Inconvenient Truths of the Digg Front Page
looklinklove.com — People don't want to believe the truth when it comes to social networking sites. There are two ways to get an article to the front of digg. The article must either be from a website that has a well established reputation with Digg users, or the submitter must have a profile lavished with friends and be In the Know of the Digg systematics...
- 1823 diggs
- digg it
- vitalpixel, on 07/03/2008, -4/+62very truthful :)
- dn11, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7see truth number 5 for more insight into why this is on the front page. redundant self referential, critical stories about digg are ALWAYS the sure thing...
- HonoredMule, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Not all that inconvenient though, really.
- badjoke, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4For us underdogs it is.
- DocHoliday22, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Hmmm... This explains why so many people want me to add them as a fan.... Bummer... I kinda felt special...
- iNunchuk, on 07/03/2008, -4/+1Another tip, submit articles that are from Reddit - seriously, they have good content.
- Gioleb, on 07/03/2008, -2/+4Not so much. My first submission ever, a pic hosted on tinypic made front page.
I had two (2) friends at the time.
It may be that the submission was not as insightful as I would have liked it to be but still, it made front page and was top story for a few hours.- ConceptJunkie, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6C'mon "Sluts" was a gimme. ;-)
- ConceptJunkie, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6C'mon "Sluts" was a gimme. ;-)
- M10REN, on 07/03/2008, -4/+4I disagree, Just put "Impeach Bush" or "O Riely got Pwnd" in the title an you will have thousands of bleeding heart libs digging you up to the front page.
- DarkDx, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3THis is why I don't want a friends feature in reddit :)
- known, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I have to complain.
Digg Front Page rarely displays stories happening in BRIC nations (40% global population) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRIC - robbh66, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Very truthful and very sad that it's the truth. If Digg REALLY wanted to do something useful they'd build a duplicate article submission-rejection engine instead of all of this social crap and recommendation engine *****.
- d3k4y, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I don''t know about that. The front page has begun to suck more and more over the last 5 or 6 months though.
- ch4os1337, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4It wasn't like this in the good old days.
- faatbuddha, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I like how people are trying to bury this.
- fluffyrocks, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1At this point, digg isn't even a popularity contest anymore. It's a simply a matter of who can wedge out the most competing submittions. Regular users don't have a chance at getting dugg and even powerhouse users have to comete with each other. Digg will never have very cool content until it stops favoring powerhouse users. Reddit has solved these problems fairly well, so it's kind of sad that the largest social bookmarking site is turning into a giant ad for about 15 users.
- Clark, on 07/03/2008, -5/+99Forgot to mention cats.
Meow!
*purr*- toxicityj, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9*digg digg digg*
- ehc123456, on 07/03/2008, -3/+1And if you post cat and say "pussy", well, just wait for the digg avalanche.
- intelligen, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7Hmmm...or post an article whining about not being able to make it to the front page.
I just use Digg to find a few interesting articles each day. I've never posted anything, and I really don't care to. If everything that was posted was interesting, I'd probably end up wasting even more of my life online, which would be a bad thing. - DulcetTone, on 07/03/2008, -3/+0Cats? Really?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO3ZbQiGNkk - EvilSibe, on 07/03/2008, -3/+2Dogs!!!

- manzplan, on 07/03/2008, -3/+117indeed I have submitted some links that I KNOW are excellent quality.. and yet.. never made over 100 diggs..
I think 70 is the most I have ever had on any submission, and I really had to push for that...- IMA_Sellout, on 07/03/2008, -0/+21I hear ya... during this whole Canada-DMCA debacle I put up a good primer on what this whole thing is and i think it barely left single digits...
- ivosilva, on 07/03/2008, -0/+71Well, I submited a story that has 995 diggs, and it never was popular, and wasnt featured at the front page, while this story has 174 at the moment and is on front page. I'd like to understand THAT.
- flashback99, on 07/03/2008, -0/+20that's quite interesting. I wonder if theres a way to track the slow burners on digg?
