Oregon Man's Property Ransacked after Craigslist Hoax
kgw.com — A hoax ad placed on Craigslist offered an Oregon man's belongings to anyone willing to come pick them up. The only problem was, the owner didn't place the ad. The hoax led to people carting away nearly everything accessible from his property ... stopping just short of taking his horse.

- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 03/25/2008, -5/+142What a bunch of idiots. No word on whether or not craigslist will cooperate on finding who posted the ad in the first place of course.
- TimDigg, on 03/25/2008, -20/+4I love Craigslist, the original communist tech company
- TimDigg, on 03/25/2008, -9/+3http://www.craigslist.org/about/jim.buckmaster.htm ...
don't belive me...look it up- PeppermintPig, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1Interesting that an 'anarchist' would support net neutrality. But when you add the word communist to the mix, it starts to make more sense.. still, quite a contradiction of beliefs.
- Nichiren, on 03/25/2008, -2/+2Anyone denounced by Jimmy Falwell on Fox News is all right by me :-)
- TimDigg, on 03/25/2008, -9/+3http://www.craigslist.org/about/jim.buckmaster.htm ...
- chaoswings, on 03/25/2008, -2/+40Stupidity had nothing to do with it. I mean come on, most of them knew it was fake they were just looking for an excuse to take his stuff. If they really were honest they would have called the owner to verify the ad.
It's win-win for them. If they got caught they have a good alibi and can just return the items. But if they get away with it too bad for the owner.- JointVenture, on 03/25/2008, -0/+16Isnt that why most people riot, for the loot.
- esteskid, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6that, and the chance to say you've rioted
- DiggerUpper, on 03/25/2008, -2/+1Craiglist can track down the email, because you DO need an email to post.
- Parahnoia, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4yea but how easy is it to go to yahoo and make one...
- JointVenture, on 03/25/2008, -0/+16Isnt that why most people riot, for the loot.
- vertinox, on 03/25/2008, -2/+22My question is how they got in. Did the ad say "Nevermind the fact the door is bolted... Just kick the door in! Its all yours!"
Secondly... This would be one hellava way to get some insurance money. Go to an internet cafe and post on Craig's list and then claim that certain items were taken even though you had those hidden at your friends house.- atarijedi, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2I dont think they got into the house, just the front porch and everything outside of the house
- breez, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3Well, he had a barn and Jacksonville, OR is the kind of place where people don't lock barns. The last line of the article that the AP didn't include:
"I haven't even looked in my barn yet to see what's gone," he said. "As a contractor some of what they took was my livelihood."- pauleric, on 03/25/2008, -2/+4I was thinking they're lucky the homeowner didn't have security provided by Smith & Wesson. But I guess that's less likely in OR than the midwest.
- breez, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5Oh, it's plenty likely in southern Oregon. However, the guy wasn't home at the time.
- FutureGuy, on 03/25/2008, -8/+6Wow this just goes to show how materialistic people have become, no dignity left.
- yojiffyskippy, on 03/25/2008, -2/+31Right. Theft and greed are recent developments in human history.
- PeppermintPig, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2People can do good or bad with their possessions. If the people who took these things have no dignity, I don't think the materials they took are the cause of their attitude.
- Axemantitan, on 03/25/2008, -0/+7FTA: "Detectives have contacted Craigslist's legal team to try to trace the ad."
- tcsucks, on 03/25/2008, -6/+1Hoaxes are illegal? Can the poster be busted for fraud?
The people that fell for the hoax and committed crimes are the ones soley responsible for what happened.- NichowA, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6This is maybe the most retarded thing I've ever heard.
- sexybobo, on 03/25/2008, -2/+1The people did not know they were breaking any laws. I have seen several legitimate ads like this where the family of a decease person takes all they want from the house then says if any one wants anything they can have it. A lot of people use it so they have one less thing to do while they are grieving. They usually have family members though to make sure people don't destroy the house or start stealing plumbing.
- Akaji, on 03/25/2008, -5/+2So the next time I'm pulled over for speeding, but I didn't know I was speeding, I can just tell the officer that I didn't know that I was breaking the law?
Breaking the law is breaking the law, whether you know of the law or not.- skankyBacon, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2There's a difference. It's more like seeing a sign that looks legitimate that says the speed limit is 65 when it's really 55. It's not just not knowing that you're breaking the law, it's the fact that someone fraudulently misled you and others to believe you were not.
- Akaji, on 03/25/2008, -5/+2So the next time I'm pulled over for speeding, but I didn't know I was speeding, I can just tell the officer that I didn't know that I was breaking the law?
