Google Home page gets less personal
google.com — At around 11am BST, google home reverted back to an old state, leaving many bookmarks, RSS feeds, widgets for dust, hopefully this will be fixed without users having to update their pages manually.

- kazimir34, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2Give a chance to netvibes.com. It's really not bad at all.
- JonRohan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40Screenshot of this? It didn't happen to me.
- TomPlansMedia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23mine is fine...

and now it is like this:
http://james.nerdiphythesoul.com/badgoogle.png - Tr33fiddy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yep, this happened to me.
Page full of very important notes gone. Doesn't exactly fill me with confidence in keeping my data on server.
S'pose I'd better have another look at Netvibes. - raynar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2haha

- notjamt9000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@dadrew1 Well, I considered blanking out my email address, but I hoped I could trust the friendly Digg community, might get something interesting. Mwahahahahahaaaaa - ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They sent me an email yesterday stating that they were upgrading their servers. Maybe this has something to do with it.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Looks like it's been fixed.
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17@leonthepro
The internet forces us to search for pornography - DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i lost a lot as well (notes, todo stuff, etc) , and they have not fixed it, i sent google a few nasty emails about this, and this is the last time i start relying on internet resources like this, should have used a notepad instead
- el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@leonthepro
Yes. Basically Google realized that 98.45555% of people visiting Google were searching for porn, so they decided to make it easier for the masses. - carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@notjamt9000, my IG page kicks the crap outta yours in terms of pagerank, w00t. 9/10 here.
- macatak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah this is really annoying.
- rfcn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9happened to me as well....
but it seems we're not the only ones:

bigger problems at google? - SoloMalee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yup...me too! The version I see must be about 3 months old. All my Tabs have gone along with all the content I added to the one tab I have left.
Come on Google, don't mess up your updates like MS does! - bonstio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5+1
I registered the problem in the Gadgets API group here http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Gadgets-API/browse_thread/thread/28095a6222cbb231/943afe7d24d845fe#943afe7d24d845fe as it's a slightly busier group. It's been a couple of hours of downtime now too :-( - the6thReplicant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ditto - bookmarks have been left alone but all non-home tabs are missing
- bonstio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're fortunate... my weather gadgets is OK. Well it had two locations stored whereas now it has one but it least it's remembered one.
My bookmarks are nowhere to be seen.
- bonstio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're fortunate... my weather gadgets is OK. Well it had two locations stored whereas now it has one but it least it's remembered one.
- aflo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hope they fix this soon because a lot of information has been lost
- proxytoaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have a funny feeling that as more people show up for work this morning this story is going to get picked up a lot more. I like having all my "read the news at these places every day" in one place, and this kind of sucks today.
- ivassilis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It may be useful to suggest not to move or try to recreate your ig page 'cause it keeps resetting. Also, it may be more difficult for Google to decide which version to restore for you (if we have any hope of seeing our beloved multi-tab ig)... In any case, this is totally anti-professional on their part. They should have a backup settings feature working (not beta!) already...
- bonstio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's the fact that it keeps on resetting that makes me think that somehow it's a connectivity problem that's screwed all our user settings... and this makes me cling on to the hope that our data will be restored when the connectivity is. *HOPES*
- MrsHarris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mine is in the same state... thankfully at present the rest of my googles estate (Analytics, blog, mail, calendar, docs, etc) is still up and running. Lord knows what would happen if all that went!
Perhaps I should start looking into backing some of this stuff up (other than my Gmail which already gets downloaded into Thunderbird, and soon my calendar too hopefully). - JonRohan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0nice.
- ssttuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had it sorted just how I liked it, I have classic OCD when it comes to these things and if they've lost my setting then that's it i'l...i'l...have to do it all again!
- buffalodan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11mine is the same as it always was....
- alperea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6looks like google !=god after all
- StephenCIreland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6if it loses all my feeds im gonna shoot larry and make sergie eat a floppy disk
- WozzaShaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thought this was something I did, my whole "to do list" got wiped out. Done sweet FA for the rest of the day in protest.
