The Largest Insects on Earth [Pics]
divinecaroline.com — Cannibals, dancers, and pheromone emitters —some of the largest (and endangered) insects in the world are nurturing mothers in the wild, wearing poison as perfume, and crawling up human backs as friendly pets.

- thetzfreak, on 05/07/2008, -0/+10That's the largest stick bug I have ever seen.
- ElbertF, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Even larger then most sticks I've seen.
- BTraina, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1One time i saw a giant tree bug.
- crwills, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3That's what she said.
- stignordas, on 05/07/2008, -1/+38I can't help but think of Starship Troopers.
- gnorth75, on 05/07/2008, -2/+6You're some sort of big, fat, smart-bug, aren't you?
- greeniemeani, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Do you want to know more?
- IglooBurner, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0or starcraft... damn i think im gonna skip gym after work.... again...
- homedaddy, on 05/07/2008, -0/+12damn that water bug is creepy looking. funny that their reaction to humans mirrors my likely reaction to them if I were to find one while swimming.
- PtoS382, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5It looks like the Cloverfield monster
- mrtracy, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1I had no idea bugs were able to get this big, and here in california we think masquito eaters are enormous...
- KokomoNYC, on 05/07/2008, -1/+8These guys are wussies. Back when the atmosphere was saturated with oxygen, there were dragonflies 6 feet long.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Try tropical centipedes. They can get a foot long, and look like the Darth Vaders of the insect world; they're aggressive and when they bite you can get a tennis ball sized bruise that feels like fire, also it kills small children. On top of that we have giant freaking cockroaches that I swear cross-breed with the local rat population; to make everything worse, tropical bugs tend to be fearless. If you see a cockroach and do the usual turn on the light and stomp routine it just kinds looks at you like, "what? You think you're tough?" then they fly _at_ you with a sound straight out of hell emanating from their hard little wings. Ugh.
- accessviolation, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Kill them with fire
- Tomchei, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2and a can of hairspray
- accessviolation, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Kill them with fire
- blofeld9999, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1The entire country thinks your Mom is enormous.
- skidme, on 05/07/2008, -1/+7I think I might need a shotgun to swat that giant moth....Brrrr
- Unzorn, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Do not use a shotgun to kill a mosquito.
*password accepted*
- Unzorn, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Do not use a shotgun to kill a mosquito.
- trogdorBURN, on 05/07/2008, -4/+15EWWWWWWWW
- fuze44, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2They forgot Mothman.
- kaleesh, on 05/07/2008, -2/+5if that thing come by my house, I kill it!
- anononon, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4SILENCE!!! I KEEEEEL YOU!
- moletimer, on 05/07/2008, -1/+9The picture of the giant burrowing cockroach sent shivers down my spine...
- ticketmack, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3"Some believe the species to be great pets due to their cleanliness, odorlessness, and inability to crawl out of a tank."
Aww, poor dumb bug.
- ticketmack, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3"Some believe the species to be great pets due to their cleanliness, odorlessness, and inability to crawl out of a tank."
- JimboLimbo, on 05/07/2008, -23/+0Hilary has no chance against obama.
she is also a bitch of a lady- inigomntoya, on 05/07/2008, -3/+3Yeah - why wasn't SHE on this list...?
- beatrixkiddo, on 05/07/2008, -3/+2the real question is, which insect does she resemble?
- TBorachio, on 05/07/2008, -2/+2The giant mantis is just creepy.
- trappleton, on 05/07/2008, -3/+3I'm a fan of Nephila, genus of absolutely gigantic spiders. I got a pretty cool photo of a Nephila pilipes piscatorum that was about a foot across when i accidentally stumbled into her nest once.
- truthhammer, on 05/07/2008, -5/+0Largest Insects on Earth? Where's Olbermann?
- KingLeo, on 05/07/2008, -3/+5what about a giant horseshoe crab? http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/1387/bug016ju.jpg
- wannymahoots, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Its not an insect is it though.
- stignordas, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Mutant aliens aren't included in this list.
- DrSnugglebunny, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5Fail. Not an insect. A different kind of arthropod; chelicerate.
- DrSnugglebunny, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Clarification- a horseshoe crab is a chelicerate but the pics you linked to are of a deep sea isopod, a crustacean:
http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=deep+sea+isopo ...
and still not an insect...

