Red ring of death returns at GDC 08 watch!
bbc.co.uk — Microsoft wants consumers to believe that its problems with the Xbox 360 console in terms of hardware failure are over. But wandering through the Game Developers Conference halls and it's clear that the problem persists. On Microsoft's own stand at the show one of the demo consoles has a rather familiar problem - the red ring of death.

- theaceoffire, on 02/19/2008, -5/+3Maybe they should have a customer assistant standing beside it?
- kirakun, on 02/20/2008, -1/+20Don't you get the point yet? The ABSENCE of the customer assistant is also a demonstration of the service you will get when you attempt to report the RRoD.

- zeejay, on 02/20/2008, -2/+32This is simply the first part of an interactive exhibit for the 2nd most popular game on the console, the waiting game.
- In the next station, you get to package your dead machine up in the "coffin" box, using real tape! Careful!
- The next station is a miniature UPS store, where you get to hand it over to the clerk, where he comforts you, telling you that you're not alone.
- Finally, there's a waiting area, where you get to sit for three weeks, NOT playing any games - scary!
- If you're Extra Lucky, you get to do the whole thing again!- TheDSL, on 02/20/2008, -3/+2I wish I could digg you twice for how absolutely accurate you are.

- markbrown, on 02/19/2008, -26/+12If Microsoft REALLY believed the RRoD problem was over, they wouldn't have extended the warranty to three years.
- KraftDinner101, on 02/19/2008, -9/+8So a company can't do anything out of good faith? The extra extended warranty is there to give consumers peace of mind. You kind of shoot yourself in the foot because the reason they gave the extended warranty is BECAUSE they think the problem is over. If they didn't think it was over, they'd be less inclined to give such a generous offer.
- markbrown, on 02/19/2008, -7/+4I'm all for the idea of a company doing something out of good faith. But MICROSOFT, really?
- GeorgeWKush, on 02/19/2008, -4/+7Apparently you forgot about the free Zunes Microsoft gave out when they couldn't deliver them by Valentines Day. But Microsoft is only trying to be nice so they can ***** us over later.
- Daniel591992, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3And the fact that they gave the first gen Zune users a ton of new features when they came out with the second Zune (for free) yet Apple charges $20 for five apps (two of which are nothing more than Yahoo widgets) which should have been there in the first place.
- GeorgeWKush, on 02/19/2008, -4/+7Apparently you forgot about the free Zunes Microsoft gave out when they couldn't deliver them by Valentines Day. But Microsoft is only trying to be nice so they can ***** us over later.
- BingoPower, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3One could also say that you shot yourself in the foot. You could say that the extra extended warranty is there because they know the problem is still there. If they thought it was over, they'd be less inclined to give such a "generous" offer.
- samdu, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5MS didn't extend the warranty (only for RRoD, mind you) three years out of the kindness of their hearts. They did it in order to avoid a class action lawsuit.
- markbrown, on 02/19/2008, -7/+4I'm all for the idea of a company doing something out of good faith. But MICROSOFT, really?
- Shaflugi, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Obviously the problem isn't over. They can't magically make old 360s not RRoD through magical wireless waves. All they can do is give people a longer warranty
This was a dumb move, though. Why didn't they put fans in those cases, or make special 360s that won't RRoD?
- KraftDinner101, on 02/19/2008, -9/+8So a company can't do anything out of good faith? The extra extended warranty is there to give consumers peace of mind. You kind of shoot yourself in the foot because the reason they gave the extended warranty is BECAUSE they think the problem is over. If they didn't think it was over, they'd be less inclined to give such a generous offer.
- Thrash16, on 02/19/2008, -55/+11sure the RRoD is a problem that needs to be faced but i honestly dont think it is stopping anyone from buying a 360. Its like with cars, you know thousands of people are killed yearly by car related accidents but that isnt going to stop you from buying one. It's the ol' human ability to believe "it couldnt happen to me"
- unicronband, on 02/19/2008, -9/+63Except most people of sound mind would refrain from buying a car that has a 1 in 4 chance of spontaneous combustion whilst driving. But when the only other cars on the market are the $100,000 Ferrari and a golf cart, the explosion-mobile doesn't seem as much an illogical choice.
- Topher06, on 02/19/2008, -5/+18Yes, but everybody wants the f*cking Ferrari now don't they.
- GeorgeWKush, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Not me, I'd rather have a Pagani.
- robdiggity, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7Mmmmm... panini sandwich.... ohohohohoohohohoho
- Spuy767, on 02/19/2008, -3/+2Give me a Corvette Z06 any day. I can run with the Pagani or the Ferrari, and I can get 27 MPG on the highway. No to mention I can buy a house wth the cash I save.
- JoranYar, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3how did this topic go from video game consoles to fast cars...
- quiznos, on 02/20/2008, -4/+1i'm high and lost my train of thought while writing this comment. bury me..
- GeorgeWKush, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Not me, I'd rather have a Pagani.
- Topher06, on 02/19/2008, -5/+18Yes, but everybody wants the f*cking Ferrari now don't they.
- Topher06, on 02/19/2008, -4/+28Your logic is flawed. People don't stop buying cars because they can get into an accident in one, they stop buying a particular brand because the brand is known for selling lemons. Its why Toyota is the best selling car company in the world while Chrysler is on the edge of bankrupcy.
- staplez, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4While I sort of agree with your statement, a lot more is brand recognition than ACTUAL reliability. Like GM makes reliable cars beating Toyota: http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2003-11-03-rel ... but people are still probably going to prefer the Toyota. Brand > Price > Reliability > Impulse buy. That's pretty much how I see everything is sold.
- Spuy767, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Toyota has been having lots of engine problems lately, they've given the reliability crown to Honda.
- nitrojunky24, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5digg me down

