The Ultimate Sync - Coming Soon to a Mac Near You!
mydreamapp.com — This app could quite frankly replace all of the hodge-podge sync-related apps I've ever used. Truly powerful and beautifully simple. Imagine once the big time pros get a hold of it. Now it just needs enough votes to get made!!!

- digg it
- AnimaMaelstrom, on 10/12/2007, -40/+9The best for me is it will sync a lot of your applications without the individual app developers even having to do anything!
So you know, I'm new to digg so instead of burying me if I do something considered "wrong" just tell me and I'll work on it. Or I guess if you really have to, at least do both rather than just the bury.- cybergoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20cacoe,
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Especially as the digg summaries made it look like all of the contestants' applications were already in production. Gah, the contest went downhill after people started abusing digg. - AnimaMaelstrom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Admittedly looking back the title could have been better, but it specifically says in the summary "all it needs is enough votes to get made". Not exactly making you think it was already made.
I agree with your point though, I should have explained better or paid more attention to the "digg rules". Although being completely new to digg I think I shoulda been cut a bit of slack personally.
And how exactly did I ruin the contest??? I was a contributing forum user and gave the contestants a lot of feedback in helping to refine their ideas, probably more than you can say.
- cybergoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20cacoe,
- leucippus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3I found two other Digg posts about Portal today, and this one is in the lead with 9 diggs. The other two stalled at 6 and 3, respectively. Thanks for the gesture, but I don't think this one is taking off any time soon.
It'll all work out in the end. I had fun working on the idea, and I'll be getting a free Mac, so I'm not complaining, no matter what! :) - RickyB, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1If you vote for Portal, make sure you vote for Cookbook, too (you can vote for up to three apps!) It's another great app that will organize your kitchen and meals. Check it out at:
http://www.happylandfill.com/cookbook/ - ewcost, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Digg this and vote for Portal. If you have two or more machines you will want this app!!
- leucippus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Well, things worked out better than I had hoped!
Portal placed second in the My Dream App contest! 13 votes clear of Cookbook, and just 18 on top of Hijack. I'm in shock, really. Digg might have just saved my app!!- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6The same IP voted for same contenstant a lot of times in the end, suspious? ehh.
- AnimaMaelstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Regarding the same IP votes. They were removed. The qualifications for removal ended up being if over 50 votes came from the same IP, voted for the same app AND ONLY that app, they were removed. It was a big to-do in the forums there.
- adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4I have "Apple" removed from my preferred topics for a reason. Buried as wrong topic.
- CharlesSaint007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@animaMaelstrom (submitter)
Dude, where have you been for the past few weeks when these mydreamapp stories have been on the front page of digg? There's no way you entered that url without seeing multiple duplicate submissions. Stop trying to digg whore the system. Not to mention the contest is OVER! So not only did submit an obvious dupe, but you succeeded in giving us news that is obvious to any person who has already visited the site. Personally, I think that Whistler, blossom, and hijack should be the top 3.- CharlesSaint007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sorry submitter, I didn't see that this story is over a day old! My apologies regarding the contest being over. Still, i stand by my opinion that Blossom, Whistler, and Hijack should have won.
- AnimaMaelstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Honestly man, I didn't see any multiples when I entered that. I don't know if I'm blind but I didn't see any. I'll try to be more careful in the future. And thanks for the advice.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3There is already a product for this! A universal syncing server of sorts. Its call funambol
http://www.funambol.com/opensource/
They have clients for all sort of devices and OSes... but the best thing is that its a standardized XML formatting so you could potentially create a sync client for anything.- AnimaMaelstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll definitely check that one out. Never even remotely heard of it before and I've heard of a lot of syncing apps. Just none that remotely compared to the idea for Portal.
- AnimaMaelstrom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Umm, yeah... how exactly is that anything at all like Portal??? I checked it out and it's not even a tiny bit close. Wow... waste of my time. Purely for mobile computing / cell phones.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For cell phones and mobiles only?! There are clients for linux, windows and mac... for many email/pim clients.
- AnimaMaelstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ummm... "The Funambol project is intended for IT professionals looking to leverage the latest generation of mobile devices for email and PIM, or for developers who need to build, deploy and manage a mobile project..." That's straight from their front page.
Unless they've horribly misrepresented themselves on the front page of their site, you're wrong. It works with computers only in order to synchronize data on mobile devices as far as everything on that page says. So of course there are clients for linux, windows and mac. But it's still only in relation to syncing and enabling interaction (email/pim clients like you said) with your mobile device. It has nothing to do with syncing computers together, which is what Portal is all about!
- shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Quite ironic this story gets on the homepage AFTER the voting ended!
- thegreatsam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good.
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, The Contest is over :
"And the winners! These apps have fought their way through five grueling rounds of eliminations and the public has voted them the most compelling, most interesting, and most wanted.
Each of our winners will receive a MacBook and 15% royalties on their applications.
Third Place: Michael Yuan, Cookbook, with 6109 votes (17.88%)
Second Place: Farzad Sadjadi, Portal, with 6122 votes (17.92%)
First Place: Cameron Westland, Atmosphere, with 6566 votes (19.22%)"
So Cookbook, Portal and Atmosphere are being developped, I like all three. - dotpage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1how can people vote for the apps if they are not available for testing?
or are they?
I might be a blind idiot, but I could not find any apps anywhere.. - ivachen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1haven't we already agreed on bootcamp being the only dreamapp needed for mac?
- MattGrover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How can Portal be the "Ultimate Sync" when it *doesn't* sync phone's, PDA's etc??
Seems this just adds to "all of the hodge-podge sync-related apps" :/
