- caball, on 01/22/2008, -80/+11Congratulations Pownce team. I love your site. Best part: NO MORE INVITES! :-D
- theprez, on 01/22/2008, -6/+24Pownce launches! ...and is not working. Already tried signing up. I get "Ack! There's a bug in our codes."
- Marijuana, on 01/22/2008, -1/+13So the question arises, who is this caball? And why is he praising something that seemingly isn't/wasn't working? Hmmmm.
- championchap, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9You think that's bad?
I've been a member for quite some time now.. and constantly i find that the site just doesn't recognise my username/password combo!
Anyone else have this problem?- sdcarter, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3No. You're probably doing it wrong.
- BradMW, on 01/22/2008, -5/+14It wouldn't be any easier to realize you're a shill even if you had a huge neon sign that said "I AM A SHILL." Pownce is an awful tool and anyone using it is an idiot.
- iridescence, on 01/22/2008, -1/+7^^^ Sponsored by Pownce!
- theprez, on 01/22/2008, -6/+24Pownce launches! ...and is not working. Already tried signing up. I get "Ack! There's a bug in our codes."
- popltree2, on 01/22/2008, -51/+10Replies from the desktop app?!? w00t. Will have to try the find friends feature too.
- Scynet, on 01/22/2008, -7/+22Heh, you underestimate the human ability to detect *****, mr. "PR team"....
- popltree2, on 01/22/2008, -1/+2Me? PR? Ha! That's a good one. Didn't mean to come off sounding like a PR person if I did.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Any collective that asks me to download an app that that didn't allow me to reply or read replies to their services standard would sound both pretty useless to me and totally shady.
- popltree2, on 01/22/2008, -1/+2Me? PR? Ha! That's a good one. Didn't mean to come off sounding like a PR person if I did.
- NoShelterHere, on 01/22/2008, -6/+3I'd look into the "find friends" feature IRL. pownce, not so much.
- AriaStar, on 01/22/2008, -2/+5Love you, but this reply fails.
Slap cheese on your head now.
- Scynet, on 01/22/2008, -7/+22Heh, you underestimate the human ability to detect *****, mr. "PR team"....
- drcreek, on 01/22/2008, -17/+118Aww. Now I can't sell invites for gold in WoW. :(
- markwilcox, on 01/22/2008, -5/+56Must be time to stop playing WoW.... hint hint...
- robbh66, on 01/22/2008, -4/+82You couldn't sell them before- nobody cares about pownce.

- sykotik, on 01/22/2008, -5/+102I completely agree with you. I read the digg summarization, then the site summarization, and immediately thought of my gmail account. I love how four features are a "ton of new features" as well.
- fkr3, on 01/22/2008, -0/+81They each weigh approximately a quarter of a ton.

- MarkOfTheDead, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Usually takes me about a quarter pownce before I'm sprawled out pwned.

- dikwad, on 01/22/2008, -2/+1approximately? so might not be an exact ton ? great, the lies start in the first sentence. It's like the Microsoft call centers, "hello, my name is Bob" (in Indian accent)

Pownce ... we worked long and hard to make our UI even uglier than Twitter's
Pownce ... now with added inconvenience
Pownce ... OK, so the people who got fed up with Twitter went to Jaiku ... but when they get fed up with Jaiku, we'll be ready for them
Pownce ... ever feel like you're talking to yourself?

- idiotech, on 01/22/2008, -0/+28Agreed! (well said, by the way)
After checking out Pownce, I kept finding myself thinking, "so... what's the point?" - flirtacious, on 01/22/2008, -2/+6The application provides a lot of potential that Facebook does not, even without any friends.. But friends are really what gets em to click sign up, so I think if Facebook comes out with a desktop companion app Pownce is Pwned.

YES! +460 - theOster, on 01/22/2008, -0/+7ok, i'm old. is pownce the next myspace/facebook/twitter? i mean, is it anything worth looking into? (i actually singed up, but it looks lame)
- mariachi, on 01/22/2008, -2/+1yeah - definitely. you should do that. go spend a few years on it and get back to us.

