Bank of America to support Firefox, finally
networkworld.com — What? Bank of America doesn't already support Firefox? No, at least not officially. Mozilla calls the situation "pretty unusual" when talking about "most major Web sites, and certainly major banks." BoA says it will be adding Firefox to its list of officially approved browsers soon, although even that promise remains somewhat vague.

- kraetos, on 07/08/2008, -12/+82Failing to support Firefox and Safari - which, combined, now comprise 25% of the U.S. browser market - just wreaks of laziness and lack of respect for customers. Standard's based code isn't hard to write.
What makes even less sense is when Firefox supported but Safari (or any other standards-compliant browser) isn't. For all intensive purposes, they're the same. Enough with the over-zealous browser sniffers, already.- mikesbaker, on 07/09/2008, -7/+6way to have posted without reading the article. they support Safari and not Firefox but since Safari is a POS it doesn't work right. Also Safari and Firefox are not the same.
- Bobski, on 07/09/2008, -1/+60This story is asinine. I've been using Firefox to access BoA's website for years without a hitch.
WTF is the big deal?- darkspire, on 07/09/2008, -6/+4There are actually dozens of errors in the site that are only apparent when using Firefox.
- Bobski, on 07/09/2008, -2/+13@dark: So does that mean I now get to experience BoA's website exactly the same way IE users do? Oooooohhh... I can't wait!
- cmorriss, on 07/09/2008, -2/+13Same here. Have never had any problem whatsoever while using any version of firefox. This article is retarded.
- orangefly, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1the investments pages don't work right for me....
- imsoclever, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3Yeah, I've been using Firefox and Safari with BoA for about 3 years now. Never had a single problem.
- plainOldFool, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Been using FF exclusively for years and never had a single issue with bofa.com

- leamanc, on 07/09/2008, -1/+16No, you deserve a digg up. For those who don't get it, it's supposed to be "intents and purposes."
- mhuggins, on 07/09/2008, -3/+2I agree with his correction, but not the way he corrected the commenter. I don't see how being classy related to misspelling, really. I dugg up soupyc 3 comments down though.
- borez, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3And I dugg mhuggins up because he dugg soupyc's 3 comments down and leamanc's comment down because he dugg Onyxblaze's comments up and I dugg Onyxblaze's comment neither up or down because, to be honest , I was bored.

http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php - HigherLogic, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4I've never had a problem using BoA with Opera :) And Firefox doesn't have 29% of the market, we just had an article last week about it finally hitting 19% of the market. The site you're using is inflated.
- diggimator, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Firefox has 41% of the market

- Mavital, on 07/09/2008, -3/+0Well, at least I know how much of an idiot I am for thinking it was "intensive purposes". I blame public schools, the last five presidents, global warming, China, and organized religion for its failure in correcting these writing sins.
Thank you Digg, your grammar and spelling nerds have enlightened me, and taught me that I too can be a douche and correct others for their foolish use of "intensive purposes" and other grammatical errors..

- flashingcurser, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2I dugg you up. One thing though, safari and firefox aren't remotely related to one another. For all intents and purposes, Safari is the KDE desktop standard browser called Konquerer. I think the rendering engine is "khtml". Why do they feel the need to put "K" in front of everything?
- ThirdPrize, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Hey, I can't help it if I like sniffing browsers. It's a free country.
- tony23, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1"Failing to support Firefox and Safari - which, combined, now comprise 25% of the U.S. browser market - just wreaks of laziness and lack of respect for customers."
It is far more common than you may think. And what's worse is that when you actually try to tell them about it, you get ignored.
The real problem is the people in management don't know enough about alternate browsers, so they don't know to hire competent developers who can develop for those alternate browsers: http://www.patternsofchaos.net/blog/?p=17

This is what you see in FF3:

This is what you should be seeing:

- HigherLogic, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1It's not AdBlock because I don't have it installed. Shows up in every other browser though.
- mohtasham, on 07/09/2008, -2/+4They support Opera. I was able to open it using Opera.
- jschaff, on 07/09/2008, -6/+1View it as an IE page option in FF and you see everything that should be there. Every FF has the IE option built in it. What difference does it make if you have a true FF page or use the IE option?
- diggimator, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3How do you get to the IE option?
- benman587, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2I don't think FF comes with a built-in option to view pages in IE. But here's an addon that will do it:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/141 ... - zeabu, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4ieTab, it's not built in.

