Life After Digg: Interview With a Banned Top Digger
nowsourcing.com — We had a chance to catch up with Greg and talk to him about life after Digg. Greg, do you think that you ’ve been given a fair shake? Especially considering the content that got you banned was front page on Reddit?
- 2067 diggs
- digg it
- suxmonkey, on 11/13/2007, -33/+98I'll be sad and disappointed if this gets buried.
- jcm267, on 11/13/2007, -44/+23I buried this as lame.
- astrosmash, on 11/13/2007, -36/+15This is dumb.
- ibone, on 11/13/2007, -25/+3I buried the F*&K out of this. lol
- mrfunktastic, on 11/13/2007, -36/+2Pron Raul for pornstar president
- ZeRux, on 11/13/2007, -10/+6I'm surprised that our digg overlords even allowed it to reach the front page, unlike this story:
http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/Top_Digger_Banned ... - JeffD, on 11/06/2007, -13/+50I clicked bury. Talking about digg like its a career and making this guy out to be some kind of hero for posting links to news on a website is pretty lame. Nobody should care if you've had thousands of articles posted on digg, if you hadn't posted them someone else would have.

- MikeonTV, on 11/05/2007, -13/+38It already has - http://digg.com/tech_news/Life_After_Digg_Intervie ...
- mrbubbleboy, on 11/06/2007, -20/+147I think it is ridiculous what happened to Greg. He should have never gotten a permanent ban for the image he submitted. It was hilarious and was hugely popular immediately. It got my Digg.
- Chaulis, on 11/05/2007, -9/+18Completely agree, 1800+ submissions and the same link was popular on other sites. Why is this the straw? I just don't see why we have to lose such a valuable content submitter.
- PunkRockRalph, on 11/05/2007, -1/+10i've been a raging whore for digg ever since i got started here around january. since i'm still relatively new around these parts, i dont feel like a complete idiot for asking..what was his last submission that got him banned? i don't know the community that well obviously, but this article was a really good read because it instated a real sense of loyalty between everyone, which is refreshing to me in a place like this.
- maci01, on 11/09/2007, -2/+34I'm gonna get banned. This is NSFW.
http://reddit.com/info/5z9st/comments/- PunkRockRalph, on 11/06/2007, -1/+7until this article, i never felt this underlying (hate to use orwell to express my feelings, as i've gathered its somewhat of a cliche here on digg) big brother theme going on, as if digg admins are monitoring our every word on this particular article. things are hush hush now, which is weird to me because everyone on digg is usually so active and expressive with their opinion, but now we need to be low key.
getting banned should be a low priority for anyone here, because it further glorifies greg's injustice. on that note, after following a chain of non-linear links, i think i found the "no-no" image that got greg banned. since i'm already susceptable to thought crime, i'll go ahead and ask in text if it is the marriage image with the fat nipple exposed?
like diggers have never seen a nipple before. and there goes one of the indispensible assets to digg. it really compromises my faith in digg as being a real "me" website where i dont have to fear being banned for doing nothing but enhancing everybody's tedious work/school day. ***** personal now. semi-personal, that is.- musicbear, on 11/06/2007, -2/+4There are diggers including me who want to see even more hands on control by the "editors" to make digg more usable as a social tool and as a legitimate news scraper. I don't mind the editors "editing" their content as they see fit on their own site that is FREE of charge to the user - whether I like it or not. Top digger? Get a life. If you didn't post the article, fifteen other people behind you will. TOU clearly states: Digg may remove any Content and Digg accounts at any time for any reason ... or for no reason at all.
- whutwhut, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2Anybody willing to describe what's in the link? I can't open a NSFW site right now. I am dying to know what got this dude banned.
- uidzero, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2It's a couple getting married on a beach but in the background of the shot you see can see a fairly large over weight woman walking behind them topless.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1A nasty hangy 40 something year old tit that should have been restrained in a bathing suit. I'm just glad it wasn't an animated GIF.
- PunkRockRalph, on 11/06/2007, -1/+7until this article, i never felt this underlying (hate to use orwell to express my feelings, as i've gathered its somewhat of a cliche here on digg) big brother theme going on, as if digg admins are monitoring our every word on this particular article. things are hush hush now, which is weird to me because everyone on digg is usually so active and expressive with their opinion, but now we need to be low key.