- aenima987, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6How long ago was it? I'm guessing it was a while ago because the current algorithm would never do that.
- quomen, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7Yeah, I tried submitting a bunch of stories a while back. I beat a bunch of people to some interesting news articles but it didn't matter. My name lacks the words Man. And Mr. and Baby. In no particular order. The only popular submission I had was when I submitted a link to a poll to help support Ron Paul on MSNBC's website. I was buried after front page :P
- V3n0M, on 07/03/2008, -0/+16I thought you were making that up but there it is:
http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Sometimes_you_just_post_ ...
Make it 998 diggs now! - D4CH, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7ONE THOUSAND! Kachiiiiing!
- dgaspard, on 07/03/2008, -1/+15I've read this before. It's been on the front page.
- Notyavgkat, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3exactly
- chemam, on 07/03/2008, -4/+3wtf stop complaining that your duplicate never made it. after all, we don't need to be reminded about fatloser
- ivosilva, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4To whoever says it's a dupe, I took the picture myself immediatly when it happened. Show me the "original" and compare timestamps.
- sodoh, on 07/03/2008, -2/+8It gets worse then that to be honest. I have noticed that there are active media bodies burying stories/comments that are negative to them. Fox News being one. there was one story that a week later nearly everything that was negative to Fox news was buried. I see that Digg caught them though as the comments are back to normal.
Still it is annoying when people subvert your social network. - mossblaser, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Don't forget the other rule! Just put ubuntu in the title. I managed a [single] front paged article just by doing that... :)
- ConfusedCartman, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I just submitted something(New 360 Hardware Options) that lots of diggers were immediately interested in, and it hit the front page. That's the only time it worked the way they say it does, though.
- staffell, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Damn, I feel like every story of mine should reach the front page, but that's never the case. ***** it, I don't care.
- ChaosProfessor, on 07/03/2008, -10/+28as a guy that has not once posted XKCD or zero punctuaton or suck at photoshop I have made front page and most popular for 24 hours once and i have a story now that is working its way to the front page. My boss has posted the video of the why you should buy wii fit. and that was in the top for the last 30 days
- mustache, on 07/03/2008, -0/+28Someone should give you a prize.
- ChaosProfessor, on 07/03/2008, -2/+8thanks
- quomen, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6Did he say that you were welcome?
- mustache, on 07/03/2008, -0/+28Someone should give you a prize.
- Tribis, on 07/03/2008, -4/+215Submit something that MrBabyMan might enjoy and it will make it to the front page.
- thedogfatherx, on 07/03/2008, -2/+36I think MrBabyMan has no life.
- thailand1972, on 07/03/2008, -2/+37.....as a re-submission of the same story by MrBabyMan.
- bwdd, on 07/03/2008, -2/+13I see you got the joke.
...good for you!
- bwdd, on 07/03/2008, -2/+13I see you got the joke.
- staffell, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6One of my submissions was dugg by babyman, but unfortunately he was the only person other than me, so that doesn't make sense.
- sLydE, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4woooooosh!
- cl0n3x, on 07/03/2008, -3/+16Two words can almost guarantee you get to the front: Friends+Shouts
- rdr97, on 07/03/2008, -3/+79Another inconvenient truth of Digg: this article was at the front a month ago and will probably be back at the front in August.
Irony?- nohero, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9not really sure what you mean?
- MarkusX, on 07/03/2008, -0/+21I, too, seem to have read this exact text just recently somewhere else or I am suffering from a really vivid Deja-Vue. Hmmm...?
Well, a little "digging" through Scott's submissions revealed, that he submitted this exact text not quite 3 weeks ago with a different headline.
http://digg.com/tech_news/7_Things_You_Must_Unders ...
Now, giving you the benefit of the doubt, and hoping that you did that for research purposes only (because it's a good article and what you write in it is quite true!), I won't asssume any evil intention behind the double submission.
But I think i'd be better if you continued your digging in the future with _new_ articles. I do understand, however, that you wanted to get that article out in this forum. What better audience for your article is there than the digg users themseves? None.
