    Are software developers paid substantially less in Germany than in the US? Even a beginning coder here is making $80-110,000/annually.

      There is nothing to suggest he chose this lifestyle because it was the only option he could afford. (That said, I would be surprised if a 17-year old working for a startup were making 100k/year.)