- josereyes0, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Yes I do...you.
- Kronk42583, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2i don't get it. ive using BoA online banking for years and i've never had a problem on my mac or PC. i never use IE, mostly FF and Safari. again. i've never had any problems. maybe its all the million ad block type plug ins that people run that can affect something, but it doesn't affect me.
- moo083, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3I will agree that the page you linked to doesn't work in FF3, but did you bother to check the main webpage to see if that page is even linked to? Nope. Because if you did, you most likely will not find it. I use FF3 and BofA several days a week and I have no issues at all. Its great we are getting official support, but it worked fine as is.
- DCGUY12, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1no
- y2kh8r, on 07/08/2008, -3/+6BofA isn't the most web-savvy bank ever- their site was featured in a lot of news items due to its lack of security a while back.
- techblogLAT, on 07/08/2008, -0/+158This is odd... I've been using Bank of America under both Safari and Firefox for a while now. Not sure why they never declared it official.
Funny, though, that they had an iPhone web app before official Firefox support.- pingpants, on 07/08/2008, -9/+1I've always used it on Firefox, too. But it has been ungainly.
- ogre2112, on 07/09/2008, -0/+11How so? I've been using it for at least a year. Probably 2.
- Caviarmy, on 07/09/2008, -2/+5"Mobile banking is not available in your state."
*****. - hellogoodbye, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5It's hardly an iPhone web app. The first page (with links to login, etc) is designed for the iPhone, but the actual pages that are useful, like viewing account info, look terrible.
- h0zae, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2spread firefox
- slstudios, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Same here. I've been using Firefox for my BofA online banking forever now. Never had a problem or knew it wasn't "officially" supported.
Odd.
- pingpants, on 07/08/2008, -9/+1I've always used it on Firefox, too. But it has been ungainly.
- IAskPeople, on 07/08/2008, -9/+3I don't like their security features and they don't support firefox
- TheNetFool, on 07/08/2008, -15/+3Gotta like BOA, it's a bout time they added some security support. Firefox is a bit rough of a browser on security though, I can't complain that they were looking out for the best interests of their clients.
- bmph8ter, on 07/08/2008, -10/+3I heard about this a while back; I actually USED to be a BOA customer. Oh well, there were other banks that wanted my $$$.
- mikesbaker, on 07/09/2008, -3/+11you left BOA because they don't offer support for one browser even though their online banking works with said browser? you have some serious free time on your hands to do that.
- MightyAphrodity, on 07/08/2008, -19/+19BofA sucks anyway, worst banking experience I ever had when I was a customer. They lost my deposit multiple times, hidden charges all over the place...just horrible!
- Bobski, on 07/09/2008, -2/+13Every time I have a problem I call customer support and the situation is handled promptly, and with respect.
I've more than once had what I considered unfair charges reversed simply because I complained.
That is a sure way to keep customers.- thedarkwolf, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3I hate all those crazy hidden charges. I don't bank with BoA, but I got hit with some stupid hidden fee with my bank. Then when I got the charge removed, the process they used t remove it charged me with another, higher fee. ***** them, time to find a new bank.
- slstudios, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I've been banking with them since '89. Total I've paid so far in fees: $0.
Are the fees hidden or do people just not read? It's not in the fine print.
It also helps if you don't overdraw your account or bounce checks.
- ralphodog, on 07/09/2008, -4/+12I agree with you. I switched to them because they're supposedly the best American bank to use while out of the country; but I've been hit with tons of hidden charges and charged exchange rates that weren't even close to the market rate. As soon as I finish getting my refunds I'm leaving them.
- flashingcurser, on 07/09/2008, -4/+3I don't know why you're getting dugg down, Bank of America sucks ass. They seem to be able to create imaginary fees out of thin air.
- Kronk42583, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4i've been a bank f america customer my whole life. i've never gotten hidden fees on anything. and i check my statements carefully. anyone have any examples?? or is it just that people love to complain about everything because its more fun to whine than to compliment.
- slstudios, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2i had a roommate who always complained about fees he was being charged by banks. of course he would always bounce check or overdraw his account constantly. he got really upset at the fees as if it were the bank's fault that hours were spent trying to reconcile something dumb he did.
- Bobski, on 07/09/2008, -2/+13Every time I have a problem I call customer support and the situation is handled promptly, and with respect.
- jetskidude911, on 07/08/2008, -4/+8Wow, I'm kind of shocked that a big bank like that didn't already support Firefox. Kind of odd.
- industryfinest, on 07/08/2008, -5/+2just as shocked as jetskidude911, I thought that they been supported firefox!!!! Great article.....
- mikesbaker, on 07/09/2008, -3/+37firefox has worked with BoA since v1. this article was a complete waste of internet space and to me is more about how safari blows.
- bubbazanetti, on 07/09/2008, -2/+4I agree.
- MellerTime, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I haven't had a problem with their site in Firefox until recently, but have had to switch to IE a couple of times in the last month or two to use it.
Also, a comment above shows an obviously wrong page in FF3, including screenshots, so there are problems, even if you've never run into them.
- mindsinker, on 07/09/2008, -1/+111been using boa + ff for years....no probs
- ohhoe, on 07/09/2008, -0/+20Me too, and I've never run into any problems at all.
At least not with the website... BoA on the other hand... - b3378x, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5I've also been using the BoA website on firefox for well over 2 years without any issues.
- gl77, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6i dont see what the issue is here, ive been using BoA and firefox for almost 3 years now, theres no problem for me. and there has been no problem since i have been using FF3 either. page loads fine for me, same as it always has.
- ohhoe, on 07/09/2008, -0/+20Me too, and I've never run into any problems at all.
- samard2002, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8You know what I find more odd? That Digg links the iPhone about twenty times a day, but Digg does not display properly in the iPhone browser. It has a bunch of garbage icons in the background. Is anyone at Digg aware of this?
- ohhoe, on 07/09/2008, -5/+3Are you aware that there is a digg application for the iphone so you can access it much easier?
- mb3581, on 07/09/2008, -1/+54I got an email from BoA just this morning saying someone had fraudulently used my card. They were so helpful by giving me a link right there in my email to enter my account number, pin number, passcode, mother's maiden name, email address and password,etc... I was so grateful that they caught this and saved me a bunch of money and heartache. Good think I checked my spam folder, stupid gmail almost got me in a heap of trouble.
- mohtasham, on 07/09/2008, -10/+1I got the same email, too. But the domain name part of the email wasn't bank of america. Obviously, it was from some bastard trying to steal my money.
- DrMonkeyLove, on 07/09/2008, -0/+10*Sigh*
- legendxx, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6*over head motion*
- itsthebrod, on 07/09/2008, -0/+15That really sucks! I must be having completely opposite luck than you, because I checked my mail this morning and apparently a foreign prince needs to transfer money to the US, but because he's foreign (and a billionaire prince), the banks won't do it! I promptly gave him my bank and life details. I also dropped out of college because hey, I'm a millionaire now!
- flashingcurser, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2So you got my email, sweet!
- mohtasham, on 07/09/2008, -10/+1I got the same email, too. But the domain name part of the email wasn't bank of america. Obviously, it was from some bastard trying to steal my money.
- daGUY, on 07/09/2008, -0/+9Why did they come out with an iPhone-optimized version of their site before they officially supported Firefox/Safari? iPhone is a much smaller platform.
On the other hand, I've been using accessing the site through Safari and Firefox for a while and have never had any problems. - ginestony, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5Actually Wells Fargo also just updated their online payment system for loans to work with firefox. I couldn't believe I had to switch over to IE every time I needed to make a payment. You'd think that they would make it as easy as possible for you to give them money... go figure.
- cagnew, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1I've never had a problem.
- pcwdigger, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8I've been using BoA's Web site for the past two years with Firefox.. never ever had one problem...

