Bill Gates on the Daily Show promoting Windows Vista
youtube.com — In case you missed it, here is Bill Gates on the daily show. He talks about Windows Vista, jetpacks, IPTV, robots, and other topics. He's no Steve Jobs, but I know you want to see this.

- listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -41/+99I'm sorry. I like Jon Stewart as much as the next digger, but didn't he seem a bit like a Micosoft shill? I mean seriously. A double-length interview that barely poked fun at Gates? wtf.
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -20/+75Maybe Colbert will take him on and ask some real questions regarding OS X Tiger and how similar the two OS's are. As a spoof of course.
- willclarke, on 10/12/2007, -33/+15The whole point of guests going on nighttime talk shows is to promote stuff. If Jon was a complete ass to Gates, he wouldn't get guests like Gates in the first place. It's like when that little Republican twerp from Crossfire (I forgot his name) was mad that Stewart wasn't harder on John Kerry - you've gotta be nice or you don't get people like presidential candidates or the richest man in the world to come on your show.
That said, I think Bill Gates did a good job of showing what a moron he is without any prodding from Jon. - Anotious, on 10/12/2007, -32/+2http://digg.com/videos/comedy/The_Daily_Show_Jon_Stewart_Interviews_Bill_Gates
you newb, stop duping - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -15/+53John Stewart has always been a shill. He's the Larry King of comedy. He doesn't ask tough questions so he can get good guests.
- Reidtheweed01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27I think the reason it was so long might have something to do with the fact that he has the richest man in the world sitting right there. Also it might have to do with the fact that the products bill gates makes have a huge impact on the world.
He's not just some guy in the remake of a ***** 1980's horror movie. - reugeneg, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7"John Stewart has always been a shill"
you are *****' clueless.... larry king of comedy? go back to your hole - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Jon always does softball interviews. To some extent, you have to pay some respect to the most successful self-made man in the world.
Actually, in reality, Jon Stewart is a Mac user. He's stated on several occasions that he has a Mac that he uses to type and play Doom, and also that he knows absolutely nothing about computers or how they work. - coldstatue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I think Gates comes off as vulnerable enough without being picked on. I think Stewart has some decency too.
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I think if you look at Jon Stewart's stance on Crossfire's "killing America" he's not necessarily for the kind of ripping to shreds that Colbert does or attempts to do. He can certainly stand up for himself as anyone would know if they'd seen that clip, but on his show he's more from the old school of tv host, where he tries to present the person he's interviewing in the best light.
Personally, sometimes it comes off as kind of boring and it doesn't feel like it's in the same spirit of the rest of the show. It's only the draw of the star power they manage to get that keeps it engaging, but with guests like Gates and various big political figures it does keep things interesting. - Pxtl, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2To me he was just *dull*. I mean, that was the kind of stuff I'd expect to see on The View. Jon Stewart quite plainly knows nothing whatsoever about technology... which is fine, but it makes him interviewing Bill Gates seem thoroughly pointless. It was like watching Stephen Hawking interview Jean Paul Gautier about fashion - the two men have absolutely nothing to talk about to each other.
- mpower512, on 10/12/2007, -67/+12I think Gates seemed a bit anti-social.
You'd think with his billions of dollars he could hire some people to teach him how to do an interview.
Maybe it was just poorly planned. He's probably busy doing a lot with Vista and we only found out he'd be on The Daily Show a few days ago.
*Sigh*- Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -20/+155"You'd think with his billions of dollars he could hire some people to teach him how to do an interview."
Uh, you sit there and answer questions. He did a fine job at that. Eat *****. - ocanica, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Damn why are you guys getting so defensive, it's a comedy show, get over it.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -17/+2goes to show you can't buy personality
- kaiwai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8When you've got more money than a bull can *****, who gives a toss about personality.
Oh, and want to see creapy, obviously you haven't see the Quark CEO - esaks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1With all the money in the world he doesn't NEED to learn how to do proper interviews.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -20/+155"You'd think with his billions of dollars he could hire some people to teach him how to do an interview."
- r3drum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+95damn.. he left before Jon got his password.
- holmes101, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5Geeks don't need passwords. We just think and the computer will log us in. Unless of course, its vista. That feature has been left out for the next version or two.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1At one point I actually felt that one of his passwords, was the pet or whatever question Jon has asked him, since Bill seemed to kinda 'hang' for a few seconds before he would 'ease' again....
