Some people like watching kittens jump around a soda box while some people are more interested in what Bill Gates is going to do with the rest of his life. You go to a place like CNN expecting those news stories. Expecting to get something informative. If you want to know what's going on with Jamie Lynn's baby or whatever situation Paris Hilton has gotten into I would have thought that some site like E! or TMZ or something of the sort would be much more Proper.

        If you want to call Digg hypocritical since American politics are not featured as prominently here as people think that CNN should feature them, I can complain that it's not often I see stories about politics in my own country. However, I realize that there are far more non-Canadian diggers than Canadian diggers, so I check out other resources for more localized news. The problem here is that Americans don't have those alternate resources, to the extent that some people would like.

        For one thing, you can select which category you prefer to see when you login to Digg, correct? So your front page probably wont be the same as mine.

        Also and more importantly, even though its been mentioned to some degree, what news stories are displayed are controlled by thousands of people, NOT a few. This a revolutionary concept.

        In addition to that, as has already been mentioned, Digg does not pretend to be an authentic news site with journalists and so on. Your trying to compare Apples and oranges.

        I can't speak for the rest of the people on Digg, but i'm no hypocrite. I read Digg pretty much every day, but its not the only place I gather news information. I read a large number of others sites as well.

Digg is not. Digg's purpose is to let us diggers pick which stories we like, not necessarily the most important.
        The picture reinforces my loss of faith in MSM news corps. Instead of real news, they seem to be focused on crap that should be in those supermarket aisle magazines claiming elvis was found and aliens abducted someones cat.

      In Digg, one individual posts a link to a story and then a large group of other individuals, with no research, forethought, or coordination, simply cast one vote to promote that story for whatever motivation they choose. They may think it's important, or have a personal agenda, or they may promote bad stories to try to discredit Digg. Who knows? The important part is no one tries to know including Digg. There is no specific mechanism for quality control.

      CNN, however, sets their own standard by putting themselves forward as a credible, international source of news. They put editors in between us and the raw news who are supposedly experts in their field, prioritizing the information so that we can assimilate it and form an accurate assessment of the situation.

      Diggs mechanism, because there are no expectations attached, is fine. CNN's mechanism, however, has been corrupted by the business side of the company, short-circuiting what I hope were the good intentions of editors in favor of empty calories that make the owners money, the world worse, and the editors a laughingstock.

I was merely attempting to point out that what people are interested in is often the trivial and not horror stories. I completely agree that CNN 's decisions as to what they promote as a major story are bizarre at best; however, they are simply trying to generate pageviews by promoting stories people care about and will read.

I remember john stewart had some reporter on his show and it came up about asking some guest on the reporters show some tough questions about such and such. And the reporter is like, well I didn't see you asking so and so tough questions when he was on your show. Which Stewart replied "This is a COMEDY show. We come on after a show about sock puppets making prank calls." He actually had to mention this several times and the reporter still didn't seem to get it.

      News programs have totally abandoned the fact that they're news programs. They just want more viewers/more ratings/more money. You'll be seeing sleepy puppies and wii chicks shaking about soon enough on cnn...

        This definitely retorts that fact because it shows that while people want to complain about what's being shown, look at what those very same people do--they avoid the truth. They would rather click on sensationalist news and things that make them feel better about their own lives or are the easy things criticizing the more conservative in our world than to face the truth of what is going on. While he didn't click on the Britney's sister link, the links clicked were still sensationalist and more "pop culture" than real, honest news.

    Most of the news networks are going for ratings -- so they'll sensationalize everything and put in the most graphic details for shock effect. People don't care about housing, the war in Iraq or who is the current Prime Minister of England -- they want to know about the latest fashions, the bloodiest murders / shootings and where to find the cheapest gas and beer.

    If you want REAL news, you're going to have to listen to more AM radio and check out stations like PBS, NPR and perhaps BBC.
