"Nice sentiment, but really your melodrama and facial hair are ridiculous." - B3N3, on 06/16/2008, -7/+2The Internet is a lie!
- heresy_fnord, on 06/16/2008, -8/+32What does Al Gore have to do with it? Al Gore never claimed to have invented the internet. That was spin by the media. It was quotes taken out of context.
- scalebane, on 06/16/2008, -0/+15Why are you digging this guy down? Look it up.
- akira117, on 06/16/2008, -1/+4I do believe the al gore part was a joke, though this is only funny to the people that know about the creation of the internet.
- Silentnite85, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1Let me get this straight. This... Internet.. It's made of tubes? Which bring me porn? Can these said tubes also bring food? I'm intrigued and would like to know more.
- moush, on 06/16/2008, -1/+2Why don't you look it up? Probably somewhere besides wiki also.
- randomerratum, on 06/16/2008, -8/+6Actually, he did make the statement - what people don't realize is that it's really quite true!
He was a key proponent of making available for public use the bandwidth that makes the internet possible - there was an existing military infrastructure that the military monopolized and Al Gore pushed to make a portion of it available. He really took the initiative to create the internet... the problem is, people tend to think that the internet was created by god or evolved by itself rather then being created as a valuable tool for commerce, not just a vehicle for porn and myspace- the republican party played on the people's misunderstanding and exploited it - also, it's allegedly top secret how much bandwidth exists so he can't really defend himself without alluding to a national secret. It was like you had a picture of bigfoot that was classified, and I told every body, 'he claims to have proof of bigfoot' - sounds crazy right?- walkea1, on 06/16/2008, -8/+4or manbearpig.

- BlueSkyfish, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Here's the attack ad that misquoted him.
http://livingroomcandidate.movingimage.us/election ... - zoom1928, on 06/16/2008, -8/+3He did say it. Check Snopes. From Snopes:
"I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
It's interesting to see his supporters bury their heads in the sand about the dishonest things Gore has done. The guy is a liar. Just admit it.- pensivewombat, on 06/16/2008, -2/+11That's the quote, but it's a far cry from "I invented the internet." Gore has always been a technology enthusiast, and when he did research on the pentagon's development of ARPANET he realized its potential and "took initiative" by securing the funds to make it publicly available, thus "creating" the internet as we know it today.
- heresy_fnord, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1zoom1928
You are a ***** retard that fails at reading. Check snopes yourself you blind asshat:

- gnomeh, on 06/16/2008, -14/+7I can.
- rompom7, on 06/16/2008, -0/+24If you look at the trashiness of the web, it is easy to think that the place of the first internet connection does not deserve to be remembered.
However, this is not about the web. This is about the internet. This is about a technological innovation probably as significant as the steam engine -- and they keep historical steam engines in museums.
If you think of all the businesses you know, big and small, you will find that almost all of them use the internet in some way. Even if it is just for email. It's not an accessory; it is a tool. - Tssst, on 06/16/2008, -18/+14Perhaps, because the internet was invented at the CERN, contrary to the amerocentric beliefs. And yes, birthplace of the internet is quite prominently marked and commemorated at the CERN.
- jamesrl, on 06/16/2008, -1/+35The world wide web, that is hyper text markup language (html) and hyper text transfer protocol along with the first web browser was created at CERN.
Arpanet was one of the first modern precursor to the internet employing packet switching to be able to send data to multiple machines connected together on the same network. E.g. a precursor to TCP/IP that manages the way data is sent over the network. - plingboot, on 06/16/2008, -0/+11http maybe.