- MarkusX, on 07/03/2008, -0/+21I, too, seem to have read this exact text just recently somewhere else or I am suffering from a really vivid Deja-Vue. Hmmm...?
- ziggygazzo, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5No. Its not ironic at all. It actually bolsters one of the points of his argument.
"digg prefers hearing news about itself and firefox more than anything. So if you write anything about Digg or Firefox, chances are it will do better than a post about how ‘red heads have more freckles than the average brown haired person‘ or anything else less unusual..." - mrm3x1can, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4ok, from dictionary.com
i·ro·ny-
an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected. the incongruity of this.
thats irony people.- mikesbaker, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2thats def # 5 or something. irony is the use of words to convey something other than their original intent
- notthatnoise, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4you know for those of us that don't spend all day on digg it's nice to have the occasional article resubmitted so that we can enjoy it too
- beahmad, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2well put
- nohero, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9not really sure what you mean?
- deltron, on 07/03/2008, -0/+23Amazing. It honestly feels like yesterday when you can submit a story and it'd be on the first page of "Upcoming" for atleast 20 minutes.
- masterm1nd, on 07/03/2008, -5/+22I think the diggs that stories get from friends shouldn't count. For instance if you and a friend digg the same thing it should count as one. That would solve a lot of this.
- useful, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1OK and then everyone who gamed the system would have 0 friends.
A better thing to do is to is make links that aren't clicked not count. This can be established with javascript, link redirects and the amount of time between user actions. - kawaiirobo, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2I honestly think the best way to do away with it is get rid of friends and shouts, I really don't see a point other than shameless self promotion, if you want friends go to facebook or a bar or something, I just don't think it has much of a place on digg other than to create the atmosphere we are all complaining about.
- useful, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1OK and then everyone who gamed the system would have 0 friends.
- samimy, on 07/03/2008, -5/+18you are right !
i have seen these days allot of crab and ***** just get on front page !
i am fed-up of digg !
they should change the way it is !- tehknotte, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10ah so that's why it smelled fishy.
- fusionFactor, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7allot? LOLZ!
crab? LOLZ!
fed-up? LOLZ!
- ethornquist, on 07/03/2008, -24/+3Uh, yes. No matter what the formula, the McCainiacs will find a way to network to Digg up stories that either:
A) make CNN / MSNBC look silly
B) try to poke at Barack Obama's integrity
C) come directly from Fox or one of its many satellite blogs
D) make Digg look silly (i.e. getting together to bleat about a story from last August that they themselves dugg up, both times)
when
E) the Digg front page needs more Allison Stokke
I am John McCain and I approve this message.
The conspiracy is this: no Allison Stokke.- cwmather, on 07/03/2008, -1/+10What world do you live in where conservative articles make it to the front page?
- deathsythe, on 07/03/2008, -3/+9You are the type of digg-sheep that prevents any kind of non-obama praising article from making it to the front page, and yet you can think that? Disgusting.
- MrTito, on 07/03/2008, -0/+28I dunno, it's very early in the process to say it with certainty, but I think this recommendation engine might change all that. For a while perhaps, anyhow. I don't think I've dugg a MrBabyMan article since the change. The only politcal article on the front page right now is from the Onion and it's about Bush. Weirdness.
That's not to say that suddenly there's great content filling up the front page, but it looks like there's been an impact.- Notyavgkat, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5I noticed that also...it seems alot more INTERESTING articles are hitting the front page now, for a change. Instead of all the same ol bull@#%^!!
- ed54, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Gotta love the new system.
- juliebubb, on 07/03/2008, -7/+4Great article....very interesting
- Julz, on 07/03/2008, -2/+9so you got this story to the front page using one of those two tactics? or could it just be that its a interesting submission?
- tcpip4lyfe, on 07/03/2008, -10/+28Buried because Im a dick like that.

