- advanto, on 10/12/2007, -154/+21local.live.com has this feature for more than a year.
- BradDollar, on 10/12/2007, -60/+11There may have been stuff out about it for more than a year, but does that mean we ignore the release?
I think not.
My lil display that was for my submission:

- scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -8/+104You can stalk me here... here... and on Sunday's I'm usually sitting with my back turned here...
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -57/+10Goddammit I'm so sick and tired of submitters who can't even check their submission to see if it has some GLARING error in it. Even worse is you idiots who still digg it. If people didn't digg stories with such errors the submitters would figure it out real quick.
Go ahead and digg me down. - mccrusc, on 10/12/2007, -14/+60OOOOO, spooky, goole maps...
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -15/+76"local.live.com has this feature for more than a year. "
Who?
Do they have the best email and homepage too? What about regular searches, news, photos, etc. - jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5"Goddammit I'm so sick and tired of submitters who can't even check their submission to see if it has some GLARING error in it."
No digg down, just bitch block. - quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -4/+47windows live local usually gets all of google map's features before google does (like traffic reports, this my maps, ect.) but until it gets full firefox support and a faster, cleaner interface it will always just be the service that has more features that no one uses.
- advanto, on 10/12/2007, -16/+13I agree that this is a nice add for gmaps and it's good news for gmaps users. Well, my comment is totally just FYI. It's a good time to try the similar feature at http://local.live.com, their drawing tools, IMO, is better than gmaps. The line drawing tool will show the length of the line and the polygon tool will show the size of the area. Quite fun to measure how long do you run every morning or the lot size of your neighbor:)
See some screentshots here:
http://virtualearth.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2BBC66E99FDCDB98!8495.entry - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11In defense of advanto, local.live.com does have, in some circumstances, better satelite imagery. I only use it as a supplement for when gmaps doesn't have an area I need to see. Sure, it's an MS product, but it does have it merits.
- NPcomplete, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6@quickgold192
Live Local just had a release on Tuesday with several performance improvements. The initial page load time is now as fast as Google Maps (and there are many more features than Gmaps). It is also fully compatible with Firefox. Included in their new release, the 3D world is also now available for Firefox (but windows only). - hdtvdust, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4 jaycliche...maybe not the best, but just the most popular. Like everything Google has released other than Ad SEnse and serach, Google is NOT the leader in maps, or e-mail. especially e-mail in which it is a rather insignificant player market share-wise.
The fact of the matter is, if someone didn't point this out, next week someone would have linked to Live.local and claimed that they stole the idea from Google.
And actually, it was the opposite. This is a perfeect example of Google stealing from Microsoft.
quickgold192...again...Gooogle Maps is NOT the market leader, ***** moron. I guess no one uses that then either by your logic. - Modizzle, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Responding to first post because I'm an attention whore.
- dnthomps, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Does anybody find it at all creepy that google has your search history and "saved locations" (I sure as hell didn't "save" them) for searches and locations that you searched while you were NOT logged in. Google has ever single search I have made back to Aug. They have associated ALL (logged in and not logged in) searches made by my computer to one of my many google accounts.
- dnthomps, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3And don't miss these links:

i click to draw the line (with line tool selected) and it drags the map around instead
seems like a few kinks. but neat idea, will be cool when it works - KennMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"i click to draw the line (with line tool selected) and it drags the map around instead"
To the genius above me: You don't drag at all, you click once to place an endpoint. The line is created between endpoints. - GamerzCorner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@advanto
Thats what I use Nike+ for :D
and that is powered by google and it tells you how far distances are, ect.
I'm kinda boggled why they diddent include this feature in "my google maps" Im sure they will down the road. - advanto, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1ZOMG, my first post got -72 diggs and still going:)
- RandomEngy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5local.live.com has full firefox support. As of yesterday, the last annoying firefox bug (sticking to your cursor) is gone. It's got some good perks too such as bird's eye view and actually being able to close the pane at the left. Maybe you people should try it out instead of just digging people down for liking something that's not google.
- BradDollar, on 10/12/2007, -60/+11There may have been stuff out about it for more than a year, but does that mean we ignore the release?
- gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36Always a good thing when google betters an already great product.

- dealsdealer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2why is it supposed to be "AWESOME" ???
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This isn't really making their product better. It's just easier to find functionality for the masses.
I've been developing with their Maps API since it was released and believe me when I say these sorts of features were among the first things people built and hosted. A slightly related and popular example would be Frappr when it first launched, though now I believe they went to the Yahoo Maps API.
So it's nothing new, but it's nice Google has officially supported/marketed some popular community driven ideas.

