- Bowie, on 07/02/2008, -7/+286Don't forget -- You can buy all of CNN's snappy-sassy headlines on t-shirts.
The only company I know of that actually celebrates how horrid and illegitimate a news agency they've become.- TekeeTakShak, on 07/02/2008, -8/+35Why just CNN? Pretty much any broadcasting station/newspaper does this.
- MadPooter, on 07/02/2008, -5/+36Read The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal or The Economist and reflect on your comment.
- GliTCH82, on 07/02/2008, -8/+4It's true, but then again most people don't read the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, or The Economist. Most people watch MSNBC, CNN or FOX News. So it's not all too surprising to find out, then, that most people don't really want to hear about the war at all, have already formed an uneducated or ignorant opinion about it and would rather think about whether or not they should tell their kids about Britney's sister.
- ruddy, on 07/02/2008, -2/+10"It's true, but then again most people don't read the New York Times"
stop right there. i have just revoked your talking privileges. - Spudster, on 07/02/2008, -2/+6Watch PBS or Democracy Now. They are the only two good sources of television news nowadays.
- RoflCoptah, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4that's why im so glad that digg is so unbiased, fair, and so totally accurate
- zombies187, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3If your news source looks like this, you need a better news source. NPR is probably the best most widely available source of reliable news. Although they often promote the war and accept offical premises. A 'newspaper' should look nothing like this.
- GawtMilk, on 07/03/2008, -8/+1Could you all SHUT THE ***** UP?
The reason this is the lead [the large story with a big picture for the uninformed] is because it's the most popular story the website. It picks it based on the "Popular News" at the bottom.
It's supposed to be trés chic Web 2.0. - Gookoo, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0web2.0 is so cool
- EmmSee, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Diggers care about mass graves & torture in Iraq?! That doesn't help OHB!
- toetagger, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1All the major TV news is now mostly tabloid. Fox modeled after NY Post and Daily News. Now CNN is modeling after Fox. Spears garners a large pic and headline but the war budget is practically buried. Dumbing down of America. Not sure it can get any lower.
- starmanjones, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1>Why just CNN? Pretty much
>any broadcasting station/newspaper
>does this.
i understand the criticism and its true in many cases. not this one. the brittney headline is a story that was assigned, written and produced... all that.
the side bar is news that is recent and just being reported.
- Ljay90, on 07/02/2008, -4/+60I almost got the shirt that said "John McCain Is Aware Of The Internet".
- f8pc, on 07/03/2008, -6/+5I guess that makes you almost cool?
- JBrown99, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7I always crack up when I see how terribly stupid the headlines on the t-shirts are. Someone really dropped the ball on that idea.
- georgetds, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7Dunno - just imagine if Digg started to make t-shirts out of comments. As well as digging or burying you could have the option to make into a t-shirt. "LOLZ - epic win, dugg up gotz tshirt" or some other dumb captions could be emblazoned across your chest even as we speak.
- richiewrt, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Actually not a bad idea. Could even give the poster a % of tshirt sales.
- IllBeBack, on 07/02/2008, -1/+1@richiewrt: I'm sure that somewhere in Digg's Terms of Service that it states that anything you post on its site becomes their property to do with as they see fit.
So, I don't think anyone will be seeing any sweet T-shirt profits except Kevin Rose and his pals.
- hotlatte, on 07/02/2008, -5/+4What's your issue again? -- that because that's the news you want, it's the news they pander to?
- Hrodrik, on 07/02/2008, -4/+18Isn't this the US version? They are reporting news to a target audience.
- bullhead2007, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5I think you're making a joke, and it's funny and sad at the same time.
Because celebrities aren't news. "what will you tell your kids about Britney's sister" isn't news. That's entertainment weekly, or some other crappy magazine that girls like. CELEBRITIES ARE NOT ***** NEWS. THEY ARE A ***** DIVERSION, RATINGS DRIVEN PIECE OF *****.
Sorry I just had to vent. - Hrodrik, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1No, it was no joke. The American people are not interested in real news, or things like this wouldn't be in front pages.
Keep them closed, people...
- bullhead2007, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5I think you're making a joke, and it's funny and sad at the same time.
- CMfly, on 07/02/2008, -3/+16Do they have the "Cheerleader gets creamed by football team?"
- Naieve, on 07/02/2008, -11/+165As you write this, the top articles on digg.
