Chyrp: A brand new lightweight blogging engine
chyrp.net — Chyrp is a blogging engine designed to be very lightweight while retaining functionality. It is driven by PHP and MySQL (with some AJAX thrown in), and has a pimpin' theme and module engine, so you can personalize it however you want.
- 658 diggs
- digg it
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -3/+22Some of you may remember "Lingua," from a previous digg submission. This engine is the latter form of that, completely recoded from scratch and designed from a whole new perspective.
- arktos, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3I've been following you on twitter. I like how everything is shaping up. congrats.
- ruddy, on 01/04/2008, -2/+3how is this a latter form completely recoded? isn't that an oxymoron? and whats with "engine", wouldn't it just be a cms?
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -2/+6Lingua was renamed to Chyrp due to trademark stuffs, if it weren't for that it'd still be called Lingua. Other than that there really isn't much of a similarity at all I guess, so you're right.
I would hardly call this a cms since it only focuses on one thing; in my opinion a cms is usually forums, a news system, all that crazy stuff. This just focuses on blogging.- alecwh, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6A CMS is a "content management system". If it manages content (it does), it's a CMS. Oh, and it looks great.
- ruddy, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3thats cool. i'm checking out some of the source on your google page. looks pretty good, did you write it all yourself? also, is there a reason you don't use the asp style php tag? just something that stuck out
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Yeah, it's all coded by me. It's a little brainchild of mine I've been working on for a long time.
I don't use the ASP-style tags since many server configurations don't allow them, so I've had to use the long form.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Yeah, it's all coded by me. It's a little brainchild of mine I've been working on for a long time.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -2/+6Lingua was renamed to Chyrp due to trademark stuffs, if it weren't for that it'd still be called Lingua. Other than that there really isn't much of a similarity at all I guess, so you're right.
- YourTechSupport, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2It looks sweet. I'll give it a shot in a few.
- abandonedhero, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Great, I ran Lingua for a short period of time, and I'm playing with Chyrp now. I've found one issue so far, and submitted it. Good luck!
- cameronio, on 01/04/2008, -1/+11Great work Alex. Simple, easy to use, effective.
- jklikesnews, on 01/04/2008, -1/+8Definitely going to use this, it's exactly what I've been looking for.
- robbh66, on 01/04/2008, -22/+3too bad nobody cares what you have to say :/
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -3/+10If that's the case, your comment's even worse.
- robbh66, on 01/04/2008, -15/+3So is your need to constantly comment in your own submission.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -2/+11So is your apparent need to be a douche to everyone. I would've commented had this been any other submission because, well, I guess I'm just not a big fan of douches. (Is that really all you have against me though? I comment on my own submissions? Please, I think I can hear the sky falling.)
- posneg, on 01/04/2008, -2/+2Don't worry robbh66, *I* thought it was funny. Some people take themselves too seriously don't you think?
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -3/+10If that's the case, your comment's even worse.
- Hobbes24, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6now the only excuse i can use not to write a blog is my crippling lack of talent.
- ThirdPrize, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8Like that ever stopped anyone.
- robbh66, on 01/04/2008, -22/+3too bad nobody cares what you have to say :/
- AttackingHobo, on 01/04/2008, -5/+45DO A BARREL ROLL
PRESS Z OR R TWICE TO DO A BARREL ROLL- FatPhizzle, on 01/04/2008, -0/+12am i missing something?
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+11I'm not sure. I dugg him up and pinned his post for the cause though.
- Gzero, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Look at the demo page.
- Atomic1fire, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Star fox?
- fwc67, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8That only works in Firefox
- FatPhizzle, on 01/04/2008, -0/+12am i missing something?
- drworthless, on 01/04/2008, -4/+6I like it, played with the admin area for a little bit.
Hopefully some blogs that make it onto digg can start using it so their servers won't crash ;)- iofthestorm, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Nah, they'll still be hosted on crappy shared webhosts so it won't make a difference what blogging software they are using.
