Top Digg Users Remove Avatars in Protest and Support of p9
tech.netscape.com — It is like a civil war or something.
- 141 diggs
- digg it
- fraggle35, on 11/02/2007, -7/+18That's because the Avatars stand out, and so are more memorable.
- circusbred, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32This is all a belated April Fools joke, right? Its just too ridiculous to be true.
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -20/+43Reported as SPAM.
Get off your ***** ego-trip and get a ***** life. - lordthor, on 10/12/2007, -15/+10yeah, wayjer, #13, either use the site, and shut up, or don't. It's simple. You don't make the site, we do. Without us, you wouldn't have any front-page stories at all. A little change, and it's the end of the world? Shut the hell up and get a life.
I'm boycotting digging any story by any top-100 digg user without an avatar, and I'm boycotting digging any story by you at all. - dmoney22, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1dmoney09:
get off my nuts - dmoney22, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1*06
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Wouldn't this suggest that they're working together, like people have been saying? Or at least playing a game of follow the leader.
- dan_cameron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3But it would be better if we changed ouricons to P9's instead. That would be noticible since not every member has an icon to begin with.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Speaking of top users... has anybody seen this profile? It'll make you laugh out loud...

He's 0 for 2780 submissions! WOW!! I guess its not all bout the numbers then huh? - jrobelen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0@infonote: Whatz Up Malta

"As you have all seen things are getting pretty ugly over at digg"
actually, we're getting it right.
thought something was up, it was a bit too quiet today. you know what, tough titties. i respect the top users and hope they continue to submit and participate, but if they're going to whine because those of them that participate in an effort to game the system got called on it, good riddance. i'm sure jason will be happy to cut them a check. - FerrisYJ, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20Who's (or what) is P9?
- grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7Exactly.
- scinju, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11P9 is the one of the most well known (ie. top) Digg users. His full s/n is p9s50W5k4GUD2c6.
- arkestra, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2P9 = power nine.
haven't you ever played MTG? - webonics, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5His avatar is ripped from the X-men III movie. Its the face of Angel (Ben Foster).
http://www.yugatech.com/ringtones/wp-content/uploads/angel.jpg
I appreciate anyone that participates in posting stories to Digg, but this reaction just seems to further the idea that the top 30 are in collaboration.
- grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7Exactly.
- Spies, on 10/12/2007, -19/+8Beware everyone, this story is linked to Netscape and is being dugg by Netscape's staff and paid editors like the spammer "wayjer" who submitted this story. Look at the users digging it...offcourse not everyone who dugg it is part of it.
Reported as lame!- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12i dugg it because i want the entire community to see this. and believe me, i am no netscape employee, hence my earlier comment is getting buried.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This would probably have more of an impact if most of those top users' Digg input didn't trickle to almost nothing since all of those protesting became paid Netscape employees.
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14BloodJunkie, dirtyfratboy, capn caveman, msaleem, wayjer, schestowitz
Since your're all NS employees, your gesture has a hollow ring. This is more akin to trolling. - raj3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9good point mozzer, after reading this http://www.calacanis.com/2006/09/07/digg-top-users-protest-or-one-user-one-vote-thats-the-rule/ it all seems kind of transparent
calacanis is milking the PR he bought via the top users all he can. - mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9raj3
Calacanis is loving every bit of this chaos. He's taking advantage of this falling out, and I don't blame him one bit. Digg is looking like a collection of immature crybabies at the moment. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Huh? Removing an icon is protesting? Ugh this ***** is getting annoying, can't I just enjoy Digg for what it is and just get my news with out Netscape interffering with their advertising.
- SbooX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Digg is looking like a collection of immature crybabies at the moment."
Uh... when did we all not look like that? - Scott2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1"i dugg it because i want the entire community to see this."
Thank you for wasting my time and bandwidth. Next time you see something that you think everyone needs to see, remind yourself that no one cares and don't digg the story.
- FerrisYJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3nevermind... I don't pay attention to the usernames usually.
P9 = p9s50W5k4GUD2c6
http://digg.com/users/p9s50W5k4GUD2c6 - andrusk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Crocodile tears my friends, crocodile tears.
marked as lame for the self-indulgent feeling of it all. - Spies, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5timewarrior, please don't misunderstand me, you're a good user, but you know what I mean by Netscape editors and why this story is being submitted to digg.
- bitrich, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5netscape are the best
- BufordT, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Since these people have left Digg, it seems like we are finally getting back to having more technology stories on the front page, instead of a bunch of politically driven hogwash.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -16/+13Christ, someone needs to call the WAHHHHmbulance.
This whole fiasco is so pathetic I'm embarasssed to admit I have a digg account.- da5idblacksun, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6LOL! No doubt. Protest by quitting not by some lame avatar thing.
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16I felt sorry for p9 at first, but this is getting ridiculous.
Gopher, hemphill, zepequeno, gwjc you should be ashamed of yourselves for even taking part in this farce. - hemphill81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Yes I just noticed something and I am ashamed in taking part in this now in some ways. The main people that changed the avatars are paid netscape anchors with the exception of 3 or 4. This is getting ridiculous changed my icon I don't care what happens anymore. Whatever is all I have to say about it.
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7...this is dumb. Are these users no longer going to participate on digg at all? Or is this some temporary "black armband" thing?
