- sholt, on 06/24/2008, -7/+136When FireFox crashes, the signal is trapped, and it launches mozilla's "Crash Reporter" application (contained within Contents/MacOS inside the application's bundle). When that "Crash Reporter" app crashed, OS X's system crash reporter kicked in.
That's what this pic is of: OS X's provided crash reporter, reporting a crash in Mozilla's "Crash Reporter" application. Simple!

- heavyal, on 06/24/2008, -5/+17Completely off topic, but I am really sick of people using the word 'a' coupled with 'OS' or 'OSX'. When the word following the 'a' begins with a vowel, whether the vowel is part of an abbreviation such as 'OS' or the acronym spelled out such as 'Operating System' the 'a' become an 'an'! Therefore instead of saying "We need a OSX creash reporter" you would say "We need an OSX crash reporter" .. the addition of one little letter, is that so hard?

- Refrag, on 06/24/2008, -3/+31It is Firefox's Crash Reporter that crashed. Not Mac OS X's.
- skeletorcares, on 06/24/2008, -19/+6And that's .... not in OSX? Cuz my firefox for pc #1. has never crashed. and #2 never gave me mac error messages. I think it might have something to do with OSX.
1+1 can only equal 'its not macs fault', to a fanboy. - BossKey, on 06/24/2008, -6/+16@skeletorcares: There is a huge, huge difference between an application failing and the entire system failing. It is not true that programs don't crash on Macs, those are a result of developer fail. If Firefox crashes in OS X, that is usually a Firefox bug to fix.
However, the operating system itself is very stable. My OS X machines routinely experience multi-week uptimes before I voluntarily reboot them. Unlike my friends who feel they have to reboot their Windows machines daily. (I know Windows is actually better than that; my Windows machine at least can handle multi-day uptimes.) - jgtg32a, on 06/24/2008, -0/+12@BossKey
Do I just have a freak install of windows or something?
I don't shutdown my machine ever, currently its been on for 2 months, and that's because I moved (I did hibernate it though).
But I know I've easily gone 10 months w/o issue. - BossKey, on 06/24/2008, -6/+3@jgtg32a
No, like I said, I know Windows is better than a lot of Mac fanboys say. I have had long uptimes with XP myself. That said, I think it's easier for a Windows installation to get flaky than an OS X installation. Some people's machines are just really messed up. If you're like me and you know how not to let crap onto your system, I'm sure you can achieve long uptimes on Windows.
Both Windows and Mac fanboys hang onto old myths about how crashy the other guy's systems are, but that hasn't been true for Mac or Windows for at least 5 years unless there is a lot of crap on the machine.
That's why my earlier posts say "...my (Windows) friends who feel they have to reboot daily..." They are not computer savvy and their systems are often not optimized.
You can see this difference in OS perception in coffee shops. Mac people tend to get coffee, sit down, open the lid, and work right away. Windows people tend to start the machine, walk away, return with coffee, come back, log in, sip coffee, and then start working. I see this over and over...a lot of Windows users feel they need to shut down all the way, even if they don't have to. - skeletorcares, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2@bosskey. You are saying the mac users don't really know whats going on and are along for the ride. We're in agreement there. And we are in agreement that of the millions, if not billions of windows users, that there are dumb ones. Coffee shops have never really been known for the intellectualism, but more the perception of it. That being said, and me working on both types of machines for work. Vista+XP(latest versions) v OSX.4 (yes i know there is a .5, but i heard its even worse).... OSX crashes way more than both systems combined, let it be a hard restart for no reason on OSX or just a Photoshop crash, over and over, with a little dreamweaver mixed in. I don't get that on Vista or XP. i use both now as a choice instead of the unreliable OSX, which i spent hours and hours redoing work because it was crashing so much. I tried IT. Ok, no help. I tried calling apple care, reinstall os. ok, no help. reinstall programs. Ok, no help. Try new ram, ok, no help. Ship it back to company. Ok no help/apple says it works AOK! With no way to fix it or no way to know what it is because the support community knows nothing, just a whole bunch of people just along for the ride. Even the people that called themselves 'experts' at macs couldn't help me. 'Bind this to that to this to that with terminal and use this linux code to get the freaking delete key to... well delete.' ridiculous. But i just want it to stop crashing! 'well if you use sudo.... bla bla bla'. Will that fix the crashing?. 'Well no. but it will be 1.0065% faster'
macrumors.com is the only thing that is relied upon and that's just more hype to supplement all the other hype that apple puts out.
ok i'm spent.

