Global net censorship 'growing'
news.bbc.co.uk — The level of state-led censorship of the net is growing around the world, a study of so-called internet filtering by the Open Net Initiative suggests.

- CuriousCraig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Quick... how many countries have digg bans?
- onionizer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17The survey found evidence of filtering in the following countries:
Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Burma/Myanmar, China, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, UAE, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.
Al countries famous for their liberal viewpoints..- reb42, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Fascist, not leftist.
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Socialist is the correct term.
- Speed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7The correct term is communist, which is not even close to the true ideals of communism, and nothing like socialism at all.
- jav1231, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Matters not. Socialism is no better in the long run than communism.
- M4tt3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4@onionizer,
Liberal, Conservative. Blah, blah, blah. People use those terms for what ever suits their argument.
"Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism
Explain to me how that's liberal? I mean, liberal-ism 'emphasizes individual rights'.
How is banning/censoring something 'emphasizing individual rights'? - kurtu5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@M4tt3r
I am a paleoliberal, aka libertarian. The modern liberal is not the same. This is why it can get confusing.
Names get reused in different ways over the years. What was it, Tories became Democrats and Whigs became Republicans? Then Republicans became Democrats. Republicans, as we know it, didn't come from Democrats. I think this is how it went, but I don't really care.
All I know is, it is general chicanery, used by my favorite creature to distrust, the politician, to rally groups of voters to put themselves in power.
The thing I do care bout it the idea of freedom. Whatever names the pretend defenders of it use, are simply trivia.
- merdiesel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Is it growing or has it always been this bad and we are just now catching it more?..
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I'd say it's far less now simply because it's harder to do. The net effect of the addition of Internet access has obviously been an increase in communications. Otherwise they'd have nothing to filter in the first place.

- bsiviglia9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5What would AT&T or Rupert Murdoch censor if they somehow managed to gain ownership and control over most websites?
- M4tt3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If someone answers correctly do they win a cookie?

- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I would think China would be at the top. Socialism, surveillance, and censorship have historically always gone together.
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Hitting the dig down button instead of defending socialism? Proof that censorship is truly built into the socialist psyche.
- Speed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4China is not socialist. China is communist. Even then, it's not true communist. It's a totalitarian regime, it is closer to Hitler's Nazi Germany than to anything a true communist or socialist believes in. Socialism is a country like Sweden or to a lesser extent, Canada. Socialism is gov't owned ESSENTIAL services like health care, or education. No where in the communist or socialist doctrines (especially since socialism has no set doctrine) is censorship mentioned.
True communism is basically an anarchy where everyone works together. - bsiviglia9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Error601 wrote: "Socialism, surveillance, and censorship have historically always gone together."
Would you then argue that the U.S. does not engage then in surveillance, and censorship -- or would you argue that the U.S. government is socialist?
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0The biggest surveillance organizations in the US are the socialist ones. Namely the IRS and the Social Security Administration. These people have detail records on every single person in the country and will come after you with the police if necessary if they don't like what they see.. They know everywhere you've lived, everything about your family, how much money you make, and every investment you made.

- lordmetroid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They don't have Sweden as one of the countries that censors the internet. While I only noticed it when surfing around these porn sites with random links all over the web. I do stumble at times upon a warning that the police of Sweden have closed access from Sweden to this page.
- Azio, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1bury this
- futureisours, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Daily reading of the retarded, liberal, communist, revolutionary digg users makes me back any censorship action, even in the US. Now why would you need the Internet when you have state-backed TV like Fox News and other government media entities?
- Speed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Please tell me that you're being sarcastic. If not, the world is screwed because of people like you who would openly and willing accept any form of Big Brother.
- pivovy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Americans, please do something! I don't know what, but you just got to fix you country somehow!

http://digg.com/tech_news/Is_Digg_Using_Secret_Moderators_to_Censor_It_s_Users - Wannabenerd, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0This kind of blocking is easy to circumvent with a HTTPS tunnel, if the person being blocked has a friend in a "free country"
For example the BarracudaDrive tunnel is easy to setup and use. From the BarracudaDrive tunnel doco:
You may live in a country with limited freedom and access to the Internet. If you have a friend in the western world, you can have him host a BarracudaDrive server for you. You may then securely and anonymously access the Internet without limitations. Unlike the online proxies, it is virtually impossible for a country to set firewall rules to block out home users running BarracudaDrive on their broadband connection.
http://barracudaserver.com/products/BarracudaDrive/HttpsTunnel.html- acceleriter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Link is spam for a non-free, commercial product. Dugg down.
