- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Pligg? Never heard of it. What does it do?
- hibachipenguins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I wish i knew too, I am trying to pull the site up but it seems to be very slow, curious I am but unable to find information... :(
- kbeeveer46, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6check out the demo. I don't want to say it's a digg-clone because it has a lot of features that digg doesn't have but Pligg lets you create a site where users submit stories just like here on digg. There are many new features that were added in the last few months (you can view them in my first comment). You can install Pligg without any knowledge of php or mysql.
- Yankidank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Pligg's a content management system. Link to Sourceforge project page:

- sjake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5fracking awesome, pligg rules.
- loriencfau, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Calm down, Starbuck.
- mattrmiller, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Hmm.. server is down. Might be nice to put a digg clone CMS on a server that can handle digg traffic.
- kbeeveer46, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It handled it just fine when we released beta 8 and that got almost 2000 diggs until digg removed the story.
- lordfoul, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Then I'll say it. It's a digg clone.
- toe_head2001, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2digg clone script to use on your own site
- nirav72, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2you idiots..you brought the poor site server down...I guess pligg can't handle the digg effect.
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3el servidor pobre
- darreno, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The digg effect is truly amazing. I mentioned my pligg site http://www.twangwire.com in a comment in this thread and got 107 hits to the site in the first hour. I know that's not major traffic, but that's just from a comment within a thread. I can't even imagine what the Pligg server got hit with having the story make the main page. The bottom line is you really can't blame their server, it's not a high traffic site so it's not set up for massive traffic spikes, like most sites aren't. The software behind Pligg seems to handle loads fairly well by using mySQL and PHP.
- loriencfau, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm not sure if this will work ...

- cvander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Happy b-day pligg. I was waiting this new version. Thanks for the good work.
- deltree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Here's an example site powered by Pligg:

Here's a big list of others as well:

- darreno, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I like pligg, it does the job for what I need. I run a digg style site for country music fans:
http://www.twangwire.com
I'm sure it's a really simple system compared to what digg actually has, but for smaller niche sites I think it's a great way to get a little community interaction. Try it out if you have a need, I highly recommend it!- raynar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0wow...all the stories are submitted by you...
Not to bust any bubbles, but digg will be the only site that can use this model now, because the only people that know how it works already use it, and no one is going to join another digg clone.
Hell, slashdot lost its status when Digg came along...to take over, you're going to need something better than taking a clone and adding a few different images to set it apart. - darreno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, most of the stories are submitted.by me. It is a new site and I fully expect it to start out slowly. I know there are a LOT of country music fans who have never heard of digg. It's a totally different demographic and a totally different viewpoint on how the Internet works.
I don't see the problem with smaller sites starting out as a digg clone, we're certainly not trying to compete with digg and we're certainly not aiming for the same eyeballs. Digg has set the standard for sites that allow people who like a topic to share links and stories, I see nothing wrong with it spawning other sites with the same concept.
To say digg.com is the only site that can use this model is just insane. There is plenty of room and small niche groups out there that I'm going to guarantee you that there will be a lot of smaller digg style sites that become popular among the smaller groups of the topics they cover. I'm sure as time goes by and I get more into the programming end that some new features will be added or existing features changed. Again, I think pligg is a great starting point for people interested in these things as you can't just go out and buy digg's software, now can you? It's a cool open source project, and there are some sites that are already doing well with that concept, especially the sites that offer "deals" and coupon codes for on-line stores. - Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have to agree with raynar, while I'm very excited to see a nice open source digg-like content management system I think people really aren't aware of the social capital required to have something like digg work. Look at this story, only around 200 people have dugg it at the time of this post, yet it took down a site for awhile which means thousands and people probably viewed the site. The ratio of lurkers to active digg members is astounding. If even 1/5 of the visitors of a website participated in that site pligg would be incredibly valuable, but as it stands only a few, very large sites with already installed userbases will benefit. Just look at all the pligg example sites, all of the votes for a story tend to be less than 10. Maybe in a few years the average web user will feel more comfortable with this type of system, but until web surfers enjoy participation more than lurking only very large sites will benefit from something like this
- raynar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Plus, most people starting a site like this dont have the chance to be on TV and use someone elses paid advertising time to plug their site *cough Kevin*.
- raynar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0wow...all the stories are submitted by you...
- gh0st121der, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1You should instead all celebrate the fact the person that submitted this story has never stuck his dick in a vagina before....
- kbeeveer46, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2new demo at http://demo1.pligg.com
- portwojc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pligg is a great package in my opinion. The developers listen and are very helpful. The user base is also active and the forums are a good resource. I believe it has a lot of potential. I've used it for a while now and have been happy with it.
- MrZop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does that mean things get "Plugged"?
- darreno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It really depends on the site, I have seen some use of plugg but I prefer to just use the old fashioned "vote" term. If anyone can come up with something snappier for a site called Twangwire I'm all open to listen! Until then simple works, which is usually the way to go.
- neoknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@darreno
how about, string it! and then it becomes strung!
sounds cheesy I know :-|
- KingAR_II, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK, can anyone reply with (good) sites that run pligg?... The idea sounds good on paper, I just want to see if anyone was able to build a decent sized community.
- darreno, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It depends on the criteria that you're using. I think my site http://www.twangwire.com is a good site. It's got 50 or so members, but so far it's been slow going. Pligg is a pretty new package and it is going to take some time for any site to get going. The software is sound, but it's up to each site to find a niche and to get the word out. There's no magic formula, it just takes work and a little marketing.
- neoknight, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1to see something similar in action visit http://www.advotiser.com/vote or http://www.advotiser.com it just launched yesterday

http://www.gamelemons.com/squeeze/ - KingAR_II, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@darreno, at good I just meant a site that wasn't a demo install or something. Yours is pretty unique, I would've never thought of country music, congrats and good luck with everything.
- darreno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thanks KingAR II, I've been the webmaster for a prominent country artist for about a decade now so it was a natural progression. Actually, when digg came out my first thought was "damn, I bet this would work with country music" so I was very happy when I discovered Pligg! As an extra added bonus it's making me dive deeper into the PHP and mySQL end of programming things as I've never done a whole lot of that stuff in the past. No matter how well the site does, it's an enjoyable thing to just learn how systems like this work. If all goes well, some more country fans will find the site and find it as useful as all of us tech geeks find digg!
