- scarycomp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40I'd hate to publicly acknowledge that I'm a Microsoft fan boy, but I've been waiting for this for a while. Now where's Vista Customer Preview?
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6In coming weeks, Microsoft will start the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP) to allow developers and IT professionals who are not a part of those programs to obtain the code and begin their own testing. Also as part of the CPP, Microsoft will invite a broader group of technology enthusiasts to receive a build of the operating system to begin testing the various consumer scenarios that Windows Vista enables.

that's what you get for installing beta crap. Now I need to go find my office 2003 disk. ffs - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4oops, double post
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I know what you mean. I.. er.. have previously obtained an alternate version of Office 2007.. glad to get my hands on a real copy of the beta now, one I can actually report bugs for, etc.
I'm a big fan of Outlook, tbh. And I really think the ribbons work for Word / Excel. - tmarc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1chris9902
Try doing the system restore XP feature that takes your computer back to the exact specs of yesterday, or any other day it has saved, thats what i do whenever i screw something up, i figure its worth a shot - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I did that but it's totally screwed my office up. I can't open anything and most of my files got corrupt.
I have no idea what happened. It kept coming up with "Close this program | retry | abort" but it did not tell me what program to close just a message saying "Close this program" -- what the installer, windows what?
I closed all my background tasks that I could and it finished the install then started going backwards and then came up with the above error. Really weird.
makes a good advert for OpenOffice don't it. - llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Don't waste your money on Office 2007. Download and start using Open Office 2.0.2 because it will do everything that Microsoft Office can do and many things it can't.
- daza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry chris9902, but what more can you expect from Beta software. Even though I'm going to install it over my Office 2003, I'm sure it's advised to test it in isolation and away from anything important. If it screws up for me, I won't think too much of it, since it really is in a testing phase.
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14anyone else have a connection failure after updating your live profile?
- ejdmoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Try using IE instead of firefox. Worked for me.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, im using IE7 and cant get it to work. same error.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yep looks like microsoft has falen to the digg effect, I kept pressing f5 and eventually it went through. Looks like they are using smartsource, whihc looks like their own version of the bittorent for the download....
- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or use the IE tab for firefox
- smackit, on 10/12/2007, -62/+6Hey, this guy saw my post and had the audacity to dupe it and then post on my story that he shuld get the diggs. Undigg him. He doesnt deserve the attention.