- steveoco, on 01/22/2008, -16/+208Lol, after checking pownce out I thought pownce fills no niche I can think of. There are alternatives that do the job much better.

- tzmguitarist, on 01/22/2008, -8/+2I really tried very hard to recruit friends to use the service. I had so much fun using it but I couldn't convert anyone from Twitter or Jaiku. :-/
- antifreze, on 01/22/2008, -7/+1the only benefit I see.... maybe getting a large group together to have a private digg-clone so you can filter out some of the (in your opinion) trash stories that consistently get dugg. but past that... no clue.
- sickswaystop, on 01/22/2008, -0/+7agreed, I think kevin & co. probably put this together in hopes of attracting mainly the digg users and then selling it. Whats wrong with that?
- dbug, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Indeed. It is so obviously just another pretty lame attempt to create a large user base with the sole purpose of selling out to google at some point.
Can't people think up new and original get-rich-quick schemes anymore or what? zZzZzZzz
- dbug, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Indeed. It is so obviously just another pretty lame attempt to create a large user base with the sole purpose of selling out to google at some point.

Would you be so kind as to articulate these alternatives? I'm no pownce fanboi but I like the idea of being able to share links and particularly files with friends without manually uploading to a web server then linking to a file by email/other.

Where have all the checks and balances gone? - robuk24, on 01/22/2008, -11/+371I still have no idea what the point of pownce is
- iwatts, on 01/22/2008, -6/+73Like other such ventures I believe the game is conning Venture Capitalists with more money than brains into exchanging real money for the web equivalent of magic beans. :)
- toast24, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5Actually, from the interview that I read, Pownce is self funded.
- iwatts, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4It is. Although "self-funded" probably means some of the principals put some of their money from Digg and Revision 3 into it. And from an Interview from before; "To date, Pownce is self-funded (and bootstrapped), but that may change very soon. We're at a transition point right now, and Pownce will certainly grow a lot in the next year."
- kidcodea, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4no it wont grow. because growing has to do with users and their interest. its not about injecting money to keep a zombie alive. even a zombie witha lotta makeup is still a zombie.
move on kevin&co. - iwatts, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Who can say whether or not it will grow? Whether or not membership was limited by the "invite only" Beta, I don't know. But the quoted comment that it WILL grow was Leah Culver's. And I imagine that strong growth is predicted when pitching the idea to VCs, Angels and Investment Banks. Whether or not that predicted growth will ever achieve positive cash flow or turn a profit is the question. I'm in the camp that sees Pownce as trying to fill a void that doesn't actually exist. And that money thrown at it is more of a risk than picking the long shot at the track.
- kidcodea, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4no it wont grow. because growing has to do with users and their interest. its not about injecting money to keep a zombie alive. even a zombie witha lotta makeup is still a zombie.

- MarkOfTheDead, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Real life friends or WoW friends? No one I know has one or even cares about it but a lot of them frequent digg and reddit....
- roberto_deneero, on 01/22/2008, -1/+21It's to give Kevin something to do when they sell Digg.
- kidcodea, on 01/22/2008, -1/+2if anything it was a test tube of something to be merged later with digg.
- artofwar420, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Now that would be great.

- xenlab, on 01/22/2008, -15/+5I've had a pro acct for months. Best social network out there... for exactly the same reason that people don't get it... it only does a few things really well, and doesn't try to do anything else... its so lightweight that it can actually get out of your way and let you and your friends share stuff that interests you... and nothing more. its not a platform for ill-concieved 'games' and 'distractions' nor a place for displaying your ripped off 'individuality'. just a place to share msgs, files, events, and links with each other in a semi private fashion with a group of 'real-life' friends.
- scrappyvintage, on 01/22/2008, -1/+7Yawn

Either that, or he'll be on MSN shortly. Failing that, you could always hit his Facebook like you did with the party invite.- isewise, on 01/22/2008, -27/+3or his myspace, or you could text him...
- Archer007, on 01/22/2008, -0/+26You've either missed the point entirely, or you were brilliantly trying to continue his joke. I think we know which one this was.
- doctordbx, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8I actually think i should have stopped it at "I dunno I'll email him" but then I remembered some people in Digg need more than subtlety.
- delfin1, on 01/22/2008, -1/+17or just ask him, he is, after all...his roommate.
- xkorbin, on 01/22/2008, -5/+2Digg users don't make friends with myspace users! Bad Diggian!