- jaredseth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12therippa,
You can try this Google Maps pedometer for that:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
Be gentle people...I don't know how robust that server is. - bigjimslade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
Agreed. It'd be nice to be able click a line and get "how long am I" information. Integrated. - alceria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wayfaring.com will calculate the distance. I was hoping the new google map feature would build this in because I find the wayfaring interface a little annoying. (For some reason it can never find any city I put in and I have to zoom the map to my location manually, which is a pain.)
I just tried that gmaps pedometer site, but I can't figure out how to draw a route for the life of me. - alienforever, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2local.live.com does have it..
- NPcomplete, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Live Maps (or Live Local) already supports giving you the distance for lines and it also gives you the the area and perimeter for shapes.
- jaredseth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2alceria,
Click on Start recording, double click your start point on the map, move to the second point and double click again. The Total distance and Last leg fields should fill themselves in. You can then continue with additional legs. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Measuring area would be very useful too.
- thehans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The first thing I wanted to do was map out my morning jog, to calculate distance. Hopefully it will come soon.

- tedhead2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This is great! Now the flexibility of Google Earth's user-content can be easily added to Google maps and used for simple things like sending a map to a friend. Google products are great :)
- naio21, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2ZOMG I couldn't live without this amazing feature! YOU SAVE MY LIFE!!!!1111!!!!oneone!

- waterboy1628, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My Maps: An assassins best friend. Now you can just check the web for your targets daily jogging route.
- tjdiv1985, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This doesn't introduce any new features to on line mapping software. Microsoft has had many of these features in local.live.com for over a year now. However, both companies have implemented the features a little differently.
Why the big excitement when Google does it? Will Digg get excited at anything Google does?
Anyone find the idea of your map displaying in search results a little odd?- thailand1972, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, anything Google does is AWESOME on Digg.
It's all part of the fanboy psychology:
Psychologically, fanboy-ism (the adoration of a company because it's acceptable and cool to like this company) is just someone projecting the message: I have no originality of thought, I'm a coward who must run with the herd. I will never have the talent or the knowhow to ever do anything original or outstanding so I will earn by-proxy the warm fuzzy feeling of associating myself with a company that is officially recognised as cool and successful.
It's cool to like something simply because it's very good, but when you see any criticism automatically dugg down of the by-proxy success (in this case Google), you realise fanboyism is at play, and we're dealing with a significant number of those on Digg.
The very same people will now digg down this comment because it's too much of a home-truth for them. Go ahead people: feel your 'power' while projecting your mediocrity so transparently.
- thailand1972, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, anything Google does is AWESOME on Digg.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Ahh, the stalker's dream!
- pierre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is NOT a stalkers dream. Just dont make your maps public..... no one can see them but you.
- Hemingrubbish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5trouble is that they are public by default so there is always gonna be people who unwittingly release personal information.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And there's always people (read stupid teenage girls) who think it's cool to put everywhere they hang out on myspace or wherever else with no privacy.

- Halgy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3How does a story with a blatant typo make the front page?
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like that they have Featured Maps listed, but what I'd like is a searchable database of My Maps. For example, I want to be able to search for a place that I'll be vacationing.
And please don't say "Google.com", smart-asses. :P - hmac, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Cool! Just stumbled across this today.

- jmnugent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0FrogMuffin....
I'm building a city-map of my local city by using www.communitywalk.com
You can setup multiple users (have everyone use the same Community Walk logon) .. AND.... CommunityWalk has editable Categories (of locations)
(so you can make a map where people can click on "Movie theaters" or "Restaurants" and the map will update to show only those locations.

Yet another example of Digg hypocrisy. - aboyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does Google or local.live.com allow a user to upload their own image for a map? What if I want to input the Greyhawk map and then annotate it? Possible yet?

- mrKhoa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You should be able to save directions between your locations. The line and shape tools are kind of useless. I was expecting that when you click "to here" or "from here" that you could enter the name of a preset location and it would know, but it doesn't.
- domokun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That's a great feature, however, Google Maps is getting to the point where I can't use it for more than 2 minutes.

Call it a feature, but for me this is plain Memory Leak... =( - iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3WTF, now Google wants to know your location too!
- bart9h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like Wikimapia concept better.
Instead of creating your own map, you collaborate with a single worldwide database.
http://wikimapia.org - whiteEEnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very cool, but I would like to see them add GPX support. Upload your GPX file and it puts the track or "line" on the map for you. People who view the map should have an option to download the gpx file. That would be great for hikers (trail routes).