- DeathJux, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1Looks good. My only blogging CMS to reference is TextPattern, anyone with experience care to compare the two to some small degree?
- Gzero, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1From looking at the demo page:
Chryp seems have a somewhat different approach. Each "Feather" allows you to post a different type of post, which is kind of neat but limiting in some ways.
In regards to customizing things, it seems more limited than TxP since you can't edit themes, feathers, etc. from within the admin but maybe you can do it from outside somehow.
The themes/feathers/modules system seems pretty well thought out though, and it was really nice to use. There's even a Textile module so you can still use that :P.
Personally, I think I will test this for a while and see if I want to switch over from TextPattern.- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3I didn't bother coding an editor into the admin panel since it's just much nicer to edit with a text editor. Inline editors always made me all emo. :/
- Gzero, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1From looking at the demo page:
- Kuestionmark, on 01/04/2008, -3/+4Great, now more ***** with opinions can tell me that I'm wrong about stuff.
- drworthless, on 01/04/2008, -2/+4In my opinion you are right
- Microdot, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2but you are wrong.
- drworthless, on 01/04/2008, -2/+4In my opinion you are right
- thailand1972, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6does it cache?
- ruddy, on 01/04/2008, -8/+4seeing as how most bloggers don't have root to their servers, installing a php caching system probably won't be possible.
- thailand1972, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3You don't need access to the server (as TenebrousX points out below); the PHP can create the cache (static HTML files) so the actual site admin doesn't need to do a single thing.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3ruddy is right, but I'm planning on making a caching module. Most of the hosts I've been on have let me do all kinds of stuff, and either way, it should be fixable just with a bit of CHMODding.
- TenebrousX, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7you don't need server access to cache a page; just run the script once and store the output in a static file
- ruddy, on 01/04/2008, -8/+4seeing as how most bloggers don't have root to their servers, installing a php caching system probably won't be possible.
- AmazingAndrex, on 01/04/2008, -9/+4Not valid, no dice. =/
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fchy ...- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4It's valid, that's just the search form so it shows a bit "smarter" in Safari. Either way, that's 100% the theme, nothing to do with Chyrp itself.
- Karmavs, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3do you even READ the validator errors. It IS valid XHTML Trans, aside from one thing - the search box. it uses the invalid 'search' type (introduced into webKit by Apple) and all the other values it entails - but it falls back flawlessly on any browser that doesn't support it - as the default type for inputs is 'text' (which is what the input would have been anyway)
There is a reason for standards. This isn't it. - Gzero, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2It's a legitimate concern. I didn't know anything about apple search types either.
- tdous, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2***** Microsoft, ignoring standards and introducing proprietary types.. oh wait.
- ghinch, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Admittedly I'm an Apple Fanboy and also a web developer, and I have to say the difference between Apple introducing the search type vs. MS proprietary code is that Apple isn't breaking anything if you don't support it, unlike MS that makes you fork your code to make things work everywhere. I'm more pissed at Apple for making textareas resizable in Safari 3. Breaking layouts left and right
- DrinkPaint, on 01/04/2008, -10/+3Wordpress + Super Cache = WIN
Everything else = LOSE - juandelreal, on 01/04/2008, -7/+4I tried the demo and I think its been hacked. When I try to post a new page I get redirected to another website.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -2/+3Fixed.
- dfunct, on 01/04/2008, -8/+2I like what I'm seeing but my current host doesn't allow for MySQL databases, are there any plans to make this work with flat files? if not can anyone suggest a replacement for CuteNews?
- Louis11, on 01/04/2008, -1/+10Uhm . . . shell out $5/month for a cheap server that offers MySQL =/
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2It's planned, yes, as a module. I've already looked into implementation and what backend it'll use, hopefully it won't be that far off but I've got a lot of stuff to do beforehand.
