How to Become a Digg Top User (without doing anything shady)
10e20.com — The more powerful the user is that submits your story to Digg - the better chance it has of making the homepage. Despite the fact that Digg removed Top User rankings last month your place in the line is as important as ever. Why?
- 906 diggs
- digg it
- alberto24, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22perfect example here :) Mr. BabyMan is the man, literally!
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -9/+63I honestly never got what the point of the entire "friend" thing that Digg has. Is there anything good coming out of it?
It's all about people digging their friends stories just for the sake of them being friends, and not for the sake of the quality of the story.
This indeed hurts me since more and more trash make its way into Diggs frontpage.
I'm not interested in reading a story just because the submitter had many friends. I want to read stories that many people subjectively thought were of high quality. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8One also needs to make short winded but witty comments!
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6What if I really like Digg, but really have no inclination towards becoming a top user? I might want to reconsider my time management if I ever became one.
My icon totally stands out though. Yes, it was intentional. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Wow, my icon is there too. By the way, I did an article like this a while back but it's 35 ways to do (all non shady of course)
Here it is: http://tech-blot.com/2007/01/35-tips-to-promote-yourself-in-the-digg-community/ - fkr2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Use this site, it tells you the categories with the highest success rate, what time you should be submitting in each category and what the top sources are
http://scoutd.com - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"It's all about people digging their friends stories just for the sake of them being friends, and not for the sake of the quality of the story.

Thats not entirely true, sure I might do that with a person I know personally but how many people here are friends in real life? usually I friend a person because I have similiar intrests and dont always agree with some of the things they submit but none the less are intrested in seeing what they think is cool based on the other things they have submitted or commented on. - dasluvaluva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13But, in all honestly, what's the point of being a top digg user? Is there any benefit besides free notoriety?
- meteorash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The title should rather have been "How To be the biggest geek with no life... on digg"
- underdog138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm watching these comments and actually relating them to real life, so excuse me. I missed the window to comment and have said comment actually be read and dugg one way or another, but that's okay. I don't really give two ***** one way or another. I just came to digg to read news that were chosen in a democratic way by those of us that actually wanted to read something interesting, chosen by the supposedly intellectual people that frequent sites like digg and slashdot. Apparently this is not so. Apparently, for those of you that actually have no life, it's a game. Who can hit the front page the most times? Who cares? I, myself, am tired of the mainstream media, and I want something a little more mature to tell me what's going on in the world, and you kids aren't helping, with your *****-swinging game of front page superiority. Digg was supposed to be a democratic news site, but apparently like the country I live in (the United States), people would rather undermine the process than do what it was meant to do.
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@underdog138--Very good points about Digg and what it means to add Digg to one's browsing routines.
(It's better to decompress longer comments like this as they scan quicker for fast readers.)
Digg is just an extension of my MyYahoo front page with 50 RSS modules from all over the webscape. I have no interest in becoming a member of another virtual community and assume my user rating here will remain 0. I have some cool icons but purposely leave that box blank.
But as things go with the way Digg is being gamed and hacked probably another few months at most for me then Sayonara Baby!! - Zera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"But as things go with the way Digg is being gamed and hacked probably another few months at most for me then Sayonara Baby!!"
See, I agree, and this is what happens when a website starts to be trafficked by an increasingly mainstream audience.
Wouldn't all (or at least most) of this problem be solved with a clone of the main page of digg? Have the primary pages be 'actual news' and the secondary mirror of the main page be for 'neat stuff' I'm sorry but a tutorial on how to make a sweet drop down menu for your website may be neat, it may be helpful, but IT IS NOT NEWS. The two pages could be easily democratically moderated with one simple menu. Next to the digg down menu, just have a menu with the options: This is News. This is not News. This is a Video. This is a Photo. Etc. Submitters could select a starting category, but ultimately the categories would sort themselves.
I guess I just think that there is so little actual news on Digg's page anymore that its not a news site. It's a "what's been submitted lately that is neat" website. - underdog138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Zera
No, it would not. It's like running away from the problem. The internet is slowly (yet in a way, very rapidly) becoming "mainstream media", and the people that you say keep infesting sites like digg will always do so, because that's how the media has worked for as long as we can remember. Another separate front page will not do. It's like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole (any scarling fans around here?). The only thing that would keep the ignorant from tainting the rest of the more educated group is to try to stay ahead, is better education. That's another story all together. Good luck trying to make a dent in that. - underdog138, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1oops, ignore this one
- dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@kalleanka: I agree with your points, personally I think they should remove the 'friends' aspect of Digg altogether. What is the point of it anyway, it's not like this is myspace, it's a news site.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Digg is the new MySpace.
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"But, in all honestly, what's the point of being a top digg user? Is there any benefit besides free notoriety?"