- seraph582, on 07/03/2008, -3/+4/rolleyes
not a big fan of browsing the internet are ya
- seraph582, on 07/03/2008, -3/+4/rolleyes
- c187, on 07/03/2008, -4/+1What's the point of digging this any way?
- Mononuclear, on 07/03/2008, -0/+167This list is why digg is getting worse and worse. If people only submitted articles that they honestly thought were good then there wouldn't be thousands of articles in upcoming. It would be much easier for people to browse upcoming and chose the really good ones from the few and have an extremely quality website.
Instead people submit every website they see in the hopes of getting to the frontpage or to get traffic to their site or a billion other reasons that have nothing to do with whether or not the content is actually good. In most cases the content isn't good. This created thousands of useless articles in the upcoming section that makes it impossible to actually stir through the ***** and find the worthwhile articles. Then you have the people who do what this article says and add hundreds of friends of people they don't know only to shout spam their article and circle jerk eachother saying "You digg mine and I'll digg yours" Then regardless of quality people digg each other's crap articles because they want someone to digg their crap article.
Long story short. If people only submitted worthwhile content that they honestly thought was really good and front page worthy then we would have problems and anyone would be able to get a front page article if it was good. Instead of being selfish idiots with ego trips trying to get famous on digg, If you cared about the site you would only submit quality articles in the effort to make this site better.
I don't care who submits an article. If it is good I digg it. If it sucks I bury it. If it is just ok I leave it alone. I have no friends because I don't want your shout spam to digg your crappy article. I have many fans none of them I have ever talked to or known. They added me in hopes I would add them and the circle jerk would continue. I refuse.- Mononuclear, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7that should say "...then we wouldn't have problems..." edit time ran out sorry
- charliecharlos, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2At its best, [Digg] is a summary of the world — deeper, broader and more nuanced than anything ever available before ... but at its worst, and for too many, [Digg] is merely a collection of trivia, much of it untrue.
- fas2, on 07/03/2008, -0/+16100% agreed.
- Asrrin29, on 07/03/2008, -0/+15I pretty much do the same thing. I am a reader on digg, not a submitter. If something is really good, I dig it, if it is really bad I bury it, and if it's just ok I leave it alone.
- thelock65, on 07/03/2008, -2/+3I'm kinda the opposite. If it really good, I bury it. Bad, I digg it. If it's just alright...it's alright by me
- ed54, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1good job. you can restate.
- Gatesophile, on 07/03/2008, -1/+17I have friends and fans, but I turned shouts off. It got WAY too annoying. No, I WON'T digg your ***** story because you'll digg mine in return. ***** you.
- quomen, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Upcoming is a CHORE to look at. Especially when half of them are trash (as in worse than lolcats trash) and there are millions of pages that you have to sift through.. I wonder how a one submission per day system would work. It'd encourage more people to submit and help counter spam.
Honestly, getting something to the frontpage is even harder than me building a decent ratio/power user on a private music tracker that I use. I'd rather not go through the work to do it. - quomen, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5PS, the recommended news haven't looked good for me. I got a link about the nicest green dresses, hellboy on inside the actors studio, and a political article when I have politics blocked.
wtf. - superjadex12, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Can someone please tell me what is so great about making the front page anyway?
I mean SERIOUSLY...
Don't people have other means of happiness and fullfillment? Don't we have careers, families, real-life friends, hobbies and passionas? Why is this such a big deal?
(don't bury, this is a legitimate question)- nohero, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I thought it said that in the article...
getting an article to the front page makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. - ed54, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Can someone please tell me what is so great about not being buried in the comments?
I mean SERIOUSLY...
- nohero, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I thought it said that in the article...
- Mononuclear, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7that should say "...then we wouldn't have problems..." edit time ran out sorry
- Ford_Prefect2nd, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6I have relativly little "friends" on digg, however I submitted a storey that managed about 2000 diggs and got to the front page last year... I will grant you I have submitted well more then 1 storey, however the site that got to the front page was not a well known site... so this theory in my opinion does not play out.
- Pauli92, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I wish I could say the same!