1. A picture of women in burqas joking about which is hottest. (pic)
2. Where is your God now? (picture of a hammer vicariously balanced)
3. Macgyver gets lazy and uses a gun (pic)
4. Chrono trigger coming to DS (gaming)
5. People actually pay for this crap? (pic of jeans being sold for $200 hand painted)
6. 22 year CIA vet told to falsify Iran Intelligence, fired. (Wow only 6 down to hit something meaningful)
I like digg, but let's be honest people, we are all a bunch of hypocrites.- Reddog_x2000, on 07/02/2008, -4/+63You're right, to an extent. There is a lot of frivolous material on Digg. There's no question about that.
But, to be fair, it's not supposed to be a "NEWS" site in the strict sense of the word. - Naieve, on 07/02/2008, -1/+32They are giving us what we ask for.
That is what to tell our children about little Spears.
It's not their fault we don't care, it's ours.
They are a business, they are just giving their customers what they want. - fudged71, on 07/02/2008, -1/+12you misspelled "idiots"
I hate what digg has become - radsprack, on 07/02/2008, -2/+12Digg is supposed to have frivolous material as well as the hard-hitting news stories. It isn't made up of just people that are only interested in what Bush has ***** up today, whether McCain has done something else showing his age, or something that is actually pertinent to what is going on in the Middle East. Digg is a mixing pot of people with different interests. Some people like watching kittens jump around a soda box while some people are more interested in what Bill Gates is going to do with the rest of his life. You go to a place like CNN expecting those news stories. Expecting to get something informative. If you want to know what's going on with Jamie Lynn's baby or whatever situation Paris Hilton has gotten into I would have thought that some site like E! or TMZ or something of the sort would be much more Proper.
- omnis, on 07/02/2008, -3/+4Though people truly interested in finding those stories, really should have no problem doing so. It's not like they made the Spears thing the front page news all day and hid everything else. Stop whining.
And secondly, this is from December. - bound242, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3Digg is dedicated to news and entertainment and not necessarily in that order. CNN however has the responsibility to report the news, educating readers. If we only have time to read one headline today, you learned that some insignificant skank is more pressing of a matter than increased war spending leading to inflation, weakening the dollar and ultimately sending gas prices through the roof.
- Bilabrin, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6Yes but on Digg all the headlines are the same size.
On the CNN story the BIG story is the one about how big a whore Britanny Spears's sister is and oh god THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!
At least on Digg we don't have to put up with that 5:00 news ***** because we, like George Carlin, realize that children are overated. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Agreed Digg headlines are all the same size and float down in based on a reader popularity/time formula.
Digg isn't just news it's anything intresting. Otherwise it would be Google News, without the automation. - MidnightRIder77, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4The difference being that digg is a user driven website not a 'legitimate' news organization. Turn off everything but News and this website kills CNN.
- proderix, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2wow 74 diggs and not one knows the meaning of "vicarious". precarious maybe?
- Naieve, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2You're right proderix.
No clue what I was thinking. - duffman5, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Of course Digg will feature topics other than American politics; it is a global website. Go ahead, Americans, digg political stories... but that doesn't mean the rest of us always will. We have our own politicians/politics to worry about.
If you want to call Digg hypocritical since American politics are not featured as prominently here as people think that CNN should feature them, I can complain that it's not often I see stories about politics in my own country. However, I realize that there are far more non-Canadian diggers than Canadian diggers, so I check out other resources for more localized news. The problem here is that Americans don't have those alternate resources, to the extent that some people would like. - GeoNine, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Probably a day late and a dollar short, but I disagree.
For one thing, you can select which category you prefer to see when you login to Digg, correct? So your front page probably wont be the same as mine.
Also and more importantly, even though its been mentioned to some degree, what news stories are displayed are controlled by thousands of people, NOT a few. This a revolutionary concept.
In addition to that, as has already been mentioned, Digg does not pretend to be an authentic news site with journalists and so on. Your trying to compare Apples and oranges.
I can't speak for the rest of the people on Digg, but i'm no hypocrite. I read Digg pretty much every day, but its not the only place I gather news information. I read a large number of others sites as well.
- Elderon, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I don't think we're hypocrites at all. The picture was very valid. CNN is supposed to be a respectable news organization bringing us important news and events. Digg is not. Digg's purpose is to let us diggers pick which stories we like, not necessarily the most important.
The picture reinforces my loss of faith in MSM news corps. Instead of real news, they seem to be focused on crap that should be in those supermarket aisle magazines claiming elvis was found and aliens abducted someones cat.