- kidcodea, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2lol, enjoy your check by the end of the month.
- TheReport, on 01/22/2008, -14/+138I hate to say it and I know im going to get dugg down for this but Pownce really isn't an app that anyone I know uses, nor have I heard anything spectacular about. I have an account and I've tried it out but to be honest with you its just another application that wouldn't put me under if I didn't use it for a year or two. There are certain apps you just know are going to be decent and have a fighting chance. I predict that pownce without substantial growth or backing or any innovative features will be non-existent within the next 5 years, but who knows the game is still early. I hope the guys at pownce really proves me wrong and I know I'm a nobody that has no clout in the tech community and could spout off ***** all day and it wouldn't change anyones opinions but I hope they read this and take it into consideration.
- wentwj, on 01/22/2008, -19/+7yeah, I'm sure you'll get dugg down for saying basically what everyone above you has said.
(sorry, I hate it when people get all pissy and concerned about having their comments dugg down, or get all defensive when they do get dugg down)
PS. Please don't digg me down for this - phlux, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Agreed,
Additionally - the only thing i can think of regarding pownce is that Kevin and crew supported the "sole employee and developer" as she was their friend. While on one hand I feel that this was a noble thing to do on Kevin and others part -- as I would likely do the same given I were in their position -- I cant help but think that all involved should have looked into the business idea and said "wait - we really don't have a product yet - we need to come up with something more innovative".
as people have already pointe out, the service isnt anything groundbreaking - although I did make an account today hoping I was wrong... I guess Ill have to look at it to be 100% sure, but I suspect its not something that I am interested in.
other services have come up with similar if not the same service in the past; flickr/yousendit/facebook/evite etc.. even socializr (which I would NEVER use simply due to Jon Abrahams having founded)...- phlux, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1jesus, how about fixing the lame comment time-out before launching a whole new venture. I got "your session timed out" 3 times while writing the above submission - and even after, the editing feature failed to work.
- wentwj, on 01/22/2008, -19/+7yeah, I'm sure you'll get dugg down for saying basically what everyone above you has said.

- Trav3133, on 01/22/2008, -4/+43And the point to this is?
- kidcodea, on 01/22/2008, -1/+10the point is to prove digg was a one trick pony.

- BradMW, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6I'm beginning to think Rose's college roommate fell asleep at his computer one night and Kevin decided to steal the Digg code from him, because Pownce and his recent work in general are pretty convincing evidence that he has no idea what he's doing on the internet.

- RichGC, on 01/22/2008, -1/+14It appears to be just another messenger, as if there isn't enough trouble having people using the one as you already.
It would have been better off being done as a digg messenger, where you using your digg login, and perhaps see stories your friends are posting/digging popping up like a contact signing in or something.- RichGC, on 01/22/2008, -2/+2urgh, appologies for the gibberish, I have a cold and cant think or type properly.

Way to go Pownce! - Archer007, on 01/22/2008, -2/+6Use AxCrypt ( http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/ ) to encrypt your files before sending them, I wouldn't trust services where you have to login to upload.
- elvenseven, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Or you could use, pidgin's Off-the-Record Messaging plugin on your regular IM accounts to encrypt on the go
http://www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/- Mysk, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1true,but that doesn't encrypt the files that you send.

