Google Experimental Search
google.com — This experiment lets you influence your search experience by adding, moving, and removing search results. When you search for the same keywords again, you'll continue to see those changes. I don't like it!.
- 951 diggs
- digg it
- Barbosa, on 01/20/2008, -0/+55I think it sounds like a useful addition for me. I repeat searches a lot and I would like the chance to move the search results around. And If you want you can easily go back to unaltered search results.
- rpi22, on 01/20/2008, -6/+77Hmmm... where have i seen this before?
- brooklynzoo, on 01/20/2008, -9/+24mmmm reddit?
- wiifm69, on 01/20/2008, -2/+22mmmmm digg a few months ago...
- Atomic1fire, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1something like aftervote.com?
- cleverboy, on 01/20/2008, -5/+8Mmm. Hey, can I prevent Digg from showing me results from Gizmodo? That'd be cool.
- maexus, on 01/20/2008, -3/+3-site:gizmodo.com ?
- my10cent, on 01/20/2008, -2/+0Hitler's Germany 1939?
- lloydruberus, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Go away Godwin
- Spectre74, on 01/20/2008, -15/+4All future orange asterisk sites are belong to Google ads.
- flarn2006, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1All your base are belong to Google ads.
- Spectre74, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1That's what you get for talking about serious issues childishly.
- flarn2006, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1All your base are belong to Google ads.
- Slices, on 01/20/2008, -20/+3so finally, google is going 2.0 :-D
- kbeeveer46, on 01/20/2008, -0/+93So there's finally a way to remove Experts Exchange from the list of results??? I swear, that thing shows up on the first page for any technical question I have.
- CitizenX10, on 01/20/2008, -0/+17Same here. It seems like every problem I have they have an alleged answer to. Does anyone know if they really work or a waste of money?
- capiCrimm, on 01/20/2008, -0/+15They just game google so they can get on top, but it's like any old forum. You can find any info they have for free somewhere else.
- Numbski, on 01/20/2008, -0/+16..or just view source. They just use css/javascript to mask the answers, but the answers are right there in the page's sourcecode. :P
- JoaoPe, on 01/20/2008, -0/+8Thanks for the info. I've never realize that!
- expert01, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1n/m
- cisox, on 01/20/2008, -0/+11Or view the Google Cached Results which have the answers visible at the bottom.
- snoozevmw, on 01/20/2008, -1/+2I believe the answer is always at the bottom of the page, you just have to scroll through all of the crap
- tecmec, on 01/20/2008, -1/+5used to be, but not any more
- cornelius1, on 01/21/2008, -0/+0I don't know how the site looks there, but here the answers are still always visible (viewing with Firefox 2.0.11). They are at the bottom below Experts Exchange Zones.
- Numbski, on 01/20/2008, -0/+16..or just view source. They just use css/javascript to mask the answers, but the answers are right there in the page's sourcecode. :P
- Bando, on 01/20/2008, -0/+9Or block cookies.
I added this to my exception list(block):
www.experts-exchange.com*
Also make sure you delete existing cookies from them. Then scroll to the bottom of the page for answers. - wolfing, on 01/20/2008, -3/+2You can do what others have said to see results, but the site is very good indeed, I am a subscriber and the answers there are very accurate, and if you have a problem to which you can't google an answer, post it there and it's almost guaranteed you'll have a solution within hours.
- unusualbob, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Just use google cached results to see the answers at the bottom.
- capiCrimm, on 01/20/2008, -0/+15They just game google so they can get on top, but it's like any old forum. You can find any info they have for free somewhere else.
- Darkhacker, on 01/20/2008, -17/+6What's wrong with Experts Exchange? They've saved my ass plenty of times. Just scroll down and you'll see posts with answers.
- ermau, on 01/20/2008, -1/+12Not anymore..
- ragingradish, on 01/20/2008, -1/+4It still works with FF 3.0b2
- maexus, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Yea, I just use google cache and it works
- flarn2006, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2You can disable Experts Exchange cookies and they will appear again.
- Darkhacker, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Why am I being burried without any logical explanation. Am I the only one who has found Experts Exchange helpful?