- Reddog_x2000, on 07/02/2008, -4/+63You're right, to an extent. There is a lot of frivolous material on Digg. There's no question about that.
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4Mind showing what the headline was 10 minutes before that? The story at the top right was likely at the main spot for 6 hours before that.
- TracerMan, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4No... this is why I hate US news!
- Mullers, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Let's be honest now, this is the state of the media in most western countries.
- Meatetarian, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Awesome. I want one that says "Four dead in chemical plant blast."
"Man with blue skin just wants acceptance" is a close runner-up, though!- MattBot5000, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2I just blue myself
- unpolloloco, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Someone needs to crack the t-shirt algorithm. I want a "It's not news - It's CNN" shirt
- xptoast, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Reason I don't watch the news:
It's not news it's gossip, exaggerations, a soap opera, rarely tells of anything good that doesn't include us winning over someone else, run mainly to keep the nation at bay from any real helpful information, hides things we should know about, etc....oh did I forget NOT ON THE PEOPLES SIDE!!! They are only on corporations and government side and only wish to profit and dredge up emotions in order to profit. So only a business caring about the bottom line just like any other business.
Screw you media corporations and all other insane corporations that exist!!! Screw you, just freaking screw you!!!
*storms off with eyes glazed in rage and in tears at the perpetuating and growing destruction of the human mind and souls* - whorunbartertwn, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1Why go to CNN if you don't like CNN? What did you accidentally type it in? Did someone do some RickRollesque trick to get you to click a link to CNN? Was it some weird masochistic self-infliction of web surfing pain?
Nah, it was going purposely going to a web site you don't like just to feel indignant.
Need hobbies? - Kruez, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2All right, take a knee...
You could argue that CNN having an article that might enlighten people to be better parents than Britney's and Jamie's would be better for Americans than focusing on something that will just depress them ;-) While it should outrage everyone how much these "wars" has cost, it hasn't. So let's just try to save our damn kids from becoming strippers and criminals. - vacantnight, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1A) Digg is not a news organization; it's a social site.
B) I don't think that this reflects CNN's disregard for the more important things in our world; rather, it shows America's growing disinterest in the real world, and like any business, they must cater to what the public enjoys to stay afloat. Thank goodness they still HAVE the important stories on their site, though; they could be FOX who just deletes anything that we are actually facing in this world...
- TekeeTakShak, on 07/02/2008, -8/+35Why just CNN? Pretty much any broadcasting station/newspaper does this.
- V3RT1G0LMI, on 07/02/2008, -7/+454this wouldnt be the first time we've seen this

- IllBeBack, on 07/02/2008, -1/+6It's likely that a male of the species inserted his erect penis into her hot, wet vagina and ejaculated semen there that was then voraciously gobbled up by her cervix and subsequently one of the millions of sperm swimming in the semen penetrated an egg of hers that was ready for fertilization.

- manningbowl135, on 07/02/2008, -2/+5Lol reddit is so much faster than digg.
- diggthis123, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3That is why I gave up the news in this country and switched to alternatives such as CNN International and BBC World - at least I won't get a scrolling "terror alert" 24 hours a day.
- viewdrix, on 07/02/2008, -3/+4It's because CNN puts the newest story as the big one with the picture, and bumps the second-newest story to the top of that list. You'd think people would have gotten the message by now since this kind of picture shows up every month on Digg.
- jbassfretless, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Everyone took your comment to mean that this happens often but I believe what you meant was the same thing I thought: I dugg this exact same picture only a few months ago. In fact, I still have it saved on my desktop.

- studdenfadden, on 07/02/2008, -93/+519Yeah digg is sooo much better. Right now the top 3 stories are: A day in the life of an IT guy, the dark night gets a new poster, and Christian Bale wants to do a 3rd Batman movie. As disgusting as it is, most people are more interested in Batman and Britney's sister than war and torture.
- bosssmiley, on 07/02/2008, -20/+214Difference: Digg was created for (and is still weighted towards) the techy/geeky niche market. CNN does not have that defence.
- fajitamelt, on 07/02/2008, -3/+25CNN puts on their website things that will keep people coming to it.
- CosmicJustice, on 07/02/2008, -4/+71CNN was created for the exact same reason as Digg, to make money.