- Dennis88, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5relatively *few* friends.
sorry.- RachaelMichele, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6You don't know that. Maybe his friends are *little*. :)
- nohero, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3last year... so maybe digg was *relatively* smaller, and hence easier to get to the FP with good content.
- ohnoerino, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2storey (a floor in a tall building)? how in the world did you manage to submit a storey?
- arjie, on 07/03/2008, -0/+11That's only natural, I would think. I know that I pay very little attention to the 1 digg articles, the 2s, 3s and 5s are more interesting. At each stage, you open yourself to more people. Many will be interested in the article when it breaks into the upcoming list for most diggs. Until you get there the large majority will miss your story, so you need friends to promote it when its young.
It's like any other thing, in the beginning you're just another face in the crowd. If there's actually something to you, popularity will increase exponentially, it's contagious.
***** digg comment box, bouncing up and down like some *****. Can't hit the save comment button.- iMyst, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2dugg up for that last part
- ileftfark, on 07/03/2008, -3/+3Post an article/graphic about Digg.com = front page.
- bxblox, on 07/03/2008, -1/+76Solution: eliminate "friends" on digg.
- RachaelMichele, on 07/03/2008, -0/+16word. I have never added a single friend request for this reason.
- tian2992, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8I disagree, i am very select with the friends I add, and I almost always digg their submissions, because the submissions are of great Quality. Still I hate that many bad content gets front paged just because their friends dugg It.
I suggest get rid of shouts.
- TheImaginator, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Yes but, this is only true if you look via the popular filter - I look at both popular and upcoming.
Not so sure I like the new engine though, looks like it tries to narrow my list of visible stories to what it thinks I want.
Would prefer that to be optional.- bryanwebster, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Yes it does try and narrow the list to stuff it thinks you want, that is the whole point of it!!
And yes it is optional. Just hit the all button to get all stories.
- bryanwebster, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Yes it does try and narrow the list to stuff it thinks you want, that is the whole point of it!!
- Pauli92, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9The truth is you submit it and if it doesn't get ten diggs in about ten minutes you might as well considered it buried :(
- thekassette, on 07/03/2008, -0/+39Okay, can someone please explain something to me? Like the majority of Diggers, I'm mostly a lurker here: I check in once or twice a day to see if anything significant has hit the front page. I comment/digg/bury occasionally, but mostly just wander here for the lulz and such.
My question is this: WHAT IS SO AWESOME ABOUT HAVING A STORY YOU SUBMIT HIT THE FRONT PAGE? More specifically, what is so awesome about it that one would, as the link suggests, "try to get over 100 diggs before 24 hours is spent" or spend time building a sizable network of "friends"? Is there a cash prize? Is it just sort of a for-the-hell-of-it game with a validating win?
I don't mean any offense, so please don't bury. I just get more curious about the payoff every time I read one of these "how to get your story on Digg's front page" stories. Thanks.- ClosedOffice, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Digg is about traffic and if your submission doesn't get a lot of diggs quickly it doesn't get much traffic. I have a site with writing that seemed to me to be quite high quality so I thought I'd finally submit something after reading here for years.
I just did that about 12 hours ago, came back to see how things were going and couldn't find it anywhere except in my profile where it was sitting with 6 diggs. It's my first experience with this but without at least a strong start, it looks like it is not going to generate enough traffic to make a submission worth the effort, so it is a bit disappointing.
This never occurred to me when I was reading, just when I finally did post, then the title of this article was interesting.- thekassette, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I should have been more specific. I definitely understand the benefit in getting a site you're involved with on the front page. So is a lot of the action around here made up of content creators convincing high-profile diggers to digg their latest whatever?
So maybe my question is this: what's awesome about getting a story you're in no way involved with on the front page?
- thekassette, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I should have been more specific. I definitely understand the benefit in getting a site you're involved with on the front page. So is a lot of the action around here made up of content creators convincing high-profile diggers to digg their latest whatever?