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Maybe he had to pee really bad.
- mcduckov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hah, I've seen many many people on talk shows (even experienced guests) shake and then get up to walk away. Often they catch themselves and remember not to. But it is a natural reaction to say goodbye, shake hands and then walk away. Bill is just a little bit unique in that he did not catch himself and kept right on walkin.
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@mcduckov
I think the reason he "hung" for a sec there was because Gates isn't really a personable guy. He seems more detail oriented and into lines of reasoning that lead to a tangible end product. He's a bottom line sort of guy, it seems. When Jon asked him about his pets, the question probably threw Gates, and he had no idea what to make of it for a few seconds there. It didn't make sense, and therefore, it just didn't register. Of course, Jon is a comedian, and good with nuances and social interaction, and his question was subtly times for comedic impact. His question was basically a little social landmine which Gates had no natural defense against.
Which actually in a way puts some of Windows' past security flaws into some perspective. If you can't think the way the scammers and virus writers do at a basic level, how can you possibly attempt to stay ahead of them. It also may explain his running off set. - rcam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1...
- iluvspokane, on 10/12/2007, -37/+7Do I sound crazy when I say that advertising Vista is totally unnecessary? I mean come on. Anyone who knows anything about computers knows that its coming out and knows if they want it or not. I'm sure most of us will spend the next few months explaining to our Girlfriends and Parents why they should upgrade.
I just can't for the life of my imagine a person tuning into the daily show and saying "Holy crap Vista came out. I will have to go to the store and buy it."- reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -13/+48"I'm sure most of us will spend the next few months explaining to our Girlfriends and Parents why they should upgrade."
Is there a 'not' missing from that statement? - xaaronreevesx, on 10/12/2007, -12/+61Holy crap Vista came out. I will have to go to the store and buy it. Thanks for showing me this clip!
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -26/+3"Holy crap Vista came out. I will have to go to the store and buy it. Thanks for showing me this clip!"
How was that rock you've been living under for the past few years? - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15I think Vista's marketing is going to be extremely important. 95% of what has been said about it before it's release has been negative. Insane DRM, dropped features, delays, high system requirements, hardware/software incompatibility, expensive..
I used to go out and buy new Microsoft operating systems soon after their release but I'm not doing that with Vista. Why do I want to pay for $400 (non-upgrade) for the full product that promises to actually limit me more then enable me to do new things? The DRM scenario is a nightmare. - xigxag, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Do you not understand that the VAST majority of PC users/buyers are not like us? They don't keep up on OS wars and upgrades. They will go to bestbuy to buy a laptop, and say "Hey, Mr. Geeksquad guy...what is this Vista thing?" Then they will proceed to get unknowingly raped with a $300 memory upgrade and a warranty that costs as much as the machine.
- Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The DRM thing really doesn't appear to be as bad as everyone says. Windows Vista will be able to play the high definition protected videos because it has the capability to do so, it's not automatically going to cripple everything in your computer and subject it to DRM. They're simply making it so that it will play movies and music that are encrypted using the latest DRM schemes. No doubt Apple will do the same thing if it hasn't already, and maybe the Linux fans will find a way to play those protected files as well.
It has the capability to play back those DRM protected files, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. You could argue that it encourages vendors to use DRM but in the end it's going to be the consumers that decide.
- reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -13/+48"I'm sure most of us will spend the next few months explaining to our Girlfriends and Parents why they should upgrade."
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Between this and Dmitry Martin, it's apparently MS Windows Vista night on Comedy Central.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3That should tell you why Stewart had to give Gates all those softball questions.
- aprocter, on 10/12/2007, -35/+11"whos new windows vista program goes on sale..."
did anyone else cringe when he said program?- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24A kernel is a type of program.
/pedantic - Rekzai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Yeah I was offended.
- SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47I felt violated
- LordVoldemort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Everything your computer is doing is the result of one giant program; he's essentially correct.
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24A kernel is a type of program.
- danakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34"Hey, do you have pets?!"
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28I wasn't sure what he was gettig at when he asked that, I don't think Bill was either. That's the beauty of it.
