- Canadarm, on 12/30/2007, -9/+15What, Marx but no Mises?
- jmpeagle, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6how many governments have attempted to follow Mises' ideals or at least dropped his name to justify a policy? He may be influential in much of the academic and libertarian world, but I don't thing his impact was as strong as Marx.
- Canadarm, on 12/31/2007, -1/+0We live in a world of relitively free markets and free trade. This is the opposite of what Marx taught and exactly what Mises taught. In fact, Mises students (Hayek, et al.) were largely responsible for driving this change by pushing Mises ideas.
- atomofconsumpti, on 12/31/2007, -2/+2tough debate! although i've never heard of Mises.
- jcm267, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2Adam Smith
- dbt10, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Yeah, let is change this to: "What, Marx but no Adam Smith?"
- jmpeagle, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I think he is in there, right next to Otto von Bismarck
- dbt10, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I totally need to brush up on my famous philosopher head shots...

- khellendros1984, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3No. Guess the artist decided Lenin was close enough.
- scimitar91, on 12/31/2007, -2/+6Two complaints.
1. No Lennon
2. No Jesus
they're like the two most influential people ever
- jmpeagle, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6how many governments have attempted to follow Mises' ideals or at least dropped his name to justify a policy? He may be influential in much of the academic and libertarian world, but I don't thing his impact was as strong as Marx.
- risinginteger, on 12/30/2007, -7/+2Einstein looks like he's upset there's no one to kancho.
- deadlift, on 12/30/2007, -3/+12Just a note, 90% of them are men. Shows which gender is really killin' it.
- apetrie, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2Right, it doesn't say anything about the state of equality throughout history or the opportunities available to women. /sarcasm
We'll never know how influential women could have been in the past if their social status was different, maybe not any more so, maybe much more so, and your comment is over simplification at best.- deadlift, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2"A 29 year-old girl from Toronto, ON Canada who joined Digg on April 28th, 2006"
obvious bias on your post. STOP RIGHT THERE

