Exclusive Look: Digg Recommendation Engine Private Beta
readwriteweb.com — After months of promises (and third party tools), Digg finally announced that their recommendation engine is being released this week. Today, Digg has delivered the goods to private beta testers. Here are the first screenshots of the new digg recommendation engine features, along with a video guide.
- 793 diggs
- digg it
- mark076h, on 07/01/2008, -1/+19I guess i did not get into the beta, i figured they would let active users in :(
- sfrench, on 07/01/2008, -2/+22We are enabling the engine for sets of users which are chosen randomly. Look for it shortly.... you'll digg it.
- feshmania, on 07/02/2008, -1/+60i feel honored that a random system picked me. thank you seed generator
- Daniel591992, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7I never get picked!!!
- redneckblues, on 07/02/2008, -1/+13I will gladly accept digg's seed.
Wait... - Eric8p, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1yay for random systems!! I always get picked :D
- dsmx, on 07/02/2008, -3/+5I got in as well :)
- fuxxx, on 07/02/2008, -10/+0I got in =)
Bury me if I'm lying - killerofkiller, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2i got in also :)
- fuxxx, on 07/02/2008, -10/+0I got in =)
- NeoSporin, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3I got in and didn't even know until now!
- EdwardBella, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Yep, me too =]
- gbarberi, on 07/01/2008, -2/+7I'm waiting to get into the beta myself. I want to see how this recommendation engine is different than crawling over Friends' upcoming diggs in my profile - other than finding me new friends.
- gbarberi, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Scratch that comment. I just got access to the beta a little while ago. It's definitely useful and it looks like it *will* improve over time.
I'm definitely finding this easier than going through the queue or even through Friends' upcoming diggs. I don't care much for what the Digg team has made recently, but this tool is definitely their best creation.
- gbarberi, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Scratch that comment. I just got access to the beta a little while ago. It's definitely useful and it looks like it *will* improve over time.
- battleroyale24, on 07/01/2008, -4/+65I'm in the beta now
- Daniel591992, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Well... do you like it??
- KaiserArny, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1Mostly duplicate stories for me. maybe good for some, but I don't see myself using it much.
- Skab, on 07/02/2008, -4/+2yes but oddly enough oop my friends have the same digg stories as i do WOW. great NEW system.
- devin_mm, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1I am as well
- FENWAYFREAK, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4I am in but i am not connected very well with anyone (low percentages)
- qwertydvorak, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2my % is 34, 5, 2, and the rest are 1%. nobody is compatible with me.
- Karmavs, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Mine are higher: 51%, 21, 21, 11, 8, 7, 6, 6, 5…
- HonoredMule, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1My highest percentage is 12 (lowest is 11) and no digger matches are presented, but the article matches are still fairly decent. Most look interesting/important enough to check out, and only a few are duplicates of stuff I've already dugg. None strike me as actually being far outside my realm of interest. I don't have time to browse through a bunch of articles right now, but it looks promising.
- Halukard, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1In too.
- Seidoger, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Omg, i want your autograph!
- redneckblues, on 07/02/2008, -2/+4Me too, in fact it's how I found this story. *****
- jedisushi, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1Me too. Nice.
- ReCkLeSsX, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1Yeah, I got in, too.
Mostly just average connections with other people. The highest I have is 28%, which isn't bad but I wish it were a little higher.- , on 07/02/2008, -0/+034% is the highest compatibility for me. It's recommending a ton of stories from one particular user though (only 6% compatibility).
- Daniel591992, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Well... do you like it??
- Ducttape38, on 07/01/2008, -1/+14Really interesting interview with Anton Kast, the lead scientist. Didn't really realize how complicated the engine was until hearing him explain about the design and challenge of it all.
Props to the Digg team, I'm loving the engine already. - NathanCH, on 07/01/2008, -2/+12I hope people like me like me.
- bs0l, on 07/01/2008, -2/+26I have it! WOOO
- YesImAChick, on 07/01/2008, -3/+22The Recommendation Engine is awesome. I'm aDiggted. (I've been waiting to use that for so long)
- Karmavs, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2I'd have waited longer.
Much longer.