- Snuff99, on 02/19/2008, -3/+14Your logic is flawed in another way being that RRoD is the ONLY reason I don't have an Xbox360. Any business that expects return customers should know -QUALITY FIRST- above all else. Seems Microsoft missed that memo.
- legendxx, on 02/19/2008, -8/+5That is your logic? Are you ***** stupid? That's the dumbest analogy I've ever heard. You should have said:
It's like an American car. Everyone knows its made with inferior quality parts but people still buy it b/c its American.
That would have made some sense but it's leaps and bounds above your dumbass. I demand a reply from Thras16 explaining how he could have made such a ridiculous statement. - mnemy, on 02/19/2008, -1/+8Umm, actually, that's precisely why I haven't bought an XBOX360. I was waiting for the falcon chip to come out and plenty of users testing it to see if the RROD issues were resolved. I have a PS3 and a Wii, so it's not that I'm too cheap to buy it. I just refuse to buy ***** quality hardware that I will likely have to ship back and forth later.
- barandon0D9, on 02/20/2008, -1/+2It stopped me from buying one. A friend of mine got the RROD, and sent it to Microsoft. He waited 3 weeks, they sent him a refurb which promptly died after a week of use. Not wanting to wait another 3 weeks to play, he went to Best Buy and bought yet another 360. I was appalled.
- unicronband, on 02/19/2008, -9/+63Except most people of sound mind would refrain from buying a car that has a 1 in 4 chance of spontaneous combustion whilst driving. - STBAT25, on 02/20/2008, -2/+3At least you didn't say EPIC.
- BrandonMills, on 02/19/2008, -23/+9If PS3 started to get good games out for it, that combined with Bluray could spell trouble for MS.
Not Nintendo though...no matter what, they're sitting pretty :p- GeorgeWKush, on 02/19/2008, -9/+12The next Nintendo will have impossible ground to cover. The majority of families will own an HDTV by then and they'll want a console that looks good on it. Have you seen a Wii on an hdtv? It looks like free flash games on Shockwave.com - If their next machine isn't better than the 360 or PS3, they're *****.
- Rhendal, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7That's exactly what everyone said before it came out when they said there was no HDTV support for it, and look where it is now.
- BrandonMills, on 02/20/2008, -2/+6Free flash games on the web are more popular than you think. You might want to check sales numbers. Whether Nintendo has some of that 'Apple charm' or not, Wii is still selling like crazy.
Gamers tend to severly underestimate the population of non-gamers out there. - GeorgeWKush, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1Hey dumbass, you said it yourself, they're "FREE FLASH GAMES." Something that's free has nothing to do with sales numbers. --- If people can get equivalent games for free on the internet, why do they bother paying hundreds of dollars for them? It's because the people that buy Wii are middle class families that want to get a console for their children, but can't afford a console worth buying, so they get the Wii. Good point ***** face. Everyone I know that has bought a Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii has regretted it. Next time you feel like being a pundit, go fist ***** yourself, *****.