- HighTechGeek, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1You are getting dugg down because this is digg. Most of the kids on this site have generic problems that 1000s of other noobs have and they can simply Google the answer for free. They don't understand the concept of EE (which is completely free, btw, as long as you contribute to the site). EE is good for getting answers to unique problems.
- ermau, on 01/20/2008, -1/+12Not anymore..
- Jon211, on 01/20/2008, -0/+18Or just put -"experts-exchange" in your search
- Awspire, on 01/20/2008, -0/+8or click "Cached" on the Google link to reveal their discussion.
- Barleyman, on 01/20/2008, -1/+3or just keep scrolling down to the bottom. They have all the answers displayed. The would be blacklisted from Google if they did not.
- tecmec, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3they used to. but not anymore.
- Barleyman, on 01/20/2008, -1/+3or just keep scrolling down to the bottom. They have all the answers displayed. The would be blacklisted from Google if they did not.
- capiCrimm, on 01/20/2008, -1/+21how am I supposed to get my info about expert sex change's then?
- Awspire, on 01/20/2008, -0/+8or click "Cached" on the Google link to reveal their discussion.
- BaroqueW, on 01/20/2008, -4/+12actually if you use the "cached" function of google, you can see the answers.
Then Experts Exchange becomes very useful :)- jstohler, on 01/20/2008, -0/+6Why isn't this considered black-hatting by EE? They're showing a different page to the search engines than they are to readers, which is a clear Google terms violations.
- dood, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5I've been reporting the results when I see 'em. Maybe we're not noisy enough yet.
- jstohler, on 01/20/2008, -0/+6Why isn't this considered black-hatting by EE? They're showing a different page to the search engines than they are to readers, which is a clear Google terms violations.
- mtvkilledusall, on 01/20/2008, -4/+9I have to agree... using the cached view of the page and scrolling to the bottom of the experts exchange page you can see the answers. Yes, it has helped me on occasion. I don't know why the guy above me is getting dugg down. Probably by people who think they know every answer to every technology question.
- KoZo, on 01/20/2008, -4/+4Hey, Experts Exchange is quite useful although I don't have an account on that one, just use Google cached to view their answers.
- smackhero, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3that's not the point. the information on EE is usually freely available elsewhere, and you don't have to jump through any hoops to get it. it's just annoying that they are the top results when you have to either look at the google cached version, or disable CSS/look at the source.
- mynameisjody, on 01/20/2008, -2/+3Seriously, Scroll down. Don't stop at the blurred out answers, or at the spam looking part...keep going...ok, NOW do you see the answers? Maybe they should do an article on how to view the answers on their site :-P
- flarn2006, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4The blurred out answers are "encrypted" with ROT13.
- NotOptium, on 01/20/2008, -2/+5Can I block anything from about.com too?
- Jawsh91, on 01/20/2008, -2/+6expert sexchange
:) - 80hd, on 01/20/2008, -1/+3now EE is just going to have to find a new way to cheat to the top.....
- smackhero, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3i really wish google would maintain two separate indexes--one commercial, one non-commercial. that way you search one index if you are looking for information/doing research, and another if you are trying to buy something online. the implementation of .org/.com domains has pretty much been much been completely botched up by InterNIC, so this would be the next best thing.
- donkeySays, on 01/20/2008, -1/+2What about About?
- unusualbob, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Use the cached results to see anything from those pages. The answers to the question are at the bottom.
- CitizenX10, on 01/20/2008, -0/+17Same here. It seems like every problem I have they have an alleged answer to. Does anyone know if they really work or a waste of money?
- corevette, on 01/20/2008, -2/+44so...i went to the site, what now
- SigmundFreud, on 01/20/2008, -3/+5You need to go to http://www.google.com/experimental/ and select 'join experiment', that's all. It works quite well, actually.
- MarkTaiwan, on 01/20/2008, -2/+13i didn't see the experiment... maybe it's only in US... :-(
- epohs, on 01/20/2008, -0/+11I'm in the US and I don't see this option listed either. I see:
- Alternate views for search results
- Keyword suggestions
- Keyboard shortcuts
- Left-hand search navigation
- Right-hand contextual search navigation- akumal999, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1sucks to be us
- SysstemLord, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3We all know Google, they don't release their new services to everybody all at once.