2) Mozilla's "crash reporter" kicked in and crashed;
3) Mac OS reported the later crash.
What you see in the picture is number 3.

can't be evaluated without limits, so I'll use them:

∞

Which I don't think it would handle well, see MS at least has the upper hand in having been dealing with it for the last while. Where Mac's are just getting enough of a user base now to prove that they are just as vulnerable as PC's when used by the masses.
Linux is the way to go.- jgtg32a, on 06/24/2008, -1/+1Under that argument you should go with BSD
- ubrikkean, on 06/24/2008, -7/+34It's funny because nothing has ever infected my PC. Now I'm going to go defragment my hard drive and play CoD4... care to join me? Oh, wait. You can't.
- rolf, on 06/24/2008, -16/+7Jeez, the people that foam at the mouth are the anti-Mac fanbois more than the Mac fanbois. Let me draw out my response this time:
Point 1: You are a sample size of one. You probably know how to use a computer so you'll be less likely infected. However, it's undeniable that the bot swarms out there are comprised of compromised Windows computers. Not Mac. Not Linux.
Point 2: I'm sick of hearing that every single practical or theoretical vulnerability in Mac automatically puts it on par with Windows security. Nothing is perfect (and that include Mac) but there are degrees between extremes. One case of an OS X app crashing does not turn OS X into crap. Most of the theoretical vulnerabilities require physical access to the machine. If someone has physical access to your machine, you have other things to worry about.
Point 3: I have my parents run OS X so that I don't have to babysit their computers when I visit for the holidays. It's good at that and yet runs the programs they need (Quickbooks). They hardly care about running CoD. They know almost nothing about how computers work - OS X is perfect for them.
Point 4: I personally run Ubuntu on my desktop and am looking forward to getting a eeePC 1000 when it comes out. Both linux.
Point 5: On neither OS do I need to waste time defragging my harddrive.
Point 6: Windows Vista is better than XP from a security standpoint. XP Home did not have the same user security controls of XP Pro. Now it's standard in the lowest common denominator of Vista Home. I am glad they are improving. I don't hate Windows, but it did give me a lot of headaches over the years since I work with it enough. - nksoccer13, on 06/24/2008, -2/+10@rolf stop being a fanboy. I have used macs all of my life and they are great, easy to us and everything just works. That being said ubrikkean made a valid point windows completely dominates on the gaming front. A point that you failed to address.
I do not understand how you think defragging your hard drive is a deal breaker for windows. It is not difficult to do and you dont have to do it for windows to operate correctly. - noelsusman, on 06/24/2008, -1/+11@rofl you still can't play CoD4...
- AnOMNOMymous, on 06/24/2008, -4/+5He did address it... He said his parents don't play COD4. Neither do I, I read books! **gamers head explodes**
- LeonidasStokely, on 06/24/2008, -2/+3I agree with the sentiment. If I so much as say I prefer OS X to Xp or Vista because of, say, its look and overall design I will be labelled as a fanboy and buried to hell. Why?
- trispear, on 06/24/2008, -4/+1@nksoccer

I'm surprised it's only DX9 I'd love to see this in DX10 on my Mac.
I'll probably be on the server before you though since I don't need to defrag. I don't miss doing that at all. - jasonh1234, on 06/25/2008, -1/+2Hey does anyone know if I can use all 32GB of my RAM for COD4 in XP on my Mac? Or am I still limited to XP's 4GB? - Infidelcastr0, on 06/24/2008, -6/+5Call us when macs are popular enough to start getting tons of malware, it's not that they are immune, it's that no one cares. If your PC has malware you have no one to blame but yourself.

- redhitman, on 06/24/2008, -4/+9It's going to be a fun day when computer hackers actually start giving a damn about Macs. Why would someone make a virus that's only going to affect a small percentage of computer users?
So yeah, enjoy that while it lasts, because while Macs get more and more popular, Apple isn't doing ***** to protect it's users from the viruses that WILL eventually arrive.- rolf, on 06/24/2008, -2/+5Stupid myth that still persists.

- bpapa, on 06/24/2008, -3/+1Smart people who are running "Crash Reporter?" Sounds like a good way to spend your time.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 06/24/2008, -1/+8Someone who isn't totally lost..
- bpapa, on 06/24/2008, -4/+1Clearly. Those lost people are missing out on a crashing browser. Who will help them find their way?
- Kanidia, on 06/24/2008, -2/+4What's wrong with using Firefox? People have their browser preferences. Plus, Adblock is almost mandatory.
- bpapa, on 06/24/2008, -6/+2Give me a break. On Safari 3, occasionally I'll have a pop-under that I'll have to close at some point (I never even really notice it since Safari is always running), but it's rare. Unless you're one of those asshats that can't bear to see a single internet advertisement, regardless of how intrusive it is, what's the point of AdBlock?
- juicebag, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Using Adblock makes pages load quite a bit faster.
- kingfoot, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1a lot faster if you use it on your ipod or iphone.