- Rotzooi, on 12/30/2007, -0/+12for being the gateway cocktail?
- Humptydank, on 12/31/2007, -2/+17Okay, somebody has to stand up for good old Shirl...
(From Wikipedia, mostly)
An argument could be made that she saw the United States through the Depression, giving a measure of hope and innocent distraction at a time when things were at their worst. A measure of this success is that at the height of the Depression she was making $15,000 a week, and Bright Eyes singlehandedly saved Fox from bankruptcy.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is reported to have proclaimed that "as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right."
In 1976, she became the first female Chief of Protocol of the United States which put in her charge of all State Department ceremonies, visits, gifts to foreign leaders and co-ordination of protocol issues with all U.S. embassies and consulates. She was United States Ambassador to Czechoslovakia (1968 and 1989–92) and witnessed the Velvet Revolution. She commented, about her Ambassadorship, "That was the best job I ever had."
Black was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1972, and underwent a mastectomy. She is often remembered as the first celebrity to publicly discuss her involvement with this form of cancer, providing education and inspiration to many. In an interview published on the web page of the The American Cancer Society, actress Barbara Barrie is quoted as saying:
"Shirley Temple Black was the first person who said, on national television, 'I have breast cancer.' It wasn't Betty Ford, it was Shirley Temple, child star. One of the greatest stars of the world ever. And, she was so brave to say that, because first of all, people never said 'cancer' and they never said 'breast,' not in public. She said it and she set the whole ball rolling. People don't remember that, but she did it."
So what the heck, I'd keep her in.- lex0nyc, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6Light Research FTW
- bossm4n, on 12/30/2007, -2/+104Pele', Mike Tyson, Shirley Temple and The Godfather? WTF?
- AdonisEffect, on 12/30/2007, -12/+2I'm pretty sure that's Muhammad Ali, not Mike Tyson.
- sundancekid503, on 12/30/2007, -1/+10I hope it's supposed to be Ali, but judging by the hair it definitely looks more like Tyson.
- MattnJax, on 12/30/2007, -1/+8No, it's Tyson
- tmccool, on 12/30/2007, -1/+22Mike Tyson influenced me to eat your children.
- BruceBogtrotter, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1And to kick their testicles.
- tmccool, on 12/30/2007, -1/+22Mike Tyson influenced me to eat your children.
- danwallace, on 12/30/2007, -1/+19It's Tyson on his ass. Ali just left.
- MattnJax, on 12/30/2007, -0/+8I can see Pele being on the list cause he's the most famous star of the biggest sport in the world, but the others I have no ***** clue why they are on there.
- Mouser58907, on 12/30/2007, -4/+34and no jesus? Religious or not, he has influenced the world more than anyone.
- ElimGarak, on 12/30/2007, -14/+13As a fictional figure that stands in for 2000+ year old philosophy. Not as a real person with actual evidence of his existence.
- petebert, on 12/30/2007, -9/+1this is digg, we all know that already. but like mouser said JC has been pretty huge in world history, wonder how many deaths because of him, more then hitler?
- gllopc, on 12/31/2007, -8/+2Bugs Bunny's has been fairly influential as well, but is not on the list. What do these two characters has in common?
- atomofconsumpti, on 12/31/2007, -4/+1hahaha
- SiNN4R, on 12/31/2007, -7/+7He was a real person he just didn't have magical powers.
- Joshuarr, on 12/31/2007, -3/+4Did he tell you to say that?
- gllopc, on 12/31/2007, -2/+3Even if I agree, neither of us have proof. The collective writings of the existence of a character doesn't mean he exists.
- MrWally, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1Oh right, I forgot. So Abraham Lincoln didn't exist either, right? And either did George Washington or Napoleon or Christopher Columbus?
- atomofconsumpti, on 12/31/2007, -2/+1you are right.
- petebert, on 12/30/2007, -9/+1this is digg, we all know that already. but like mouser said JC has been pretty huge in world history, wonder how many deaths because of him, more then hitler?
- MattnJax, on 12/30/2007, -0/+7Moses might have something to say about that. Remember, Christianity is based on Jewish beliefs. No Moses, no Jesus
- cococooky, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4where is Cleopatra, at least we know she existed.
- MrMeikel, on 12/31/2007, -1/+8I thought it was accepted someone called Jesus was alive at the time, going around preaching/talking to people. Even if you don't believe he was the Son of God, or any of that stuff.
- cococooky, on 12/31/2007, -4/+3Accepted by Christians, but no proof - none of the Historians from that time recorded anything about him.
- petebert, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1I dont think he was suggesting he was real, simply has had a huge impact.
- cococooky, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Its says it right there in his comment "I thought it was accepted someone called Jesus was alive at the time" call me a nut, but it seems to me that sentence indicates he thinks Jesus was real.
- cococooky, on 12/31/2007, -4/+3Accepted by Christians, but no proof - none of the Historians from that time recorded anything about him.
- Scynet, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2We don't know what Jesus looked like if he existed in the first place. You could use the generic white-faced and long-haired version we've learned to know, or a more realistic one like this: http://www.rejesus.co.uk/expressions/faces_jesus/g ...
They're all just quesses though, we can't know a face of a person that lived 2000 years ago anyway.- Scynet, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Sigh, someone fix Digg already...
Again:

- SolidSnake24, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Jesus is there (i think), he's sitting at the table, stoned or something
- ElimGarak, on 12/30/2007, -14/+13As a fictional figure that stands in for 2000+ year old philosophy. Not as a real person with actual evidence of his existence.
- jester55, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3i found saddam hussein and osama
- Sroek, on 12/31/2007, -0/+11The title of the digg submission is misleading. It's not most influential people, it's the most iconic.
- mrblonde314, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5then why is there no beatles???
- MasterPain, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4Thats not Mike Tyson it is obviously Balrog from Street Fighter 2
- mag4mag, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1lol and I was wondering all day where I have seen that guy