- bianconeri4ever, on 01/20/2008, -3/+14Hmmm taking a page from Mahalo's book...about time...this will crush Mahalo :(
- ioannusdeverani, on 01/20/2008, -0/+8Mahalo really has nothing to crush.
- cafefort, on 01/20/2008, -12/+14Where have you been guys? This is SOooO! Old ! :)
- JacobParker, on 01/20/2008, -5/+1yep.
- Pardis, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5so because it is old and some people may not have see it, it should not be posted? by that thought movies should only be played one day, and no more reruns on tv. because people have seen them
- Speedy7, on 01/20/2008, -41/+2You can barely see an email address. LETS SPAM IT!!!
- Speedy7, on 01/20/2008, -18/+3Yeah, I think someone needs a bigger pen0r.
- Speedy7, on 01/20/2008, -50/+2Experiment?
THIS IS GOO-GLE!!!!
Yeah, I know that sucks SO BURY FTW!!! - Speedy7, on 01/20/2008, -45/+4I ARE ORANGE STAR YOU
/lolcat - Speedy7, on 01/20/2008, -48/+2GOOGLE EXPERIMENTAL SEARCH ARE VERY EXPERIMENTAL
- EGOvoruhk, on 01/20/2008, -0/+19If only digg had the "X" button, so I could save everyone from suffering you
- Borgcube, on 01/20/2008, -0/+10Fortunately you can bury him.
- markthegoth, on 01/20/2008, -0/+7or better stil block him
- Borgcube, on 01/20/2008, -0/+10Fortunately you can bury him.
- ioannusdeverani, on 01/20/2008, -0/+10Welcome to Digg. I am gratified that you are experimenting with the comment system, and hope that you continue to experience Digg in a way that doesn't tick everyone off.
- EGOvoruhk, on 01/20/2008, -0/+19If only digg had the "X" button, so I could save everyone from suffering you
- insomniacal, on 01/20/2008, -5/+12There's no way Google will leave that information untapped. It'll be quietly figured into Google's secret search algorithms.
- shamess, on 01/20/2008, -0/+10Are you saying that you think Google will use our modified results for generic SERPs? Of course they will. It's stupid to think they won't. I doubt they're hiding this fact.
- misterS, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4quietly? it's the whole point to modify the search parameters by letting the user rate the results!
- SilverMaster, on 01/20/2008, -7/+1Over 1 month old news
- shamess, on 01/20/2008, -0/+6Well, I'm betting a lot of people hadn't seen it, or it wouldn't get dugg up.
- str3ama, on 01/20/2008, -8/+1google 2.0..
sounds like the jump to conclusions mat.. - allyant, on 01/20/2008, -1/+22Go to http://www.google.com/experimental/
And click join the experiment, I think thats how it works.... But it's not showing on it yet...- lougoose, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Which experiment? I can't find it....
- skinrock, on 01/20/2008, -6/+5So wouldn't people question why they pay Google to help their search rankings, only to find out that Google allows the user to modify the results anyways?
- joe57spike, on 01/20/2008, -2/+6As far as I know the modifications only affect the results of the person who made them.
- wolfing, on 01/20/2008, -1/+6Indeed. First of all, companies can't "pay" their way up in Google. What companies can do is bid for terms and they would show in separate regions of the results. The 'organic' results are 100% results from their algorithms.
Also, I don't think they would really want this new personal modifications to affect their general algorithms. They are not stupid, they know they can't trust people with anything.
It is a good addition though, regardless if another company did it first (I just hope they are paying their royalties, or the lawsuit will come faster than I can click on Submit Comment (specially since I have to type in the freaking scratched letters lol) - avinds, on 01/20/2008, -0/+9you don't pay google for organic search results, you have to pay for the sponsored results.
- breakaway, on 01/20/2008, -31/+2***** ***** apple fanboys
- 80hd, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5Who pissed in your cheerios this morning?
- norbiu, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Wrong tab.
- ahpro, on 01/20/2008, -0/+6I like it!
- magicaltrevor, on 01/20/2008, -5/+5So.. what, are they giving up on PageRank or something?
- w00tster, on 01/20/2008, -3/+7To be honest, the ability to "suggest" search results seems like a Googlebombers dream.
