When I went to school, on the way there was this procession for a festival, and because they didn't have a chariot to pull, this guy had hooks pierced in his back with the chains from them linked to an SUV. Among the other people in the procession that day were a bunch of people each with an intricate wooden tower above their heads. The Tower was held up by sticks across their backs and, get this, through their cheeks. On the top of the tower was a little child.

    It was bizarre. I've lived in India all my life, but it was still ***** bizarre.

    Apparently, endorphins released during this allow them to actually enjoy themselves if they selectively shut out the pain. I saw that on the Discovery Channel. Fascinating.