- Dyre, on 07/03/2008, -1/+10I would assume the main reason is that it draws people to your website/blog/whatever which, if the article has nothing to do with you and getting your message/idea/opinion out there, then it is probably bringing you money because you have some sort of ads on your site.
For the people that actually do straight-up reporting (just the facts) or find articles to post, I'm sure it's some kind of rush to be the first/best one to write about/post something people are interested in. It's a popularity contest....kind of. - quomen, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4The point is to think that your contribution is valuable and considered. It's user submitted content, but 80% of that content that is frontpaged are from 1% of the users. The front page is just an oligopoly of babyman zaibatsu saleem deathwish808 etc..
- thedogfatherx, on 07/03/2008, -0/+12Sometimes it's for sad and lonely reasons. Hence people who want to get articles on the frontpage of digg. Makes them feel special when in reality it's a worthless accomplishment that nobody gives a ***** about.
- TheTSArt, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4"Like the majority of Diggers, I'm mostly a lurker here: I check in once or twice a day to see if anything significant has hit the front page."
You answered your own question. That's why it's important. People come to front page, click what's there and leave. If it's not popular, most people (yourself included) never see it. - merreborn, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Some people like to see the numbers next to their name go up. for some, it their post count on a forum, their level in WoW, or their "number of submissions made popular" count on your digg profile.
People want to feel special. - Tchaikovsky08, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I was hoping the answers wouldn't be "because people want to feel popular/special/etc." and actually have some sort of tangible reason for caring about getting a story on the front page. Now I just think the people who complain about submitting story X but not getting the credit when someone else submits it a few days later to the tune of 1,000 more digs are a little pathetic. Not in the 40-year-old-stay-at-home-basement-dweller way, but the these-people-should-probably-do-more-with-their-lives way. Though I'm sure more than a few are of the former ilk.
- ClosedOffice, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Digg is about traffic and if your submission doesn't get a lot of diggs quickly it doesn't get much traffic. I have a site with writing that seemed to me to be quite high quality so I thought I'd finally submit something after reading here for years.
- luke16, on 07/03/2008, -3/+118This is Digg:

MrBabyMan/Badwithcomputers/MakiMaki/Zaibatsu- WallnutBoy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+15Congratulations. You win! =D
Except you forgot about ZeroPunctuation videos and self-hating articles about why/how Digg is going downhill. - jjcyber, on 07/03/2008, -2/+4You sir, get a digg up! You've accurately depicted digg in it's current form. People continuously deny the fact that digg is slowly becoming a poorman's /b/ (not that I mind, being an old /b/tard) however, you'll undoubtedly find the same topics discussed here in /b/. And prolly with better pics and opinions to boot. IMHO
- Tophillious, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3This was a triumph!
Yes, I did just bring Portal quotes back.- Thorlord, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3you can't bring back what never left.
- rezonq3, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5I'm confused...Isn't this everything there is in life?
/sarcasm in case you missed it - Texmurphy01, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1And you didn't mention any Apple products or Ron Paul. Are you new here?
- footfwd, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Don't forget new iPhone hack let's you use Linux to download the new unbuntu update while simultaneously spamming RIAA lawyers email address's while rotating LOLZ cats icons keep you entertained through
another sexless night.
- WallnutBoy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+15Congratulations. You win! =D
- gasoline, on 07/03/2008, -8/+3Omg, that guy needs to get a life.
- majortom1981, on 07/03/2008, -3/+0Exactly. when a scare tatic story from a non known website comes to the front page claiming we will attack iran and a cnn article showing that relationship with iran is getting much better and a breakthrough is coming between the us and iran doesnt get to the front page then you know this is true.
- Sunnygurm, on 07/03/2008, -7/+2"...well established reputation with Digg users, or the submitter must have a profile lavished with friends and be In the Know of the Digg systematic..."
It's a website...get over it. - Neo829, on 07/03/2008, -2/+11I expected the article to just say "make sure your article is from The Huffington Post."
