Gmail For Mobile Launches Today
techcrunch.com — Gmail for Mobile, a downloadable gmail application for java-enabled phones, launches this morning at 5 AM PST. Previously, users were only able to access gmail via a mobile browser. But for java-enabled phones, using the Gmail for Mobile application will significantly speed email use.

- Deep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I downloaded it, it's pretty sleek and cool. Nice interface and I love the shortcuts.
- aeproberts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I just tried it as well, and it is really well done. I have a blackberry and I would say that the email on it is almost perfect but it did not allow me access to my archive.
Thanks to google for solving this. Now if only they would release a sync program to sync my calendar with my blckberry - tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Sorry, the Gmail application does not work on your Samsung SPH-A840. However, you can access Gmail on the go by using the web version [link]."

So basically I'm still without mobile gmail. Poop. - phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yuss! works on my POS sanyo. I like the way it's done, really nice to use
uh oh, I got a NullPointerException! - phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh, if you're on some sort of data plan, check out how much it uses... and watch out if your data is expensive.
- rezonq3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@phatvolvo
Uh, by POS Sanyo I hope you mean it's a POS because you beat the crap out of it...
Sanyo is hailed as one of the top cell phone manufacturers in the business. Many who have been in the business of cell phones for years would say they are the best (most reliable).
I will subject to the argument that they are not very feature packed, but POS, that is a stretch. - rickspencer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had some trouble at first with my Samsung A920, but I went to the URL http://mobile.google.com and it detected my phone. I was then able to download Maps, and Gmail and they both work beautifully. My phone supports EVDO so I'm sure that's a big part of "beautifully."
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@tzmguitarist
I have a Samsung with Tmobile as well, and am also disappointed that T-Mobile denies network access to any Java apps that have not been signed by T-Mobile. That means no IM clients, no Google Maps. no GMail mobile, no Opera Mini.
However, you can get to gmail's mobile web interface by using your phone's browser (assuming you have the $6/mo data service or more):
http://m.gmail.com - wisam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Here's the real file, the files that "desired" posted just redirect to this file
http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar
Downloaded it and installed it on my w810i. It starts fine but doesn't seem to connect.
Entered the username and password and is still "Loading" for like 10 mins now.
Going to http://gmail.com/app through Opera didn't work for my w810i. Got the message:
Gmail
Sorry, the Gmail application does not work on your phone. However, you can access Gmail on the go by using the web version.
Don't use Opera, use the supplied browser. - supamonke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@aeproberts

syncs google calendar to blackberry's
curious tho, why use google mobile instead of the blackberry's own email? - phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@rezong3... nah, it's a good phone, but it's a bit big, and a few years old, and I didn't expect it to work...
I take it all back!
- aeproberts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I just tried it as well, and it is really well done. I have a blackberry and I would say that the email on it is almost perfect but it did not allow me access to my archive.
- billygreen23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You have to search to access your archive.
- afsina, on 10/12/2007, -28/+1don't dig this link, because the related link has wrong image of the application and wrong links in it. there is a better article , digg that. http://digg.com/tech_news/New_Official_Gmail_Mobile_App
- converge, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14Reported yours as a dupe.
- unversed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Saved me the trouble of finding your link and Digging it down. Thanks!
- coit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Here's a direct link that will install the application on your phone. Worked for my Treo 700p.
http://www.gmail.com/app- zixxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i gotta get java sorted out on my 700p, i installed it but i didnt really want to use an sd card for this.
- rabbitt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Damn I wish I had bought the 700p instead of wasting my time on the 700w :-/
- OnlyShawn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0...can't see how this could possibly be better than chatteremail, if you're on a treo.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can easily get Java on the 700w... check out the ibm jvm
- uncle_jesse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If only T-Mobile would release a java jre for my MDA :-( Google - care to push any buttons on the T-Mobile front????
- jonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the default web session won't work with it on t-mobile anyways :-/ you need an unlocked phone to set it up properly.

