- sencha5, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6How about a time machine to 2 1/2 years ago, when blogging was relevant. Unless you're maybe 100 people in North America, blogging isn't for you. Dammit. Now I'm all outta Haterade.
- sencha5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4and I did it by time travel. boom.
- bloodmoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Don't know what you are talking about. There are a lot of good programming blogs out there.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Just incase anyone's unsure about this:
A blog is a publishing medium, not a publishing genre.
You download drivers from a blog, you look at comics on a blog, you watch videos on a blog - Even Digg itself is a blog.
If you don't like "blogs" ie websites with a browser accessible backend, perhaps you'd be better off with the newspaper. It's true a lot of people have used the 'blog' medium to rant about utter cod *****, the same way people have in the past used the newspaper's letters page (or editorial) to rant about utter cod *****, but I will repeat again for slow learners - A Blog is a publishing *medium* not a publishing *genre*.
- smackfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+101. Write something interesting.
...
21. Write something interesting.- JW00000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That article was just a load of crap. Just write interesting articles, and visitors will come. If everyone follows the guidelines of that blog post, I will soon have major troubles finding the few good blog posts among all those bad posts. If you write something interesting, people will automatically come, no need to push them into doing something.
I have experienced the same with my blog (which, for the sake of this comment, I will not link to): every time I wrote some tutorial or very specific thing, I got a lot of visitors, while when writing something too general only a few people read it. For some search queries, some of my articles are now within the first results of a Google search, because they help the people entering those search terms.
But there's no need in me to earn $50 a day, or to have people fainting if they see me, writing a blog post. I'm perfectly happy with a small blog, and I don't need any of those "How to make your blog popular without doing a thing" posts. If you're too lazy to write good content, I don't want to be subscribed to your RSS feed!

- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51. spam digg with something apple related
2. spam slashdot with something SCO related - xioner, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6I think the problem with this article is that he is assuming that the sole purpose in blogging is to make money or get thousands of readers.
While I wouldnt mind a little cash, I don't expect it at all, especially since wordpress doesnt allow advertising on blogs they host. As for readers, I hope to eventually get a lot... but my real reason for blogging is that I love music, books and computers, and I need an outlet for that love. Thats why I make at least one post a week, and try to do as many as my schedule allows.- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I started very small with http://johnbokma.com/ like 6 years ago. I added my first blog (not really public) by the end of 2000. A more public one in 2003, then nothing, then I started blogging in 2004, and restarted in 2005 after months of silence. Back then I was amazed with 2,000 daily visitors.
But because I kept adding content, my site grew from a few hundred visitors a day in 2003, to currently roughly 13,500 on weekdays, and about 12,000 in weekends. This already pays the rent, and some other costs :-)
If you want to make money with your blog: focus. Make a plan, watch your stats. Write content, your own. Don't copy paste the news with some witty remarks. Write content, your own. And keep going and make targets for the next months. I want 15,000 daily visitors on weekdays by the end of this year. And I work towards that target.
Ignore the people who say that blogging is old hat, or stupid. They probably would have said the same about the pixel advertiser :-)
As for hosting, you can start on a 20 USD/year (yes!) host + domain name. Moving to something more expensive is a piece of cake. My site, which is mainly a blog, has been paying it's hosting for years. - Irishlen20, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1I'm with you. I'm getting into blogs because it's fun to have instant readers for the things I write and be part of a little community of like-minded folk.

- nobledir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Great great article.
It is a good read for totally new bloggers.- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good article indeed, and certainly not limited to beginners. I am not a beginner, and I learned a few things ;-)
- sciencebase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could have done with this list when I started my regular news and views site in 1996 that eventually evolved into the Sciencebase blog - http://www.sciencebase.com/science-blog/index.php (Yes, I know the domain name was registered only in 1999, but the site existed elsewhere for three years before that)
- khasmoth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Nice article. Just wrote a blog on it on my SEO blog: http://everydayseo.blogspot.com/2006/10/hot-to-have-succesful-blog-launch.html
Really informative for bloggers. - martin77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"...don't fall in to the trap of thinking that anybody
is remotely interested in what you've written. " - AndyBeard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I digged it, but I don't agree with the initial comment. I don't think it is possible to make a comprehensive list in less than 50 points, and even then you should somehow prioritize the list with some kind of time-line.
My own post on the subject is here, which includes links to a few similar posts recently, as well as some of my own insights.

- johnpmathew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Hi
I have a blog (http://johnpmathew.blogspot.com) but don't know how to increase traffic. I get a measly 20 visitors a day and I guess that is not enough. I need more. Any suggestions?
John - wizardgold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a lot of great information for staring a new blog. I got my Wizardgold Betfair Trader Blog and podcast going recently and despite being an experienced blogger using Blogger.com for a couple of years, I missed out on some vital things when starting my new WordPress Blog.
On http://wizardgold.com/wordpress/ I am chronicling my experiences using betting software with Betfair. Trading, dutching and hedging. Very little if any, straight forward gambling.
Have to say though I was impressed with the content on the site I just dugg and will be using it more for my other blog sites - ipodwheels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool and useful. Things like this are a find. Can't wait to email this to some friends and have them digging this too...
- vangogh99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very good advice for old and new bloggers. Anyone who has a blog can probably learn something from this article to help make their blog better and bring more traffic to it as well as keep the readers who've already found them.

- SureFireGuy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Thanks for making these "surefire tips" available for the public. Do you think a blog would help out my SureFire flashlight store http://www.lumensflashlights.com ? I have a friend who has a blog on his photography website http://www.jgarnerphoto.com , but still don't understand how that could help his business. Thanks, Justin Ver Burg