- Shadow7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Everything's still perfectly fine with mine
- MattS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5no prob with mine either...
- jftitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1since this digg branch is saying it.
Nothing wrong with mine either. Same looking page too me. Seriously though, I never was into customizing my personal page too much. so sure the things that changed are geared towards those that had the personalized looking themes, and certain 'gadgets/widgets' on their homepage.
Sure nothing changed for me, because i keep to the basics. I have my Digg and Slashdot RSS, email, gcal, weather, and local moving listings. - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ditto, mine's fine. And I'm using the teahouse (or whatever) theme.
- MattS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5no prob with mine either...
- svinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some intern at Google who's never played their usual Thursdays Office-war probably managed to hit their 'personalisation-server' with a rubber duck or a blast from an airzooka. *sigh*...interns...
- Sultana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My homepage is still okay...*knocks on wood*
- ezalis, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Quit complaining. The service they provide you is free. If it breaks, who cares, you didn't pay for it.
- leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it was unreliable, I simply wouldn't use it.
Yes, they provide the service for free. Bank accounts are free, but if my bank screws me around, I change.
I lost all my pages (except for a few things and some stuff that I'd never installed.)
It seems everything except the modules initially offered when I signed up (BBC, Slashdot, Wired) are gone...
I updated it again, but if it resets again I'll leave it. I'm pretty sure there's a space where something was though...I just can't remember what :( - Topslakr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While I don't pay them money they are still profiting from me using the page. They don't have my money directly but the database of info about me and my online habits has value to them and their partners. I think it is fair for us to complain about these things. The day Google becomes officially evil (you can see it coming.. don't deny it) we are all going to be horrified when we find out just how much we have paid to them.
Side note... My page is fine.
- leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it was unreliable, I simply wouldn't use it.
- dcormier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Works on my box."
- dorianh49, on 10/12/2007, -0/+81. Cut a hole in the box...
- matrage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+72. Put your junk in that box
- sickanimations, on 10/12/2007, -0/+63. Make her open the box...
- rodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a dick in a box!
- RaxPower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Noticed it went for me earlier, Tried to recreate it and everything went again, as others say Bookmarks seemed to be alright.
- trilioth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It was not a problem for me. I use my homepage continuously. It's where I saw this headline.
- AnubisAscended, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nothing noticeably different here, although I DID have to remove the Countdown to 24 Day 6 tab, as it was slighly outdated :P
- HDPMS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mine kept falling off, even after trying to put it back together. adding bookmarks brought back all the old ones but kept getting zapped. now happened to a colleague too (about an hour later).
mine now back and stable...after i rebuilt it. - johnyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Yikes! So sorry about this everyone... but thanks so much for coming
here to report it. We're now in frantic-chase-down-this-bug mode here
at the Googleplex, and I hope to have more info for you soon.
For now, we're not entirely sure of this, but it's possible that
changing your homepage theme might cause the problem. SO, if you still
have your homepage intact, please avoid changing your theme until
further notice.
The big question I know you'll all want answered is whether you'll get
your homepage back once we sort things out... and the really honest
answer is that I hope so, but I just don't know yet.
Thanks for all your patience and helpful details. I will update this
thread as soon as I can.
- Jaime
p.s. no need to report this via the contact form that Fun n Frolic Ltd
linked to -- we are definitely aware of the problem, and I'll post to
this thread if there's more info I have or need from all of you.- godzillaWax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it wasn't because i changed my theme. it randomly happened half way through the day with me doing nothing
- trilioth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have never change my theme.
@godzillaWaz
Johnyboy may have meant whether or not you have EVER changed you theme.
@Johnyboy: If you are from Google thanks for catching this news and getting the ball rolling. - naterose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yay, an official google person giving us the news!
* crosses arms and looks at johnboy very suspiciously * - solonGFX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I noticed that I could get most of my widgets back ok after re-adding them, but when I changed the theme to something other than default (in my case beach) then tried to add another widget, or edit a setting for a widget, it would once more revert to the default.
