I dont know any girls that use Linux but I know one that uses Mac and shes loves to spend money on it, so I think that tells allot about the Mac girls.

I run linux (Ubuntu these days, Fedora and RedHat in the past), Mac OS X and have a windows machine running XP for odd jobs. I started on VAX machines, did some research on CRAY supercomputers (as an undergrad), did most of my Ph.D. research on UNIX machines (Solaris) and currently run my models on an OS X cluster and a Mac Pro. I learned about computers and programming through the process of earning an undergraduate degree and a Ph.D. in physics. And I must say, there are more women involved in computing than you might realize.

To say a woman in high heels can't use Unix is arrogant, but to say there is an abundance of estrogen in the IT field is little more than wishful thinking. Coming from a man with very high standards, it's a shame. I wish more women shared your scholastic endeavors. Brilliance is in itself it's own beauty.

In all of the bombast that occurs on a daily basis on Digg, it's good to hear supportive comments about them, occasionally, with respect to science and computing. Second, I didn't really state a theory, actually, I'm relating the fact that I've gotten to know quite a few women who are good with computers, and I never said there was an abundance of them in IT. My comment was made in the, probably futile, attempt to wave a little flag and say hey, look here guys, a counter example. I try to be very careful in the way I state things, so that they aren't taken out of context, that is why I said 'there might be more than you realize'.

        Anyway, the article was a silly one, and here I am trying to be serious. meh.
