Flock social web browser adds Digg, Pownce, and AOL Mail
downloadsquad.com — Flock, the social web browser built from Firefox code keeps getting more social. Flock 1.2 beta adds Digg, Pownce, and AOL Mail integration. Once you login to Digg for the first time from the Flock browser, you'll have the option of opening up a Digg sidebar which shows you all of your Digg contacts and their recent activity.

- rlray216, on 05/14/2008, -17/+8I'll use this!
- madeingermany, on 05/14/2008, -3/+10I won't - I tried it out a few months back and it kept crashing and ate a tone of memory. It gave me nothing that I can't easily add to Firefox with an extension.
I'll check it out again, once it is based on FF3.- Markpdotcom, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1"...tonne of memory..."
- synystar, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Testing it now and I have to say it's much better than I expected from previous experiences. Love the new features especially the addition of DIgg.

- bjornski, on 05/14/2008, -2/+6Playing with it now, and it looks really cool. I don't know some of it's real strengths yet, but I'll certainly play with it for a while. I didn't see anything about an ad-blocker, but I run Ad Muncher anyway, I don't care.
Very cool, I'll play with this for quite a while. - bjornski, on 05/14/2008, -3/+4WHOA. Wait!
No Digg-ratings extender. Believe it or not, but that's a make-or-break deal for me. (and open comments fully expanded).
If I can work those into this browser, I'll use it. But without those, nope.- EvanHamilton, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Hey bjornski, what do you mean by Digg-ratings extender? We can look into adding that functionality...

Digg is understandable and perfect but Pownce and AOL Maill are a bit out of left field.- rasterbator, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5The Flock hate must stem from PC users having to deal with Internet Explorer 7. - requiem4dissent, on 05/15/2008, -6/+2Dug down. There's a reason the web works, and site-specific clients aren't it.
- Gradies, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1The web works because the client and web developers both push the capabilities of processing, storage, and bandwidth. Rendering web pages and corking security holes in an open source platform is what Firefox does best. Its up to companies like Flock to use that platform to advance the possibilities of the client for the web developers to use. Flock's RSS reader is constantly able to display more RSS feeds as developers adopt the standard. Does that make it site-specific? No. Neither does Flock's previously existing people sidebar and mediabar now displaying my friend's Digg activity and allowing me to browse Digg stories. Flock is adding capabilities to the client, and thats something I want to support because its about time.
- MarkusGarvey, on 05/15/2008, -3/+1adblock doesn't seem to work in it....i will use it if it has adblock..

- say592, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7Ive been using Flock since about version 0.6.
I love it, and I have only loved it more as they have added more services. I have had some unique issues with the browser, and have gotten to work alot with with Ethan, Mike, and the rest of the gang, and have mentioned several times that they need to get Digg and Pownce in there.
Im sure I wasnt the only one, but Im so glad they finally did!- rasterbator, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Ditto. And I created the Flock buttons, which were originally credited to someone else. Evan and his team worked with me to figure it all out. Flock is doing everything right with their browser. And honestly, what other browser developer would get on Digg and respond to the comments on Digg? That is why I am a loyal Flock user. Great job, Evan.
- webaddict, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2It's about time they added Digg! I like Flock but don't use it as my full-time browser. The winner is still Firefox for all the plug-ins etc.

no Opensocial yet???- littlematt, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0Flock's My World page was architected to support widgets such as OpenSocial widgets in a future release.
That said, much of OpenSocial's functionality is designed for website-to-website communication, where you want your Twitter status posted on Pownce, or your Digg habits posted in your Facebook Mini-Feed.
Flock will take advantage of sites that expose their data via OpenSocial calls when sites do so, but much of OpenSocial involves getting around cross-domain restrictions and other issues Flock, acting as the user itself, just doesn't have.
Flock continues to support services with solid APIs such as Digg and Pownce. In fact in the process of adding Pownce support we worked with them to help make their API more robust. Sites without solid APIs (such as MySpace's nascent but developing API) are very difficult to integrate in a fashion that isn't broken more than it's working. We do work with the various social networks to help them develop their APIs where we see ways we can help. We (Evan) also maintains lists of various service requests. When a site is requested by many users, has a solid API, and fits well into the interfaces in Flock, we can then attempt an integration.
So I guess my point is that "OpenSocial" is not some magic pixie dust that you can sprinkle on Flock and make wonderful things happen. It's a great step forward in standardizing API calls across services, preventing us from having to reinvent the wheel all the time, but it isn't implemented by nearly as many services as have claimed to support it, and it isn't truly built for the kind of fat client -> web service integration Flock has.
- littlematt, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0Flock's My World page was architected to support widgets such as OpenSocial widgets in a future release.
- int19h, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1The problem with Flock is that they bind themselves to certain specific websites, without allowing people to make website-integration-plugins easily themselves. (Yes, it's open source, but still). And, the commercial connection to Yahoo really shines through, in a bad way. Try for instance changing the search engine to another choice, sooner or later you'll still end up at Yahoo Search...
- froek, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Flock has the same extension mechanism that Firefox has. There are no "bindings" that lock you in to certain sites. If you have a particular site that you want to integrate with, there are lots of ways of getting that site into the Flock browser, integrated with the Mediabar, People Sidebar, etc. The interfaces for extending Flock in the social respect are there.

- littlematt, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Buried as inaccurate:
1. Industrious developers can write extensions for Flock (in the same fashion and syntax as Firefox extensions) to add support for whatever service they want. Flock's code review process also provides an avenue to including those new service integrations in the shipping product, if that's what the original author wants. Interfaces are available at doxygen.flock.com and developer help is available in channel #flock-dev on irc.flock.com.
1.5. If you're not a coder-type but really want an integration with a particular service, after you send your requests to evan @ flock . com you may also want to poke that service. If they want to write a service integration for Flock, Flock devs would be happy to help and provide information.
2. If you switch your search engine from Yahoo to any of the others, Flock respects that preference. I switch mine to Google as one of the first things I do, and it sticks. There's two places to make the switch: one in Preferences > Searching, and one in My World, but those choices stick. If they truly don't, it's a bug, and one we would seriously want to fix. There's nothing nefarious or shady going on here. I prefer Google over Yahoo too, even though it's the $ from the Yahoo deal that pays my paycheck.
Disclaimer: I work for Flock.- int19h, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I could still guess that you got money from Yahoo only by trying Flock. That shows that the commercial connection shines through too much.