- PoonGnarfler, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1Thats like asking if asking someone to murder another person is illegal. They're not technically killing anyone, so its totally ok, right? It's illegal to cause people to do this using fraud, you're a ***** idiot.
- headphonz, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2"Hoaxes are illegal?" Are you kidding me? I notice you're from Oregon...by chance could you be the infamous craigslist poster and that's why you're asking?
Try yelling bomb on a plane....
- Grahamcracker, on 03/25/2008, -0/+9Craigslist always fully complies with the police, it's on their FAQ page.
- headphonz, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Yeah, this happened before in Washington...took everything including the kitchen sink.
- jserio, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Link or it didn't happen.
- headphonz, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Yeah, this happened before in Washington...took everything including the kitchen sink.
- microchp, on 03/25/2008, -0/+8Could be worse. Imagine if someone posted a break-in/rape/rough sex fantasy and posted the address of someone they didn't like. I believe that actually happened once.
- timlopez, on 03/25/2008, -0/+16I love the survey on the page:
"Should the people who took a Jacksonville man's belongings should be prosecuted?"
Idiots work for the news also. - jetblackz4, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1They all knew it was fake why else would they bring a printout of the ad.
To cover their ass when someone questioned why they are robbing a house they have no business being at.- skankyBacon, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1That doesn't mean they knew it was fake. I'd bring a printout if I decided to take advantage of an offer like this that I believed to be legit, for the exact reason you gave. The person's neighbors might not realize that the offer had been placed; I'd want a way to explain the situation to avoid trouble.
- fEaRlEsSmOrOn, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Stupidity and ignorance are not excuses for taking a person's belongings after the owner already explained that he did not authorize the fake advertisement on Craiglist. These robbers, not ignorant or stupid people, did this because they just want free stuff. If it was me, I would have shot someone in the leg or arm, just to show how serious I am about this. I wish the owner would have done such repellent already to confirm the seriousness of this matter.
These robbers should be fined and jailed because I am so damn sure that one of them is the one who posted the damn ad. I am sympathized for the lost of personal belongings that occurred to the poor owner in this case and I am sure that he will get his stuff back, if not all of it.
- TimDigg, on 03/25/2008, -20/+4I love Craigslist, the original communist tech company
- IVillageIdiot, on 03/25/2008, -11/+120I hope the kids that did this, have ALL their stuff confiscated and sold and then as much of their parents stuff sold as is required to pay the victim back.
The opportunistic idiots that comprise a significant portion of our society do the same exact thing when a riot or a hurricane strikes a city down. They use it as an excuse to pillage. They should thank their lucky stars the man whose home they raided and sacked was NOT armed. He would have been well within his rights, whether or not the "authorities" think so, to have put one or two of these flaming imbeciles down for dirt naps.
There is a story, often told, that upon exiting the Constitutional Convention Benjamin Franklin was approached by a group of citizens asking what sort of government the delegates had created. His answer was: "A republic, if you can keep it."- scarecrow1984, on 03/25/2008, -2/+31I agree with you there but where the hell does it say kids??? Don't make assumptions might have been the disgruntled neighbor...
- jggr, on 03/25/2008, -5/+11True... But anyone who would do this is a bit of a juvenile. So, I think the point stands.
- pakakapa, on 03/25/2008, -12/+1He was lucky to NOT have a gun since that would have been looted with everything else and possibly used against himself.
- DangerMouse9, on 03/25/2008, -2/+7Where did it say "Please loot my ***** and shoot me"?
- leopardflames, on 03/25/2008, -4/+3if they were kids i don't think it's right to punish the parents. not all bad kids have careless parents. i think the people who pulled this hoax should be responsible for doing hard labor (like cleaning up horse *****) for a good while until it is paid off.
- yojiffyskippy, on 03/25/2008, -3/+3A "significant portion of our society" does not behave this way and I'll sleep well tonight knowing that a prank on Craigslist does not threaten the "Republic".
- IVillageIdiot, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1"Significant" doesn't mean a majority, it means :
1: having meaning; especially : suggestive
2 a: having or likely to have influence or effect : important ; also : of a noticeably or measurably large amount b: probably caused by something other than mere chance
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/signific ...
And I'm sure you WILL sleep just fine, it wasn't your house that was looted and sacked as a "prank". You have a place to sleep, and something to sleep in, and no worries when you wake to peruse Craigslist for more stuff,... but he won't and if we allow this kind of crap to be seen as if it's just a "prank" and should therefore be treated as such, how long will it be before Craigslist, in all it's dubious glories, is used as a medium for coordinating annual/month/weekly/daily raids on targets of reprisal, opportunity, and to satiate the random lark of joy and excitement?