- EpicCrusadr, on 10/12/2007, -22/+10Why the hell do you need 2 gigabytes of space on your hard drive?!?!? It's a WORD PROCESSING Suite!
- BradMW, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Thanks for alerting us. Now I need to rush out and spend 2 cents on a new hard drive.
2 gigs seems completely reasonable for the amount of functionality office brings. - trollenlord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Wrong. It is office productivity suite. Word processing is only one tiny piece of that stuff.
- NJank, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2and you have all perfectly dated yourselves
I, for one, agree with EpicCrusadr. But that's just me. - jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1those that don't GET what microsoft office is about and can do should get open office. it's more down to your basic level of functionality requirements.
- BradMW, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Thanks for alerting us. Now I need to rush out and spend 2 cents on a new hard drive.
- j_h_o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Profile update works now. Just got thru fine. Anyone else still having problems?
- eyeaml337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21All 2007 Microsoft Office system Beta 2 software has an expiration date of February 1, 2007. After expiration, 2007 Microsoft Office system Beta 2 will continue to work in a reduced functionality mode that limits your options and operations.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10wow that's pretty generous!
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3until someone cracks this version that is
- Zero82z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thankfully, I still have Beta 1 to go back to.
- BaCk1a5h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The main link does not work, just go to microsoft.com and go to office and beta. works fine
- KarbonKopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I got through as well....it works now.
- tthiel, on 10/12/2007, -12/+26Funny disclaimer
"Beta software does not necessarily display the same high level of stability of shipped Microsoft products.'
Ha ha good one Microsoft. - MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -42/+15OpenOffice 2.0 is better, cheaper, and much much smaller.
- BaCk1a5h, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Yes, but no one cares, this is quite free also. =-)
- daemoncel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7and even if it did, try to convince millions of businesses to use it!
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -9/+48OpenOffice better than Office 2007? Are you ***** me?
Yes, OpenOffice is a great free alternative with many of the most-used office features that work quite well. However, to compare that piece of software to a far more dense, functional, and compatible suite like Office 2007 just shows your complete and utter ignorance.
Advocating open source software is all fine and good, but do NOT dare do that by trying to mislead people with lies. - calhoun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25OpenOffice is free, which is definitely nice, but it defnitely doesn't have the features Office has. One day...
- Blarbo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Unfortunetely, Openoffice is NOT better. It is very good, but MS Office is the gold standard for a reason. I actually wish openoffice was better then MS Office, then I would use it instead.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1another 10 yr old fan boy i'm afraid....I think someon has fed them lies all their lives....poor kid.
- yoshihama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Having worked at Sun and been FORCED to use StarOffice (which is essentially the same as OpenOffice), I can say that it is by no means 'better' than MS Office. It's a Java based app, so it's a slow moving resource hog, even on my 2.4Ghz 1GB RAM computer. Also, the level of polish in the UI is not there, and some of the actions that they force the user to perform are just wonky.
I'll concede that OpenOffice is cheaper, but for some things in this world you still get what you pay for.
- ktrek311, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3I had the connection error with firefox and IE... i'm on a public wireless server.. will try again at home...
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -24/+5Thank you for your utterly worthless contribution to this discussion. :)
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -20/+10"Beta software does not necessarily display the same high level of stability of shipped Microsoft products."

MSFT INSULTS!
I'm surprised it took so long. Golly gee, hammering Microsoft. That's original.
I was also waiting for the "Nya-nya-nya, Open Office is better, free, and open source, so I'm better than you" snotty comments that every middle school hacker wanna be has to make when the words "Microsoft Office" comes up... - scotw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Update: Works fine now :-) Also copies of Project & Visio 2007 as well as other "goodies".
- logicmethod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7After looking at the screenshots, I still wonder why Microsoft can develop all kinds of GUI enhancements, but still can't figure out how to anti-alias rounded corners on windows. Call me picky, but as an interactive designer, things like that really stand out to me.
With the exception of the ambiguous "windows bubble button", my impression of the ribbon interface paradigm and overall coherence of the UI is positive.- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That's what Vista is for! Doing antialiasing in software mode takes tons of CPU. Isn't XP's "Show contents while dragging" slow enough already? Vista's Aero UI will be DX9 accelerated so you can expect all kinds of visual goody gumdrops!
- mbeckfl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I've been a Office fan since the first version, but those screen-shots don't do much for me - I hope there is a way to get a more classic look.. that looks like baby's first wordproecessr... what's with the huge building block type icon sets?
- scotw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it looks funny at first but once you start using it, the ribbon is very good. Worth a try.
- Night201, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is no "classic version" - what you see is how it will be and only how it will be.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope there is, our organization will not rollout software unless it has a common look and feel. If we were to just roll this out then we have to retrain thousands of people. not really worth it for a new word processor.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Ninjaboy
Your office will have little choice but to upgrade soon enough. Once the world starts circulating .docx files (yes, .doc is being retired) your company can either get with the times or stay in its hideyhole.
Besides, the new ribbon is supposed to be much more intuitive and context-sensitive. I adored the context options in Office 2003 and can't wait to see the new UI! - Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Office is not a word processor.. MS word is.. Office is a suite of desktop applications, they all contain the new look and feel.
- bhorst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Your office will have little choice but to upgrade soon enough. Once the world starts circulating .docx files (yes, .doc is being retired) your company can either get with the times or stay in its hideyhole."
And this is why monopoly behavior is, and should be, illegal. Of course, with this upgrade things are different, because ODF has been chosen as an ISO standard, and DOCX has not. Many organizations (Massachusetts, and most non-US gov'ts around the world, along with smart companies) will not accept another pseudo-standard from a single vendor.
ODF will allow users to upgrade or not at their schedule. Why should an organization spend thousands or millions of dollars on an upgrade if they don't need it? Just because of file format incompatibilities? People are tired of this; hence the groundswell behind ODF.
ODF lets users run OpenOffice, StarOffice, KOffice, TextMaker, IBM Workplace and Lotus Notes, and with the newly-released plugin, even Microsoft Office. Everyone can be compatible if they share a common format, just like we do with HTML. The web could never have succeeded on proprietary formats, and soon we'll probably think the same thing about office document formats.
And yes, the economy will be better off for it, because competition will drive down prices, drive up quality, and lead to real innovations that this market has not seen in many years.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Does anyone have a rundown of what's new in this?
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2everything. largest changes in the history of suite.

- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't you know the best way to deal with overloaded servers?? Just keep hitting F5 until it works!
Do this until you are assigned your free product key, and then download Office from this direct and hella fast link:

- satch, on 10/12/2007, -21/+5I can't believe some of the comments on this story. Furthur proof that Apple users are ***** of the technology world.
BTW, Office 2007 looks amazing.- dmthomas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't know how you deduced that someone talking about OpenOffice was an Apple user. I'd be willing to bet there's a far greater chance they're a Linux user considering Office does exist for OS X ;-)
- logicmethod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@satch: Way to generalize. Lots of Open Office banter, but that's to be expected, and is relevant to this discussion. You, however, were the first to bring up the ridiculous Mac / PC debate, which doesn't even make sense considering that many (if not most) business Mac users run Microsoft Office for the Mac. If you feel comfortable calling a user group "*****" because of their OS choice, I would be interested to hear your comments on racism.
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What the hell are you talking about? Apple users? What does that have to do with anyone bashing Microsoft? Especially considering this is OFFICE we are talking about. Office has been on the Mac from the beginning, some would argue that the Mac versions are better (including the Mac Office team). OpenOffice zealots are all Linux and Windows users anyway. I think OpenOffice is a great free productivity package, but MS Office is still a significantly better product and worth the price.
- hashkaran, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Stupid thing is down already..
- j_h_o, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4This "stupid" thing has to handle a crazy amount of traffic. You try putting that much data online for people to download =)
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I still prefer Wordstar, Visicalc and dBase II.
- j_h_o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are these 'public' keys ie... everyone gets the same one? Or does this page actually generate unique keys for everyone?
- Greymarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I cant understand how people feel the need to bash Microsoft, when they provide you with a FREE BETA! Good lord people, its free! You have no right to complain. Microsoft doesnt have to provide this beta. Be thankful you get to try the product for free before you buy it.
Unbelievable. Not only do some Digg users look a gift-horse in the mouth, they try to brush its teeth.- dmthomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Free betas are cool. I'm gonna try it when I get home. But... don't fool yourself completely it isn't out of the goodness of a company's heart to provide a free beta. They are getting free testing out of you (if you choose to provide feedback that is).
- trollenlord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yeah. Of course no OPEN SOURCE project's server has crashed under the load when they have released something!
- xsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2do you need a key??
i'm just downloading from the link above
also.. does anyone know if this overwrites your current verison of office if you install it?- j_h_o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It uninstalls your current version (overlapping components, that is.) I've been running beta 1 Technical Refresh for a couple of months now - perfectly fine. A few random rough spots, incomplete parts... but for everyday use, it gets the job done.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The previous beta allowed you to keep office 2003 installed along with 2007. Hopefully it is the same with this one.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just installed it. You can keep both versions installed. You can only have one version of outlook though, so you have to pick. But you can keep both versions of word, powerpoint, ect....
- ideefix, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1down for me to, for a company like crosoft this is not unbelievable, they are unable to satisfies theirs customers with a f*cikg download and this download is not a single example.
- Blarbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's a beta, not like your paying money for it or anything.
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are hosting the site remotely, microsoft isnt using their own servers. The people they chose to serve the files cannot handle the load that digg just made for it.
- diggnationyouth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OMG! I'm a miracle man! It takes a certain amount of wisdom to know that people will be saying that openoffice is better than Office!..... not really.... i hate MSFTF but I know that Office is elite and if anyone says any different... well you should just choke.... Office 2007 looks good though, i don't think that the openoffice UI is at the same quality or even near it. OpenOffice is for people that can't afford or people that don't know how to pirate Office....
- Snakey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, OpenOffice is not only for people that can't afford MS Office, OpenOffice should be the standard in companies because of the use of their OpenDocument, which is an (almost) an ISO standard, if companies make deals, they will trust the one who has an ISO standard, unfortunately this is not the case in the it/office-world, while it should be. I'd like to have every Office-suite to be able to open/edit/save OpenDocument files
- bhorst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I don't really care if MS Office is better than OpenOffice... there can be little doubt that it is not $500 better (the difference in price between the two)!
Those who feel they need Microsoft Office should use it. But Microsoft should not be permitted to force people to buy it if they don't want to--by using tricks like changing the file format so you're incompatible if you don't upgrade.
If the market were fluid and competitive, probably 90% of people would be on OpenOffice, and less than 10% would actually need Microsoft Office. It just doesn't add much value (for most users, any value) above the OpenOffice 2.0.2 baseline!
- zakharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3after filling out your profile, if you get "Unkown Error", paste the following link in:
https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/office.aspx?lcid=1033&Action=download&Region=NA&CountryCode=USA
Fill in email, language. You may get server busy, but keep trying to hit reload or going back to retry again. You eventually get to choose the packages you want and then it will give you a key for each product (and download links).
(Choose Office even if you have already downloaded it from the above link because you need the key) - ba11k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1can someone post a key so we don't have to sit through the server busy problem or are they all unique?
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2sure the key is::...........

- anonymonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thanks for the direct links jho. I used WackGet to download. I could not get the Office Downloader (SmartSource for Office Downloads) to validate my login, so these links saved the day.
- KarbonKopy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This might help as well, its the link to the mini installer that helps you download the rest of the files....

- j_h_o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I had to refresh about 3 times before getting in - it can't be that hard =) The server is alive and kicking, just overloaded. Keep trying, or be lazy and enjoy the links? =)
Since it's a free beta, at least give them a 'garbage' email address so they can 'update' you... A nice public one where they can spam you? - hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Has anyone downloaded this to a Mac? I would rather not install it on my production machine (a PC), bu I have a testing machine I could sue it on (an iMac).
- j_h_o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is a Win32 x86 release... so... no OS X.
- Dari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe he's wanting to run it through Boot Camp or Parallels.
- ultrasoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thanks for the links. Trying Microsoft's link kept resulting in the same server problem messages. Cheers

- xsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1can anyone let me know if this will overwrite my current version of office 2003???
- reddit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What exactly do u mean by overwrite?
Looks like you won't be able to use office 2003 after installing 2007. For ex, I get a "MAPI32.dll is corrupt/wrong version" error when I try to start OL 2003. - rprins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, this will overwrite your Office 2003 install.
- kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can choose in the advanced install options whether or not you want it to upgrade (overwrite) or leave the current version and still install the new version.
- reddit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What exactly do u mean by overwrite?
- feenikz4180, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great. Made it to the front page... even microsoft can't handle the traffic digg sent. Downloads of the beta are dead at the moment.

--------------------------- - ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Installed just fine here. No errors at all. Anyone else see the "Mac / OSX" style here? This new layout is going to take a little bit of getting used to. I'm curious what Office 2008 for Mac is going to look like after this. Good luck downloading it guys and thanks again to the guy with the keys above. You give Digg a good name!
Now, Go and share it with the world! - samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for those links JHO... Microsoft seems to be suffering from the "Digg effect"....