- vinecrawler, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11it only works if you cross two
- Seanmu13, on 02/19/2008, -32/+6You can also get the RRoD if the audio/video cables are not plugged in. So this may not be a hardware failure.
- GeorgeWKush, on 02/19/2008, -2/+49When you unplug the AV cables and turn the machine on, it shows a full red ring. The red ring in this video only has 3 lights, which is a hardware failure.
- doshindude, on 02/19/2008, -26/+5this is starting to get immature...

- BigBosss, on 02/19/2008, -17/+11I can't believe that... MS should be so embarrassed. Like... really. About time 360 got some bad press...
- xxgigavirusxx, on 02/19/2008, -58/+2Last time I checked.. the RRod is a full ring not 3/4
- Rizmaster, on 02/19/2008, -1/+21You obviously haven't been watching too closely.
- lnxfi, on 02/19/2008, -1/+35Last time I checked, you still had no clue what you were talking about.
- Kalindorno, on 02/19/2008, -0/+38a full ring is the a/v being unplugged. 3/4 is the rrod.
- doctorfungi, on 02/20/2008, -1/+2I had that once. Freaked the ***** out, then realized what a dip ***** I was :)
- DetpackJump, on 02/19/2008, -1/+24Maybe you should check again
- Dignan666, on 02/19/2008, -13/+2Check again. Its not all 4 red lights. Its only 3.
That being said, i'm not sure those are the right 3 lights to be an actual RROD. - tattertech, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10Then the last time you checked was wrong. A full ring actually isn't a big deal (it means AV cables aren't inserted correctly). Three of the four is the infamous one.
- JusticeFriend, on 02/20/2008, -1/+4WTF?
I don't own a x360, but I easily recognize a RRoD. - Bologner, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd you're an idiot.
- BearinG, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3I hope you sent in your console to Microsoft for 4 red lights.. that willl teach you to pay attention

- Synthesize, on 02/19/2008, -5/+42It's clearly 3 red lights. Sucks for Microsoft, because they have to wait 1 month before getting a replacement just in time for the rest of GDC. ;)
Why the ***** are people comparing Cars to the Xbox 360?- fancyj, on 02/19/2008, -3/+2I think the 360 to a 78 Pinto is about right.

- Mjv21, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Why the ***** would you imply that I stole them. I had mine RRoD and tried it figuring I had nothing to lose. When it worked, naturally I bragged about it to everyone I knew, and ended up fixing 2 more.
- DarkShroud, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6The towel trcik damages the 360 even further. If's because of retarded ***** suckers like you that the refurbs fail so much.