- rotten777, on 07/02/2008, -4/+11fajitamelt: that's the problem. the average american wants to see that garbage. i think the original poster needs to restate the description in a format such as : this is why i hate average america and our media
- duffman5, on 07/03/2008, -2/+2Digg serves a global audience with non-American visitors. CNN is supposed to report on American politics, is it not? Digg simply doesn't have that responsibility, as non-Americans have our own politics to worry about.
- fajitamelt, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1CNN reports on a variety of topics. They have different sections on their website, including politics and entertainment. If you just wanna see the politics, go to that section.

- Jo9100, on 07/02/2008, -6/+47digg doesn't pretend to be a source of news. it's a source of entertainment, with links to some news.
- MuttProductions, on 07/02/2008, -4/+2You're right about them being more interested in stuff like that. but digg is not a main stream news outlet. and they force that stuff on people to make them forget about the other bad things that they are doing overseas and right here. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!
- smashingmonkey, on 07/02/2008, -2/+11If digg was another "real" news site, I wouldn't be coming here. In fact, I've disabled national and world news stories on digg intentionally. CNN pretends to be a legitimate news center - they have no excuse.
- undeadbydawn, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1which is why we have Current TV. on its better days, anyway
- Laminarcissus, on 07/02/2008, -2/+21Digg is not supposed to be CNN in any way.
In Digg, one individual posts a link to a story and then a large group of other individuals, with no research, forethought, or coordination, simply cast one vote to promote that story for whatever motivation they choose. They may think it's important, or have a personal agenda, or they may promote bad stories to try to discredit Digg. Who knows? The important part is no one tries to know including Digg. There is no specific mechanism for quality control.
CNN, however, sets their own standard by putting themselves forward as a credible, international source of news. They put editors in between us and the raw news who are supposedly experts in their field, prioritizing the information so that we can assimilate it and form an accurate assessment of the situation.
Diggs mechanism, because there are no expectations attached, is fine. CNN's mechanism, however, has been corrupted by the business side of the company, short-circuiting what I hope were the good intentions of editors in favor of empty calories that make the owners money, the world worse, and the editors a laughingstock.- studdenfadden, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1If you interpreted my comment as implying that Digg and CNN are synonymous, then I apologize for not articulating myself clearly. I was merely attempting to point out that what people are interested in is often the trivial and not horror stories. I completely agree that CNN 's decisions as to what they promote as a major story are bizarre at best; however, they are simply trying to generate pageviews by promoting stories people care about and will read.
- verbose, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13If it weren't for this story on Digg, I wouldn't know that Britney Spears had a sister.
- earthforce1, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5I might have been interested in her sister if
1) I wasn't already married
2) She hadn't got knocked up by somebody else first.- Ryansmellsfarts, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6Neither of those stop me
- x0mb13, on 07/02/2008, -2/+1didn`t quite think this one out huh?
- djAnakin, on 07/02/2008, -4/+4Digg isn't a mainstream news media company. If you're getting your news from Digg, you're a moron. Please stop living.
- franklyzappa, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Why did people digg that comment? Of course Digg isn't a news outlet. I find Batman more interesting than world affairs, hence, I visit Digg.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Day in the life of an IT guy is really entertaining.
- EvansHall, on 07/02/2008, -1/+3Digg and CNN are both just entertainment web sites, but the problem is that people take CNN seriously.
- maximoo2, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0The thing is, paying billions dollars for the Iraq war and mass graves found isn't really news. Like, it the sense, we've pretty much heard that for years now.
- bosssmiley, on 07/02/2008, -20/+214Difference: Digg was created for (and is still weighted towards) the techy/geeky niche market. CNN does not have that defence.
- duffy89, on 07/02/2008, -10/+80No sane person wants to hear of some minor "celebrity" getting pregnant, especially that little *****. These news teams need to pull their heads out their arses.
- fajitamelt, on 07/02/2008, -0/+12Um, what pays the news team salaries are the people that read the stuff they write. If people aren't interested in the stuff they right about, they wouldn't be writing about it.
- sodade, on 07/02/2008, -2/+11I think his point was that the majority of Americans are insane. I concur.
- leakus, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1No worries, the majority of people in Germany are insane also. Public TV is bigger in Germany though. They produce somewhat quality program. But they also like to take their inspiration from the private TV networks. I stopped watching TV.