- TheVirus, on 12/31/2007, -0/+11If it were Jet Li, he'd be hanging from some strings.
- phpchris, on 12/30/2007, -20/+1It actually looks more like Jet Li.
- Haiz, on 12/30/2007, -7/+15Why is Hitler next to Beethoven, and Moses by Jackie Robinson?!
- MattnJax, on 12/30/2007, -0/+13What's your point? I don't think the placing of the people has any meaning in the picture. Would you rather Hitler be next to Jackie Robinson? Cause that would be screwed up.
- deadlift, on 12/30/2007, -0/+20No, Hitler next to Moses would be screwed up.
- MattnJax, on 12/30/2007, -1/+9How about Hitler next to any minority?
- worthone, on 12/30/2007, -1/+5Hitler next to Jesus?
- Haiz, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6It does. Abraham Lincoln's smiling in the direction of Mao Zedong.
- deadlift, on 12/30/2007, -0/+20No, Hitler next to Moses would be screwed up.
- LemonHerb, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Where's Jackie Robinson?
- random19, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2next to Moses.
- MattnJax, on 12/30/2007, -0/+13What's your point? I don't think the placing of the people has any meaning in the picture. Would you rather Hitler be next to Jackie Robinson? Cause that would be screwed up.
- Ninjao, on 12/30/2007, -24/+4Im hoping the majority of Digg can name at LEAST 10 people in that picture. But who am I kidding?
- iceman0113, on 12/30/2007, -3/+14I spy with my little eye:
Elvis, Ghengis Khan, Napoleon, Ghandi, Mother Theresa, Caesar, Clinton, Michael Jordan, Lincoln, Bush, Fidel Castro, Osama bin Laden, William Shakespeare, Bruce Lee, Pele, Qin, Confucius, and is that Christopher Reeves on the left hand side?- fugazi, on 12/30/2007, -0/+7I see Indiana Jones...
- ElimGarak, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2Looks more like Patric Stewart when he was playing Picard when he in turn was playing Dixon Hill.
- cleanme, on 12/30/2007, -2/+0Who do you think is Christopher Reeve? I can't figure out who you're talking about.
Cheers - theojanke, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4If you're talking about the guy on the top left with the glasses, I think that might be Bill Gates.
- fugazi, on 12/30/2007, -0/+7I see Indiana Jones...
- MattnJax, on 12/30/2007, -9/+2Cum on noww, we dont be dat dum on diigg
- 10GunSalute, on 12/30/2007, -14/+3Cum on your mom now, bitch
- raskali, on 12/31/2007, -2/+2Considering it's a list by a white guy spoon fed on the western world's history, I'm sure most could.
- iceman0113, on 12/30/2007, -3/+14I spy with my little eye:
- BasL, on 12/30/2007, -39/+9Yeah, but where's Steve Jobs?
- psg188, on 12/30/2007, -12/+9People like you are why I hate most apple fanboys.
- BasL, on 12/30/2007, -4/+8Jeezz... I was KIDDING!
And come on, Bill Gates is on it, and so is Bush Senior. As a fanboy I wouldn't even WANT my hero in this lame picture.- ElimGarak, on 12/31/2007, -0/+9BillG is not in there. Although you are right, he should be.
- BasL, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6> BillG is not in there.
Yes he is. Or do you think the guy sitting top left is Christopher Reeves, too?
- mikesty, on 12/30/2007, -3/+3Don't worry, I thought your comment was funny.
- tmccool, on 12/31/2007, -6/+1lol @ -22 for mentioning Jobs' name
p.s. i'm posting this from a macbook pro
- Duilen, on 12/30/2007, -0/+43Shirley Temple should be replaced with Joan of Arc.

- pizzler, on 12/30/2007, -0/+65Can anyone come up with a list of everyone in this pic????
- MattnJax, on 12/30/2007, -0/+7Would have to find out who painted it. Cause there's some confusion as to who some of them are.
- deadlift, on 12/30/2007, -2/+26Yeah, especially when it comes to the Chinese people in the pic.
I'm just saying!- Gav0510, on 12/30/2007, -0/+6Is that Yao Ming?!
- ElimGarak, on 12/31/2007, -3/+1I think it is a Russian guy Glazunov or something. At least there are a ton of Russians in there, or people that influenced Russian culture and history. Possibly that's why Moses and Jesus aren't there (can't see them at least). They are not real big in Russia.
- cephelo, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1The estimated 100 million Russian Orthodox Church members would like to disagree (in Russia alone; there are nearly 150 million of them world-wide). The Russian Orthodox Church is, in fact, a split from the Roman Catholic Church.
- mirunit, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1Look at the table and up front (with the sheep). Both are there.

Also is that Teddy Rosavelt between them?

The same guy who picked out Marcos thinks that could be Henry Ford sitting next to Chaplin, notice the car by his foot could be a model T.
John Wayne next to Bush?

- deadlift, on 12/30/2007, -2/+10Actually now that I think about it, Muslims do not want Muhammed to be portrayed so as to stray away from making his image into an idol and worshipping it. It makes sense now why Muhammed (pbuh) was not included.
- burkay, on 12/31/2007, -0/+8actually he is included... but not drawn.