- Karmavs, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2I'd have waited longer.
- cyberpope, on 07/02/2008, -1/+9This story was recommended to me, so far everything I've seen has been very nifty.
- MikeSetera, on 07/02/2008, -2/+31I've got it and it's freakin awesome! :D
- Reaper2806, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2It's a good system. Suprised I got in! All those hours at work spent digging have paid off!
- Atomic1fire, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2NDA
Just Kiddin
The recommendation engine looks pretty good so far - borez, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1Already live.
- cjflashman, on 07/02/2008, -3/+20SWEET!
I have it!
Wow, this honestly somewhat struck me at random.
But from what I see- It sure does elminate a LOT of spam and Fail Submissions.
You guys will love it! - imbob, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3i don't have it, i guess I'm not that special :(
- boneill428, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Soon enough Bob
- wonderbriefs, on 07/02/2008, -6/+1Does everyone have the beta now or am I special?
- yayintertubes, on 07/02/2008, -2/+11It's still private? I guess thanks for letting me in! *feels special*
- saucedmike, on 07/02/2008, -2/+4It's not really exclusive if there are thousands of people able to see it.
- DjArcadian, on 07/02/2008, -8/+2I have it. So far none of the recommended stories interest me. FAIL!
- zephc, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5I had just two stories in there for a while, both of which I buried, but now there are a lot more, and they really do seem, more or less, interesting to me (lots of tech stories - surprise surprise!) I just worry that it will narrow the stories that people see when looking for new, not-front-page stuff. I love that the front page has such a hodge-podge of stories.
- ufia, on 07/02/2008, -5/+4As a beta tester I would like to report a bug with the pixels, the shadows are all wrong.
- Rizin, on 07/02/2008, -4/+2I'm in the beta guess its a random thing.
Now for the WoTLK Beta.. - AZRoboto, on 07/02/2008, -7/+1McCain was for the Enron loophole???
- afidler, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13I've got it.
So far, I'm loving this new feature! It's kind of rejuvenated my interest in going through upcoming stuff. It's, so far, pretty accurate as far as listing submissions that I'd be interested in, and because of that I've found a lot of stuff that I probably would have missed anyways.
I think this was one of the best moves on Digg's part I could have asked for.- Daniel591992, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4Now they have to work on the spam shouts and friend system. The homepage is run by people with tons of "friends". It's become absurd recently.
Just look at what the person that submitted this story shouted to 18 people: "reshouting, as this is really starting to pick up some steam. please digg and shout. will digg your stuff in return. :)" Digg is being abused by spammers looking to make money or boast their ego.
Does anyone think the new recommendation engine will help increase the diversity of users that make it to the front page? I'd love to know what a staff member has to say about this issue.- Thrilltone, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2Thank you. I hate that about this system. Stories should be chosen on merit, not on how talented the submitter is at networking and spamming.
Having administrators pick out the cream of the crop stories isn't a perfect solution but better stories might end up being showcased.
- Thrilltone, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2Thank you. I hate that about this system. Stories should be chosen on merit, not on how talented the submitter is at networking and spamming.

- Julz, on 07/02/2008, -4/+2no way i got a invite! i guess it helps being a member since 2005
- Me1000, on 07/02/2008, -3/+2K. Rose, I dont use ad block for digg because I want to support you, (and because I use safari)
Make your random seed generator pick me!- SRSco, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1Use this to pay him back: http://safariadblock.sourceforge.net/
- SupaDawg, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3I'm in the beta. It's not bad actually. I'm very impressed in the results so far.
- arcticblue, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I also am very impressed. I also love the fact that they added upcoming recommendations to the front page. This should really help alot!
PS: I can't wait to see how the top submitters somehow cry about this.
- arcticblue, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I also am very impressed. I also love the fact that they added upcoming recommendations to the front page. This should really help alot!
- SRSco, on 07/02/2008, -3/+5I had to wait like 4 weeks after everybody else on earth had IMAP Gmail. Even my sisters who had zero need for IMAP got it the first day. It's great to finally be included on a first round of something like this.
- slimscane, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1Apparently the person closest to my taste resemble me... 9%! I probably just don't digg enough stories. I blame myself. =(
- SupaDawg, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I digg a lot and comment even more often and my highest is 13%. so don't feel bad.