- franl, on 06/16/2008, -0/+20The Internet (or ARPAnet as it was originally called) is at least 20 years older than the Web:
http://www.isoc.org/internet/history/brief.shtml - Hurricane, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Numbnut, the World Wide Web was invented at CERN in and around 1990 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, basically a NeXTcube running the first primitive HTML server.
It was accessed through an already 21 year old Internet (1990).
The WWW is a service on the Internet NOT The Internet itself.
World Wide Web DOB: Mid-Late 1990 (depends on exactly when you consider it being operational)
Internet(ARPANET) DOB: 10-29-1969
- jamesrl, on 06/16/2008, -1/+35The world wide web, that is hyper text markup language (html) and hyper text transfer protocol along with the first web browser was created at CERN.
- KibibyteBrain, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Well, from a realistic angle, if every important discovery made at some of these schools was commemorated, the walls would be wallpapered in notices. Even if you don't go to a big name school, google what has been discovered at your school, you may just be surprised. Also, College halls, especially those with engineering labs, are totally renovated on the inside quite frequently so it is very possible it was marked in the past, perhaps even several times.

- syaorankun, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8HAHA! I actually work in this lab for one of my CS classes. It was 3420 Boelter Hall until someone wrote over the 0 with a 4 to be 3424 Boelter Hall. At the end of the video, he posts the sign in some strange location, but that door is definitely not the one to 3424 BH. The "commemorative sheet" was moved to a double door that goes into 3424 BH, the one that you see earlier in the video with the Sharpie on it.

- HonoredMule, on 06/16/2008, -1/+5The question is, which site deserves the credit for birthplace of the internet--the origin of the first message, the destination of the first message, or (unlikely for this early form) some routing hub in the middle?
Given the ad-hoc nature of an internet without a central routing backbone, there is little justification for inferring greater significance of one location over the other.

What's more some things just aren't important Kitty hawk for example, the birthplace of flight, nobody goes out of their way to see an empty field in the ass end of nowhere same goes for a lab in a University. The internet was never a physical thing, in fact it broke down many of the old physical barriers that held back out society and as such it's is fitting no physical location should be honored.

Really crying about it? Seriously? Giant douche bag.
It is sad because it would be an interesting subject.- xSledgewick, on 06/16/2008, -4/+1Uwe? Uwe Boll? How are you dude? Wow, funny seeing you here talking about douchebags...
- carrtoonist, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6Agreed. I remember when a time when documentaries didn't even show the person making the film nor even need narration. The narrative was entirely the product of the editing of the interviews.
- gavin422, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2I know what you mean and I agree with you, but I don't think Michael Moore makes movies about himself.
- viper565, on 06/16/2008, -1/+2"It is sad because it would be an interesting subject."
Then make your own documentary, "Douchebag". - MiddleOfNowhere, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1While I also wasn't that fond of the "sad and confused" presentation style, at least Brad got off his ass and tried something that obviously has never come to anyone's mind: Try and find the place where the first Internet (ARPAnet) message was sent. We are talking about the medium that has changed everybody's life in the Western Hemisphere, so this is not exactly irrelevant.
It might also have been done with a simple photo. Or an expensive CNN report. Or a memorial website.
The only thing *you* are doing is complain about someone else's work and insult him personally. Classy.
- fletchsd, on 06/16/2008, -11/+19I didn't realize Dave Grohl was so interested in the creation of the Internet.
- radarplane, on 06/16/2008, -1/+1I thought the same thing.

