding in the system so places can't get games from other countries for cheaper. They do it to inflate PAL prices to extremes and screw us over. Because of this attitude, I have little sympathy for them anymore.- bonk2k, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8The homebrew channel comes with a software bundle that includes a region free loader. No hard mods required. Just pop in your imported disc, load up the homebrew channel, and load up the app and then you're ready to go.
- reed311, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6That post is a candidate for the world's smallest violin.
- Treoinmypocket, on 06/17/2008, -15/+6I thought this was about homebrew BEER no longer being allowed.
PHEW! - DaveMode, on 06/17/2008, -3/+16And here is the 1 step workaround:
1) Don't update your Wii.
Even if new games come out with 3.3 firmware installed, you can always just use BrickBlocker or Trucha to kill the update and play as normal.- potat4o, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6I believe that you can't use Trucha signed games with this update.
- TheTjalian, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5Trucha and BrickBlocker are only available to people who have modchips.
- Psykus2, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1There's a homebrew application that works similar to the Freeloader that will block any updates on a launched game. So even if you don't have any import titles, you could potentially use this app to continue playing games that have the forced 3.3 update and still have access to homebrew.
- rhololkeolke, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I installed the homebrew channel yesterday. I guess I did it just in the nick of time.
- linuxares, on 06/17/2008, -0/+6They found a fix for it already!
Not release yet, they are testing it. - erichw1504, on 06/17/2008, -0/+16Still waiting for a full out Mii Channel upgrade. There's so much more they can add to change your Mii's appearance with.
Like, a shade bar for the color of your Mii's skin (i'd like to be just a little tanner during the summer season) and more mouths and noses... especially noses! Also you should be able to enter in your exact weight and height so it can look exactly like you compared to the others around you.
Come on Nintendo!- TheTjalian, on 06/17/2008, -0/+7All of the Mii data is stored in MASK ROM, which is a one-time-write memory chip. Updating it wouldn't go down so well, a) because it means it would need to go on the internal memory, and b) if someone with a "Mii 2.0" tries to use it with someone who hasn't updated their firmware that could lead to a pretty bad crash.
- heathuff23, on 06/18/2008, -4/+2If you are that concerned with how your mii looks, you need to look in the mirror and probably reassess life...I mean seriously.
- SNKNGSHPS, on 06/17/2008, -1/+5I can confirm the homebrew channel works. If you check www.hackmii.com (the creator of the twilight hack and homebrew channel) they have already found a couple of pieces in nintendo's code to get around their Twilight Hack block. Should be a matter of days before a new twilight hack is released.
- missingnoh4x, on 06/17/2008, -1/+8Gah. Why does Nintendo have to kill homebrew, region lock consoles, etc? None of those things hurt their business and in fact can only help.
- DigitalHippie73, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8Well, if you consider (hypothetically only) hat one could play the older console games on their Wii without having to buy them with points, then in a way it will hurt their business. That being said, I still think the whole homebrew thing is very cool and I'm sure they will find a workaround.
- Quenlin, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1Phht, those older games were just downloaded from the web and authorized for download. They've made their profit, in fact VC is practically all profit for them.
- smoger, on 06/17/2008, -2/+8because people are pirating VC and WiiWare games with it. if people could "behave" and stop using homebrew as another word for piracy, Nintendo might have ignored this.
- reyoo30309, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1homebrew still just adds up to competition. The reason why Nintendo first started to give the seal of approval to Nintendo games was not to stamp out piracy but it was to end homebrew. And for the most part they succeeded.
- DigitalHippie73, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8Well, if you consider (hypothetically only) hat one could play the older console games on their Wii without having to buy them with points, then in a way it will hurt their business. - fakunderground, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Well now I'm sad. At least I don't have to update my wii for a while.
- nard3456, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1dammit I just updated mine
- harajukukei, on 06/17/2008, -4/+7long live the wiikey.
- MonsterChaOS, on 06/17/2008, -6/+1completly unrelated.....
- CalcProgrammer1, on 06/17/2008, -9/+4No way on Earth am I installing that horrible update then! I own my Wii, it's my property, and if I want to run my own code on it, I own it and I have every right to! I know I can't run copies of copyrighted software (emulators) legally, but I can run media players and Linux and whatever other open-source software has been ported to the Wii. I'm not going to update until the current Twilight Hack is obsolete and a new workaround compatible with the new (and future) updates is available. Also, considering I'm not planning on buying any new games for a while...good luck trying to force this nonsense on me, Nintendo! I have always supported Nintendo, but this kind of ignorant action really makes me mad at a company that is supposed to be supporting their customers!
- seandfeeney, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Update: According to commenters, the update doesn't kill the Homebrew Channel (if it was already installed), so there's still something for you all to have fun with.
Update 2: Looks like Freeloader is affected by this new update, as well. Sad face. - Froderick, on 06/17/2008, -0/+7No big surprise they try to stop FreeLoader from working. The only reason region-coding is done in consoles is so prices can be driven up in other regions and the consumer can't do anything about it. In Australia, a new game costs close to $100. Our dollar is almost identical to the US dollar nowadays. Australian residents are paying more than twice as much as US residents simply because Nintendo wants to force more money out of us.