Nearly every time Law and Order are taken down, a significant number of opportunist arise for the possibility for looting anew. How many times has LA been burnt, looted, and sacked? How many times for Detroit, New Orleans, and other major cities in the 20th Century alone? We don’t need invading armies to do that anymore, we need merely wait for the lights to go out and the Police to back away and it will happen again and again and again.
Perhaps, you live in the country?
I am only aware of one large scale occasion where a city was spared this mindless blight. NYC shortly after 911 when a grid outage occurred, and to their tremendous credit did they simply walk home disallowing any further malfeasance to their city. One supposes they had suffered enough misery and would brook no more. If only they could choose to live in that way forever...
A Republic stands or falls on the validity of it’s laws, and the nature of it’s people in carrying them out faithfully. Where that law and it’s people are merely “acting” concordantly in fear of the other, and that fear is subsequently removed allowing either to show themselves to be otherwise disdainful, then I say YES…. the Republic is in some danger.
- IVillageIdiot, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1"Significant" doesn't mean a majority, it means :
- BossKey, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3It's so easy for you to blame "the kids," but the last time this happened, it was a disgruntled adult family member who placed the ad.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/09/magazine/09_12_c ... - notthatnoise, on 03/25/2008, -3/+0maybe these people thought the add was real, and some guy was really giving away his stuff, maybe they didn't know it was a hoax, but to think about that at all would mean you would lose the opportunity for your rant.
ps. I bet those damn kids won't stay off your lawn will they? - heathuff23, on 03/25/2008, -1/+2Its obvious you commented without reading the article.
"They should thank their lucky stars the man whose home they raided and sacked was NOT armed."
He wasn't even home at the time.- IVillageIdiot, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1No, HeatHuff, I did read it, you on the other hand apparently did not read it carefully enough. He came home DURING the raid and caught several looters in the act of carrying HIS stuff out HIS doors! In Oregon concealed carry is legal. In some parts of Oregon, if a guy comes home and 10 or 20 of his fellow "citizens" are hauling HIS stuff out of HIS doors to their waiting cars, and you happen to be carrying that day, YOU... may be in for a very rude awakening with regard to the validity of those things you've read on the Internet.
Were I the DA of a County in which this had occurred, and this citizen had of availed himself of the right to defend his property by disabling vehicles and holding people at gunpoint until authority arrived, I would find it very difficult to hold him at fault for anything that may have subsequently transpired.
- IVillageIdiot, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1No, HeatHuff, I did read it, you on the other hand apparently did not read it carefully enough. - TheAcclaimed, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Yeah!
- makeitloud, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2That's all true, but it's kind of heavy-handed for a story about a herd of morons raiding somebody's property because they saw an ad, isn't it?
- IVillageIdiot, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Did HE know they were just morons? Or, did HE just see his lifetime's work, thousands of hours spent earning a living doing someone else's bidding for a few bucks which he'll NEVER be able to recoup, walking out the door? Why would we place our sympathy and toleration in defense of the morons when an innocent is standing there watching the derivative, perhaps even the entire derivative, of his life’s work being hauled out the door?
I fail to see the Justice in holding harmless the actions of those who saw a story, thought to themselves “lets get there fast before everyone else does”, BREAK IN (I don’t think they had keys did they), and then in competition with the other looters systematically search and gather the choicest contents of a home that had to look as if it was lived in???
Would you tolerate a government entity (say the IRS for example) breaking down the doors of your house, entering into it, boxing and removing all YOUR stuff, stomping the valueless pictures of YOUR family and friends into the dirt, loading up the trucks with anything that will sell on E-bay or Craig’s and speeding away leaving the door to swing in the breeze?
Would it matter if they, at some later juncture, produced a paper with the neighbor’s address on it and apologized AFTER everything was sold?
I didn’t say he SHOULD have shot them, I said that he was well within his rights to do so if required and that unfortunately the “authorities” in all too many instances appear to prefer less paperwork over the rights of the individual to protect themselves and their property rights.
We, for reasons that seem all to clear to me, the Boomer’s predominate philosophy being chief among them, have systematically devalued OTHER people’s property and have made it appear that the product of one’s life is really valueless in comparison. IE “you can buy a new TV, why defend the one you have with force? Let’s just teach the world to sing and get along and don’t worry about the THINGS you have, they hold no real value”
Gee, I don’t know… Maybe I should defend my TV because:
1. It’s mine and not yours, and that should be good enough.
2. You have NO IDEA what it cost me so you have no idea what it's actually worth to me, what I had to do for it.
3. It may have been my father’s TV and subsequently it may have also been HIS father’s TV and so though it may appear as a simple antiquated B/W TV to you, it may be much, much, more to me. How do YOU place a value on the TV with which my Father and my Grandfather watched an entire world transpire, and then carefully saved it, and repaired it, and maintained it so that their child and their grandchild could view the world as they had done?
