Quiz: Locate Countries of the World
lizardpoint.com — From a 2006 study by CNN, 6 out of 10 couldn't find Iraq on a map, 47% couldn't find India, and 75% couldn't find Israel... can you do better?
- 1032 diggs
- digg it
- InSeverance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2569/117 for Europe...and I'm from Europe :(
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Tststs! That's bad man. What was the problem? The Balkans and the Baltic states?
- ani-pockdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50Let the Animanicas teach you where they are all at...
http://anipockexpress.blogspot.com/2007/03/where-exactly-are-all-those-countries.html - airmann90, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Seems to be down... http://www.duggmirror.com/
*Update*
Erggh, bury me, bad mirror... - nox327, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Yeah, and we say Americans are ignorant
BTW I got 111 out of 117. It was hard clicking on Luxenburg as it was so small. - dftpnkezln, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@nox327
Thats a great score! I'm sure all the 'luxenburgians' are delighted you know where they live. - reservoirdog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+182/117 for Europe. :(
- ascott9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6if you like this you need to seriously try geosense.net
its a online web-based game you play against other people
http://www.geosense.net - furplepig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@dftpnkezln
luxembourgers.
- Zinite, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5I feel so unintelligent right now.
- Software2, on 10/12/2007, -27/+7I don't see why you should. Unless you're a geography teacher, there's no point in memorizing every country.
- t3hNinj4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24The game would be a lot better if it would take alternate country names. England, Great Britain and Britain don't work for the United Kingdom, and USA and The United States of America don't work; only United States does. You also have to put in People's Republic of China instead of just China, and for some reason North Korea and South Korea don't seem to work either. It's an interesting concept, but it needs some work.
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16This has nothing to do with intelligence and a lot with ignorance.
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14"...England, Great Britain and Britain don't work for the United Kingdom"
They are different things! England would only be one of the 'states' of the UK. While Great Britain doesn't include Northern Ireland which is part of the UK. So only United Kingdom would be correct. Consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Until a few weeks ago I also didn't realize there's a difference between GB and the UK. - Domiko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ t3hNinj4
Because, you know, England and United Kingdom are synonymous.
edit: Curse you, cyberdork! - patik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This one is much better:
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm
You can play a few different ways: drag the country into place, type the name, click on the country whose name appears, and so on. It also does capitals.
- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49Not with loading times like that i can't. :(
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7What in the hell are these "United States"? And where the hell is America?
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Homer: [expansive] So, how was everybody's day at school?
Bart: Horrifying!
Lisa: Pointless!
Marge: Exhausting. It took the children forty minutes to locate Canada
on the map.
Homer: Marge, anyone can miss Canada, all tucked away down there.
http://www.snpp.com/episodes/2F19.html
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Homer: [expansive] So, how was everybody's day at school?
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Iraq is the little one at the bottom near Australia.
- throwingks, on 10/12/2007, -20/+4No, it's the one next to the mushroom cloud.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I never knew north korea was all big like that!
- jbrown101st, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Screw that... I can't even locate every state in the U.S.
- jeremy66158, on 10/12/2007, -24/+2What was the "even" part of your sentence? Are you saying that even you can't do even though you are smart?
- Bansuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Jeremy,
the "even" refers to taking a quiz on world countries when he can't even locate all of the states. pretty simple. speak much? - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Jeremy, your interpretation would have worked if he had put "even" before the word "I". In the way he wrote it, it doesn't.
- tbilltthemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I will admit I am no good at the states of the US, and I am from the US, but I am pretty good at the nations.
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got 135/150 for the states.
- h00paj00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always mix up Wyoming and Colorado...
- cr4ft, on 10/12/2007, -25/+14I wouldn't be surprised if Americans couldn't find America on a map
- davejr, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6Well, if it were up your ass eating a ham sandwich you would know it......If America is so bad to you then why are you posting on a web site based in America? Perhaps you should be sticking to your own country of origin if we bother you.
- Stirk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6Americans are not bad at geography, it is just a very common misconception.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Plus, even if they're wrong, it's not a problem... they're the only ones with the military power to change the name of countries.
- icewater, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Yeah, American kids couldn't find their own country, most thought that Brazil was the US. Nice. Geography isn't a huge priority for any American because they have grown up thinking that their country is the biggest and baddest so knowing is not important.
Heh, in one study they even got the largest border against another country wrong! Mexico.....right....
That's what you get when the US is richest 3rd world country...the people are the losers. - tbilltthemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4The sad thing is you are probably right(I would know; I live in the US!)
- msomers, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7http://duggmirror.com/playable_web_games/Quiz_Locate_Countries_of_the_World/
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Still doesn't work because duggmirror isn't recursive; the site in question requires you to view other pages.
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1That has nothing to do with recursivity...
Remember, folks - to understand recursion, you must first understand recursion. - archlich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah I'm sorry, I was thinking in code. If I were to create a website that cached a site, and all subsequent links on a page I would use recursion. Next time I'll use simpler words.
- ferrofluid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4isn't Armageddon near Albuquerque.
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, over by Megiddo.
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Well, it's down :
- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Thanks for the info Sherlock.
- fenris6644, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8The site's been down ever since this made it to the home page. Yet somehow 50 people have managed to digg the story in that time... hmmmm...
- blablaman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Digging is a nice way to bookmark for later use.
- fenris6644, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It'd be cool if there was a way to distinguish between the two.
- jezmck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5@blablaman: why not use bookmarks? or if on multiple machines, del.icio.us?
- RunnyBabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9jazzle - Bookmarks within my browser would just end up too cluttered, and though it probably sounds silly, del.icio.us's interface confuses me. Digg, which calls itself a bookmarking site, works for me.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm going to digg this story just because you said that.
- cornfednbred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Have geography teachers started using Google Earth in the classroom yet? I wish we would've had that capability back when. The page was down so I couldn't visit to see what it's all about.
- Habemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nope. They are using this new cool thing called an "overhead projector" though. You can write on clear acetate with reasable AV markers and the whole class can see it. And instead of chalk boards they have this cool thing called "white boards" that doesn't have any dust. "boop" And film strips, have I told you about film strips with synchronized audio using a record player or cassette narration? "boop"
- blindbe2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Check out this geography knowledge base:
http://www.ilike2learn.com/ilike2learn/index.html - Pelapp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40Similar game, with prettier graphics: http://www.purposegames.com/geoquiz
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This one is pretty neat, thanks.
- mehss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Mirror anyone?
- 1721, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8apparently digg has a lot of closet geography fiends
- PurpZeY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Mirror Needed Please.
- JorgeGonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Where's the ***** mirror?
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26/10 Americans...
- gonpost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Have no clue what you're talking about...
- lsmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Would be awesome if any of these games worked.
- Wince, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Sadly the test is not loading for me but 60% of US citizens can't find Iraq on the map. That proves what the rest of the world have known for some time,
- SkittlesUSA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1http://www.duggmirror.com
- PyroKittens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://www.lizardpoint.com.nyud.net:8090/fun/geoquiz/
- aprilbegins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1147/162 for Africa. The eighth grade Geography Bee champion in the back of my mind isn't very impressed, especially since I deliberately got one wrong to find out what that country was for later reference.
- DerekJ212, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Check out www.geosense.net
Its a great game if you want to learn country locations! - Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate to sound like an idiot, but I'm against the use of lack of geographical knowledge as a basis for insults against intelligence.
- Bansuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So true, people learn and retain what they enjoy. If you've ever talked to hardcore gamers they know more about the maps of the games they are playing than most people know about the real world. Or the depth of knowledge of most computer enthusiasts, or car nuts, the list goes on and on. If you like world maps, good for you, but I agree with spazkake on this one.
- BowieX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because it's always been *MY* weak spot, I decided to come up with a rhyme for remembering Africa's geography. I'm not a genius poet -- though organising 53 African countries into a rhyme was pretty difficult -- but this did help me get 100%.
SOUTH (14)
Start from the bottom, left hand to right hand,
South Africa holds Lesotho and Swaziland
Lined above in a five-long streak,
Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique
None you say with a stress on the first...
Madagascar’s the fifth, through water traversed,
The isles of Comoros and Seychelles swam here,
Back to the mainland, Angola and Zambia
Malawi, the column, supports Tanzania,
That was the south, the middle’s easier!
CENTRAL/EAST (16)
Here the Democratic Republic of Congo,
Is Africa’s heart, beating loud on a bongo.
Travel due west and you’ll meet four,
Congo and Gabon, each five letters, no more
The following two are longer to say:
Equatorial Guinea and Sao Tome & Principe
Whereas east, up and ‘round Lake Victoria, will spin ya,
Through Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya!
Somalia’s boomerang points out to Asia,
And in to Djibouti and Eritrea
Egypt on Sudan are shaped pyramidic,
When you add Ethiopia and Central African Republic.
NORTH (13)
Follow this path of neighbouring nations,
To see the rest, if you have any patience!
West of the Republic, circling Lake Chad,
Are Cameroon, Nigeria, Niger and… Chad
Along the north coast, west to Morocco,
Libya, Tunisia and Algeria we follow,
The Canary Islands where it’s rainier,
Then Western Sahara and Mauritania,
Cape Verde is out to sea,
But directly inland is Mali.
WEST (10)
The final ten make you think of food,
Especially when you’re in a finishing mood
Senegal eats Gambia, and then there’s Guinea,
And Guinea-Bissau which is its McMini
Sierra Leone is the plate, so circular,
More so than Liberia and Cote D’Ivoire
“A hamburger on the side” is our final logo,
The bread’s Ghana and Benin, the meat is Togo.- BowieX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1...
Ladies and gentlemen, did you enjoy the show?
Oops! I forgot one! It's Burkina Faso!
:p
- BowieX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1...
- tallguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone scoring less than 33/36 (because the Southern Ocean is not commonly used) on the world map is severely lacking in the geography dept.
- Rapax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Europe one has an error in it. What's labelled as 'Montenegro' is actually Kosovo. Montenegro is further southeast, towards greece, near Macedonia.
- Aquashark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Europe 113/117
(god damn.. i always mistake Latvia for Lithuania and the reverse)
Africa 81/162
hmm.. damn.. made some stupid mistakes no doubt about it. the map in my head was oh so wrong - Joeshie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Americans suck at geography. Not because we just suck at it, but because the schools don't teach geography that much. You have a couple of classes in primary and middle school and that's about it.
That and the fact that American people are more isolated from the rest of the world than other countries are simply because of the immense size of our own country. - Wareagle77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+078 in Europe
- Seth024, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Europe: 98/117 yay!!
Everyone from the USA should try the quiz about the different States. - rbedi100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Asia: 92/96!! Yeah!
About the CNN study-that's pretty bad but another study showed that a majority of American 18-24 year old high school graduated couldn't locate the UNITED STATES on a world map... - Sh4rp3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0115/177 for Europe. ^_^. I suck slightly at Asia though, and I don't fancy my chances at Africa.