- monkeyflingpoo, on 02/19/2008, -8/+29After 2 dead Xbox 360s I just built a PC. Most Xbox 360 games eventually go to PC anyways. I'm not saying everyone should sell their 360s but PC is still a great gaming platform and PC gamers still get the love that the 360 does... just a little delayed.
- YouRookies, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5Yup, just got a 360 this week and I'm having a hard time getting games for it. Everything that is AAA besides Halo is already on my PC.
- countingthedays, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5In a few weeks, you'll have a new Rainbow Six, and a few weeks after that GTA4. They won't be on your computer for a while.
- Stevethegreat, on 02/19/2008, -2/+6Witcher, Crysis and Spore wont be on your XBOX either.
- samdu, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3Actually... Crysis and Spore very well may be. I know that Crytek is looking at putting Crysis on the PS3, which means they're probably looking at the 360 as well. And Spore may very well hit the HD consoles as well.
- Stevethegreat, on 02/19/2008, -2/+6Witcher, Crysis and Spore wont be on your XBOX either.
- petebot, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3You didn't research this before you picked up your 360?? That doesn't make any sense...
- YouRookies, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1I got it as a gift.
- BearinG, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2You also don't need to ONLY get games that came out recently.. you can get some of the older (and cheaper by now) game like Dead Rising, Fight Night, PGR .. There's some good older games too that might not be on PC..
- countingthedays, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5In a few weeks, you'll have a new Rainbow Six, and a few weeks after that GTA4. They won't be on your computer for a while.

- LogicBomB, on 02/19/2008, -6/+9Microsoft must have lost so much $$$ on this (and other) errors that you can better believe they might pay a little more attention next time. I'm on my 6th. No ***** joke. And I'm extremely careful with my gear...
- DupontNumber24, on 02/20/2008, -1/+0I am on my 8th and that is a "joke", but I still love the little magma filled kinda white white.
- ScionX, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1huh?
- DupontNumber24, on 02/20/2008, -1/+0I am on my 8th and that is a "joke", but I still love the little magma filled kinda white white.
- Rabbethan, on 02/19/2008, -11/+5Well, my 360 actually shows the red rings when the power in my house goes out and comes back quickly, so that might have been what happened here.
Remember, those lights mean "General hardware failure", so sometimes it shows up for things other than the death of the system.- TiMMY8765, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7your power outage is 4 lights. the real RROD is 3 lights
- RoanokeRich, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4Uh no, we have been having storms here all week and every time the power flickers I get 3 rings.
- theaceoffire, on 02/19/2008, -3/+2Then get ready to call MS.
- Rabbethan, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3Nope, I get 3 lights. And this has been happening since I got the system in Jan of 2006. No problems with it either.
- RoanokeRich, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4Uh no, we have been having storms here all week and every time the power flickers I get 3 rings.

- petro62, on 02/19/2008, -9/+7From what I have seen there are more than one reason for the Red Ring. It doesn't always mean the machine is totally dead. I came in the other day and mine was flashing a Red Ring, but I hit the power button and it started right up. Come to find out my power had blipped and caused the problem. I am sure all consoles have their own issues(be it software, hardware) and will continue to have issues. I think the more power they put in these small cases the more problems they will have. Between heating issues and just stress on parts this could become a common theme for consoles. I hope not because I just got hooked on console gaming as compared to PC gaming.
- dmadzak, on 02/20/2008, -2/+8Please don't be an enabler. I don't have an XBox 360 or PS3, but I find the failure rate unacceptable and this goes way beyond "all consoles have their own issues". The product is defective. Plain and simple.
- SriLankan1, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0From past experience, you saw the red rings once, usually means they will be back for good in the near future. My second xbox booted with rrrod and i shut er down and booted back and it was ok, for a hile but i knew it was inevitable. Sure enough it has failed again.
- Chucara, on 02/19/2008, -5/+3Heh, pretty stupid of the reps at the booth not to notice, but even if this was a new model, it could be caused by insufficient cooling (it being locked in that plastic box). I haven't had any problems with my Xbox (HDMI version) so far.
- AvidPreatorian, on 02/19/2008, -9/+7m$ making low quality products is nothing new to me, said goodbye to them a long time ago
- chkdg8, on 02/19/2008, -3/+19Fix this ***** already. There's no excuse anymore for a company like Microsoft to continue on with this mess. With the exit of HD-DVD and the PS3 in good light, the 360 camp cannot afford any major hiccups this year.
- iceblademan, on 02/20/2008, -1/+2You can't tell the truth on the comments page about the RRoD! You have to say the cursory "well, every console has its faults even the PS3 blah blah blah."
- XxbladesfirexX, on 02/19/2008, -5/+8IMHO there is just no reason for a console to have any "general hardware failure's" It goes through testing, more testing, years of development, and still comes out faulty. Maybe of ***** tried to make something other than a PC with poor drivers, they wouldn't have this problem...
- mahela, on 02/19/2008, -8/+6