4. The hours I spent earning a living may be trivial to YOU, but they are ALL I HAVE in this world and I only have so many of them before they are ALL gone, forever. In effect, if you take from me those things I have bought with the medium (IE money) I traded for them with my labor (IE time on Earth), then by taking my property, you take from me that time (IE a portion of my life) I used to earn it, and impose upon me a further loss of my time in order to recover the use of an item I originally purchased. In effect, you ARE stealing a piece of MY life, why shouldn’t I defend it?
5. If life is so precious, and it is, THEN why is MINE and it’s derivative treated with such disdain, and the thugs and the morons with such care?
In short, I reject the notion that we should sympathize with the looters because they made a mistake. ALL LOOTERS… are making a mistake, and each of them have their “reasons”, I don’t think that should subdue the rights of the victim to defend their property to the extent they have to do what is required in order to effect that defense, and furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, that their rights be respected and acknowledged in full by those we appoint to defend them and all others generally.
We ought naught to give up on what is right because it is difficult or because it may be superficially ugly, we ought to do whatever is required to see that what is right is clearly understood by the vast majority and constantly chosen by all.
- eddielxix, on 03/25/2008, -2/+260Imagine waving a printed Craigslist ad in someones face like it was a court order and claiming the right to keep all the stuff you had looted. Codswallop!
The people creating the ad is bad enough, but the human hyenas that scurry out to pick someones life apart is mind-boggling. I can see being fooled by the ad, but once confronted by the owner and told there was a hoax, you would think they would unload, apologize and crawl home with a shred of decency.
Scum.- Darkhacker, on 03/25/2008, -4/+41I actually laughed my ass of at that part. I can just imagine some idiot with a printed off Craigslist ad acting like it was an official legal document and taking someones *****. It sounds like something out of The Onion. Reminds me of that phone interview with Joe Grone's mother where the guy said "The internet doesn't lie."
- expo1001, on 03/25/2008, -0/+23If I was the man who's home was being burglarized, I would have grabbed the nearest blunt object and starting walloping me some idiots!
- norman619, on 03/25/2008, -2/+15I'd get my knife out and start slashing some tires. None of those idiots would be leaving.
- DangerMouse9, on 03/25/2008, -10/+4Yeah, because that'll solve the problem. *rolls eyes*
- cr0ss, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6It's not going to solve problems but it sure as hell gets the message across that they're ***** up.
- tocsy, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3So instead of getting your stuff back, with the possibility for legal action against those who DIDN'T give it back, you'd rather spend a while in jail for assault? Good plan.
- chocolatetacos, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Don't know about Oregon, but you can legally do just about anything to trespassers in Texas.
- ghank, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Hell yeah good plan, just print off a craigslist receipt showing that he asked to have his head smashed in, when the cops show up, throw the receipt in their face and say "see"
- norman619, on 03/25/2008, -2/+15I'd get my knife out and start slashing some tires. None of those idiots would be leaving.
- veriix, on 03/25/2008, -1/+19That's why they printed it in the first place, they knew that it was too good to be true so they needed proof to justify stealing the guys stuff.
- skankyBacon, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Of course you'd want a printout, even if you thought the ad was fully legit. Neighbors/passersby may not realize that ad was placed.
- YamiJim, on 03/25/2008, -2/+14Codswallop?
+1 but would have preferred poppy *****, and next time please squeeze in a hornswaggled, please. - signal15, on 03/25/2008, -1/+2So what would have happened if that guy had defended his property and shot someone? Isn't OR pretty liberal with their gun laws and don't they have Castle Doctrine?
And, if he did shoot someone taking his property and he was protected by Castle Doctrine, is the person that placed the fake ad liable for manslaughter?
I know if I had 30 people at my front door trying to take my stuff, that I would hit my "cops" button on the alarm system, and do whatever was required to keep people from entering my home and walking off with things.- diggduggjoe, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2If, you yell "Fire" in a crowded theater and someone dies in the chaos that ensues, you will be prosecuted. I do not think claiming it was just a joke would go very far with the authorities.
- dygel, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Besides, how would he try to defend his property? If he owned gun, some cretin surely nabbed that straight away...
- dougmc, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2> but the human hyenas that scurry out to pick someones life apart is mind-boggling.
Hey! I resemble that remark.
Of course, to be fair, when I'm picking through somebody's life, it's a garage sale, or an estate sale or something similar. And I pay for any items I decide that I want, though often I'll offer a price lower than the asking price.