You top users were (and continue to be) instrumental in putting digg on the map and making it the successful website it is. You should stick around and be a part of the changes coming up - your influence is considerable with the digg staff and you should offer constructive criticism and intelligent dialogue where you see problems or have objections - not digg out. - gypsi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10hemphill, that's very big of you to admit.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Why don't they protest in a different, more effective way- say- never post again?
We'd all be better off without each one of them spamming us with 50 articles a day that we'd get anyways. The only difference would be that the really deserving ones would make it to the front page instead of all their crap.
To the "protesters" on here: Protest all you want. But, before you do so, why not take a look at p9's thread, http://digg.com/tech_news/Gaming_Digg_New_Changes#c2960255 , and see what the sentiment seems to be. After originally having a flow of positive comments in his favor, it's turned into a tidal wave against his (and your) abuses of the system. - dygitaljoe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Removing avatars is an act of taking away your allegiance, identity or likewise.
- tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I just think it is funny that the news posting came from the netscape website!
- gypsi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Guess what kids, there will still be news on the front page, except no prima-donnas.
In other news, top Digg users are all 8 years old. - tzon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Top Users Delete Avatars.....
Big whoop. Maybe they'll get a life now.- sheared, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10No kidding. All this "where would the front page be" crap is nonsense. The front page would still be there -- with stories. Do people think if they quit, news will stop being posted?
I come to digg, scan a few pages and the move on. I could care less who posted the story or who dugg it. If one story isn't on the front page, another one will be. It's just a pastime -- it's not like something actually depends on me seeing a story or not.
- sheared, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10No kidding. All this "where would the front page be" crap is nonsense. The front page would still be there -- with stories. Do people think if they quit, news will stop being posted?
- singlewall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Someone needs to accidentally "trip" over the DIGG database server's power cord and let the site go offline for about an hour. That might cut back on the number of people complaining about this really cool website that is free and relies on its end-uses to submit and maintain content...
- digrob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Who cares?
Top users go, there will be new top users to fill their spot. And it starts all over again.
I still find it funny people actually are arguing so much about this - it's a news site for god sakes. Do these 'top people' actually get a hard-on when their story gets promoted? Who really cares? - StokieBread, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4LMFAO, Removing your aviator, woooo what next? spelling mistakes?
- Squeeself, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Who cares? The only problem I ever have with Digg and digg users are articles like this: articles about people writing articles that whine about the people whining about digg. It's really ridiculous. Of course, I hate it when people whine in comments about these whiners as well. ;P Ah, I love being hypocritical :)
Right now, I'm waiting for this to all blow over so that I'll see tech stories in the tech section again, instead of ill-conceived political nonsense....If I wanted that, I'd read the political news section. - mk32066, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Wow, this just turned sour really quickly. I think we all need to calm down, and sit down and talk about this. They should open up a Digg forum about how we the user think this should be run.
- idiotkings, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I hope that was sarcasm because I couldn't help but laugh. "Things are turning into a flame war! The only thing that can save us now is a forum!" Oh my... good times, good times.
- MarkMS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is not protest, this is showing that they are wrong! If they knew they were right, they would make their avatars bright pink and green and show who is boss around here!
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So now netscape is paying them to make digg submissions on digg to netscape, back to digg? LOL.... reminds me of John Kerry... I was for the war before I was against the war and after I was for the war.
- vondur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this thread is gay.
- zoxed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Removal of avatars is a protest ? I already Adblock them all as a waste of bandwidth and screen space for all forums I visit. (But maybe that just marks me as an old fart!)
- Scott2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, a civil war. An incredibly useless, self promoting, infinitely tiresome civil war between groups of whiney divas with severely over-inflated egos and extremely poor priorities.
From MK32066:
"I think we all need to calm down, and sit down and talk about this. They should open up a Digg forum about how we the user think this should be run."
Maybe we should all just treat this like the non-issue it is and move on with life.
Gag me with a spoon, stop wasting my time and post news. After all, this is a news site. - EggNerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Obviously the ego of some posters here is seriously over inflated. There is no user here (or group) that can't be easily replaced.
Digg will be a better place as a result of these changes.
Those who feel that block voting in an effort to "rig the system" is reasonable - are simply wrong.
Either get over it or go elsewhere. The rest of us will simply "Digg On!" without you.
:) - hamoudi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about removing their accounts in his support? More effective.
- unreal32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm obviously in the minority... But I support this protest. If it really IS a protest.
And for the record, I am nowhere near a top user (1 homepage story). But I think this whole thing is pretty sad. Kevin indirectly diss'ed the users who do most of the work around here for free. And when people started a massive pile-on of hate towards those users, he stepped back and let them go at it.
I love digg. Love it! Visit it several times a day. I occasionally submit, but digg a lot more. I have 3-4 friends, and I always read what they submit and usually digg them. Maybe I'm gaming the system too...
I just keep thinking how sad this is. Please, stop this madness. The site should not penalize it's active users. If someone spends 8 hours a day on digg, submitting stories and digging, they should be rewarded. Don't change the alogirithm to lessen their contribution.
September 8th, 2006. The day that digg lost it's magic. - smohan123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't see the huge problem with all of this. Sure, if you're into getting your submissions on the front page, then you'd have some qualms with "gaming" digg or whatever. Still, at least for me and a lot of people that I know, we use digg as a pure tech news site. A technology-oriented RSS feed of massive scope, in other words.
Gaming? Big deal. I, for one, am thankful for the time that the top diggers put into the site. I get my news in one centralized location and the content is damn good quality, too. Sounds like a win-win. So please, everyone, stop bitching. Digg was and still is a great thing -- don't sour it up.
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