- maci01, on 11/09/2007, -2/+34I'm gonna get banned. This is NSFW.
- ZeRux, on 11/05/2007, -12/+6Time for another 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0, IMHO
- nowsourcing, on 11/05/2007, -2/+1all your Diggs are belong to us.
- FrankButcher, on 11/05/2007, -8/+2Everyone who posts a comment on this story gets onto the "Ban at first infraction" Digg watch list. You have been warned.
- zaibatsu, on 11/06/2007, -19/+86Greg has always been a great friend on Digg. And I don't mean just the Digging my ***** friend. We've talk voice many times and I love his passion about politics, the environment and the world. It's a huge loss to have such a bright light snuffed out on a site like Digg.
- merdiesel, on 11/05/2007, -3/+32"And I don't mean just the Digging my ***** friend."
rofl.- nowsourcing, on 11/05/2007, -2/+4hey a man like zaibatsu can get away with saying stuff like "***** friend"
- Ninjab3ar, on 11/06/2007, -4/+18Woah, you "talk voice"? thats intense, man! I wish I was as extreme as you.
- SilentJay74, on 11/05/2007, -2/+8Greg was a good submitter. Maybe if people would start submitting actual stories instead of another kid getting kicked in the nuts, then maybe the quality of Digg can be improved.
- tyywebb, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Ummmmm.....ehhh..........hmm.
- merdiesel, on 11/05/2007, -3/+32"And I don't mean just the Digging my ***** friend."
- RicDesan, on 11/07/2007, -13/+71hmmm, with his 4th infraction being something that frivilous and FUNNY ... it looks like you dont want to be disliked by our Digg overlords! Whats really sad is that with all the lame and stale front page content these days, Digg could use Greg here more than ever!! All the best man! MAy have to take a look at the Mixx site too!
- cdahlkvist, on 11/06/2007, -4/+5"with his 4th infraction"
I wonder if that excuse would hold water with the police: "Well, I've met over 1800 people, officer. I only killed 4 of them."
Rules are rules.- homer420032003, on 11/06/2007, -2/+2Your an idiot.

- iching, on 11/05/2007, -14/+41Greg was a mutual friend of mine and a great digger, I have posted and supported these threads in the past and even when they get to be at 100 or so posts they don't make it out of basement for the rest of the digg world to see. Its a shame.
- cawpin, on 11/05/2007, -2/+5A mutual friend of yours and......? You don't know what that means do you?
- verge, on 11/05/2007, -6/+25i don't get it.. he gets the boot, and even pizzler might agree that her post, currently fp'ed pushes limits on more than 1 count.
http://digg.com/business_finance/How_much_do_male_ ...- zaibatsu, on 11/05/2007, -14/+31I will fight the good fight for this guy, and even put my rep. on the line for him. I'll never give up and never surrender. If the cause is just... okay you guys get the idea.
Let him back on Digg- mattsw84, on 11/06/2007, -14/+35Your rep online? lmao.
- SilentJay74, on 11/05/2007, -7/+6Hey matt, maybe you should check your stats against Zaibatsu's before you open your mouth and look like a total ass. Zaibatsu has been around for a long time. Not just on Digg.
- acceptab1euname, on 11/06/2007, -5/+34INTERNET: SERIOUS BUSINESS.
- musicbear, on 11/05/2007, -5/+4Because NO ONE has ever recreated an account on line anonymously... oh no...
- SilentJay74, on 11/05/2007, -4/+4I love how people do not read the article. HIS IP WAS BANNED. He cannot create a new account.
- cdahlkvist, on 11/05/2007, -1/+3Right, because IPs are so hard to come by and no one knows how to use a proxy.
- SilentJay74, on 11/05/2007, -4/+4I love how people do not read the article. HIS IP WAS BANNED. He cannot create a new account.
- mattsw84, on 11/06/2007, -14/+35Your rep online? lmao.
- HotSauce750, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1I don't see how text with info regarding career options can be compared with an image that, if on your screen when your boss walks by, can get you a none too happy meeting.
- GRIMREAPER187, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1how can "Good luck and I hope to see you slamming your ***** into Taylor Rain's ass in the near future." not as bad as a fat ladies boobies?
- zaibatsu, on 11/05/2007, -14/+31I will fight the good fight for this guy, and even put my rep. on the line for him. I'll never give up and never surrender. If the cause is just... okay you guys get the idea.
- WordsnCollision, on 11/05/2007, -10/+19VERY interesting - thanks for posting this!
- Tomboys, on 11/05/2007, -9/+28I haven't been active as long as many of you have... but in playing catch up I can say I hold Greg in high esteem. I loved his diggs. The one that got him banned was great! But even greater were his political diggs. I really hope digg reconsiders and brings him back. We need him!
- somespecial, on 11/06/2007, -8/+64What happened
- zaibatsu, on 11/14/2007, -29/+15A really good digger got banned