While it might be funny to get Dick Cheney's home page if you search for Vlad the Impaler, it certainly screws up the simplicity of search.- calhoun, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2This only affects your own search results.
- jaydedragon, on 01/20/2008, -2/+3yah i figured out how to join an experimant.. but that experiment is not listed to join, nor can i find the name of the experiment so that i could find another way to subscribe to it.. can someone please give me some specific information?
- dildoolielly, on 01/20/2008, -15/+2Found any evidence for the mythical Jesus yet, nutjobs? Maybe this new search will help find ONE shred?
Then again, probably not.
www.JesusNeverExisted.com- batguano, on 01/20/2008, -1/+3Must be a sale on Crazy today
- warlokaz2004, on 01/20/2008, -0/+10I always feel like a kid in a candy store when I hit the page for Google Labs.
ALL HAIL GOOGLE!!!! - xy666, on 01/20/2008, -1/+8I think this is usefull to kill spam in engines.
- xdevit, on 01/20/2008, -3/+3This is a bad idea. one word (or is it two) GoogleBomb... I do wish the damn patents would be REMOVED from searching. Seems like every other search I do I have 2 pages of patents.
Or better yet more of a personal search to exclude certain crap with out having todo -freepatentsonline.com -patentstorm.us and trying to find a movie or anything that so happens to be also a movie title.. you get bombed with torrent links - Threlly1, on 01/20/2008, -1/+4I can find the list of experiments, but not the one where I can rank or filter ?
- bubblesbodywear, on 01/20/2008, -2/+0I would like to be able to remove some sites from my more frequent searches (non-relevant sites like link farms/shopping comparisons...mynippon, nextag, etc) but at the same time, it's not so great for content owners. Say you change or improve or change your content (add more topics or products)? The searcher will not have the opportunity or temptation to ever click on that link again (unless they revert) and that content owner looses the chance to improve their content or to ever redeem themselves with original searchers who didn't like the content at the time of that first search.
- Akyan, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2It's called relevance feedback, not a new thing in terms of information retrieval. I suspect the changes only affect results to you personally btw, its unlikely they will mess with everyones results using collected data.
- trex279, on 01/20/2008, -1/+4http://www.searchmash.com/
They've been experimenting with it for a long time. (http://www.searchmash.com/about/tos.html)
Edit: The feature doesn't seem to be on searchmash presently, though I have seen it there before - kenbiz, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1how good was this experimental search for us...i guess not a good one for now
- adamawick, on 01/20/2008, -1/+6C'mon--does anyone *ever* want search results from about.com?!
- jvaill, on 01/20/2008, -1/+0I think it's neat that google keeps trying out new ways to innovate on its "search", however 99% of these will never make it to market.
- jiveturkeyblues, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2i'd kind of like a wiki-style search engine. where we move pages up for particular keywords and it effects everyone. would be a nice google alternative. (and of course there'd be scores of losers who go through all the recent changes checking for "googlebombing". like the rabid vandalism squad at wikipedia.)
- threetoedkoala, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1The idea of removing or adding results is good as long as it only affects the individuals search reqults. If Google were to take it a step further and let users actions affect the overall rankings of results - it would encourage an over whelming amount of maniputaltion of the SERPs.
- watoowatooir, on 01/20/2008, -5/+1Wow! Google website was down when i checked it at 2:15pm ET. also Reuters.com!
Is this digg effect!????- zongamin, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3shut up.
- andybeal, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Very old news : http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2007/11/google-exp ...
- jordankasteler, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Old news panchos.
- ggolem, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2If I were doing this, it wouldn't just add or remove the items you wanted or didn't want. It would make an adjusted version of its rating algorithm, which it would apply only to your searches.
- aphexer, on 01/21/2008, -0/+0Can anyone provide a link where you can subscribe to this 'experimental search engine'? It doesn't seem to be available yet.
- aelfwyne, on 01/26/2008, -0/+0Grr - I went to the Labs page and selected one of the other search tests, and didn't realize this one wasn't listed. Now I can't reselect it. Back to using CustomiseGoogle to remove useless highly ranked sites (such as all the for online store sites when I am searching for hardware REVIEWS and NOT trying to BUY hardware)... dangit.
Browsing Digg on your phone just got easier with our enhancements to the