- Cannon13, on 10/12/2007, -29/+13Uhh, his password. That would explain the audience laughing.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Uhh, he knew that. That would explain "wasn't sure." Note the past tense.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Beebalow is correct. I didn't stop watching the interview at that point, because if I did, I wouldn't have heard Bill say, "That's not my password."
- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That part had me laughing XD. "What was the name of your pet when you were a kid?" lol
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Loved it! Although I'm pretty sure Gates probably uses biometrics.
- Oakenshield, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2"In case you missed it, here is Bill Gates on the daily show. He talks about Windows Vista, jetpacks, IPTV, robots, and other topics. He's no Steve Jobs, but I know you want to see this."
I know you're wrong.
I'd rather serve as Kim Jong Il's fluffer. - cubee, on 10/12/2007, -28/+4Well he sure does hires 14 years kids,
- inbred, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32You sure does types like one.
...excuse me, that was rude.

- randomguru, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20next up.... Linus Torvalds
- captjc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I would pay to see that
- LordVoldemort, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11But not for your OS?
I'm assuming, correctly, that you use GNU/Linux. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2
next up.... Linus Torvalds
Torvalds doesn't have the millions to pay Comedy Central to put him on the show.
I would love to see him on though. Maybe we should all write in and tell them that we need to hear a rebuttal to Gates' interview.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Now I know why Bill doesn't like to talk candidly with people, he's terrible at it. When I watched him tonight, I realized that he's a gigantic nerd, a nervous guy, jokes going over his head, not knowing how to talk to the laypeople, or about anything that he's not currently working on. (I suspect that he's got somebody working on the TalkieTV as we speak). What's funny is, he's loaded, a genius, and is married to one of the hottest women to ever be on TV news. Oh dear sweet irony, how I love, and loathe, thee.
- zeptobyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Just because he's brilliant doesn't mean he has people skills. Really, great engineering and social ability are not often found on the same person.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I concur, and if I didn't make that clear in my original post, i thank you for clarifying that.
- davidlow, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8When people say Bill Gates is a genius, is that just cuz he has to be smart to have made all that money? Or am I missing something about his career? From what I know about him, he just seems like the luckiest nerd in history (to have landed the operating system deal with IBM), not the smartest.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I'd rather have Bill Gates intelligence, etc than Steve Jobs showmanship and.. I don't know, what else can he do ?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3
he just seems like the luckiest nerd in history (to have landed the operating system deal with IBM)
That wasn't luck, that was his parents. Google it. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I think you're thinking of a different Melinda Gates. She was the manager for Microsoft projects like Encarta, and Bob. It's not like she's unattractive, but to call her the hottest woman to appear on TV news just doesn't make any sense. It's not like Bill married some super-model. He married another nerd, just a slightly more attractive, female one.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3^ agreed about that.. Here's a pic of Bill and Melinda Gates: http://liens-utiles.org/~jerry/fondationgates.jpg
- wageslave1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2bullshiat. were you watching the same interview as I was? He was cracking jokes -- that the audience laughted at. traded barbs with stewart. he was animated, clear and articulate.
Remove your hate blinders and watch that video again.
He did a great job.
- Holyfool19, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60THAT! Ladies and gentlemen, is a real nerd.
The nervous laughter, the silly jokes, the cracking voice.
See "Revenge of the Nerds" and you will sympathize with this wonderful man.- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1>See "Revenge of the Nerds" and you will sympathize with this wonderful man
Uh, Bob X Cringely isn't exactly Gates' biggest fan. His documentary makes Gates out to be a bit of a megalomaniac. - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@SEMW
Never heard of the movie Revenge of the Nerds? Sounds like you are thinking of the documentary film Triumph of the Nerds that Cringely put together.
Hmm, not know about Revenge of the Nerds, but knowing about Cringely's documentary; now that's nerdy! - wolphkaat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Booger or Gilbert?

- Willis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53Heh, Gates is a real geek, Jobs is a marketing guy. This interview really makes you remember that fact. NEVER put the geeks in front of the camera. :)
- harvinator24, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Jon Stewart has a mac, maybe thats why he doesn't know much about windows purse.
- xdviper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3lol da man baby
but i'll still stick to xp and os x! - KingLeo, on 10/12/2007, -36/+11Steve Jobs can handle interviews a heck of a lot better than that. Go ahead, digg me down, but you know I'm right.
