Princeton Study: Low Income + Less Education = More Pain
princeton.edu — A novel study that attempts to paint the most accurate and detailed description yet of how Americans experience pain has found that a significant portion of the population -- 28 percent -- are in pain at any given moment and those with less education and lower income spend more of their time in pain.

- bananabomb, on 05/05/2008, -2/+23Ever read a headline and think to yourself, "They actually spent money to draw this conclusion? *****!"
Yeah.- SpinningHead, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5In fairness, its one thing to think something is obvious or "common sense", but its another to have empirical data to support it.
- RX9735, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Let's hope this data provides some relief from the pain. Next will be a study that proves money can't buy happiness conducted by the rich.
- paradexes, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Common sense is no longer so common. They should do a study on that instead of the obvious. Kinda f-ed up they are going to say that the poor and uneducated are in more pain. That is obvious because they cannot get the medical care that the rich students at Princeton can get. And the fact that the pain is also emotional seeing as they are not being treated well.
- SpinningHead, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1It may seem obvious, but tell right wingers that the poor suffer and theyll ask, "says who"?
- ssmith2k3, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1It's also not just about the result but the magnitude of the result. The conclusion may be obvious but no one really knew the extent of the effect.

- nickcozy, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1This is not a new thing its a known world fact.
- guitarmaster, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2ouch
- tomjm5000, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6Less physically intensive/dangerous jobs? Poorer diet? Poorer medical care? I'd say it's probably way more pain.
- haiduz, on 05/05/2008, -3/+5surely the very rich and the very well educated members of the princeton community had no bias in arriving at this consultion
- jerbaker, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1What could the possible motivation be to skew the results of this study? What benefit could you gain by misrepresenting how much pain people who share your level of education or income experience? Perhaps explaining the motives you attribute to those you accuse of having a bias would make you more believable.
- nads, on 05/05/2008, -3/+2Dr Obvious has been researching again.
- nads, on 05/05/2008, -3/+4Dr Obvious and Prof. No ***** have been researching again I see.
- DoctorGumbo, on 05/05/2008, -2/+0Even though from the title it seems obvious, you would never immediately think to compare pain to education or income. I think this study shows how healthcare issues can be improved by also addressing indirect factors such as education or the economy. This demonstrates that reforming one type of social concern has the potential to create a snowball effect and indirectly influence other issues too.
- aspec, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I think you're drawing the conclusion they're paid to make you draw. If you work construction, or as a janitor, or a ditch digger... or even standing all day in a mcdonalds, I'll bet you'll have more pain than someone sitting down in an accounting office. Don't you think? Nothing solves this, we need all these jobs. The only differences are going to be whether it's you, or someone else who does these jobs.
- DoctorGumbo, on 05/05/2008, -0/+0The purpose of this story wasn't to simply compare pain to physical work stress. That's obvious. That's why they had the comparison of pain and time spent alone or time spent watching TV. Pain is not always physical, it can be a result of emotional and social situations which can be improved.
- ummagummas08, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Dugg for term 'ditch digger'

- vurdillac, on 05/05/2008, -2/+15Well low income and MORE education sucks too. You have to work the same crappy, no money jobs, plus you have to pay off your student loans too.
- popfrogs, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5English major?
- Rotzooi, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2And in conclusion, "It sucks to be poor".
Now give me my PhD. - Treoinmypocket, on 05/05/2008, -0/+9Wow.
Here's a thought - how about the next President (i don't care who) is personally in-charge of stripping every penny of Federal Funding out of stupid studies like this? - razorsedge555, on 05/05/2008, -3/+4ergo, more income + more education = more likely to make patronizing remarks about those less well off; and the corollary syllogism: more income + more education = higher incidence of being a douchebag
- petebert, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3this story checks out, I've seem them driving around Wal Mart on those electric carts
- DestroyFascism, on 05/05/2008, -1/+3But no doubt the employer will push them harder and offer the team leader "kickbacks" to work them harder, play politics and destroy families based on a grudge, a moment of ill regard and deception. If you are lower than the team leader or said persons boss, then don't be better than them in front of their faces, you will be in trouble for being "too good".

I worked temp jobs for 4 years. - stroger, on 05/05/2008, -1/+0As valid as this statement maybe, the real questions is, is the pain quantifiable? Causality states every cause has an effect. If there are people who are (cause) poor and uneducated that are (effect) happy, then the same variables can not be applied to those who are unhappy as the same direct cause. Rather the cause and effects remain the same, but the human condition is the filter in which we directly choose. consciously or unconsciously how the current situation makes us feel based on our preconditioned thought patterns. Food for thought.
- aslanrec, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2I'd be in pain too if I had to mow lawns for a living.
- pagit, on 05/05/2008, -4/+2let's send the rich kids off to war esp the kids whose parents are running the country

- hokie47, on 05/05/2008, -5/+2I love being rich. I love giving the middle class a false sense of wellbeing while I drink my Richard Hennessy and ***** my trophy wife. I fart in your general direction. I am rich and powerful. I don't care if you hate me, because I own you.
- stealthc, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Could this have anything to do with the tendency of Americans to be taught from birth to envy?
If you want to fix unfair economic inequality, get rid of the monetary system that almost invisibly transfers wealth to the ones first in line at the central bank (military-industrial complex, Wall Street).- silveravnt, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Crap! I dugg you for your first sentence. Then I read your ridiculous 2nd sentence.

Paulo - ummagummas08, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Again, scholars making 'breakthrough' studies that reinforce what we already know..
- Chahrlie5, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Didn't realize Princeton offered degrees in "DUH"
- noctu, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1let me guess the link to this article leads to a rick roll
- wishninja, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1So big drug companies get to load up on cash, basically selling us the same chemicals found in nature while the poor suffer. Its all just a part of the Drug War folks! If there were a legal right to heal yourself people that are in pain would all have access to cheap pain medications.
- samyoungguitar, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1no *****
- nydwarf, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1It's a good thing we have institutions like Princeton to inform of of the fact that poor, ignorant people generally have more miserable lives.
- Leomarth, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I think this is inline with my pediatricians anecdote that those with less education use more medical resources. Which is why he refuses to participate in Arizona's state medical insurance program. He wants to keep his office small and family-friendly instead of jammed with people wasting time.
- jbetancourt, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0So Obama was correct and Hilary supporters are in pain? :)