- crazycracker911, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Silly!Balrogg isn't a food!
- FuriousGopher, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Agreed; Replace him with Terry Fox

- darkane, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2I had no idea that the Virgin Mary and Bin Laden were the original leaders of the KKK. I'm glad this painting cleared that up.

- Monkeydew06, on 01/02/2008, -0/+0erm... Jesus is real, but his divinity is questionable. Thus Urusai fails.

- pcsurfer17, on 12/31/2007, -5/+4ha your a moron, he was a real person
- CannibalTom, on 12/31/2007, -3/+2Proof please?
- FranksValli, on 12/31/2007, -3/+2It's more likely he existed and was an actual person than not. What people dispute is whether he performed miracles and was resurrected. Even people who doubt his divinity usually agree that he actually existed. What makes you doubt he didn't exist?
- FranksValli, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Someone would rather dig me down than reply to an honest comment?
- einstein37, on 12/31/2007, -2/+3Where is your proof George Washington was real?
- LemonHerb, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3Um, actual historical record outside of one fictional source.
- STARTSOMETHING, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2I know what your saying Einstein. Give it 200 more years, and you could get people to actually doubt his existence.
- dullly, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2Nobody disputes Jesus's existence you fool. He was written about by Josephus and the new testament which is an extremely accurate historical record of that period. It is all backed up by modern day Archaeology. Additionally, Whether or not he was the son of God, you would be an idiot not to realize that he is far and away the most influential person that has ever walked the planet. 2nd would be Rush Limbaugh, third is a tie between Reagan, Churchill, and Lincoln.
- orxor, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Josephus never met Jesus, he wrote that paragraph around 96 CE. He barely mentions him in a short paragraph which has been shown to be mostly a forgery. Good evidence you have there.
However theologians like John Marco Allegro, who was one of the translators of the dead sea scrolls has said that even *if* someone by the name of Jeshua lived around 30 CE he is not the person that was written about in new testament.
I would like to see your archaeological evidence. Please cite examples.- FranksValli, on 01/01/2008, -2/+1I'm skeptical of the fact that we should want archaeological evidence in order to prove that any person actually existed. So in the MANY cases where we have no "archaeological evidence" or anything tangible, we should immediately rule out that the person actually existed? That's way too strict of a criteria and we would have VERY LITTLE history if that was seriously applied to all historical persons. Rather, we should approach history with good faith, assuming that people mentioned in history actually existed, UNLESS we have reason to doubt their existence.
What's your reason to doubt that Jesus actually existed? - dullly, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1A better question is what archaeological evidence contradicts the new testament. Since you seem to think it was made up by someone there should be mountains of innacuracies. Answer = none.

- lilkelkel, on 12/31/2007, -2/+7whether your a Christian or not, you cant deny that Jesus was a real historical person whose teachings have had a major impact on the world for nearly two thousand years.
- LemonHerb, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4Why not? There is no real reson to believe Jesus ever existed beyond one's own faith. Which is great for people who believe that, but the story of King Arthur had a huge historical impact too. So did all the tales of Greco/Roman gods, and most other major religions that have passed through this world. So if being a real person is a requirement of major world impact then you have to reconsider your views on the historical existance of a great deal of characters.
- scimitar91, on 12/31/2007, -2/+1Christianity is the world's leading religion. Whatever he was, I'd say that's pretty influential.
- LemonHerb, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3True, but it's art not a declaration. The artist put in who he/she wanted and where it made sense. I mean there is no Darwin there either.
- Sawta, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2@ LemonHerb: Besides, who would you even be able to sit next to Jesus? He'd obviously be stealing any thunder that they had.

- sirlancelot88, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2Ayn Rand wasn't even a respected philosopher in HER day. She never published in any peer reviewed journal and most academics considered her no more than a simple author of fiction.
Note to libertarians: Most people IRL don't think like you. Only on the internet.- chopsky, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2Picasso and van Gogh weren't respected in their day either. That means nothing. It took some time for people to appreciate her philosophy, but today she has massive influence any many people. As Rojahon said, Atlas is the 2nd most influential book in America.
Ayn Rand actually abhorred the libertarians. She felt they were the most dangerous of parties as they had the ability to prove through their 'impure' Capitalism, that Capitalism was not an ideal.