- ImOscar, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Gmail is down, must be the digg effect from this story
- flake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not down here
- ImOscar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's back. It was down for me for like an hour today. First time in long time.
- paulstringer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm getting links ok when I login at gmail.google.com but I get a 404 when linking to the App. This is over in Europe where I guess it isn't ready yet. The URL of the 404 seems real enough www.gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/nl/gm-Motorola-V1050.jad. Can anyone with a successful download post a link so us Europeans can give it a shot. Someone with a Razr who got it to work would be ideal.
- jonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i had a problem getting to it (with the 404 error) via opera mobile. seems you need to use an actual WAP browser, like your phone's built in.
- Odjur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just loaded it on my Blackberry 7250 and it worked like a charm. Very clean interface. Now that my work and personal email are all on my Blackberry I never need to sit at a computer again! (i will)
- motionb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea, me too, this is great
- kee440, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*Waiting for UK Version for a V3 Slvr*
- Smurffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As jonj said, you cannot use Opera Mini to download the gmail file, apparently Google cannot recognize what type of phone you have through Opera's browser. Use the one supplied to you by your provider/phone.
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=50425&topic=10085
Check that page out to see what phones are compatible.- flake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet, opera was definitely killing it for me on my sph-880
- JonRick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used Opera and it worked just fine.
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4damn verizon and their use of brew.
i wish i still have my moto e815...i'd load the alltel firmware in a heartbeat to be able to use this..
unfortunately...i'm stuck with "choclate" until the vzw customer council hands out new phones or my ne2 rolls around in april. - shredomatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This works awesome on my Cingular 8125. Very quick and snappy.
Now if only they would make Google calendar sync with my phone..- Hardcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ditto that - way better than the web interface. And with the new 1.47 radio ROM, I can actually get my email from inside this steel and concrete dungeon of a building where I work!
- Applied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was excited to see this, but didn't really see the point. The web one works really well on my 8125. Although this is good to see attachments.
I'm with you though, if they got my gcal to sync with my phones outlook without jumping through hoops, I'd be ecstatic...maybe there's an app out there to display a feed of ical on the today page that sync's up when connected? - JonRick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, same here. Calendar and contacts.
- artvigil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey How did you get your 8125 to work with gmail mobile. I'm getting a java.lang.illegal error. HELP
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's too bad T-mobile hates java apps. Or at least it seems that way, because they tend to lock up all the settings on Samsung phones so that it's impossible to let a Java app access the internet.
- Rousterfar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Already downloaded it and it works really well. I have the SERO plan under Sprint and I love being able to check my email on the road for free. The magic of a program like this is it works really well for non smart phones like my Samsung A900.
- *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, trying to use it on my Sony Ericsson W800i here in the UK. It detects my phone and downloads the US/Canada version for some reason. When the app tries to access the internet it says 'This program requires a working data connection. Please check your signal strength' My data connection is fine...
- colinm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see the same thing on a SE K750i O2 (UK) PAYG and via J2ME emulator on my PC. Maybe my GMail account is flagged as non-US/Canada?
- colinm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've worked out how to fix this: Log into GMail on your PC, Click "Settings" (top right), Change "Google Mail display language" from "English (UK)" to "English (US)" and click "Save changes".
- cheez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1doesn't work on my s710a
- kevin45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't use it on Treo 700w. What gives? I just got the damn thing too. Installed IBM JVM J9 runtime... jar/jad files still unrecognized.
- Goatweed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I keep getting a 404 when I use my VZW VX8100, but I'm guessing i wont be able to use this anyway. Sigh.
- mdweezer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmmm hopefully a fix or someone figures out how to get this running on a Treo 650. It would be AMAZING.
I'm also waiting for them add Bluetooth GPS support to the Palm version of Google Maps.
Go Google Go!- OnlyShawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0chatter, man...chatter. or at least just pull your gmail down with versamail...what's this got that those don't?
- mdweezer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I won't have to setup pop and figure out what's downloaded through my POP activated gmail account and what not. I can archiive things and have it be in sync when I visit the web version on something other than my phone.
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you have to manually check for new messages?
or can you set it to check every couple of minutes?- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Polling for new messages would get very expensive very quickly.
- kman2k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I get the "does not work with you phone" error page on my Samsung A900; the same phone as the reviewer. What gives?
- kbro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I downloaded it and am running it fine on my Samsung A900 (Sprint). Very nice.
I also downloaded the Google maps app. It is very very sweet.
I used the standard browser and navigated to http://mobile.google.com, then selected to download and run.
Sorry you are having issues, but the problem is not with the Samsung A900 model.
- kbro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I downloaded it and am running it fine on my Samsung A900 (Sprint). Very nice.
- Sokkermick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice app, but on my Blackberry its worthless. The app must be refreshed for email to show up.
- mozami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ive been waiting for this one.. its been about time
Downloaded it on my nokia E61, works like a charm using both wifi and 3G here in South Africa... - lerhaupt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Using it on Sprint/Samsung A920. Once installed, you have to go to Menu -> My Content -> IM & Email -> Gmail just to get to it. If it installed under "Applications" instead of "IM & Email" I'd at least be able to get to it with 2 clicks instead of 4. Thanks google for the products but stupid cell phone design strikes again.
- MrAction408, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just put the app in your favorites or set a directional key for one button press.
- lerhaupt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here are the steps for the Samsung a920 for getting it to install under Applications so you can reach it from your Favorites.
1. Download gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar onto your computer.
2. Goto rumkin.com/tools/sprint/
3. Under "Upload java midlets" enter your phone number, the jar file from step 1 and select "Applications" as the folder.
4. Wait for rumkin to send you a text message. Click Go on the text message.
5. Install the app. It will go under Applications which you can get to from your Favorites.
- vcleniuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Mmmmm... Java+Google+Email = JoogleMail or Javle-mail
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Sorry, the Gmail application does not work on your Samsung SPH-A680."
So I guess all those "Java Powered" splash logos that appear when I start up any number of my apps were all lies. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't work on my Samsung A660 :(
It gives me the error: "No such method setFullScr"... I didn't like this phone before and now I dislike it more... - desired, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A few direct links if you can't download it from the network:

- MihaiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks a lot. This is how I got the Nokia version for my Nokia 6131, which has full screen and better functionality over the generic version.
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1blah blah blah... Where's the mobile browser version of GCal?
- Blackflip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can somebody please post the actual files somewhere? i live in Europe, and the Site doesnt show any downloadable file. Thanks
- somebitches, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah same problem, ***** google retards
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here's the jar file that all java-enabled mobiles are directed to
http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar
Download it to your PC, transfer it to you mobile and install it.
This way you save some pennies you would have spent downloading through you mobile.
- weprin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works great on my Motorola V551. Didn't think it would run, since my phone is kinda old and cheap... but it runs fine!
Now... if only I could type in my password (I have non-ascii characters... and no way to type them on the phone pad).- numarc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea i have the crappy v220 and it works excellent.
- dengzhi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gmail for nds lite would be cool
- fjvwing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Alas, not for GMail hosted domains. Better stay using the mobile web browser for that. And POP is not useful either, since 'Leave on Server' does not work so you can view your email from both your mobile and PC.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a Samsung I730 with Verizon and this doesn't work. Damn phone does everything but make coffee and run JAVA, pisses me off.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If anyone cares I managed to get it to work on my 730 by following these directions: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsung-i730-i830-i830w/59668-http-mobile-google-com-local-2.html#post584596
- GCovington, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a unlocked Treo 650. I had some difficulty installing the program initially. I had to first go to the palm website and download a java client to install the Gmail app. After a small run around I got it to work. So far I like it, it has a low resolution when viewing jpegs with it though.
- pbooker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can confirm it works on a Razr V3c up in the great white north.
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wish it worked on my alltel Razr V3C
"ERROR: GMail is not supported on your device"
couldn't install opera browser either. damn locking down cell phones
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wish it worked on my alltel Razr V3C
- paulstringer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More linkage for Motorola
http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gm-Motorola-V3.jad - jangarcia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome! works great on my Nokia 6682
- mlock2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works perfectly on my samsung MM-A920. Nice interface.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Data Error 905 / Attribute Mismatch
:( - poutine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0A similar product that supports all email accounts rather than just Gmail is MovaMail
(http://www.getjar.com/products/6977/MovaMailV2). I've been using it for a bit with my IMAP account and really like it on my k750. Tried the Gmail app and couldn't get it to work, says something about my phone not supporting the certificate. - OutKast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1works on my blackberry 7250
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was able to download and install this on my Motorola V635. It detected my phone just fine. I launch it and I can enter in my username and password... but the [Exit] and [Sign in] buttons don't work. Kind of a deal-breaker there. :(
- averagemario, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was able to get it on my French Moto RAZR V3x by replacing the "fr" with "en" in the url when the 404 came up.
- torri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/gm-Sony_Ericsson-K800i.jad
does anybody get anything else than a 404 here? i am from europe maybe thats the problem. if you can get the file please dump it somewhere - thanks!- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gm-Sony_Ericsson-K800i.jad

- JesseH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow works great on my Blackbery 8700 from Tmobile. Works just like the regular browser version even loads your contacts!!!
- jsumner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone able to get it to work on their Windows Mobile device. I have the TMobile MDA to be exact.
- Phantom76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does work very well with the built in MIDLET manager.
- jsumner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excuse my ignorance.... where is the built in midlet manager.
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.digg.com/software/How_to_Get_Gmail_Mobile_For_Your_T_Mobile_MDA_and_Similar_Phones
- Neploxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works fine on LG CU500, Cingular, though I've done the workaround to disable the endless net access confirmation message. Disappointed to note it only opens links in the default browser and has no option to use Opera mobile
- wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so pretty on my Nokia e60. edit: it does "remember my 8 character password that takes 5 minutes to type on a phone if it has special characters" feature.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I get a 500 internal server error if I try it with my hosted domain account. Doh :(.