- EricAnderton, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2It's not technically an insect, but I was going to post that here myself. Good call.
- kromagnon, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3That's neither a horseshoe crab, nor an insect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_crab - ElbertF, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Isn't that one those creatures from Dune?
- KingGorilla, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Awh! Cute puppy!
- scoetrain, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Holy Living *****.
- tmaiden, on 05/07/2008, -1/+9Tell me that Mantis doesn't look pimp as *****, just chillin' there in the street.
- Oppslagsverk, on 05/07/2008, -1/+12When I see those pictures, I remind myself of why i love Norway. Small insects only here^^,
- stignordas, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Yes, but the mosquitos are vicious!
- eightfivezero, on 05/07/2008, -7/+1I think I just threw up inside my mouth a little.
- Stupidumb, on 05/07/2008, -2/+4My defense mechanism is very similar to the giant water bug
- Rotzooi, on 05/07/2008, -8/+2I was wondering why we see so many DivineCaroline articles on Digg. The 'About' makes it all clear:
" "Caroline" rhymes with Divine - a word that describes every single woman we know who's working to compose a life. So we went with it. But the site isn't about any "one" woman. It's about every woman and the bonds that connect us even though we've never met. "
Obviously Digg's demographic. - Jan33, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3now get them all to team up and you got a good movie
- DrSnugglebunny, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3I tried to eat one of those diving beetles in Thailand once (slightly fried), but it was one of the rare times I could not bear to eat more than one bite of an exotic meal. It was one of the most vomitous things I've ever tasted-- and insanely spicy!
The fried bamboo maggots, however, were lovely; a taste and texture much like French's potato sticks. - Picklesworth, on 05/07/2008, -5/+0That praying mantis mating procedure sounds surreal. I did not know that.
*shudder*
...I did not WANT to know that! - Picklesworth, on 05/07/2008, -7/+0That praying mantis mating procedure sounds surreal. I did not know that.
*shudder*
...I did not WANT to know that! - viewtiful4ever, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3when i went to costa rica, I seen a fly that looked like a small bird... that thing freaked me out.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4They mentioned the Goliath beetle was 4 ounces, which didn't seem like very much to me. Then I realized that's a quarter pounder right there. Think about that next time you're eating at Mcdonald's ...
- lennybird, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2What's even worse: It has wings! Try swatting that thing away.... Good God.
- DanBoodro, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Reminded me of an old digg submission.

- armestar07, on 05/07/2008, -1/+12Don't forget the clock spider: http://media.urbandictionary.com/image/large/clock ...

- haulboss, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Learn something new everyday
- redscofield, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2great article... very informative...
- hadak, on 05/07/2008, -3/+1FTA: [Giant Water Bug] "...When the prey resembles a human, the water bug plays dead, emitting fluid from its anus."
That's not a side effect if my ass is going...
I'd say that's an effect, really!
"Fire in the hole!" Bad day!
- How you're doing, Bob? - Just a little anal leakage, Ted.
Bob, you wanna get out of the pool right now? - chaos7, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1crazy bugs
- Flatlineskillz, on 05/07/2008, -0/+11I wish they would have had more pics with something to show the scale. Alot of them you cant really tell how big they are. And before anyone else says is.... Thats what she said!
- atmarcin, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Makes me want to stock up on Raid. For some reason I have no problem with these things being endangered.
- ancalagon73, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0Is anyone besides me itchy after reading that?
- Modiga, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Since when did England have a Queen Alexandra during the _Victorian_ era?
- jojowasa, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1She was the wife of the King after Victoria, Edward.
- Modiga, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Ah, I see. I always take dates when stated with monarchs to be the range in which they reigned.
- jojowasa, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1She was the wife of the King after Victoria, Edward.
- nj10ii, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Did you know the insect populations combined weight, weighs more than the human population combined weight?
- tradwolley, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3It would have been nice if more pictures had actually had some way to compare the size of the bug.
- SLP1111, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Exactly- what was the point of this with no size comparison (besides the stick bug)? I could take a macro picture of a ladybug and call it THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD!! and with no size comparison you couldn't refute that.

- anononon, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Where's Godzilla when you need him?
- bbitmaster, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3This reminds me of another site I found where they have large insects fighting.
http://japanesebugfights.com/ - thedrizzle21, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Damn nature! You scary!
- radink360, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2If i had a stick bug on me like that, I'd be screaming like a little girl.. ugh i hate bugs.. yuk yuk yuk...
- Phlieger, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Hostile takeover.
- MajorPaine, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6For those looking for images of the bugs in the article that better show the scale, here are images of each that show thier relative size to a human hand:

Giant Water Bug -- http://www.bugman123.com/Bugs/Waterbug.jpg- AndreRollins, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1This definitely gives me a better idea of exactly how big they are. Cool pics but - WOW! ICK! YUCK!
- Zoshchenko, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1This is fascinating, but the photographs really need more references for scale. A full-frame picture of a dust mite looks HUGE without anything to compare it to - and they are super tiny. Still, big bugs will one day rule the planet and feed on our rotting flesh. Mark my words!
- deepdiggdude, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4Biggest by far:
http://www.geocities.com/random_darkness/Mothra1.h ... - summerday008, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Sick. I'm never leaving my house again.
- Jergens, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2That bug is big! And scary! Go away bug! I'm Brian Fellow!

No, it means a father's work is just getting the hell started. - XBMC, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2This is the largest insect in the world !