- John370, on 06/16/2008, -2/+4In the video at 02:40, Room 3420 is clearly marked 3420, not 3424 as stated later.
- bosssmiley, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2"We've found the room two doors down from where the Internet started." doesn't *quite* have the same ring though...
- imontoya, on 06/16/2008, -0/+8I'm just speculating here, because I didn't go to his school and have no knowledge about what actually happened, but I believe that 3420 was a larger lab, perhaps with 2 doors, both marked 3420. Then at sometime later, it was partitioned off into two smaller labs, and one entry door was re-labeled 3424.
- anonymous457, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1obvious number is obvious
- pheedback, on 06/16/2008, -2/+12Jason Lee is that you?
- Cheddar79, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Exactly what I was thinking...maybe he couldn't get any more work after Alvin and the Chipmunks...
- xoticpt, on 06/16/2008, -0/+52Wouldn't there be 2 actual locations for the birthplace of the internet. I mean ONE computer connected to the internet is useless, and can't be defined as a network. I would assume that the receiving end of the message sent is equally as important as the sending end.
- webbles, on 06/16/2008, -10/+0Logically, though, they would be located in very close proximity, so much as the same room for both machines. This is of course assuming that the computers in question could fit in the same room together.
- cawpin, on 06/16/2008, -0/+12Except that the message was sent from one university to another, jackass.
- reddikilowatt, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Actually I think it was sent to BBN oustide Boston, at least according to Bob Cringley and his real Internet history documentaries.
- hexydes, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2Swing and a miss.
- cawpin, on 06/16/2008, -0/+12Except that the message was sent from one university to another, jackass.
- thespanielator, on 06/16/2008, -0/+28it's the same with lesbians, you need them in pairs
- had3l, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Well, I would say that the computer that sent the first bit would be considered the birthplace of the Internet. If you want to get technical, you can't really call 2 computers connected to one another the "Internet" either. One could argue that the Internet only started when regular Joes started to access it and before it was just a private network.
- webbles, on 06/16/2008, -10/+0Logically, though, they would be located in very close proximity, so much as the same room for both machines. This is of course assuming that the computers in question could fit in the same room together.
- webbles, on 06/16/2008, -15/+12Thats the problem with today's neoliberal hipster youth. They think they are so god damned important, just because they say they don't conform to the popular opinion, while conforming to another opinion... We are the Jon Stewart Generation. And its people like this guy who de-legitimize our generation. When making a discovery, just offer the facts about the story, and leave your emotions out of it. How you tell the story is just as important if not more important than the story itself.
Oh and being over the top, emotionally serves only to reject rather than draw one closer to the subject.
Yea it is kind of an important thing, and I can understand why you care, but jesus dude, it isn't as important as things that happen everyday, like child birth.- ChantryChantry, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I'd take the internet over a child any day.

- OXyi, on 06/16/2008, -3/+8Duh.. I worked at UCLA...you can't ask the professor or the student around, everyone get shifted around so often, you are not going to find the real location. I worked at facility mangement, we have all the UCLA building blueprints since ...god know when ...by comparing at the blueprint at that time vs today's blueprint, then you can really find out where is the orinigal place, and not just where you think it is, because we do tear down room, and change room number around...

- thecorch, on 06/16/2008, -10/+9I can't believe this made it onto Digg. I think this is a new low for our community -- and considering Digg... that's very, very low.
- Devroush, on 06/16/2008, -0/+6submitted by Kevin Rose... nuff said.
- limbikity, on 06/16/2008, -7/+17wow that was REALLY boring
- geltoob, on 06/16/2008, -4/+324 minutes and 50 seconds to basically say he got an email from the professor who sent the first internet message. Skip the near emotional breakdown, and it would be 15 seconds.
- SoundJudgment, on 06/16/2008, -4/+20That guy is so 'dramatic'...his next assignment should be to find the Hospital Operating room he was born in and took his first breath, as the Doctor slapped his rear.
- unreg, on 06/16/2008, -1/+10Better yet, the broken condom responsible for his being
- Bviper, on 06/16/2008, -8/+4For everyone who gets annoyed at his "emotions" in the video, remember hes a college student. I would bet on that he had to make a video for an elective class which called for a "serious" tone. I highly doubt someone would go through that editing and "journey" just to show they found a room...
- FriedTurkey, on 06/16/2008, -0/+7Was the assignment to make a video of being a huge douche bag?
- wintersej, on 06/16/2008, -1/+0I'm pretty sure he is a Phd student that was doing it for ***** and giggles.
- Vietrmx, on 06/16/2008, -3/+26I was more annoyed by that annoying whistling sound his nose seemed to be making for the entire length of the video. Also that terrible, terrible mustache.
- CyberSol, on 06/16/2008, -1/+8thank you.
- TheWorm, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2In my opinion the mustache was the best part.
- lenny4422, on 06/16/2008, -2/+11So the internet was born in '69. Coincidence?
- asus2000, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Notice the end he made the date YY-MM-DD... As a DBA, that was the only thing that I enjoyed about the film.