Nintendo isn't alone in doing this. But when they intentionally make freeloaders not work for this reason alone, it pisses me off immensely. - crpndeth, on 06/17/2008, -2/+6Does anyone know if this update affects modded wiis? (like ones with the WiiKey)
- incognit0, on 06/17/2008, -1/+7It doesn't.
- crpndeth, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3thanks!
- fudged71, on 06/17/2008, -13/+1I'm glad that they fixed it. I don't see why people would want homebrew on the DS and Wii. I find that most of the fun behind getting homebrew on a device is just watching a serious company get pissed off. I just loved watching Sony squirm with each homebrew hack around their firmware. Nintendo is a pretty cool guy, I would never hack a nintendo device, because I respect them
anybody else feel this way?- Chebsi, on 06/17/2008, -2/+9Nintendo is a serious business. Seriously.
- TitoBob, on 06/17/2008, -2/+6In cyberspace, respect is earned by sharing, not forced upon by prohibiting.
Nah, this update just turned Nintendo from "a pretty cool guy" into "The Man".- fudged71, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3ok, but what about the game developers? don't you think they are putting a bit of pressure so that these cracks in the firmware get fixed? last thing nintendo would want is to have game developers running away because people are putting homebrew on the device
- Psythik, on 06/17/2008, -13/+2If they keep this up, I'll never buy a Wii.
***** Nintendo.- waluigi14, on 06/17/2008, -1/+9They weren't blocking homebrew, they were blocking PIRACY. So you're saying that you won't buy a Wii if Nintendo protectes it's developers from losing money?
- potat4o, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1Just make sure you have Homebrew Channel, you don't need Twilight Princess once you have that installed.
- Nathan187, on 06/17/2008, -5/+0what's the big deal about this homebrew thing anyway?
- bestperson, on 06/17/2008, -2/+0Can you install PAL Wads on an NTSC system?
- Shadic, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1No.
- FecalHurler, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Ahh... Well, I was going to do it in a few weeks. Guess I'm gonna have to change my plans.
Apparently they've found a way to get the TP hack working again... But I have a few questions for those that have it installed:
1) Can I DL the VirtualConsole games and play them through the hack?
2) Does the hack allow you to DL the user-made software? - jasongbc, on 06/17/2008, -6/+2Wii is gaa. I miss Sega.
- jman583, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6your gaa.
- jasongbc, on 06/17/2008, -4/+0HAHAHA, thanks buddy. I love it when people comeback with "your" instead of "you're". You're either +1 funny or -1 idiot, I'm not sure which.
- pigducksheep, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1nice try
- pigducksheep, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2GAA!!!!!
- Quenlin, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Gaa, that's my new word.
- ittechguy, on 06/17/2008, -3/+1I don't recommend installing the homebrew channel at all! It WILL void your warranty! The Nintendo Channel will gather information stored in logs and send them back Nintendo. I just don't think it's the best idea...
- saisumimen, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1-_-
- BionicPimp, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5this isn't an xbox. every nintendo console i own, including the original nes, still works. What do you need a warranty for? Nintendo is the toyota of console manufacturers. (microsoft is the either the Ford or the Fiat :-P)
- disp, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Suprisingly, Ford just beat Toyota in quality ratings.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19073071/ - ittechguy, on 06/18/2008, -0/+0Still nice to have!!! I don't give a crap if they still work, it's just a safety net. I have virtually every nintendo console ever made and only have had problems once, with my N64. I'm not doing it, and I was just telling those considering it that it isn't really the best idea, especially if you don't know what you are doing!
- disp, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Suprisingly, Ford just beat Toyota in quality ratings.
- TheKeithD, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Care for a tinfoil hat? Oh wait, you're already wearing one.
- MeltingIce, on 06/17/2008, -0/+17The difference between Sony and Nintendo: Sony calls them "security improvements" and Nintento calls it "removal of unauthorized modifications". At least they're being honest about whats really happening in the update.
- justice7, on 06/17/2008, -3/+2Question; is it possible yet with the homebrew channel; to run backups? (aka softmod) Thanks!
- IronPwnage, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Doesn't really kill it seeing as the updates are optional
- conversekid, on 06/17/2008, -2/+1Hurr, not updating now.
Funny, I was going to rent Twilight tonight for the sole purpose of bootlegging ***** through the hack. - yifanlu94, on 06/17/2008, -5/+1I say we strike back! ISO loader maybe? *crosses fingers*
- CaptianOlimar, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1That really sucks. I'm not making them lose money. I'm willing to buy any VC games released that I have ROMs for. I'm glad that we still have the channel, but now their limiting installers who will install this without thinking to read it. I know that the guys at WiiBrew have other exploits with other popular games (including Super Mario Galaxy, and I'll guess Metroid Prime), that they've been keeping back until Nintendo got rid of the Twilight Hack. We'll probably see one released very soon, and Nintendo won't release something to kill the hack so quickly.
- kravex, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1With any luck this is a lock down on hacking the Wii before they release a HD or unlock the SD slot, fingers crossed.
- stevedion, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1When will they have an update that permits you to use an SD card to save games from WiiWare and VC. 512MB doesn't cut it and copy pasting games back and fourth from the SD card to the onboard memory is long and a waste of time.
- ImPr3zA, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1The team is currently working on a patch.
- gamingbloghost, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1You can still use this guide ( http://copywiigamesguide.blogspot.com ) and a modchip to copy and play Wii games pretty easily!