- elvenseven, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Or you could use, pidgin's Off-the-Record Messaging plugin on your regular IM accounts to encrypt on the go
- pitdog, on 01/22/2008, -2/+30Wow, you can send links and have REAL conversations.
Pownce is like ICQ, AIM, jabber or Goggle Talk, only with different graphics.
The most unique feature of Pownce seems to be its name. Come up with a new strange "cool" sounding name and add some message sending capabilities and here ya go - a new "promising" start-up ;)- truspect0r, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8The other great feature of Pownce is its endorsed by the internet cool-guy Kevin Rose and hot chick programmer who codes C in popular Cory™ sunglasses.
- JorgeGT, on 01/22/2008, -1/+3Well, it sounds like Ponce as in "Juan Ponce de León", spanish conquistador, governor of Puerto Rico and the first known european to explore Florida. Died searching the Fountain of Youth. I suppose his name will be somewhere in Florida (and I think it's mentioned in the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie) or in any Fontain of Youth-related story, so it's probably they heard of him and used his name.
PD: And Pownce looks as delusional as the original Ponce searching the damn Fountain: we already have instant messenger, kthxbai- Jakerius, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2You must be tripping.
- fanclerks, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Wow... I can't tell if you're being serious or not. If you are serious, then you seriously ***** up on the name. It's POUNCE, not Ponce. Pounce as in a cat pouncing on something.
- doctorfungi, on 01/22/2008, -1/+36Pownce launches? Meh...
- epalla, on 01/22/2008, -6/+1you might say pownce pounced!

- epalla, on 01/22/2008, -6/+1you might say pownce pounced!
- Thorpe, on 01/22/2008, -4/+10Pownce looks very nice indeed. I have had an account for a few months but just don't see this website as a place I can regularly use. I was trying to make use of it but in the end I just gave up.
- kidcodea, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2there's an obvious reason for that... site is useless and does nothing for the user. isn't it obvious? what amazes me is that the devs and investors obviously don't think like that. makes me strenghten the view of how something like digg is actually a one trick pony and not something out of cunning brilliance.
- deboosher, on 01/22/2008, -2/+49I'm sorry, but only Digg users are using pownce and no one is gonna switch from facebook or myspace. They need to just integrate this ***** into digg.
- Nerfdude, on 01/22/2008, -8/+2i... i GUESS i care. but that's only because i'm in some sort of rev3-ish euphoria at the moment. good choice coming to saint louis, diggnation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW9PulYpjGs- BradMW, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2This is a better comment than any of the ones saying Pownce is great.
- joecolly, on 01/22/2008, -14/+3I'm surprised to see that most comments are negative and that people don't see the point of Pownce.
The point surely is to make it easy for users to send and receive files/information and access it easily on your computer or a mobile device. Sure we have email and Facebook - but it is so much quicker to send files and such using Pownce. Plus you can access those files really easily using a mobile and the desktop application they provide.
Sure you can do it with an instant messenger - but you can only do that when your friends are online, and you can only send files to one person at a time. With Pownce you can send to the public or all of your friends, and they can get the file whenever they log on.- sockpuppets, on 01/22/2008, -0/+7I think you're missing the point that there already 100 different ways to do that more efficiently already. Get a gmail account, I guarantee the Google infrastructure is 1000x more robust than pownce will ever be.
- truspect0r, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6What can't gmail do? You can compose the files to yourself or use the gdrive. You can access them from phone and you can invite people to parties via ... e-mail.
- joecolly, on 01/22/2008, -9/+0Yeh but does it display all your friends files, images, events and such one page like Pownce does?
I don't know - maybe I just prefer Pownce to Gmail. - BradMW, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4I hope you trip and fall.
- alanr19, on 01/22/2008, -4/+13So its basically a messenger service? Yayyy another one.
Ummm uhhh... pass - ArthurArchnix, on 01/22/2008, -5/+29How big are the files you can send? Oh wait... I'm on Linux. Sorry, no Pownce for me.
- Eriksson, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9You can send files in Firefox (or your web browser of choice) until Adobe AIR launches for Linux.
- drunkentoad, on 01/22/2008, -2/+5or, there's this neat little thing called email. I hear its gonna be the next big thing.
- Aitese, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5Tell me more about this magics you call "email"
- iChainsaw, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Indoor plumbing; it's going to be big.
- MusicalGenius, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1In the last few days I've been completely converted to Linux. (This is the first time I've gotten Beryl to work. (Driver problem with my card) So I am VERY excited. It's working beautifully. Now my triple boot will still remain, BUT I just bought another sata drive and I'm formating everything I have over so that Linux will have more room. Simple: I'm switching.
To the point.... Pidgin is a great messenger.... what is the point of pounce when there are at least 3 other better messengers which are all cross platform?