http://digg.com/software/Oh_the_irony_19- AnOMNOMymous, on 06/24/2008, -12/+1That's not irony. That's just a bit silly. You didn't say it was irony. I was just saying it's not irony.
- bemidia, on 06/24/2008, -2/+10We love irony here on Digg. It gets us out of bed in the morning.
- dlite922, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Yep, I almost didn't click it.
Catchy titles like this are like virgins.
Use them so often and their prostitutes as face value after 18 F* times.
- ryleyleckie, on 06/24/2008, -13/+3yeah, never seen this before... ??
- timj11dude, on 06/24/2008, -15/+4Lol, that guy should have clicked report to report to Apple that their crash reporter has reported that it has crashed.
- SgtBlue, on 06/24/2008, -3/+10"Crash Reporter" is the Firefox crash reporter, dumbass, not an Apple thing. Nice job failing though.
- Gatesophile, on 06/24/2008, -16/+6Happened to me on Windows once with the Help and Support center. Thanks for the help, Microsoft!

- enderklein, on 06/24/2008, -16/+7This happened to me when I tried to stack 1.6 GB of uncompressed TIFFs into one file in Photoshop.
- nolesfan247, on 06/24/2008, -2/+3You just happen to be a member of an elite group of retards.
- skeletorcares, on 06/24/2008, -1/+1Yeah, when i do that with my PC, they just open
- enderklein, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1funny though, only the crash reporter crashed, photoshop eventually recovered and did what I wanted it to do. Helps if you have a quad-core Mac.
- eszymczyk, on 06/24/2008, -15/+8take THAT PC bashers!
- nebkiwi, on 06/24/2008, -1/+5Mac OS X runs on generic PC's... and to be honest, the thing that makes Macs good in the fanboys opinion is the OS, so if they bash a PC, its just pointless. I think I'll shut up now.
- drunkmonkey01, on 06/24/2008, -1/+1it doesnt run on all pc's. i tried installing it on mine and the leopard installer wouldnt recognize my seagate hard drive. lame

- ChrisAlbon, on 06/24/2008, -19/+9With its dying breath, the crash reporter reported its down demise.
- MattInChicago, on 06/24/2008, -28/+16Love how the Windows fanboys try to make this a Mac issue where it's a Firefox and Firefox Crash Reporter issue, NOT an Apple or Mac OS X issue. Which by the way was left unaffected by the crash of Firefox. But hey why confuse facts right?
- UsablePuddle, on 06/24/2008, -6/+4I'm sorry man, I dugg you up. But I suppose a burying is the price you are going to have to pay for being correct.
- poploserdigg, on 06/24/2008, -4/+2"But I suppose a burying is the price you are going to have to pay for being an Apple Obsessed Diggnorami"

- theberlindoctor, on 06/24/2008, -6/+5why do i always hear this from mac heads? When ***** crashes its always the apps fault.. riiiiight..
- CheeseNRice, on 06/24/2008, -4/+2Because it was? Why try to be such a hater cause your computing life sucks. Damn cry baby. Eat *****.
- acatzr800, on 06/24/2008, -4/+9Regardless of the fact that we've already established that while FF crashed, that is the OS crash reporter. At least if you're going to blindly defend your operating system, learn a bit about it.
- ryan83189, on 06/25/2008, -1/+2Mac fanboys make fun of vistas incompatibility with certain drivers, not Microsoft's fault.

- bearythebear, on 06/24/2008, -11/+2And how am i supposed to report that?
- fuzzybeard, on 06/24/2008, -16/+4Goddamnit, who divided by zero again?!!
- friday81, on 06/24/2008, -42/+83Firefox 3's crash reporter crashed (Firefox/Contents/MacOS/Crash Reporter), by the way, not OSX crash reporter...still funny nevertheless
- mistahroth, on 06/24/2008, -14/+6My browser crashed right after I looked at that image, and I had to fill out the crash report..... that was 100x more ironic lol
- theberlindoctor, on 06/24/2008, -35/+153I get crashes 4-5 times a day. Adobe Bridge crashes constantly, Itunes crashes rather often and photoshop crashes at the most inopportune times.
Yay apple.- poonaka, on 06/24/2008, -3/+26at least you don't get the beach ball...
- theberlindoctor, on 06/24/2008, -2/+13Ha, I get PLENTY of random ass freezes. No shortage of those either.
- rjam710, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9Ahh... the gay pinwheel of death.
- farfromperfectx, on 06/25/2008, -2/+5Why are things always "the ___ of death"? Does any death ever actuall occur? Why do you have to bring death into it?
- quirk3k, on 06/24/2008, -10/+14Gee, It sounds like you need to re-platform your mac and/or check your RAM.
My wife uses Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Quark Xpress (in Classic) to layout news letters, fliers and announcements. She listens to audio books and podcasts in iTunes while working. She has very few crashes.- tomjunlee, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4If you work in the Office, THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID.
- cerealjynx, on 06/24/2008, -12/+9Are you on a PPC Mac or something? I use all those programs on a daily basis and haven't seen a single crash. Firefox 3 is an entirely different story, along with Transmission.
- theberlindoctor, on 06/24/2008, -2/+3nope, its a macpro dual core intel xenon, 8gigs of ram ddr2
My coworker has the same machine next to me and we have pretty much the same issues.
I'm very familiar with hardware issues (from overclocking PCs) and I havent found any hardware issues with this machine.- longbow486, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2*Xeon
- otayyo, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2I used to think Transmission was crashing, but when left alone, it would start responding again. I think it was making room for new transfers, because especially big torrents would take forever. After I started leaving it alone when I got the beach ball, it seemed to always work out. Just thought I would mention that, because I didn't get it right away.
- theberlindoctor, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Yea, sometimes it comes back from freezing, sometimes not.. sometimes after as much as a half hour.. (when i've got a photoshop file i've havnent saved and its worth it to wait)
its ridiculous. I get really frustrated and want to bring in my PC, but then i go home and have some other retarded ass problem with Vista. Damned if you do..
- theberlindoctor, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Yea, sometimes it comes back from freezing, sometimes not.. sometimes after as much as a half hour.. (when i've got a photoshop file i've havnent saved and its worth it to wait)
- phaedrusnz, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1I used to have issues with responsiveness from Transmission, but that pretty much went away after I stopped mdworker monitoring my incoming torrents folder. Every time a part of a torrent is downloaded mdworker will process it for searching with spotlight, unless the folder is specifically excluded. The mdworker process used to regularly sit there using nearly 100% of one of my cores before I figured that out... dropped my CPU temperature by about 10-15 degrees as well. Transmission has caused me no poblems since...