- ghostoftomjoad, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1This elitist "everyone is dumb but me" attitude is way off. People read what is printed. If they concentrate on real news then real news will come back into the mainstream. they are failing us as journalists, we are not failing them as readers
- sodade, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1@Ghostoftomjoad - Come on, we are talking about celebrity "news" here. Turn the TV off if the news is crap. Flip the page, find something important to read about and complain to the MSM (and their advertisers). Idiot america is failing us all.
- leakus, on 07/02/2008, -2/+7People are interested in Britney Spears, because the media tells them to be interested in Britney Spears. It is much easier to report on Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, etc. then to produce real news. To produce real news, they have to take risks, like investigating stories which might not get anywhere, or set up staff, including security, in dangerous parts of the world. It is much cheaper to hang out on Sunset Boulevard and wait for celebrities to puke on the side walk.
- elnerdo, on 07/02/2008, -2/+4Wrong! Just like you care about seeing pictures of crazy things balanced, comics featuring a lazy Macgyver, and satires of muslim dating sites, other people care about "celebrities" that are pregnant.
You are just as bad.- supermanly, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2The difference is, CNN is purportedly a news website where in reality it focuses on this celebrity crap.
Digg is an entertainment site first, news which the MSM doesn't cover second.
- supermanly, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2The difference is, CNN is purportedly a news website where in reality it focuses on this celebrity crap.
- rdmorley, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3elnerdo nailed it. Why do we think we are any better? For every headline on digg concerning something of worth (FISA, Iraq, torture) there are just as many (I would venture to say far more, but that's just me) of entirely unimportant headlines. Hey, did you hear that Best Buy and Radio Shack might sell the new iPhone?
- deviouster, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Seriously?
- bobbi21, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Digg is not a news site. I think that's something ppl have to get into their heads. I remember john stewart had some reporter on his show and it came up about asking some guest on the reporters show some tough questions about such and such. And the reporter is like, well I didn't see you asking so and so tough questions when he was on your show. Which Stewart replied "This is a COMEDY show. We come on after a show about sock puppets making prank calls." He actually had to mention this several times and the reporter still didn't seem to get it.
News programs have totally abandoned the fact that they're news programs. They just want more viewers/more ratings/more money. You'll be seeing sleepy puppies and wii chicks shaking about soon enough on cnn...

- vacantnight, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Why do you think CNN had it as the top story? Because data most likely showed that people preferred stories like that.
This definitely retorts that fact because it shows that while people want to complain about what's being shown, look at what those very same people do--they avoid the truth. They would rather click on sensationalist news and things that make them feel better about their own lives or are the easy things criticizing the more conservative in our world than to face the truth of what is going on. While he didn't click on the Britney's sister link, the links clicked were still sensationalist and more "pop culture" than real, honest news.

"If it bleeds, it leads!"
Most of the news networks are going for ratings -- so they'll sensationalize everything and put in the most graphic details for shock effect. People don't care about housing, the war in Iraq or who is the current Prime Minister of England -- they want to know about the latest fashions, the bloodiest murders / shootings and where to find the cheapest gas and beer.

It is merely a subset of the news, one that does not risk advertising dollars or upset and viewers with the realities of what is going on in their country. Do not let your reality of the world be painted for you by 1 or 2 major media outlets, that is not being informed.
- filmbandit, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3this is a good illustration -- only 5 mins long check it out:

- JEM916, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Don't forget yesterday's news, where "woman dies in ER" appears next to "Angelina Jolie in hospital ready to give birth".
- codyodell, on 07/02/2008, -4/+5Here's a CNN/News alternative, funded by the Ron Paul campaign:
http://www.breakthematrix.com/
Looks promising, I'd like to see this wipe-out ***** media like we've been seeing more and more. When someone has so much power like the media does, they can do anything they want, as long as their viewers still act like sheep.- admdrew, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1It would be nice if you could see story content without registering with the site.
- codyodell, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1your a lazy *****
- admdrew, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1*you're
Not so lazy now, eh?
- agentfubar, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1you don't think this is biased by what Ron Paul thinks and wants to see himself? Come on. The viewers there are just a sheep of a different color.
- geneven, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0A story lauding Bob Barr, who was a major force in trying to impeach Clinton when it was 100% obvious to anyone who thought about it for 10 seconds that he wasn't going to be impeached?
Yeah, Barr is great, distracting the Clinton administration as much as possible while Osama was preparing to attack. I've always thought the extremists on all sides were secretly allied... - ciaran036, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I've got a better alternative:
Digg.com
Just stay in the world/business section, or you might run into some cat related or very technical articles...