I've picked up a few things off of freecycle, and having things left out where you never even meet the person is not uncommon. But the moment I got an inkling that the guy really didn't want people taking his stuff, be it that the post was forged or he just changed his mind, I'd immediately be like `ok, so how can I help you stop these people who _still_ want to take your stuff?' - jserio, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Reminds of of the scumbags on Slickdeals. They'll print up hundreds of $1.00 off coupons for M&Ms at Target when they are on sale for 99 cents and *still* bitch when the cashier doesn't give them money back! These people make me sick!
* disclaimer - not all people on Slickdeals ere scumbags.

- bethehammer, on 03/25/2008, -2/+71WOW people are really that dumb, I always knew that there were alot of sleepers out there but this truly amazes me. Now I understand how easy it is for dictators/government to get people to do atrocious acts.
- Zarokima, on 03/25/2008, -8/+21And religion. You can't give governments and megalomaniacs all the credit -- you'll make god angry.
- eryximachus, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2I think a better answer would be "now I know why dictators/governments exist"
Many, if not most people, live only according to their instincts. When they are hungry, they steal. When they are satiated, they fornicate. This is still the rule in most of the world today.
Especially when civilization was in its infancy and the world was quite harsh, discipline had to be enforced otherwise starvation and death would result. The truth is democracy and the "free society" is untenable in the long term, as most humans lack the self restraint necessary for such a system to work. At some point, there is no one left from whom the lower classes can steal. Then you have famine, death, and destruction until a small minority rises forth from the ashes once again to impose order on the masses. - dougmc, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1I'm not sure it's dumb. People DO occasionally make posts like that, and it's not dumb to take advantage of other people's spring cleaning.
However, the idea that a printout of a CL post somehow overrides the guy in front of you telling you that he didn't post it and he wants his stuff back ... that's not dumb. It's insane, and I hope these people are arrested for burglary or theft or whatever is appropriate.
- starblink, on 03/25/2008, -20/+2I'll pray for them.

- AriaStar, on 03/25/2008, -4/+62What the hell happened to morals? When the owner tells you in PERSON that he didn't place the ad, how can anyone not think that to take stuff is theft at that point?
Kudos to those who voluntarily returned his stuff. Sad that the day has come when doing the right thing is the minority. Always the minority sticks out because it's uncommon, and so gets attention. Humans never fail to disappoint me anymore.- lazyfisherman, on 03/25/2008, -0/+9Seems like once the feeding frenzy begins, convincing people that you are the real owner of the property is difficult.
- jp12380, on 03/25/2008, -1/+12They see the ad, think this is sweet. They get it in their mind that they are going to get some really good stuff for free and it is justified because they saw the ad. So if the owner starts telling them he did not do it and to return the stuff it does not matter because they have already justified it to themselves that taking his stuff is ok and I bet to them it's not "fair" that he can just change his mind at the last minute. They have made up their mind they are getting free stuff.
Idiots. - Sporky023, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2@AriaStar: there's nothing in this article which implies that those doing the right thing are in the minority. You are simply assuming that, in a case where some people do the right thing and others do not, that those in the right must be the minority. You have a blinding confirmation bias here, and I suggest you get that checked out.
- itsradBrad, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I think Oregon passed the Castle doctrine. That means he has the legal right to protect his property and home with the use and/or threat of using deadly force.

- JRobinson1026, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1I live about 30 minutes away from there... The ad seemed legit. We saw it on Saturday about an hour after it was posted. Creepy to think this can happen so easily. My first thought was that it was an angry customer from his contracting business...
- crapmatic, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1Agreed... if there's one profession with a lot of checkered reputations, it's contractors. Makes you wonder.
- Sporky023, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2"Contractors" ... Do you realize any party with whom another party signs a contract is a "contractor"? I'm a contractor right now, sitting at work, running a study for a small tech company in MA. So I guess you're saying "people who can be hired" is a profession with a lot of checkered reputations ... ?
- Dubbsacc, on 03/25/2008, -2/+1You're on a permanent contract most likely. These are contracts with predetermined lengths, i.e. 6 Months or whatever. When I think of a contractor I think of people who work predetermined jobs, like build this house in 3 months or whatever, then they move on to a new contract from other sources. Independent/Private Contractor would be the proper term.

- xsidekick409, on 03/25/2008, -2/+9Probably because its not the city's job to deal with your personal problems with your neighbor.
- mrcoderga, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3To follow your line of thought, but with a twist, there might also be one of your neighbors who maybe thinks your house looks suspicious, and call the FBI to ask them if they know about it.