- thirdoffive, on 11/06/2007, -6/+4I read his blog and he got banned over posting a funny picture with boobs. I didn't know digg banned for boobs... I like this place less now...
- somespecial, on 11/06/2007, -3/+7after reading his blog, i found out why - because he posted a topless photo
- funkyjunk3, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3He posted this link to digg: http://reddit.com/info/5z9st/comments/
Follow through the reddit link.

- zaibatsu, on 11/14/2007, -29/+15A really good digger got banned
- puto, on 11/06/2007, -35/+13digg is a joke
- zaibatsu, on 11/05/2007, -6/+20In this particular instance you might be right
- Racerx52, on 11/05/2007, -8/+8He's right. I come to digg to get my chuckle at "LOL GUY FALLS DOWN STEPS" or, "HILARIOUS PIC!"
And then go to reddit for interesting news.- lordtyros, on 11/05/2007, -3/+13If by "interesting news" you mean conspiracy theories and cat pictures, then I agree.
- skidmarks085, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1I am going to have to agree with you also. There are advantages to community driven sites, but some of them actually devolve over time. I think this has happened to Digg.
- hansk, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1your name 'puto' is very apt.
- SeaMowse, on 11/05/2007, -6/+29I mentioned this in another Greg-banned related thread: Moojj was banned for the same reason - an article he submitted had a picture of a 'boob'. He apologized and was reinstated. He resubmitted the article with his avatar placed over the offending boob. And I believe the article FP'd! Granted, this guy has been banned before, but for minor infractions. I'm not sure if Moojj has been banned before, but I've heard of members *ahem* who've been banned at least 4 times, and are still on Digg!
- verge, on 11/05/2007, -4/+10i didn't know that. sounds as if anybody who is anybody gets a slap on the wrist.

- dontencourageme, on 11/05/2007, -17/+5as a fellow digger who has been banned 9 times, i sorta feel your pain. Free Greg
- MacParrot, on 11/05/2007, -0/+5Sooooo, after the first 8 times being banned you still didn't get why?
- smex, on 11/06/2007, -20/+33Can't Greg just create a new account?
- AlxRymnd914, on 11/05/2007, -6/+15well, they banned his IP...

-Kramer Rose. - mattsw84, on 11/06/2007, -6/+64This is a perfect example of taking digg and oneself far to seriously
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 11/06/2007, -31/+220WHO THE HELL IS GREG? SERIOUSLY. We come here to read news, not hear some pussy cry about being banned just because he can't gain e-penis points now.
- maximumsteve1, on 11/05/2007, -29/+2I think you're missing the point....
- CannibalTom, on 11/06/2007, -1/+18I definitely am, I don't know Greg, this site is down, vague comments here, I have no idea what this digg is about.

Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy, Greg'll be there. He'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad. He'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know supper's ready, and when the people are eatin' the stuff they raise and livin' in the houses they build - Greg'll be there, too...

- KevenM, on 11/05/2007, -6/+29What sucks even more is that if a problem or mistake occurs, there's basically no recourse. On two occasions now I've emailed Digg about glitches and problems and didn't even get the slightest response.
Mark my words - lack of service has brought down bigger companies than Digg.- tehxen3, on 11/05/2007, -2/+5It's not like you're a customer of Digg, you never purchased anything from Digg that's why you're not really entitled for any service.
- NSMike, on 11/05/2007, -2/+3Regardless, traffic drives ad revenue. If digg gets too crappy for people to stick around, then it's curtains for Digg.
- KevenM, on 11/05/2007, -2/+1You are sadly mistaken. User = Customer. Without users, or whatever you want to call them, traffic falls, then ad revenue falls.
- flux1, on 11/05/2007, -1/+0My experience is the same. A few weeks ago I noticed my comments get an auto bury to 0 upon posting no matter where, when, or what I post. Its always instant, in new and old stories, and theres no way a human can read them that fast. Yet after e-mailing digg about the issue, I still haven't heard anything back after 1 week+. I assume their silence either means they don't care or they themselves added me to some internal auto bury list
- tehxen3, on 11/05/2007, -2/+5It's not like you're a customer of Digg, you never purchased anything from Digg that's why you're not really entitled for any service.