- dfunct, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1That's totally awesome thank you! I'm just looking forward to the day when I can finally get rid of CuteNews
- jcaino, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1you could try bloxsom..not a flat file - but the blog is built from text files
there's additional modules and what not available too. also can make it work with your current CSS scheme easily - arkmtech, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2What in God's name sort of host doesn't allow MySQL databases?
... oh, wait, I forgot about these talentless hacks: http://www.townnews.com - jaredseth, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1dfunct, it's been a while since I used it but Pivot doesn't use a database.
http://www.pivotlog.net/
- fLUx1337, on 01/04/2008, -8/+3I'm going to move my blog from the wordpress system to a custom built blogging platform for my needs, or something like this.
I'll tell ya, as a developer, I have developed a lot of web apps which have a lot more features (and so, queries) than I can imagine a blog software needs, but every page on Dreamhost loads within 1-2 secs. A slightly custom modded Wordpress installation takes the best part of 10 secs. (!!)
Wordpress is highly bloated, and IMO, unless you have a decent server to run it, don't even touch it, design your own or use something like this....- fugazied, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1You just have a terrible host. Setup wordpress properly, add some caching and you can serve a lot of requests. Dreamhost, get real.
- Gigaman2003, on 01/04/2008, -0/+0wordpress IS bloated. just because the frontend is minimal dosn't mean the backend is too. it takes much longer than it should to do anything.
- crackah, on 01/04/2008, -13/+2http://chyrp.net/demo/
Guys! they support Obama! you so cant digg it!- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Just because Hilary has a snuke in her snizz doesn't mean they support Obama..
- arjung, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8What does Chyrp do that other blogging engines can't or don't?
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+9It's all explained on the page it links to. (I don't mean that to be snide or anything, I'm just assuming that's a genuine question. :)
- TomPlansMedia, on 01/04/2008, -9/+1so its like tumblr but a little uglier and with comments
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8The thing about people like you that makes me laugh is that there's always 0% investigation before you make rude comments like that. I'm not going to do your work for you. Look around, read a bit, and hopefully in a couple years you'll be a little brighter.
- YourTechSupport, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Well. Ugly can usually be fixed. But... hey, lightweight tumblr style.. I'm in!
- failsafex, on 01/04/2008, -3/+3already vulnerable to XSS...nice
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2See my reply below.
- Killeroid, on 01/04/2008, -4/+3Someone already exploited an xss vunerability in the engine. Lets see how fast this is fixed.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3It's not an exploit, all they did was post some HTML in the post. If you want to hack yourself or your users, I can't stop you, but that's nothing to do with the system it's done on. It's the same with WordPress or any other site.
- Karmavs, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Absolutely everyone is an administrator - OF COURSE ITS INSECURE
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4That too. I've been stressed like hell fixing things you guys are breaking. D:
A lot of the people here are major douches but eh, I guess I do it for the other croud. :P- DesignerDave, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Appreciate it mate ;)
I very much like what I saw in the demo. Already have downloaded it, and will be using it instead of wordpress for one of my personal/company blogs. - jcaino, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2im disappointed to see that the demo is broken. but definitely very cool how you're keeping up with this. digg as a debugging tool? lol.
guess i'm going to have to install this on one of my domains and check it out. - jcaino, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2if you're stil checking up on this - to get it working 'out-of-the-box' i did have to implemt a php wrapper due to permission problems. while this is available with most hosts, it does normally have a performance impact that comes with it.
edit: the permissions problems im referring to is not with the config or database file.., but line 77 (and many after) in common.php
- DesignerDave, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Appreciate it mate ;)
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4That too. I've been stressed like hell fixing things you guys are breaking. D:
- Karmavs, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3of course it's insecure in the demo - EVERYONE IS AN ADMIN. I seriously doubt it's that bad in normal use
- audiooeric, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1I'm interested in something more refined than Wordpress; so I installed this and it's definitely MUCH quicker.. Easy to set up; it took about 20 seconds total and that was with creating the tables! Very cool.. I'd like to check out typo as well and see how that works... http://typosphere.org/
current wordpress: http://www.reverserevere.com- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1Buy me a coffee... lol
Pay my electricity bill.- audiooeric, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2you know, I made like $0.52 with Google Ad's but in the few days since I have put that link up, I've gotten 2 coffees.. I'll take it.. I was tired of seeing these crazy google ads that were kind of crappy sites getting clicks that I had no control over. So, you can laugh, but I'm getting people to buy me coffee!
- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1More power to you! Seriously.. see if anyone will pay your electricity bill.
- audiooeric, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2you know, I made like $0.52 with Google Ad's but in the few days since I have put that link up, I've gotten 2 coffees.. I'll take it.. - Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1Buy me a coffee... lol
- bowe, on 01/04/2008, -2/+4quick everyone mass-post lolcats!
- Karmavs, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3you should probably make the demo a little less wide-open if you can. (though it is fun to watch)
- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2While it lasted :)
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -2/+3Closed it down, haha. Too much work. Congrats digg users, you win, I guess?
- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Really....
I can inject malicious HTML/scripts... Im cool!!! - Karmavs, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Guess so…
wouldn't it be possible to block all tags except, say, strong, em, and u for posts and comments, and block the video post type? You'll still get the stupid posts, but nothing like the crazyness of the 'redesign' that came up before you pulled the site down. (and no spam links either)- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Done, back up. We'll see how long this lasts...
- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Really....
- stevekeller, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Well I am glad that I had the chance to demo it before digg users abused the opportunity. Nice work, I am going to try it on my own server.
- Lazaryn, on 01/04/2008, -6/+2Buried for diggvertisment. Hey asuraci by the way...
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+7Right, because I'm just *swimming* in cash from all this this. Having a bunch of idiots take advantage of the demo for *free* software is such a financial gain for me. Hell, I'd bury it myself if I could!
- Lazaryn, on 01/04/2008, -5/+1I buried only because you submitted your own project, if someone else had submitted it (And you didn't tell them to) I would have dugg. However you are not the first to do it and I have dugg several diggvertisments in the past as they were nice products, meh.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -3/+1By the way; what ever happened to Nyxsis?
- Lazaryn, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1Bryan ran away with the server after disappearing for a few months.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+7Right, because I'm just *swimming* in cash from all this this. Having a bunch of idiots take advantage of the demo for *free* software is such a financial gain for me. Hell, I'd bury it myself if I could!
- Crucifix, on 01/04/2008, -6/+5Buried because the demo is offline.
- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Eh no... I believe he took it down because people were posting porn, XSS and other *****..
Glad I got to demo it though.. I have it running locally now, good stuff. - asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1If it's online it just gets taken advantage of. Once the diggage slows down it'll be back up.
- aussieNickuss, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2That's rude. Bury it just because you can't get your greasy hands on it. Download it and try it locally, it's only a few KB, ya slackass.
- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Eh no... I believe he took it down because people were posting porn, XSS and other *****..
- alecwh, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1What icons are being used by the website and cms?
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1They're all Silk, via http://famfamfam.com/
- alecwh, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Then it seems that you are in direct violation of the Creative Commons license.
The CMS does include an icon (only one, from my observation, but I didn't spend much time looking) from the set, and it states specifically that they require a link back to the website. I'm sure you just overlooked it, but please get this settled asap.- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3You're right, I'll see what I can do.
- alecwh, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Then it seems that you are in direct violation of the Creative Commons license.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1They're all Silk, via http://famfamfam.com/
- thailand1972, on 01/04/2008, -4/+5@asuraci: nice try but come on - is Digg your testing platform? It seems people are finding bugs here left right and centre. There are thousands of blogging apps out there, probably tens of thousands of "rolled-your-own" ones too. I write my own. I'm not knocking your actual app, just the way you're using Digg as promotion AND that it's still buggy too. Plus your hosting can't handle Digg.