- domokunt, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Mine is 15%
- mike7899, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1I have been chosen as a beta member. I am better than you. It feels good.
- Marlorn, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1yay i have it
sounds more and more like an online dating service...
...not that i would know. - PainToad, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1Wait wasn't Web 2.0 meant to follow the KISS theory?
- Thrilltone, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1I've been hitting the Recommendations this afternoon.
The only thing I commented on in my Beta choices that rose to the 'standard' Most Recent, so far, is the 2 year old skateboarder.
The recommendations don't seem especially enticing so far but it's too soon for me to judge their value.
Here's a screenshot of right now
http://nonsai.com/pics/betad.jpg - frenchkick, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2its not bad
my first recommendation was about TF2
and i love me some TF2
good job so far - DarkReign16, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1I noticed this earlier today, and wondered why there was no story about it, but now I know, it's because it's private, and I am in it, along with a handful of other diggers. Woot!
- SniperZ, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1So far, it hasn't recommended much that I would be interested in, but its still beta and private...
- koenigje, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1How is it an exclusive look when we can all look at it?
- coheedcollapse, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Woah. I didn't know it was private because it just randomly showed up. I was confused about my first recommendation though. I have literally been against digging crap just because there's a hot girl in it from the beginning and the first thing that they told me to digg was a video of some chick dancing in purple underwear.
- securityxpert, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1yeah I got that too
- fishie, on 07/02/2008, -4/+1this guy has a crazy lisp. ugh.
- jakerudy7, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3dude! im in beta and i think its great. no more having to look through the millions of crappy stories with 1 digg
- SheilaNoya, on 07/02/2008, -5/+2This is really strange. I don't think I want to see percentages and statistics on who Diggs my stuff and who I'm most likely to resemble. It's kinda creepy.
Maybe this 420 is just making me paranoid, but now I feel like Big Brother is tracking every move I make (and everyone else's too).
OK - I'm willing to give this a shot, but I'd be just as happy if it flopped and went back to the OLD Digg (for now). - Notyavgkat, on 07/02/2008, -3/+1me gotz it
- HCviolence, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4For some reason I have this(not that I'm complaining). It really allows me to digg things that I otherwise might have missed and completely personalizes what stories I want to see more so then customization and categories would.
- UltamateAddict, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1I have it and I'll give ya guys some pros and cons.
Pros: It does get more stories prone to your liking.
It has a nice interface.
Cons: Not many people are above 50% compatible so the stories aren't always what you would like. I dugg one story about the rodgers iphone thing and my number one compatible person is a guy that dugg like 10 stories about it.
I don't like the new digg interface as in the regular one, i like the recommendation interface though, but the one they released a couple of days ago sucks - Cargo8, on 07/02/2008, -5/+3Digg this if you got the Beta!!!!! Woo!
- cadmiumpaint, on 07/02/2008, -4/+1I got the beta as well. bfd.
i'm the farthest thing away from a typical digg user...i guess they want to suck me in..
so they want to help us network with each other better so we generate more clicks for advertisers...nice.
maybe they can get the "search digg" function to be accurate..i can never find anything relevant on there. - MarianaPeyton, on 07/02/2008, -1/+0I've got the beta. Nice job, Digg Team.
- thepeelman, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2I've never really been an active digger. These new features are certainly a nice motivator to start. If the recommendations are good enough, maybe I'll be able to abandon my RSS feed of which a lot of articles are not for me.
- dunktim, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5I want to get into the beta!
- Thrilltone, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1The Beta Recommendations served me a dud dupe thread for the Starbucks story:
http://digg.com/business_finance/Starbucks_to_cut_ ...
They also gave me a football story and I have football unchecked.- Thrilltone, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4My apologies to the Beta Engine. Football was still checked. I fixed it. Being a Dolphin fan will cure anyone of enjoying the NFL. NBA and Olympics are my favorite sports.
- LeRenard, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5So far its awesome, I've been finding diggs from it I like better than the usual front page stuff.
- seandfeeney, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Once you use the recommendation engine you can never go back!