Actually, the site was way more active with the top users list. After it was removed the number of articles hitting frontpage has dropped significantly, and so has the quality of these articles. Also, when an article hits front page it is mostly outdated.
I vote for the top user ranking list back! - Zera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@underdog
But at least it would separate the news out from everything else. - Kazanoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where is "Resubmit news that is about 6 months old, so long as its cool, people will probably digg you."
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -9/+63I honestly never got what the point of the entire "friend" thing that Digg has. Is there anything good coming out of it?
- gmark13, on 10/12/2007, -19/+7Very good article.
- LordofChaosIori, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Yeah it's very informative! I never wondered if my icon stood out...
- nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9qmark13 strikes again. Even though he didn't submit this story, his comment on it has +4 diggs as we speak.
"Very Good Article" - That comment added no actual new information, insight, conclusion, etc, but 4 of his friends dugg it up anyways. Normally a comment like that would be in the negatives - subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@nsummy==It' down now. You're right. I usually ignore pointless "me too" drivel but I'll click him down just to help you prove your point.
- diggrific, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Sad, but true. Is this how we REALLY want to be, or is a change in attitude overdue?
- Eastlygod, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22I've been told Diggers like this.....
I can't wait for the iPhone!
Linux rules!
Just 'how' good is Heroes?
Obama '08!
Wii Sports... dude!
IE sucks! Long live the Fox!
Google is it, man!
Woah! Go Kevin!- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Yeah I was going to say, the author missed Kevin on the list of things we like, we also like most of the Digg and Revision3 staff as well.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Don't forget LifeHacker! It's even on his list!
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You forgot,
the ps3 is going to be a bigger flop then the virtual boy - turrican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@Eastlygod: "Linux rules!"
No, that's Slashdot. Here at digg, it would be "Ubuntu rules!" - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1In his list of stuff diggers don't like he left out Sony, does he even use digg?
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3forgot the "PS3 Sucks!"
- Wezlanator, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41You mean all of the blow jobs I gave to random top diggers was for nothing!
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30Your icon looks like a set of boobs, so you're in good shape according to the article.
- Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yay for boob icons! :D
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Wow...this is a great list.
Best blog post I have seen about digg in awhile. - supernova17, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6http://www.10e20.com.nyud.net:8080/2007/03/06/how-to-become-a-digg-top-user-without-doing-anything-shady/
Site is slowing down.
Hey, my icon! - megaloa, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Lets make a white page be on top 10 on digg.com ... http://digg.com/tech_news/Make_a_WHITE_PAGE_be_on_the_top_10_on_DIGG
its just a funny experiment. - nightlovergirls, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0is it worthy getting hot girls and being popular. http://www.yahoocollege.com
- malavalla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i have word with a digg template
- kisscucumber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0u should have included posting a nude picture of natalie portman
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5So who wants to be friends? ;) lol
- Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I still don't recognize the top digg users. Does everyone out there actively remember all these names just so they can biasly digg them in the future?
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3loving the title...without doing anything shady....lol
- AugustWest333, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Not true, my first post here earned me 2461 Diggs http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/17_How_The_Hell_Images
- wooties, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4how about having a job where you can spend all day on digg instead of actually being productive?
or being unemployed maybe? - redxii, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Just put "Ubuntu" in the title.
- Spiritcatcher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0I just look at the pictures. I'm not here to read the articles or get dug or posted. I just right clicked Ad Block and deleted all of your Icons.
Did I mention I might like messin' with people just a little. - gfxone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I digg it.
- MYarms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Jeez is your life really that much of a popularity contest that you care so much about being a top user on digg?!?!
WTF.- MiNGLED, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Being a 'top digger' means nothing to me personally but if you get stories to the homepage regularly, you can get a lot of people heading to whatever site you're pushing for no cost. Beats having to pay for banners.
- maddendude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How to have an instant 3000+ digg top story:
Have sex with your female teacher, and PROVIDE PICS!!! - deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well.. screw this, I would much rather know how to do it the shady way.. I mean no one really cares about me anyway, and I hate spam.. so no blog bosts.. waht's a guy to do??
- JeffS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think some people may think number of diggs = size of crum. I don't think this is necessarily true.
- inspecality, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Buried to cause inaccuracy.
- DigiDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good post. But I disagree on the name thing. I don't think you need a name that starts with A or a number to help you out on digg. Even if your name is AAAAZ (higher than the original AAAZ) you still have to submit good stuff for people to befriend you.
I agree things like voting, leaving comments, all that jazz will help. But in the end, I still think content is king.- AtomicCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the point he was trying to make was that once befriended, you'll do better when higher on someone's friend list than someone with lower position. Most of us have limited time and not all of us manage to get to the bottom of the list everyday.
- CosminBurner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really now, I'm for articles that give you advice on blogging or using a site (like Digg) at it's full potential, but I'm against such articles that only teach you how to make a crap out of a otherwise good system (like Digg). Yeah, let's all just digg our friends regardless of their stories and live a happy digg life.