- pckbeta, on 07/09/2008, -5/+1HSBC ftw.
- nem0, on 07/09/2008, -4/+2Send me your bank account info and social security number and I will set up a Firefox friendly page for you ;-)
- whiteguysamurai, on 07/09/2008, -2/+8How is that possible, I've been using firefox to check my bank of America account for well over two years.
Am i missing something? - timothycrash01, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Great - now all we need is for MS Update to support it......That'll never happen.
- staeiou, on 07/09/2008, -1/+20All you people asking why you were able to access their site using Firefox: up until now, Bank of America had not listed Firefox as one of their supported browsers. Being unsupported does not that they blocked Firefox, but rather that they didn't guarantee that every aspect of the site would work with Firefox. That means if you were having web issues and called them up, they would ask if you are running a supported browser and refuse to help you until you do. Not anymore.
- itsthebrod, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3Still though, I've used it for years and never experienced any show-stopping errors that made me switch browsers... So really, this story is pointless (other than a great opportunity to rag on BoA for all their ***** fees).
- itspuddingtime, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Not anymore? They said it would be supported "soon" not right now. This could take months.
- miklem, on 07/09/2008, -3/+0btw, when will networkworld.com support Digg icons? I couldn't even find the Digg text link on that page.
- aircool00, on 07/09/2008, -2/+4I have bank of america and my account works fine
- JackTheRipper87, on 07/09/2008, -2/+5Weird. I've been logging into my Bank of America account with Firefox for over a year now. Not a single problem with any of the features...
- crownedgriffin, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3Wells Fargo doesn't support Opera, but Opera just automatically lies and says that it is IE by default. Everything works perfect.
- axis, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Some of the top level tabs in my account (like the Transfers tab) have never worked for me. I have to click a sub tab and then quickly click the top level tab before the page loads if I want to access that link. This has been true in all versions of FF, extensions or not.
- mikephimikephi, on 07/09/2008, -6/+1Switch to Commerce Bank.
- inotocracy, on 07/09/2008, -2/+5Um.. I've been using online banking with BofA for a few years now, and I always use Firefox. What exactly wasn't working?
- pagno, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Im moving to USAA soon anyway. Gotta love ATM refunds, since they dont have any machines of their own(except MAYBE in San Antonio).
- Typhoon2009, on 07/09/2008, -8/+4Bank of America is complete *****. ***** them all, I hope they tank. Some ***** piece of ***** whom I hope I find so I can slowly and painfully kill him stole my dad's identity some years ago, and hurt his credit score by fradulently opening an account with BofA. My dad got the account canceled, but ***** BofA never straightened out the issue with the credit reporting agencies so now his credit score is lower than it should be. ***** Bank of America and ***** the *****-mongling goat-***** lead-poisoned *****-cocker that stole his ID.
- itsthebrod, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5It's not BoA's responsibility to straighten it out with the credit agencies, it's your dad's.
- ThirdPrize, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4I just checked and *****-mongling-goat-*****-lead-poisoned-*****-cocker.com has been taken already. :(