Also, this guy's writing style is really annoying. The little "oh, look how I am self-analyzing my own writing in the middle of my article" thing got old quick. - mychaleg, on 07/03/2008, -1/+10If not getting content you didn't even create on the front page of digg troubles you, you need to get some sun. You want a pat on the back for surfing the internet? In the grand scheme of things what the hell does it matter? Most of the stuff posted on here is effin LAME anyway...why strive to be popular in the midst of mediocrity? Making the front page of digg is like getting a gold medal - in the Special Olympics. Seacrest out.
- Kizilbash, on 07/03/2008, -2/+3And this is different from the way the MSM works, how?
- bryanwebster, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6I hardly even bother to submit to digg because it is pointless. I just read it, mainly the popular section (first few pages) and now the upcoming a bit more now I have the recommendation thingy.
- zohaibusman, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6Point 3- Multiple Accounts.
The Problem:
I don't have multiple accounts but i have lots of friends in my office with digg.com account.
once digg.com banned my account bcoz my post's got diggs from same IP Address.
Its not my Fault :( - blumpyX, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3digg is a great site that i check daily but i am really not that bothered about submitting/contributing as people like mrbaby and others just relentlessly steal others submissions. Of course though, if they didnt have all the fans they have, they wouldnt get dugg up, and it can be argued that it's better that an article is submitted twice rather than not read at all. All I am saying is that I cant be bothered to contribute as it seems that unless I have a million fans and friends; it wont get on the front page. If I ever do see something you lot should read, I will just mail makimaki or msaleen or someone and get them to submit - would be pointless if I do it.
- shaneb92, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1Well, this was an obvious ploy in his experiment to get to the front page of digg. But I dugg it, and kudos to him for it. He will enjoy his five to thirty minutes of front-page glory. And nice guide, too.
- moxley, on 07/03/2008, -3/+3WHY DO YOU CARE?
Why? Do you think it means something to get a story popular or on the front page?
Will you put it on your resume?
How about this: You submit something. if it is good or interesting, then it will probably get popular.
IF that isn't how it works; if making stories get to the front page is all about politics and scamming and popularity, then the site will become less and less credible as time goes on - so it is in the best interests of Digg to ensure that this is not the case and not the only driver of story popularity.
I like Digg because in general it is a better amalgamation of news than you'll get on TV news or mainstream news sites....And there is funny ***** here. - flashback99, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I thought this article was going to set the record straight on certain controversial articles. oh well...
- trenchfever, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Botnets are the best bet.
- Owwmykneecap, on 07/03/2008, -0/+15I submitted an article it got 10 diggs
2 days later a dupe appeared on page one.
i wouldn't care but, it would have been nicer to discuss the article when it was fresh and not close to out of date..
to the people saying why do you care...think.
3 ways to get an article on the front page.
Have a powerful name
submit a guarantee (xkcd)
spam out friend requests...
None of them rely on QUALITY........- WallnutBoy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6I'm digging you up just because you didn't link to your article which only got 10 diggs.
- seeyounorth, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Same as high school-- popularity ≠ quality
- philathea80, on 07/03/2008, -4/+4get a job, or get married, or make the world a better place, or have some kids, or get a hobby, or go volunteer; it's not that serious.
- PolishLogic, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Choose life....
- chadell, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Digg is a useful resource for keeping update with popular issues. It is not the only and end all by any means. I normally use search on Digg to find topics that are of interest. Comments are useful when they stay in line with the topic. I'm not too concerned about the number of diggs but rather the content in the article.
- fx666, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2I think that majority of the articles submitted on DIGG in the fields of science and politics are very good. Frankly, I do not care about other areas, so I do not know what is going on there. I had many opportunities to screw the theory of evolution in my responses to the articles, and I am quite satisfied with that.
- Crisender111, on 07/03/2008, -4/+2DIGG is faulty. Shucks!
- netferret, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Got Linux?
- hellsing47, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Here's looking at you mrbabyman, XKCD and the HuffingtonPost.
- markgl, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3or maybe there are a few million users and the ratio of your story to the million others don't have a chance in hell.