I'm watching Digg for a while now, though I've only recently made a user, and I think it's a great site, but this sort of articles annoy me. Buried! - tommytrc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good post is right. I think its all about getting good content and getting it first. Not the naming of it.
If people are seeing postings to heavily advertising-laden personal blogs, then bury the story. People should be posting to the source and not trying to drive traffic to their own site...that's too self serving. This is our community and we can get rid of that by simply burying the stories that are self serving.
it does bother me that Kevin is getting all the glory and the top diggers are losing theirs with the top 10 listing being gone. I realize Kevin had the Digg idea, but it was by the help of the users digg got so big.
- labradore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Respectfully,
Who The ***** Cares?
Digg gets gamed every day. Articles that are nothing more half-assed top ten lists located on heavily advertising-laden personal blogs make it to the front page all the time. If Digg works correctly then it's the mob in action (pure democracy) and you're always going to be able to game the mob. If it doesn't work correctly then it's Slashdot.
Yeah, I visit Digg maybe 5 times a day, but IT's JUST A COLLECTION OF LINKS AND (crappy) COMMENTARY. There's some good articles, many bad. They stream thru fast and you can usually absorb the tiny bits of meaningful content just as fast. If you feel powerful because you get to help decide what shows up on 10 million user's browsers every morning you need to _get_a_life_.
If articles about Digg didn't get voted up easily on Digg, then the site would probably be dead boring anyhow, but every time I see this junk, I think to myself, "***** navel gazers...."
Yours Truely,
Bob- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah the whole idea of "Top Digger" sounds so middle school I can't believe that supposedly edgy geeks would fall for it. Unless there is a long term profit motive involved.......
- anomalya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1digg really needs to get bigger so all this stupid top user ***** goes bye bye
- Brajeshwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, diggers like Microsoft related stories but in a different way! I am pretty sure more than 70% of my submitted microsoft related articles goes to the front page.
- ipodwheels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NOTHING NEW! The same principles apply anywhere. I think that if Diggers will vote just because a friend does, that makes this whole community mob ruled. I guess there is evidence of that somewhere... but I might be wrong. I think DIGG should try anonymous votes after some time. Same rules but less visibility for the Digg celebritites. This will give a give all articles the same treatment regardless of who votes it.
- todizzytotell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You guys are so LAME... is kevin rose paying you guys for digging GOOD articles??? NO... he's just laughing to the bank.. and you idiots are trying to get your stories on the front page like ITS A BIG THING!? Man...... and then digging article's on how to digg....???
LAME...
DIGG ME DOWN........ LIKE I CARE. - wedesoft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You think that you cannot get that many friends on digg? Then you should watch Demetri Martin's documentary about social networking!
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-8240248787017692740
:-D - dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This nothing but a 'howto' on how to 'create headlines', which what they do in the mainstream media! The reason I came to and liked Digg is the democratic way I 'thought' it worked, articles like this are making me realise just how wrong I was.
Kevin, you need to drop 'having friends'. Digg is rapidly loosing its integrity and it's quite obvious that the 'friends' element is one way it's being abuse. What should be a democratic system is biased by the few.- malavalla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kevin you need to drink more beer so you don't lose your integrity
- Anarchyx2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see it mattering if you're a kid with nothing much more than online friends. But to the older crowd who look to Digg for interesting articles and information, ranking doesn't matter a bit. In fact, the more mature crowd never even logs into Digg or posts comments. Why waste time and effort posting comments in hopes of some decent response, when you'll just get dugg down by some kid who disagrees, and then his three online friends digg you down too? Not to mention that it ticks me off to see people digg down a "parent" comment, but then digg up the rebuttal "child" comments below it. Makes no sense.
Yes, I was an avid Digg fan for awhile. But between the kids on here, and the "digg effect", I got sick of it all and gave up. I only post a comment once in a great while now.
So why is it the Digg "community" is made up of a bunch of loser kids anyways with no real bearing on life? - tommytrc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1hey my icon --How cool is that!
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So, these people never got round to getting a life then? Shame.
- BigBill62629, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What is the purpose of becoming a "top Digger"?
What a waste of time.- WanderLink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're right.
- Adamesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The amount of time spent trying to become a Digg top user is inversely proportional to the resulting change in Digg's quality.
Translation: Just contribute to contribute, not for some virtual status, and Digg will be a good place. - WanderLink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Friends - the more friends you have, the more diggs you will get. Many people digg all of their friend’s submissions - the more popular you are the more friends you will have."
So it's just like Myspace. Shallow, vapid, and pointless. - h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2***** your blogspam *****
- GerryBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like it. I'm getting tired of quick-fix social media marketers exploiting sites like Digg for traffic. Although I think it's fine to do this if you're actively participating in the community.
- bbtan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually who is the top user?
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