- navarroj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Just to let everybody know that this message is legit
http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Web_Search_Help-Personalizing/msg/8b91d7361a074343 - DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i have never changed my theme, the whole thing just broke mid day , i done nothing to it at all
- dominic2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i'm in uk, so can't even change the theme yet, and it happened to me when i clicked on my second tab. anyway, good luck! i hope you can fix it
- sergiotd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0same here!!
And I didn't change the theme either...
I noticed this a couple of hours ago. And just now I was trying to fix this (putting it the way it was) and when I minimized one of the gadgets the browser refreshed and PUFF!!!! back to the beginning!!! - andshewas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I never knew this personal google existed. It's pretty cool. I do have a question, though - I was adding the widgets to the home page and there's a horoscope one. Where can I select which zodiac sign I am? It's defaulting me to Gemini and I'm Cancer. Not sure where it got info that I'm a Gemini. I know it's corny, but...any help?
- zadadka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Edit Settings, top right in the widget.
- godzillaWax, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2hey google, while your fixing things and all, do you think you can maybe make a theme for someone other than my 8 year old sister?
- theHM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first sign of anythign from google: http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Web_Search_Help-Personalizing/tree/browse_frm/thread/59b3283837690de0/6e88d1045df082db?rnum=91&_done=%2Fgroup%2FGoogle_Web_Search_Help-Personalizing%2Fbrowse_frm%2Fthread%2F59b3283837690de0%3F#doc_8b91d7361a074343
In short: they're aware of the problem, they're frantically trying to fix it and they don't know if previous settings will be restored. - s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3errr... netvibes...
- abcdefghij, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'll stick with My Yahoo! thankyouverymuck..
does everything this new Google does and more, sans the screwups.
yea yea I know give it a break cos they're new and stuff, but come on! there's a reason that they're corporate and not one-man startup with beer money to pay hosting - theOster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what about the new "type as you go" *not* with your history, but with popular searches?
that is driving me nuts - techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1so.. google had a few hours(?) of trouble? buried as lame.
- DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3its still ongoing you moron, and we are still waiting to see if our pages will be restored to the way they were before they vanished
- Daveoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dude, Google owns the internet. Don't dis.
- DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if the stuff we stored on the personnel homepage is lost and they can't restore it, then it goes to show how easily we can lose our data when we trust it'll be save on some remote server somewhere.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know how wipespread this actually is. Mine is fine.
- BillBoyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, honestly, anytime you have data somewhere, you should have a backup copy. Even if it's on google's server, you can't trust that they've backed your stuff up for you.
Google, maybe it's time you had a backup feature available for us that let us all keep a 'personal status' file on a disk somewhere, that we can load up at a later date. Would be a weird feature a lot of people wouldn't use, but it would be nice for the paranoid (i.e. myself). - rasensio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ahh! stop complaining! and first read the Terms of service.
Thanks good that companies like google exists today, the are doing tons of dollars but also they DO an AWESOME social contribution. screw you! - jasonmacari, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Since I've started using Netvibes I haven't been back to Google Home or Google Reader. Netvibes is truly impressive.
- mugile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did not changed my theme. it happened with me doing nothing :(((((((((((((((((((((
almost a year of collecting cool stuff vanished :(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( - sickanimations, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Jesus, does everybody -really- expect Google to protect your data on free accounts?
- jambamkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm glad it wasn't just me, i was about to blame the portable Firefox i was using.
- Trendecide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2happened to me as well... lost most of my bookmarks and notes. Not a shining moment for Google in my book.
- perchef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm in your homepage stealing your data !
- aleksdj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I lost almost all of my home, but bookmarks... :-(
- devilcius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine just fixed now! Got all my tabs and stuff back... :-D (09:20 GMT+1)
- bonstio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mine got fixed too! Only after I spent an hour setting it up again tho. It got fixed without warning so I lost my new setup which I kind of preferred. Aren't users hard to please?
- bertsisterwanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice to see my chums at the bus stop again!
- ivassilis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1back to normal again! It's like my favorite newsagent is open again. Nothing too terrible, but it feels very comfortable to see all tabs and newsbits back in place. It seems they had a backup after all :) Be careful Mr.G!