- PostalBean, on 10/12/2007, -16/+61Bill Gates can handle a business a lot better than Steve Jobs.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -22/+8"Bill Gates can handle a business a lot better than Steve Jobs."
yeah while shafting consumers. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9In 1980, Apple was holding all the cards. Steve just didn't know how to run a company, and let Microsoft slip past Apple. That's why he got fired and replaced by that dude who sold a lot of sugary water, but knew big business. Unfortunately, Sculley didn't do a particularly great job either.
From a business perspective, Microsoft was a far, far better company. Say whatever you want about Gates and Ballmer, they know how to run a company, own a market, and make tons of money..
- jakatak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Bill Gates on The Daily Show was not a good fit. Bill is trying to talk about technology and Jon is talking about porn. Bill should do that type of stuff on Dateline or 20/20 and stay away from comedy shows.
By the way, Bill did seem nicer than I thought, but what a geek!- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4
Bill should do that type of stuff on Dateline or 20/20 and stay away from comedy shows.
No, then they'd ask him real questions. - freff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I thought it was a decent interview. It was meant to show a "softer" and more human side of Gates, and although it's questionable if Gates came out of it the way most non-nerdy guests do, it definitely showed a more human side of Gates. And by association, the Vista OS. The vast majority of the people watching probably don't follow Gates' career, or Jobs' life like some here on digg, but most of the people watching are probably smart and somewhat techsavy people. And I'll guess that most of them have heard negative things about Vista. So Gates just went out there to try to talk to these guys. I don't know how many copies of Vista he sold last night, but I'll guess that the interview did what he hoped it would do. Give a human face to Microsoft's corporate image.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4
Bill should do that type of stuff on Dateline or 20/20 and stay away from comedy shows.
- himpster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Seems like Gates was a bit aloof. Not sure if it was fatigue, or if it was simply the difference between his and Stewart's personality types... regardless, that was probably 15 of the most awkward minutes I've seen on TV in a while.
- Pxtl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well said. Gates was obviously nervous because he was a nerd going on a comedy show, and Jon was obviously prompted to handle him with kid gloves since obviously Gates paid big money to be there - so neither of them could relax.
I wonder what was going through their heads?
Jon: "I once gave a guy who looked a lot like you a swirly."
Gates: "I have enough money to have your entire family killed and get away with it".
Well, not really, but that's about how comfy they seemed around each other.
- Pxtl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well said. Gates was obviously nervous because he was a nerd going on a comedy show, and Jon was obviously prompted to handle him with kid gloves since obviously Gates paid big money to be there - so neither of them could relax.
- mwilke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15It was funny, I thought gates did a fine job. It would be cool to see what he envisions the future of T.V. come to life.
- KingLeo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I agree, and at the rate technology is moving I'm sure we'll see a lot of those things a reality in the near future (2-5 years).
- devildr1ver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11its a shame the pc guy from those mac commercials didn't come out tonight on the daily show that was the freaking reason i watched it......oh well

- butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Watching this a few times Bill Gates manages l to avoid the usual traps of geekdom staying away from three letter acronyms and being overtly technical. Jon Stewart however did not appear much interested in this interview ,as his engagement with Bill Gates seemed quite distant and the questions were almost superficial in nature. The whole conversation felt toned down and restrained from controversial or personal. I felt that I had sat through a 9 minute informercial. I have being casting about for a description other than that but the feeling remains that they came back from the adverts and then gave us another 9 minute advert. Whilst there is nothing wrong, or can be done to stop this from occurring, I feel that I would have had more respect for the Bill Gates if the interview had been genuinely engaging on a personal level.
- mikesly, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Dugg cause Gates is a decent guy. Regardless of what was done in the past he is making up for it 10 fold.
- VermiciousKnid, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4"I've ***** over a lot of small businesses and my own customers so I could line my pockets with gold, but I'm making up for it now by acting sheepish and insecure and allowing my wife to give away some of my ill gotten money"
- fiver22, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9A much as I sympathize with the whole 'anti-Windows' club here on Digg (and on the net in general) I have to say that Bill Gates as a person strikes me as a geek -much like the rest of us. He came off well in this interview. --Even so: I won't be one of those shills who runs out to buy Vista. I doubt I'll ever put Vista on one of my machines. To quote (no -paraphrase) myself, and many others: Vista's DRM is more than a little worrying -in my experience it's freakin' terrifying.
- calvinosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I've been using a mac for the past 4 years and I plan on abandoning it for a slackware laptop soon. I don't want to have anything to do with vista ever.
BUT,

- ch28kid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I actually like Bill Gates not because of Windows / Microsoft, but his contributions through their charity.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation can actually help improve enhance healthcare, reduce extreme poverty and possibly cure cancer or aids. - AHemp, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2I'm mad at The Daily Show... My girlfriend and I were yelling at the TV because it was such a useless segment.
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14If that was the worst part of your day, consider yourselves lucky.
- o2pb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6In all fairness to Bill, those questions were very stupid. Jon Stuart has his moments, but that interview was just plain lame.
- Nevrast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0When you are trying to insult someone, make sure you get their name right. It's Jon Stewart, not John Stewart, Jon Stuart, John Stuart, Jon Steward, etc
- fahadmp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That was pretty good! Bill Gates seems like a cool guy
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Damn he's a freak of nature. I feel sorry for him.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43I ROFLed when John asked, "Is your screen saver the flying toasters," because I could see Bill die a little inside.
For those who don't know, the flying toasters was one of the original screensavers for the early Macs.- plagiats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yep, and "flying toasters" is nowadays a free OpenGL screensaver that comes bundled with all major Linux distributions.
- matthistory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wonder what questions were limited, it seemed like it was one of the weaker interviews I've seen Jon Stewart do. Sure Bill Gates seemed nervous, but it still came off as a restrained interview.
- nakani, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I'm suprised John Stewart didn't ask Gates about how Microsoft will deal with Apple, OS X, and iPod.
Wonder if MS payed off Comedy Central to go easy on Gates as part of their PR campaign budget...
Not saying they did, but I wouldn't put it past them given their recent Wikipedia edit incident.- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3
Wonder if MS payed off Comedy Central to go easy on Gates
You think so?
\ sarcasm
Why do you think there was a giant Vista display shown in the background the whole time? I like Stewart and all, but don't kid yourself, he's at the mercy of Comedy Central (who is that, Viacom?) and the $$$. - tonyr1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@OBKenobi: "Why do you think there was a giant Vista display shown in the background the whole time? Because they do that for every single interviewee on the show? If they wrote a book, the book is in the background. If they're in a movie, the movie logo is in the background. Why shouldn't they have put a Vista display in the background, considering it's no different than any of the other guests.
Not that money didn't play any part in the interview, but don't make the backdrop seem like anything special. - matthistory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't kid yourself money is involved in EVERY interview. Not to mention reviews and many other aspects of things you use for decisions. Most things like CD reviews are paid for, not necessarily to get a good review, but they are paid for to make sure they make it in the magazine and are reviewed by a favorable person.

- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Bill is getting way better with interviews like this. I remember seeing him on Leno and other shows years back. He's not quite as nervous.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5but JUST nervous enough to make us all uncomfortable.
I love it! :D

- conto1987, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I love how there are 500 views on the youtube video and there are 700 diggs. weird
- neillt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Could be people like me that watched it on the actual TV. Odd, I know, but it does happen.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think a lot of people digg videos to watch them later, when they're not at work.
- e3boy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Gates: "Hey, Steve who's cool and hip these days?"
Ballmer: "I hear my daughter talking about some Jon Stewart guy."
Gates: "Hey let's buy some time on his show, so we could look " with-it " to all the cool kids."
Ballmer: "AWESOME idea Bill! ...It will work just like the Zune did with those two..... what are those two........mmmmm........ oh ya! Kevin and Alex."- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you forgot Ballmer's trademark chair-throwing and developer-chanting.
- motalex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I thought this was going to be better than it was.
- Kev13Dd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I liked the end
The Daily Show: Now available on iTunes - gazman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Despite all the anti-ms material on the internet making bill gates out to be some kind of monster he seems like a really nice guy. I think he explained most of the computer information well to a non-computer person.
- plagiats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3say, that's his work now (giving interviews to non-techies). still he came out quite well on the jokes ("call me!").