- WeasleysGirl, on 11/05/2007, -15/+26Well, I am going to put my .02 in, even if it doesn't matter. I'm Greg's wife, Kammy...and yeah, he's bummed out, but life goes on. The "offending" post was hysterical, seriously...but whatever..TOS agreements are there for a reason and he broke the rules, he accepts that...but seriously, make the punishment fit the crime. Stepping off soapbox now...

- meshman, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1Oh my god!!! You poor, poor thing! Will he ever recover? My deepest thoughts, prayers and sympathies go out to you both, you must be devastated and scarred for life!
/who gives a freaking rats ass? - BSDaemon, on 11/06/2007, -0/+0"make the punishment fit the crime"
They did. On the FOURTH time being banned, they made it permanent. Who cares?
- SRSco, on 11/05/2007, -26/+8Shut up.
- dannok, on 11/05/2007, -10/+0Link is dead?
- InSectWar, on 11/06/2007, -0/+13Oh no! Who will save Zelda now?
- badjoke, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6I want to digg you to infinity.
- InSectWar, on 11/06/2007, -0/+13Oh no! Who will save Zelda now?
- sintaxi, on 11/05/2007, -16/+5***** you digg. this is *****. that photo was harmless.
- ffleming, on 11/06/2007, -12/+26Who cares about their ranking on digg? This is pathetic.
- leodavinci, on 11/05/2007, -2/+2If your account had thousands upon thousands of fans that watched what you dugg making it possible for you to submit things and actually have a really good chance of them hitting the front page, you'd be pissed to.
- BSDaemon, on 11/06/2007, -0/+0If I had thousands upon thousands of "fans" (but obviously they aren't fans... that's just ridiculous), I would be a little more careful to not break rules and get banned for a FOURTH time.
- Handcannons, on 11/05/2007, -2/+1The same people who care about Facebook and Myspace?
- leodavinci, on 11/05/2007, -2/+2If your account had thousands upon thousands of fans that watched what you dugg making it possible for you to submit things and actually have a really good chance of them hitting the front page, you'd be pissed to.
- davideparker, on 11/05/2007, -8/+3How unusual. A broken link on digg.
- ibone, on 11/05/2007, -9/+3Greg.. Smeg...
- badjoke, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2..ma.
- boris92, on 11/06/2007, -3/+15He was banned for submitting a photo of a couple getting married on a public beach, with an old topless woman walking in the background.
- brad3378, on 11/05/2007, -1/+1The photo wasn't even worth masturbating too either!
- winmywii, on 11/05/2007, -6/+15Does anybody really care if they are banned? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't affect my life on bit.
- nowsourcing, on 11/05/2007, -3/+4I think that someone that submits quality content day in and day out would care. Greg was one of these people. What's good is that he was sportsmanlike in the whole matter, but it still sucks.
- cdahlkvist, on 11/05/2007, -1/+2Yes, Greg was a huge submitter. Over 1800 stories in one year. Guess that gives him the special privilege of breaking the rules that he agreed to when he signed up for an account on Digg.

- nowsourcing, on 11/05/2007, -11/+4Site is back up. And Greg rocks.
- bonlebon, on 11/05/2007, -7/+11Sad to see the guy go because such photo, that's perfectly normal in Europe or in Aruba.
- AladinSane, on 11/05/2007, -6/+4And yet, still against the Digg TOS. So who really cares where it's "perfectly normal?"
- kidcodea, on 11/05/2007, -1/+3im sorry, but that picture, is totally harmless no matter where you are.
- BSDaemon, on 11/06/2007, -0/+0I think you're STILL missing the point. It doesnt matter how "normal" or "harmless" it is. If it's not allowed, don't post it.
- kidcodea, on 11/05/2007, -1/+3im sorry, but that picture, is totally harmless no matter where you are.
- FrankButcher, on 11/05/2007, -2/+5Where the hell is Aruba? Isn't that in Narnia?
- AladinSane, on 11/05/2007, -6/+4And yet, still against the Digg TOS. So who really cares where it's "perfectly normal?"
- flashboy131, on 11/05/2007, -2/+1for a tit? seems abit extreme. I mean if it was pornographic ok, but this was humorous. isn't this site for adults? (serious question)