And I'm extremely careful with my gear... - elliotys, on 02/19/2008, -3/+7Gotta say the hardware problems are *****, and shouldn't have happened, but I think microsoft did a great job with their extended warranty. For me it was real easy, my xbox disc drive ***** up, called up xbox live, sent in box, got new one in a month. It's definitely not ideal for them to break in the first place, but SO FAR my replacement hasn't skipped a beat.
Im almost more worried if it would had been a more rare occurence, it would have gotten less publicity, and thus no compensation from microsoft. - sevenalive, on 02/19/2008, -5/+4I just got my xbox back. my replacement Mfg date is Jan 15 2008. No HDMI though, i wonder if they switch the serial number and Mfg. date to the repair date instead. I thought all consoles now have hdmi, so was mine actually made this year?
- offspring06, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2It looks like they slapped a new sticker on it. If it was manufactured in 2008 it would have HDMI.
- dannyboyinxs, on 10/07/2008, -0/+0well f*ck me sideways... mine was manufactured on the same day! (jan/15/08)... lets hope the testers felt like playing the full gow campaign and put it in a furnace before sending it to us (make double sure its a good batch)
- JamesMatt, on 02/19/2008, -6/+4HAL: Let me put it this way, Mr. Amor. The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. We are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error.
- DarkDx, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!

- HolyChimp, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3Nobody cares
- jo21, on 02/20/2008, -2/+0except nokia n95.. it does vga at 30fps
- JoeRW, on 02/19/2008, -9/+4That's three red lights, it just needs to be turned off and then back on. Happened to me once.
Well for all the bad press about the xbox360, Ive still got one of the first released in Australia (won from Microsoft at a pre release promotion), played all the demanding games in 1080i and never had a single problem with it.- jonesy827, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5Oh I see, it's happened to you once so obviously the problem is exactly the same as yours. Seems Logical.....
- Archer007, on 02/20/2008, -1/+2The spelling and grammar ninjas will come for you tonight.
- elnoseface, on 02/19/2008, -5/+9I would probably overheat too if i was in a small plastic box.

- iancorey, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4It would have been fixed but the MS reps are still on hold with support!
Up high, Internet. - gbro, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4It's just an experiment by microsoft to see if consumers will beta test hardware as well as software. With the 360 continuing to sell they have their answer.
- itseffinkasey, on 02/19/2008, -5/+3Maybe the video output wasn't correctly connected and is a bit loose? I know this happened to me before.
- Dracusis, on 02/19/2008, -6/+10Microsoft = EPIC FAIL. Seems the 360 is no different from Vista.
- kfsutops, on 02/19/2008, -4/+10I have had three of them die. One was received by Microsoft to be fixed now. I will never buy another xbox.
- DiggLotus, on 02/20/2008, -10/+5It's only a loose video cable... that ring means nothing...
- iceblademan, on 02/20/2008, -2/+8That's what they told Frodo. Then his ***** got ***** up, man
- ElAssoWipo, on 02/20/2008, -1/+2Loose video cable is four lights.
- LupeFiasco, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1I haven't bough a next gen system as of yet and was really leaning towards a 360. Until they definitively fix the failure rates I' gonna have to go with the ps3 in the near future. Probably will end up getting both, but not 360 for a long while. I actually care if my 360 is out of commission for a month and I care that I may have to send it back in 1-6 times.
