- doctorfungi, on 01/29/2008, -4/+2Wow... time to get a new host. My website's IP is shared by 499 websites.
- thailand1972, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7That's normal. Shared hosting can mean you share up to 2000 websites (I've known shared hosting to be that bad). Shared hosting sucks.
- MalDON, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Mediatemple.
- Kidane, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3you'll see several hundred sites per IP address on Media Temple but it doesn't matter with the way they do clustering. it's name based hosting anyway, who cares abotu ip addresses?
- BGog, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4You could be behind a load balancer.
- scottc, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3The quality of shared web hosting cannot be determined simply by the number of sites hosted on an IP address - there are far too many other factors. A good web server can serve many thousands of simple sites if it's configured properly and the total traffic to the sites is at a reasonable level.
Also, the number of sites on an IP address does not equal the number of sites on a server. Web servers have more than one IP and most have sites on multiple IPs.

- flashingcurser, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Well, actually reverse dns only has pointer (PTR) records for one IP mapped to one domain. in-addr-arpa can only have one pointer per domain. This actually is a their own database of A records.
Try:
dig -X 123.123.123.123
Then you will see why this is cool. Often, unless you are an isp, you cannot control reverse dns.