- colincornaby, on 06/24/2008, -10/+8According to my logs, the last iTunes crash on my 4 month old Mac Pro was... Oh. Never apparently.
- Aurabolt, on 06/24/2008, -9/+10Good thing you paid extra for that Mac or else you wouldn't get those crashes!
- mssk8r04, on 06/24/2008, -10/+7Definitely defrag/format your RAM.
Mine acted buggy after a power failure [PPC 1.42ghz mini.]
just back everything up, reformat [not quick format] and all should be well for a couple years.
Macs are great, not invincible.- texanut, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7You might want to try pulling out your hard drive chips and plugging them back in too.
- beastlykings, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5Don't forget to blow on them first!
- jediorange, on 06/24/2008, -0/+14de...fragment? RAM?
- psylence, on 06/24/2008, -0/+25I totally defragged my RAM last time I had issues. I also formatted my internets, that easily gave me 10-20 fps on bit torrent.
- LeviTheSmith, on 06/25/2008, -1/+3Best comment ever.
- sulaco252, on 06/25/2008, -3/+1I doubt it.

- batTUrd, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Wow, you have a ***** system or something... I get like 1-2 a year, and that's it.
- dlite922, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2I have XP,
My last crash was December 12th 2006 (I'm dead serious) due to Little sister downloading "games"
I've had one reinstall since that time. (no formatting mind you)
OS's work great if you leave them be. The problem usually lies between the keyboard and the chair.
I'll print a screen shot of my logs if you like.
- diggimator, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Adobe Flash causes Safari to crash often on my Intel Core Duo Mac, unlike on my PPC Mac. Never had iTunes crash on me before, so to me it sounds like Adobe is largely involved.
- hilo4321, on 06/25/2008, -7/+6i cant believe anyone uses itunes on any computer
- rednaxela825, on 06/25/2008, -5/+1I think your confusing iTunes with the iTunes Store. iTunes does a decent job managing my iPod, but I would never buy music from the iTunes Store.
- kecher, on 06/25/2008, -3/+1It looks like you have some bad RAM inside your machine man. Check it out..
You might also try to give it some stress test or two
http://www.coolbook.se/CPUTest.html
http://xbench.com/- AppleGeorge, on 06/25/2008, -1/+1xbench sucks. Use Geekbench.
- ogre2112, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2Or a bad hard drive, or an overheating CPU, or a flaky motherboard. I just love how everyone blames the RAM 99% of the time.
- kecher, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1You are right of course, that's why I suggested CPUTest stress tool. Only in my experience RAM is to blame in about 90 % of such situations. Bad HDD manifests it self differently, overheating CPU on the Mac usually shuts down the entire machine immediately. I have the problem of CPU fan not working currently on my MacBook so I know :) Motherboard is the next likely suspect.. I suggest stressing components separately to root out the actual problem.
- BonersMilloy, on 06/25/2008, -0/+0Guess what, then macs are build like ***** then, cuz they are all premade dumbass.
- BonersMilloy, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7I used a mac in school for graphic design, and flash, illustrator, photoshop, and basically everything would crash often. I lost many hours of work due to unstable OS
- poonaka, on 06/24/2008, -3/+26at least you don't get the beach ball...