Sorry for the negativity, but what would Digg be like if all web app developers started spamming here?- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -4/+1Yo thai... If you just watch the video of all the bug fixes and enhancements I doubt you would be so negative about it..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU- thailand1972, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1So was that video made like 1 minute ago? Because I'm talking about bugs and security vulnerabilities found in this thread by Diggers.
- darkphan, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3I don't see anything wrong with this submission. Chyrp looks very nice (I have it installed locally to mess with).
What about all the damn Ron Paul spam that we have had to endure for months on end?- thailand1972, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1I agree about Ron Paul - I'm just saying all spam is bad - plus the web app is hardly ready for submission here even if spamming was acceptable.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Of course it's going to be buggy, not a single software release is perfect at the first shot.
My site's working just fine for me and for everyone else it seems. - asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Thanks for cutting me off, digg.
As I was saying. It wasn't my intention to use digg as my minefield minions; but even if it was, I don't see any problem with that. Now instead of just me and a couple other people testing there are many more bug reports coming in. Most of the bugs reported have subsequently been fixed and put into the next release; what's wrong with that?- thailand1972, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1OK so you are saying you've used Digg as your testing ground. Fair enough - at least you're up front about it.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1If that's all you're willing to read into it, sure.
- aussieNickuss, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4I applaud you to have the initiative to post to digg for promotion and testing. Digg is the best load handling testing platform out there IMHO.
- thailand1972, on 01/04/2008, -2/+1OK so you are saying you've used Digg as your testing ground. Fair enough - at least you're up front about it.
- Orb9, on 01/04/2008, -4/+1Yo thai... If you just watch the video of all the bug fixes and enhancements I doubt you would be so negative about it..
- Mardala, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Well regardless about the spam factor, if you want some constructive criticism. You use classes, but you treat them like procedural functions. Don't use global. maybe spend some more time with php5 classes. There is too much embedded nonsense. But its good to build complete apps. I wouldn't call it a 1.0 release by any means. its not ready for production as you have noticed.
- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Using PHP5 code locks out a huge amount of people. I use classes because it's great for organizing and keeping things together. I'd rather have the functions split up and organized than sprawled left and right.
- YourTechSupport, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Okay.... Post-install thoughts..
I Like...
- the simple install
- the pick-your-own feathers bit
- inline editing
- the fast response time
I didn't like...
- My hyperfocus disorder'd ass didnt' see any specific notices about poeple needing to go install feathers seperately.
glitches...
- posting video w/out commentart text = blank post w/ no embed code.
- I couldn't find that 'anal massage' module on your site. Thankfully I have Reddit for that.
I'd like to see...
- Feather to post twits to twitter w/ links to it in the resulting chryp post
- Stats tracking module
- Integrated ReCaptcha for comments- YourTechSupport, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2And.... ability to LINK mp3s or have them pull from websites to local site storage instead of having to reupload it.
- gekkoeye, on 01/04/2008, -2/+2Great! All I get is ...
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ';', expecting ')' in /mnt/gs01/herd03/32776/domains/chyrp.net/html/demo/themes/default/content/posts/quote.php on line 5- asuraci, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Fixed, that was me being stupid when I disabled HTML in the quote feather.
- pavelpg, on 01/04/2008, -3/+2boring... and error as soon as I click the "try it out" link... -_-
- Phlosten, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Very cool. Exactly what I have been thinking about needing today. I have only very simple blog requirements and this looks like it would be very easy to integrate with an existing website.
- bradp, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Well we know that it won't survive the Digg effect, but that's like kicking a toddler down the stairs and saying see I told you what would happen... Especially if you allow every user to admin the site... It looks like they've shut / locked down the demo, not much to see there, but the extending is what has me looking at this thing.. I think that it's an out of the box (post install) the system that is simple enough, but time will tell the power of this engine. I'm going to install in a sand pit, and have some fun...
- ploneglenn, on 01/04/2008, -2/+0For another lightweight blogging engine, try http://web2newsportal.sourceforge.net
